King David I

Scottish builders are busy on a triad of light warships and also a much grander project of Glasgow city built in Lothian. King David rules from Edinburgh, then moves among his people in an attempt to found a church. During the ceremony he is abducted. A running battle between the King's men and the thugs responsible breaks out across the city. 400 men are killed before the King is found and rescued. He learns that the stress was too much for the queen, who died during the travails. Malcolm secures a Feudal Alliance in Lothian, the region thankful for the new city. Admiral Connely keeps an eye on the Minch with his 40 ships. Morgan, not to be outdone by Malcolm, gains a Feudal Alliance from the islanders in Man.

 

Kingdom of England

King Henry I

The King orders 15 more ships to be constructed for the navy and the clearing of trees begun in Wessex. King Henry himself is wounded during the construction of a Church in Mercia. He abandons the project and instead arranges a Non-Paying Tributary alliance with Lancashire. William Adeline upgrades the Church to an Abbey in Sussex, but is unable to found a Church in London. He then sees to the Government. William Constable takes 20 warships into the Rhine, launching unsuccessful raids against Alsace and Lorraine. Three ships are lost. The Feudal Allies react from the home provinces but are not put to the test.

 

County of Flanders

Count Robert II

The army sees the expansion of 2000 Cavalry and 300 Engineers. Count Robert sends an appeasement to the Holy Roman Emperor in the form of monies and the release of Count Wichmann. It does much to sooth tensions. Spies and scouts scour the border with Lorraine, expecting another raid. They are right, and army movements are reported coming toward Brabant. County forces converge on the border, laying in wait for the interlopers. 4100 Cavalry and 1000 Infantry descend upon the pillaging troops of Lorraine. Duke Thierry, leading the hostile force, is killed instantly. Gaston, the new Heir, quickly rallies his men and organizes a defense. He is successful in turning the tide and forcing the Count's forces to fall back into the regional fortress. Lorraine loses 900 Cavalry, while Flanders sees 1000 Cavalry and 900 Infantry lost.

 

Duchy of Lorraine

Duke Gaston I

The Duke, tired of the bumbling incompetence of his son in things martial, revokes his status as heir-apparent, instead putting his second son, Gaston, in the position. The court of Lorraine accepts the choice, and Thierry the Younger is sent to the Vatican to live a pious (and out of the way) life. The Duke then tries to make a case for full-scale war against the Burgundians, but reports trickle in from Cologne that a massive earthquake has destroyed the city. Many blame the Duke for the event, worried that he is spilling the blood of Christians over the heathens holding the city of the Lord. The Duke ignores them and marches his troops (including the newly conscripted 2000 Cavalry) to battle. [See: Battle for Nivernais] After the Battle in Nivernais, the armies return North. They raid into Brabant, but the results are not good. Lord Raymond arranges a defensive pact with Swabia through the marriage of Princess Angele. Gaston, expecting more years of conflict, hires 1300 mercenary infantry in Heppenheim.

Duchy of Normandy

Duke Robert II

The Duke orders a new fortress built to better protect the city of Rouen, as well as a quick 100 infantry. He sees to the government and recalls his son to the capital to defend the city. Prince Henri and Francois finish negotiations in Maine, absorbing the region completely into the Duchy. Charles, in Maine as well, reacts with his 1900 troops.

 

Kingdom of France

King Philip I

A fresh 800 cavalry fill the French ranks. King Philip, lacking living children, seeks to appoint one of his Lieutenants, Claude-Louis de Montfort, as the next in line for the throne. The efforts are blocked, however, as many in the country's nobility see an opportunity in advancing themselves. As Philip rules in the capital, he arranges two marriages. One to a daughter of Burgundy with himself, a second to England through Claude-Louis. Without the court accepting Claude-Louis as Heir, however, England balks at the ceremony. The Burgundian girl is never delivered to Paris at all. Philip, desperate for an Heir, marries the girl from England himself, negotiating a strong trade alliance with England in the process. The union has yet to be blessed with offspring. Roche Yves, after transporting the English girl to Paris, seeks an Alliance with Limousin. He is outdone by the diplomats from Aquitaine. When Burgundy is attacked, French forces move to support their ally. [See: Battle for Nivernais]

 

Duchy of Burgundy

Duke Henri I

The Duke reinforces Nivernais, expecting an attack from Lorraine, then personally sees to the government from Worms.

