King David I

King David rules from Edinburgh, pooling resources to expand the city of Nairn. Leaders attempt to negotiate with Lothian and Man, but are unable to secure any alliances. Admiral Conelly protects the naval interests of the realm with his 20 light warships, reacting out of the capital. No trouble is on the waters. Bjarne of Orkney defends his own islands with 700 Infantry. He sees a quiet five years.

 

Kingdom of England

King Henry I

King Henry secures a Feudal alliance with the Mercians, but fails to gain headway in Lancashire. William Adelin marries in Northumbria, gaining a Feudal Alliance from the region. He tries to found religious sites in London and Sussex, but is unable to get them off the ground. Robert of Gloucaster conducts raids against both Dyffed and Gwenned with 400 Infantry and Horse. The poor regions offer little loot. He then reacts from Mercia for the remainder of the cycle, but no one moves against England. William Constable accompanies two royal daughters across the channel. Two marriages are arranged, Matilda going off to Flanders while Julianne is sent to Normandy. Trade profits are improved with both nations. Even young Prince Fulk is sent off to the Vatican (which helps to increase influence with Rome.) Constable later negotiates with the region of Devon, but is unable to gain an agreement. A new road paves the way between Norwich and London and the Rutters for the North and Irish Seas are inked.

Robert II tries to sneak into Freisland for some reason, but his movements are spotted. He is able to escape back to Holland before the Saxon Emperor can do anything. He returns to word that his wife has grown sickly. She dies only a month later. Baldwin marries a girl from England, then jams ships onto many of the nation's foreign routes. Mathieus travels to Lorraine with the intention of purchasing agro from the german duchy. However, when he arrives he is seized by Duke Thierry and thrown into prison (and his gold payment stolen). Then the homeland is raided.

Duke Thierry II

The Duke decides to move against his neighbor to the North. First, he lures one of the Flemish leaders into the realm, capturing him and pinching his gold as well. He whips up the religious fervor of the nation, and adds another 2000 Cavalry and 500 Infantry to the army. The Duke and two other leaders then launch a raid into the heartland of Flanders. The local garrison, fortress, and leader on react make the raid only somewhat lucrative. The Duke returns to Champagne to learn that he has been invaded. [See: Germany Pressed]

 

Duchy of Normandy

Duke Robert II

Duke Robert Rules from Rouen, overseeing a marriage between his son Henri and a girl from England. The marriage increases trade between the two nations. He is pleased to learn the quality of the navy improves, as does the effectiveness of his intelligence corps. Finally, he conscripts 500 Cavalry for himself. William Cleto defends the capital city, while Charles reacts from Maine with 1400 Cavalry and 500 Engineers. Neither see action. Francois then gains a Tributary Alliance with Maine.

 

Germany Pressed

Burgundy and France turn their attention away from Aquitaine, and set their eyes upon the tenuous holdings of Lorraine to the East. Burgundy, building new forces and gathering the remnants of the previous army in Anjou, leads 2400 Cavalry and 500 Engineers to link up with the French. The latter bring 3300 Cavalry and 500 Engineers. They press into Nivernais. Bruno the Grimm reacts to meet them from Lorraine with a small army of 1000 Infantry and 500 Engineers. The battle is quick and decisive. the Franks destroy the Lorrainian forces completely, including the enemy commander. Burgundy claims the region as her own and the allies push into Champagne. Here, luck turns against them. The major army of Lorraine is waiting, after returning from their pillaging in Flanders. 4000 Cavalry under the Duke himself launch at the Frankish troops. 2000 of the allies' forces are cut down, while they are only able to inflict 400 casualties amongst Lorraine. The attackers are disordered, and fall back into Champagne. Luckily, the Duke of Lorraine is wounded in the final battle, and does not risk a press back into Nivernais.

King Philip I

With a new 1000 Cavalry conscripted, the French march off to war once again. [See: Germany Pressed] King Phillip remains behind in Paris, ruling from the capital. He is saddened by the death of his Queen during a late pregnancy. Roch Yves attempts to negotiate with Limousin, but is unable to make any headway.