 

Battle for Nivernais

Duke Thierry of Lorraine gathers his forces: 5600 Cavalry and 500 Engineers. With Guy of Hesse and his son Gaston in tow, he descends on Nivernais, ready to reclaim the region. The Burgundian Heir, Guy, is already moving to intercept the invaders, fielding 2400 Cavalry and 500 Engineers. Lieutenant Yves bases amongst the two field forts in the region. Claude-Louis, in France, also moves to the region in support, bringing 2800 Cavalry and 500 Engineers.

Once again, Lorraine fields the better commanders. Their cavalry is also the best in the world, and the defending forces are not on familiar territory. Lorraine's scouts soon force a battle. The defenders cannot hold against the invaders. Yves of Burgundy is captured during a minor skirmish. Three days later Claude-Louis of France is wounded in heavy fighting. Morale weakening, Guy orders a structured retreat into Burgundy. They leave 1000 Cavalry and 100 Engineers on the field. Lorraine finds 500 men dead.

 

Duchy of Aquitaine

Duke William IX, The Troubadour

A stunning girl named Aliénor comes forward, proclaiming to be the daughter of Duke William from a mistress fifteen years ago. She sweeps onto the scene like a whirlwind. Her beauty is matched by her courtly manners and her mental acuity. The Duke embraces the girl openly, appointing her a position at court and keeping her at his side. Influence increases with the Vatican. The army is not neglected with 200 Infantry, 500 Cavalry and 5 warships constructed. Mercenaries are hired as well: 500 Infantry and Cavalry hired in Toulouse, three Mercenary warships hired in Poitiers. Both Williams react inside the Kingdom in case of trouble and sit idle while the fighting brews in the East. Hugh gains an Economic Alliance in Limousin despite a competing French diplomat.

King Alfonso VI

King Alfonso travels down to the Pozo de la Sangre, wishing to look upon the site with his own eyes. As he touches the pool, he is overcome with a vision. He sees the warriors of Leon fighting some hidden enemy. The Leonese archers in the battle are using a bow of extra length. The archers are firing rapidly, the range reaching far further than the King had seen before. As his vision subsided, he saw the archers fall back into a forest of yew trees. The King returns to Leon, talking to his military smiths and bowyers. By the end of the cycle, Leonese "Longbows" begin to see use in the Infantry. In Portugal, part of the Postal Road system is upgraded. In Galacia, La Coruna city is built. Sancho gifts the King with three new grandchildren. Feram, recent convert to the teachings of Casilda, returns to Leon and preachers her tenants. Sandalio defends his region of Galacia without issue. The teachings of Casilda spread into Portugal and Leon as waves of conversions continue. the region of Leon is now almost entirely accepting of her teachings.

 

Almoravid Sultanate

Sultan Yusef ibn Tashfin

The Sultan increases the assassins under his command, then puts in for the construction of Dab-al-Roca, a new city in Estramadura. Abu Omar scours the nation for traces of Reconquista sites. One is discovered in Andalusia, and Abu Bakr moves in with 1500 Cavalry to purge the location. Assassins strike at some of the dignitaries at court, but they fail to disrupt the Sultan's government. The raids in Africa are unexpected.

Kingdom of Norway

King Magnus I Barefoot

Advances in ship technology increase the effectiveness of the Kingdom's navy. Three cogs are quickly added to it. King Magnus rules from Christiania, before rounding out the cycle reacting with his 3000 troops in case of trouble. He is saddened by his Queen's death. Sigurd gains an Economic Alliance from the Shetland islands. Tor Evanson preaches on the islands, but gains little before dying of an infection. Lars continues to react from Farsund with his navy of 11 Light Warships. His ship is sunk by storms in 1113.

 

Kingdom of Sweden

More troops are added to the army, with 1000 Infantry, 500 Cavalry built in Stockholm. King Inge rules from the capital without issue. Ragnvald takes over the census project from the King, allowing the monarch to mourn for the death of his wife. Sylvester defends Uppsala with 1000 infantry.

King Canute V Lavard

More assassins are added to the payrolls while Halland reports cultivation has completed. Denmark sees the strength of a new fortress. King Erik rules from Skjern, suffering from old age and passing in 1109. Canute's wife, from Sweden, dies during childbirth. This puts trade relations between the nations under pressure. Edwin and William secure a complete alliance from Halland.

 

Duchy of Saxony

Emperor Magnus I

1000 additional cavalry are constructed. Trade sees some meddling, as Kiev and Lorraine become new partners, while France is embargoed. Monies are sent to both Lorraine and the Popular Crusade.
The Emperor takes a bride and Economic Alliance from negotiations in Holstein. Otto takes a new bride from Freisland, then defends the homeland. Baron Liudolfing moves to Hesse with 1500 Cavalry, setting up a defense of the region. He wishes he could have caught those English sailors. Gerhard Lieuwes of Freisland defends his region without conflict.

Duke Henry V

The bishops of the nation extend their influence in court, urging for Ducal resources to be spent cultivating Westphalia. Henry acquiesces, then rules from Wurzburg, while he watches his Duchess sicken and die. Heinrich Administers in Nordgau, but proves ineffective. Otto and Ernst arrange a marriage for Henry, the Heir, and secure a complete alliance with Westphalia.

 

Duchy of Bohemia

Duke Vratislaus III

Bretislaus continues to improve relations with the Vatican. He orders the conscription of 200 infantry and lays the plans for Vratislavia City on the Odor River in honor of his son. Bretislaus personally oversees the Frankish embargo (Cutting trade with France, Flanders and Normandy), shifting the merchants to other routes before closing them down. He then rules from the capital. Bretislaus tells Vratislaus, "My son, many years have I sat upon this throne. My only grandson lies cold within the ground. I should like to hold your heir before I pass on into God's hands." The Duke grows ill during the cold January of 1111. He summons his Duaghter-in-Law to his deathbed, resting his hands on her swollen belly before passing on. Three months later, she bears a healthy son. And two years later, a daughter. Ivan and Teodor found the Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius in Bohemia before Defending and Reacting from the homeland.

The Postal Road is completed to the Tyrol border in Switzerland. The road to Savoy is disbanded. Gold support is sent to the Popular Crusade as ordered by Imperial Edict. The Duke quickly tries to conduct a census, but he'll need to spend a lot more time to succeed in the monumental task. He then rules from the capital. Frederick the Younger defends Swabia. His young wife dies during her first pregnancy. He spends the rest of the cycle Administering. Prince Handel travels to Lorraine, marrying and arranging a Defensive Pact. Manfred escorts Princess Claudia to Burgundy to arrange a Good Relations marriage. However, Claudia is a minor noble of no particular importance to the Duchy, though Manfred tries to pass her off as the daughter of Duke Frederick. He is unsuccessful and thrown in prison after a troubadour rats him out. Simon Ruppel marries the Dukes actual daughter, gaining the position of Prince. He and Handel then put forth a case for War against Burgundy. Most nobles see Burgundy as Lorraine's problem, and the Princes are unable to gain the support needed. Five Mercenary Warships are hired in Augsburg for the coming cycle.

 

Margravate of Tuscany

Margrave Matilda I

2000 Infantry are constructed for Matilda. Two light warships are built in Pisa. Finally, five field forts litter the grounds of Savoy. Matilda completes a Census, then reacts from Tuscany with 4700 troops. Godfrey Rules from Pisa, expecting a bride from Burgundy, but she never arrives. He then negotiates the ransom of Ludovico from Burgundy. Cesare Borsa founds a Church in Tuscany, then begins to negotiate the release of Flavius from Burgundy as well. But Flavius dies of an illness before the negotiations are completed. A Military Alliance is made with Sicily. Ties with the Vatican are increased.