Duke Henri I

Duke Eudes sends his Heir to the north with many of the national troops [See: Germany Pressed.] It would be the last time he would see his son. [See: Attack of Opportunity] He then negotiates with Aquitaine for the release of his two captive lieutenants. In the end, he agrees to a significant tithe for their release. He is also able to increase Burgundy's influence with the Papacy.

Duke William IX, The Troubadour

Duke William is still cautious and expecting a second round from his enemies. He adds 2200 Infantry, 500 Cavalry and 200 Engineers to the army; and hires 500 Mercenary Cavalry and Infantry in Toulouse, and 5 Light Warships in Bordeaux. His forces gather in Toulouse waiting for an attack that does not come his direction. The piety of the nation is not neglected, with the Church of Saint André founded in Bordeaux while the tithe to the Papacy is increased. Influence increases appropriately with the Vatican. Inked Rutters are traded with the Almoravids.

Casilda of Toledo

The young daughter of the Emir of Toledo grows sick and becomes blind. The court doctors are unable to make any progress on curing her. One night, she dreams of a wellspring in southern Salamanca while an Angel whispers that her cure may be found there. She begs her father to allow her to make the trip and he relents. After many months of slow travel, she finds the wellspring she dreamed of. Its caretakers are a small band of Catholic Monks. She tells them of her sickness and dreams and angelic words, and they allow her to bath in the waters. Her pallor improves, her vision is restored. She converts and decides to stay at the small monastery. Word soon spreads of the miracle, and many sick and wounded make their way to the spring. Casilda blesses them and preaches to them a message of tolerance and kinship in the face of the Iberian conflict. Those who take her words into their heart are cured by the wellspring. In 1108, a soldier from the Reconquista arrives at the spring. He demands to be cured of an old war injury, but refuses to listen to the preaching. Growing frustrated, he baths in the spring and is infuriated when nothing happens. He seizes Casilda and demands to be cured. When she tells him she cannot, only the grace of God, he slits her throat. When Casilda's blood reaches the spring, the spring begins to run entirely red. The soldier flees the monastery, but his body is found hung days later in the countryside. As word spreads of Casilda's death, many turn out for her funeral at the monastery. The monks she had befriended continue to preach her message of tolerance, and soon both Salamanca and Old Castille are following her words.

The Iberian Feudal Allies see a release by the Sultan as he concentrates on Valencia along with his Heir. He gains a Full Alliance after taking on a second bride from the region. Abu Bakr reacts out of Valencia with a newly conscripted 1500 Cavalry, and Harith of Idjil leads 800 Troops in Talavera, but no Conquistadors show their face.

King Magnus I Barefoot

King Magnus conducts a census of the lands, this helps his intelligence agents act more effectively. Sigurd continues to work with the Shetland islands, and this time is successful in securing a Non-paying Tributary alliance with them. Tor Evansen continues to preach the word in Fjordane, and makes very slow progress. Lars Larsen adds two more ships to his navy (now commanding eleven light warships) and bases out of Farsund looking for trouble. He finds none.

King Inge rules from Stockholm, spending a little time trying to conduct a census to no avail. He is distracted by the death of his wife, Helena. Ragnvald continues to be unable to sway the chiefs of Kopparberg, but holds out hope for the future. Sylvester defends Uppsala with 1000 Infantry and is unneeded. Felix remains in Christiana for festivities and alliance talks with Norway and Denmark.

Trade is initiated with Kiev, though the latter is unable to supply MSP until they map the route. Handel City, with the ominous fortress "Het Verdragen" is built along the shorelines of Halland. The surrounding region is slated for cultivation. King Erik rules from Skjern. Canute sees to expanding his own family, and with the birth of a son and two daughter is quite happy. However, two of the children, Gillis and Birgitte as well as Queen Grete, catch the cough during the cold winter of 1109 and perish. Edwin and William gain a Full Alliance with Halland.