 

Serene Republic of Venice

Doge Vital Michele

Ten warships are added to the fleet. Doge Vital founds the Church of San Marco in Venice, then oversees a national census. Prince Vitallo takes a bride from Carinthia and gains an Economic Alliance from the region. Bagliette Reacts out of Verona with 3200 troops. He sees no troubles. Sporza patrols the Tyrhennian Sea, reacting to any aggression against holdings or shipping of Venice, Apulia and Tuscany with his fleet of 50 ships. Again, no trouble.

Saboteurs set fire to many of the Duchy's wheat fields, destroying 10% of the harvest this cycle. 300 Cavalry are personally conscripted for Duke Roger. He manages to sire a son in 1113 with the aging Adela of Flanders. Her second pregnancy takes her life. Leon dies from malnutrition, lingering in a Brugundian prison just months before his release.

Another 10 Light Warships are built for George of Antioch. Simon marries Matilda the younger from Tuscany, forging a Military Alliance with the Margravate. The Union is blessed with three sons and a daughter. Count Roger rules from the Capital. George of Antioch and Jordan react from Palermo with the 40 ship navy. A few minor secrets of the Sicilian ship making process are stolen from the yards. This sets back the QR investment.

Polish traders enter the Principality through the new land border. Funds are sent to Novgorod for some of her Rutters. Vitebsk city sees an expansion. Sviatapolk rules from Kiev City. His Grand Princess passes in her sleep early in the cycle. Yaropolk hangs around in Novgorod, waiting for the planned wedding, yet once again no Novgorod participation occurs. Yaropolk eventually leaves his sister in Novgorod to return to his duties. Shirik preaches the word in Lithuania, even marring off Princess Katyuska to the regional leader. Much progress is made in converting the heathens. Pavlo fails to secure an alliance in Pechneg as does Vasili in Tver.

 

Kingdom of Hungary

Seven Cogs constructed and serviced to internal trade in Budapest. Konyves rules from the capital, then tries to conduct a census in a quick period, but is unsuccessful. His queen dies late in the cycle.
Istvan Administers without issue. Almos and Lazlo bring Bakony fully into the Kingdom. Nicoli of Wallachia reacts from his Feudal Region.

The infrastructure of the Kingdom sees an increase. A postal road is built in Croatia, a second almost finished in Ilyria. Petar rules from the Capital while Dmiter Administers. His wife dies late in the cycle during a difficult pregnancy, and later, worse news as his youngest son perishes as well. Ivan Mraz tries to increase the alliance in Ludgorie, but makes no progress. Vesik administers ineptly, doing more harm than good. Feudal Dalmatia reacts from the region.

The Byzantine Engineers continue to make advances in technique and effectiveness. The Piety of the Empire begins to see a small increase as well. Another fortresses is constructed: "Polirinia" built in Bythinia. Thessaloniki, a new port city, is meanwhile built in Macedon. Trade begun with Aragon, Burgundy and the Almoravids through Corinth. Emperor Alexus completes a census in the capital. Heir John Rules from the capital, siring two more children. Germanicus and Basil React from Bithynia with 6000 troops. Choniates patrols the Aegean Sea with 20 Light Warhips before docking in Neocastra. Thelonius of Morea defends his Feudal Region.

1200 Cavalry are conscripted for the Khan. A fortress is built in Psidia "Sultanhan" Kilij rules from the capital, then defends the city with the 5000 troops under his command. Rukn, the Heir, sires another two children between rounds of defense of the homeland. Qubadh and Timur secure a Feudal Alliance with the Khazar and a Non-Paying Tributary with the Vasi. As they are traveling back from Vasi they are set upon by bandits and killed. The three Feudal Allies defend and react from within their respective realms. No action is seen. The Beg of Pamphyla succumbs to a fever.

The Sultan begins to institute reforms in the national religion to modernize the faith. So far the people resist the proposed changes. Cilicia cultivation is finally finished. 1000 Cavalry and 500 Engineers are conscripted in Antioch. Kerbogha and Aazaad React with 2000 Cavalry from Aleppo. Zengi, The Heir, rules from the Capital, siring a son and daughter. Deenar Reacts from Cilicia with 1000 Cavalry. The Feudal Allies from Palmyra and Circus react from their regions.