 

Duchy of Saxony

Emperor Magnus I

Missionaries spread the word in Danzig, and the pagan ruler takes Christ as his personal savior. More troops are added to the Emperor's roster, another 1000 Infantry and Cavalry, as well as three field forts within Freisland. The Emperor sends off his son, Ordulf, and 1000 Infantry to the Popular Crusade. He reacts out of Freisland along with Baron Liudolfing with 2500 Cavalry and Infantry but no armies move against them. Otto Rules from the Capital, his wife dying in 1108 from a complicated pregnancy. Uthar is unable to negotiate an alliance with isolationist Holstein. Gerhard of Freisland rallies his men and defends his region. He takes pleasure in the misfortune of Flanders at the hands of Lorraine. The Empress succumbs to old age in 1109.

Duke Henry V

Prince Heinz comes of age and is granted 1000 Infantry and a stipend of gold before being sent off to the Popular Crusade, while 600 Cavalry are conscripted for the Duke as he rules from Wurzburg.
Henry the Heir marries a girl from Nordgau, who sadly dies during her first pregnancy. Prince Heinrich busies himself with conducting a Census. Ernst and Otto enter talks with Westphalia and gain an Economic Alliance.

 

Duchy of Bohemia

Duke Bretislaus II

The Duke continues to increase his personal ties with the Vatican. He tries to found a church in Bohemia, but has little luck, so returns to overseeing the government in Prague. Vreitslaus is given command of a new 600 Infantry and 100 Engineers. While he administers from Prague, his young son Jerolim grows ill. The court physicians are unable to cure him, and he passes in 1106. Vretislaus distracts himself with the conducting of a census at the end of the cycle. Ivan and Teodor negotiate Silisia fully into the Duchy. Duchess Nikola joins her grandson in the afterlife in 1108.

Swabia sees an increase in intelligence effectiveness, closer ties to the Vatican, and even sends off Prince Karsten to join the Popular Crusade with 1000 Light Cavalry. The National armies are increased with 300 cavalry, 700 Infantry, 200 Engineers and 5 Light Warships. The Duke rules from Augsburg and is pleased when Simon Ruppel gains an Economic Alliance from Lombardy. Admiral Gunthar, in a foreshadowing of hostilities, descends into the Rhine with his 5 Light Warships and pirates the Burgundian trade out of Worms before blockading the city. Margravate of Tuscany

Margrave Matilda I

Matilda also honors the recent Imperial Edict, sending Prince Pietro with 1000 Infantry to the Popular Crusade. She is pleased to learn the Navy Quality and Assassin Effectiveness improves. She conscripts a new 200 Cavalry and marches off to war. [See: Attack of Opportunity] Godfrey, the Heir, marries into the Duchy of Swabia, the stunning daughter Roz. This cements a Military Alliance between the nations. Unfortunately, Roz dies during her first pregnancy. Godfrey finishes the cycle attending to the government, including the marriage of his sister, Juliette, to an Apulian Prince (And gaining a second Military Alliance.) Finally, Count Flavius of Savoy is married into the family as well, and his region is fully integrated. Ties with the Papacy are increased.

Doge Vital Michele

1700 Infantry are added to the ranks of the army and sent West. [See: Attack of Opportunity.] Doge Vitale Rules from Venice and intervenes with his Merchants, dumping MSP on to many national routes. He is saddened by the death of his wife. Prince Vitallo is unable to negotiate an alliance with Carinthia.

Four Field Forts are constructed in Calabria. 600 Cavalry and 1800 Engineers conscripted for Duke Roger, and battle is joined. [See: Attack of Opportunity.]

 

Attack of Opportunity`

With two military alliances in tow, four allies set off into Provence. Margrave Matilda is the ceremonial leader, her personal cadre of generals and advisors are the best in Europe. She brings two other lieutenants and a new prince along with her. All told, the Tuscans bring 3500 Cavalry, 2300 Infantry and 500 Engineers. The Apulian Heir and two Lieutenants field 2600 Cavalry and 2300 Engineers. Venice sends one field leader along with 1000 Cavalry, 3200 Infantry, 500 Engineers. Finally, the Swabians send their Heir and Lieutenant with 1300 Cavalry, 1800 Infantry and 500 Engineers.

Duke Eudes of Burgundy and two leaders just ransomed from Aquitaine react to meet the invaders. Two cadres of assassins attempt to kill him and make a quick end to the combat, but both are foiled by the Duke's personal guards. He brings 1000 Cavalry, 1000 Infantry, 500 Engineers and the local 3 field forts to bear.

The first round of fighting is intense, but the allies simply cannot overcome the penalties for not declaring war with Burgundy. They lose 1100 Cavalry, 3000 Infantry and 200 Engineers. The Heir from Apulia and a Lieutenant from Swabia are killed in the battle. Leon of Apulia is captured. One of the Lieutenants from Burgundy is wounded, along with 500 Infantry and 100 Engineers being killed. Everyone regroups before the attack continues. The next battle sees the allies repelled once again with Roland the Stout of Tuscany killed. The allies lose 2000 Cavalry, 1300 Infantry and 300 Engineers. Burgundy loses a mere 400 Infantry. Finally, the Allies push in for one more attempt. This time, two Tuscan leaders are captured and the last Apulian Lieutenant is killed. The allies lose 1000 Cavalry and 600 Infantry. Burgundy loses only 100 Infantry, 100 Cavalry and 200 Engineers, but among them is Duke Eudes I. The Cycle comes to a close, and both sides regroup for the winter.

Count Roger grins to hear of Apulia's misfortune, but does not yet move to take advantage of it. He moves the trade fleet to Cagliari, and orders the construction of 10 more Light Warships for the navy. He also finds time to run a census of the islands. Count Roger sires a daughter, but his wife, Adalaide, dies shortly after the birth. The Heir, Simon, and George of Antioch scour the Mediterranean with 30 Light Warships, but run across no aggressive fleets. They return to port in Palermo.

King Boleslaus III

The Bridge Anchor in Poland is completed, while Little Poland's cultivation is begun. King Wladislaus rules from Warsaw, but catches ill at the end of the cycle and perishes. Boleslaus, the Heir, founds two churches in Masuria where he learns of his father's death. Radoslaw and Tomasz upgrade the alliance with Little Poland to Tributary status.

Two Cogs are built in St. Petersburg. 100 Cavalry, 2200 Infantry are trained for Prince Alexandir. Dmitri's wife dies during a late pregnancy while he Rules from Novgorod. Alexandir and Vladimir return to Vologda for a second match at the head of 2900 Infantry and 100 Cavalry. This time they crush the defending 900 Infantry. Oleg continues to Administer in Novgorod.

Prince Sviatopolk I Vladimirovitch

Gold is sent to Novgorod for a rutter trade. Prince Sviatopolk personally negotiates a Tributary alliance with Seversk. Yaropolk tries to quickly conduct a census, but fails. He then officially marries his mistress, Anistasiya, before escorting his sister Galine to Novgorod in hopes of arranging a royal marriage. No one from Novgorod seems to know about it, however, and the two royal siblings spend the year partaking of the city's delights on their father's gold. Shurik negotiates a Feudal Alliance from Lithuania, mainly through marrying off young Katyushka. Vasily makes Suzdal into a Tributary, but Pavlo has no luck in Pechneg.

Trade with Venice is converted to an overland route. The Quality of the national Cavalry improves. King Konyves fails at conducting a census, he then reacts from Budapest with 300 Cavalry, 1000 Infantry and 500 Engineers but is not tested. Istvan marries a girl from Wallachia and gains a Feudal Alliance from the region. Lazlo increases the Feudal alliance in Bakony to a Full one.

Kladovo is Expanded. 300 Engineers built for King Patar, who Rules from Osijek. Dmitar Administers from Dalmatia, where he takes a wife and sires two sons. The Feudal Ally from Dalmatia reacts from his province. No action is seen. Ludgorie is gained from the Byzantines.