 

Sultanate of Damascus

The Sultan begins initiatives to change the society and economy of the nation. Trade is initiated with Venice. The Sultan rules from the capital, siring a newborn son and Heir. His two brothers take positions in court. Samad al Dossadi reacts out of As-Sur with 20 Warships. Muneer Salim un Din continues to Administer from Petra. Samir Amouzegar continues to seek a diplomatic alliance in Selucia, but nothing more than a Feudal Alliance is possible in the steppe region. The Feudal Allies of Bostra and Selucia defend their regions.

 

Fatimid Caliphate

Caliph Ahmad al-Musta'li

1000 Engineers are raised for Al-Amir. The Caliph takes on two young brides as he rules from the capital. Despite his age, two, healthy twin sons are born. Al-Amir defends Al-Iskandria with his new Engineers. Abdul ibn Mbrale is able to gain a Non-Paying Tributary alliance from Siwa. Mohamed I'Sagen defends Al-Qahirah with his 2000 men. Yusuf ibn Tarik secures a Non-Paying Tributary Alliance from Zighan. He tries to preach in Tripolotania, but takes ill and passes. The Feudal Allies of Sinai and Ad'Diffah defend their personal regions. At the end of the cycle, Siwa and Zighan (Each more than six months from the capital) slip away from control.

 

Nubian Kingdom of Makuria

King Basileios I

Basileios initiates talks with Eastern Orthodoxy regarding a Reconciliation, but progress is slow. 400 Engineers are built in Funj. A Postal Road in Funj is constructed with an adjoining road in Axum begun. Georgios, the Heir, Rules from the capital, siring three children. David, and the Feudal Allies from Kassala and Nubia, moves to take Dunquhla back from the local lord. When Diplomacy is initially refused, David uses his 3000 Cavalry, 700 Infantry and 400 Engineers to assault the city. Once David breaches the walls, the city surrenders. David loses only 100 Engineers in the skirmish. However, Dengal of Nubia suffers a minor wound, and retires back to his homeland to recover. He never does. David and Zacharias then combine to gain a Feudal Alliance from Alwa. Simon conducts a Census from Funj.

 

Emirate of Yemen

Queen Arwa Al-Sulaihi

With control of Mecca, the piety of the Emirate sees an increase. 5 Cogs, 5 Light Warships and 1100 Cavalry are built in Sana. Queen Arwa returns to Sana to Rule the nation. Tariq, the Heir, attempts to woo the scattered tribesmen of Madina. The desert men are still wary after the attacks of the Essenes, and are in no mood to deal with Tariq's less than stellar Diplomacy style. In fact, one emir becomes so frustrated with the Yemeni Prince that Tariq is thrown in chains "until the next new moon.". Accompanying Tariq, however, is a contingent of 2000 Yemeni cavalry, and when they hear of the imprisonment of their leader, move to rescue him. The Yemeni forces attack the local 1600 Madinan tribesmen, which turns into a nine-month long campaign. At the end of it, the Yemeni are unsuccessful in freeing Tariq, and retire into the Holy City of Mecca, having lost 700 of their men and horses. Madina sees a loss of 600 Infantry during the struggle. Suliman Administers from Yemen. His ineptitude ends up harming the infrastructure of the nation more than helping. Iben convinces the Emir of Nadramurt to become fully integrated into the nation before expiring of the Cough.. Muhamed of Berbera defends the Yemeni homeland with his Feudal Troops. Mubarek of Asir defends his own region.

 

Emirate of Tunisia

Emir Yahya ibn Tamin

Both the Emir's personal cadres of spies and assassins see heavy recruitment. Walls are built around Medina Mayurqa city. 5 Light Warships and 400 Cavalry conscripted. The Emir, his Heir, and a Lieutenant combine to work on the Census. The Emir does not live to see its completion, wasting away during the process. His son, Yahya, assumes the throne without issue. Gottschalk begins to explore the Viking Bank, but is swept off course and never heard from again.