Emperor Alexius I Comnenus

Serbia and the cities of Ochirida and Nish are released from control while Ludgorie is gifted to Croatia. The city of Corinth is constructed in Morea. Two Field Forts built in Lydia, Bithynia and Thrace each. Six Light Warships are built for Admiral Theodore's fleet. Fort Salamis is built to protect the island of Cyprus. The Emperor successfully negotiates the complete absorption of Isuaria into the Realm. John Rules from Constantinople, siring another daughter. Germanicus reacts from Thrace with 1000 Infantry and Cavalry. Chionates Reacts from Bithynia at the head of the regional field forts. No Action is seen.
Admiral Theodore reacts out of Neocastra with 20 Light Warships before dying of old age. Thelonius of Morea defends his home region. No one sees combat. The Empress passes in her sleep in late 1107.

1500 Cavalry, 200 Infantry are built for the Sultan. He rules his domain from Pontus, siring another daughter. He sees the birth of a Granddaughter as well, from the Heir, Rukn. Both men see to the defense of Pontus with the army of 2700 Cavalry, 2600 Infantry, and 500 Engineers. Qudabh and Timur continue to woo the steppe lords to the north, but the Khans hold out for more lucrative arrangements. The three feudal allies continue to warily defend their realms. Soner, daughter of the Sultan, dies at the young age of five.

1400 Cavalry are added to the ranks in Mosul. The Postal Road between Carhae and Aleppo is upgraded to a Royal Road. Cultivation is begun in Cilicia. Kherboga and Aazaad react out of Aleppo at the head of 1500 Cavalry. Deenar upgrades and re-equips 1000 Cavalry, then Reacts from Cilicia. No one sees an enemy. The Heir, Zengi, Rules from Mosul City, marries and has a son and daughter.

 

Sultanate of Damascus

A new port fortress is constructed to protect the city of As-Sur. 200 Cavalry and Infantry are added to the army. Sultan Shams and Lt. Sammir gain a Feudal Alliance with Selucia, only to have the Sultan grow sick and die at the end of 1109. Tutush reacts out of Petra with 1000 Infantry and 500 Engineers where he learns of his father's death. Admiral Samad takes on 200 marines, then reacts out of As-Sur with 20 Light Warships. Muneer Administers from Petra.

 

Fatimid Caliphate

Caliph Ahmad al-Musta'li

Missionaries make some progress in converting Lybia. 600 Cavalry conscripted for the Caliph. 10 Cogs constructed and pressed into Mercantile service on the nation's trade routes. The Caliph marries a young new bride from Mansura, but surprisingly, it is his first wife, Afrah, who becomes pregnant in her late age. The pregnancy is fraught with difficulties, and Afrah does not survive the labor. The child itself is sickly and deformed. Unable to look upon it, the Caliph orders the child cast into the Nile. The Heir helps negotiate a Non-paying Tributary alliance with Tripolotania before overseeing a secret police in Al-Qahirah on the lookout for any rebellions. Lt's. Yusef and Abdul attempt to gain pacts with the various nomads of the Sarahan Oasis lands, but of the five approached, only Bir Tarfawi agrees. General Mahmed continues to defend the capital with 1000 Infantry and Cavalry under his command. T he desert lords of Ad'Diffah and Sinia also defend their holdings.

 

The Essene Brotherhood

The Essene's regroup, coming in for a second time at Madina, this time with the intention to enslave the region. Their forces prove to be inexperienced, and the leadership incompetent. The Essene's are destroyed on the field. A few hundred cavalry retreat the field into the desert.

 

Nubian Kingdom of Makuria

Trade is started with Byzantium. Georgios returns to the capital, siring two healthy sons. David fails to conduct a census. Simon, with the Feudal Allies of Kassala and Nubia, round up the people of Suakin as slaves. With no effective Ruler this cycle, the mayor of Dunquhla takes the opportunity to declare himself royalty and claim the city as his own. This closes the realm's riverine trade. Queen Farasa dies at the end of the cycle.

Queen Arwa arrives in Mecca after the Essene's are crushed. She manages to secure a Tributary Alliance with the city, who is in need of a national protector. Tariq, the Heir, secures a Feudal Alliance with Asir. Iben fails to conduct a census. Muhamed converts seven cogs to MSP, then reacts out of Sana.

Yahya and Miraj run a census, but fail in the massive task. Admiral Zahid reacts from Tunis at the head of 20 Light Warships. Jabril of Gefara reacts from his Feudal region. Neither see combat.
