Lords of the Earth

CAMPAIGN TWENTY-FOUR

Turn 59

1291 ~ 1295 Anno Domini
653 ~ 657 in the year of the Hegira

New for T59

Paths to victory: There are several options open to a player when an NPN has been defeated

  1. Take the victory conditions (see NPN rules) available for NPNs and allow the NPN to go its own way. This is a useful option if you do not want to increase your imperial size or bother with the NPNs internal affairs.
  2. Keep it as either Pacified or Pacified Tributary. You will not get victory conditions but will get income from the NPNs Homeland/Friendly regions and cities. Also, as the years from conquest marker goes up it may turn Friendly or Tributary. Using this option treats the NPN as a super-region.
  3. Old school, you will have to take the regions you want and conquer each in turn. If the capital is taken then some of the NPNs ratings will be added to yours if higher. The NPN will cease to exist.

Dealing with hordes: Hordes can be dealt with a number of ways rather than just an outright battle. These are

  1. Threaten them. Hordes respond to a show of strength and may leave you alone if confronted with enough force.
  2. Bribe them. They are looking for gold and lands to settle or pillage so if you offer them it on a plate they may well go away. They may also just take it and attack anyway.
  3. Use diplomacy. It does work and I suggest chucking in a royal princess or two.

You can also use a combination of the above. If the horde becomes a FA or A, you can direct its attacks or its path of migration.

New for T57

Non-player rules update: I’ve updated the NPN rules to fit better with the Lord’s system. Please check them out.

New for T56

New movement and action rules: I know that they didn’t meet with overall approval last time around but I will be implementing the proposed movement/action rules for T57 (see here). Any current player that takes them up will be given a 2 turn bonus to their credits but they can continue to use the current method for the time being. All new players will have to use them. I’d rather stick to the standard rules but there is no way Lords is sustainable as a long-term game (and I want 24 to be long-term) unless there is some simplification for the GM.

The areas that cause me the most processing grief are movement, AP calculation and garrison changes.

New for T53

Restrictions on Royal Marriages: Due to the complications arising from these rules only K, H or P leaders can benefit from a Royal Marriage. Members of the Royal Family that have not come into play are not considered eligible. Also, Primate, Order and Secret Empire positions are not eligible for marriage bonuses. These are meant to be diplomatic arrangements between sovereign states.

New for T52

East – West Split: I’m going to try to split the East and the West parts of the game so that I can process the orders quicker – don’t know if or how it will work yet but lets see if it’ll happen

New for T51

No Orders: If I don’t get any orders in for a position and the player doesn’t answer my emails then I’ll put the position back to a NPN and put aside the players cash (if any) until they pick it or another nation up again.

New for T50

Request Royal Marriage: Used to ask a NPN nation for a bride for one of your Princes or a suitor for one of your little Princesses. Cost is 6AP, Charisma based. The leader doesn’t have to be in the NPNs capital but if he isn’t then he needs to be in your homeland/capital.

New for T49

Naval Reaction and Blockade: Naval Reactions can only occur when there is action in a Sea Zone that the fleet is based at. The fleet has to be based from a port and not the Sea Zone. Also, the Reaction can only occur when your own lands or those of an ally benefiting from a Defensive Pact marriage bonus are attacked. It also applies to any merchant fleets you operate through the Sea Zone in the case of piracy.  Naval Blockade’s only work if your fleet is based in the same Sea Zone as the target port and you spend all (every single one) of your APs in the blockade. The fleet must be based from a port and not a Sea Zone.

New for T48

The use of fleets for Reaction and mitigating the effects of Pirates: My understanding has now changed since we GMs have had some discussion on the list. The use of Reaction has been explained on the Wiki and Patrol is no longer used in the Base Rules.

Reaction

Trade Route Escorts

  • This is specific to Lords 24. Units can be assigned to a trade route to act as static convoy escort using the G type leader. Note this is not as good as patrol as the warships assigned will only reduce the effects of piracy, not capture or destroy the pirates themselves.

Updated NPN and Primacy rules: Yep, been tinkering again but I feel a almost serene sense of satisfaction with my latest offering. See what you think.

Added the ability to hire mercenary captain when there is no mercenary company available: See the mercenary tables

New for T47

Improved cultivation at TL5: If a nation has reached the dizzy heights of TL5 than it can benefit from improved cultivation. You can Improve a cultivated homeland region from 2GPv to 3GPv, or any other controlled cultivated region from 1GPv to 2GPv. This is a level one megalithic construction.

New for T46

NPNS: I’ve tweaked the NPN and Primacy/Order rules a little to make them fit better with the 24 game. I’ve also reduced their overall RRV to make diplomacy easier.

Second Positions in the East: As I’ve not got a lot of players in the East, I would be willing to allow a second position from existing players. Let me know if you’re interested.

New for T45

New Rivers: I’ve added in some new possible rivers onto the map. These are rivers that were once passable by light traffic (remember Cogs cannot travel on rivers) and have now become silted up. You can dredge a stretch of the river (along one region border edge) as a 0.5 level project.

Gripes:

Agro as conversion – this has restrictions (see 2.11.5.3) which I will be enforcing from now on.

Rivers can only support light ships – as far as I know Cogs cannot travel on rivers. This also includes Cogs built for trade.

New Primates: We have two new Primate positions this turn. Jumal Skyfather, which is an Estonian god and the Coptic Church based out of Axum.

New for T44

Minor islands and City States: I’ll be allowing minor islands (Corfu, Jerba, Wight etc) and city states to be used as locations from T44. Just let me know the rationale behind why you want it separate and if reasonable I’ll add it in. Once they are created as locations, they obey all the rules of islands etc. However, their Gpv cannot go above 0.

Flooding: The last few turns have seen a massive increase in the amount of flooding that has occurred. It appears that the years are getting warmer and wetter. As a result of this some of the minor rivers on the map are once again becoming passable to river traffic.

Denmark: Following on from the Minor Islands stuff, you can see that Denmark is now separated out to Jutland and Syaland (Zeeland).

Announcements and items of note

General Stuff: Please use my Paypal account (stephenbrunt@yahoo.co.uk) for all Lords’ 24 payments. If you cannot use this facility then please let me know and I will see what I can do about filtering US funds to my account. I may also stop using the throneworld email address due to the mass of spam I’m getting!

Order Form: Please use the standard excel order form from now on. I’ll update the site with a link to it next week when I get some time. This is important as it helps me process the turn more quickly. THIS IS NOW MANDATORY.

Non-Payment: some of you still owe me some cash. Although it may come as surprise that this is not my main source of income, I see it only polite that you pay for the occasionally night out. So, if you’re under zero next turn I’ll not process you orders.

Version 6: Lords 24 uses version 6 of the basic rules

The Map: The map now includes India as well as Europe, Central Asia and Africa. I’ve greyed out repeated areas on the maps to make my life easier. However, this means some player nations are split across more than one map. I may increase the size of the main map but I’ll have to think on this.

Tithes and Tribute: I think these are automatically updated by the stats program, so no need to declare them in your orders.

Control of the Papacy and Religious Orders: In Lords 24 we will not always have a player Pope (or Caliph etc for that matter) and the following rules are used to determine which player faction controls the Pope’s actions, Papacy Rules. I’ve also added some stuff about gaining support from their armies

How to make your GM happy (PLEASE READ! REALLY!):

India

Pratihara Kingdom of Kaunaj

(Hindu Civilised Open Empire)
Rajiv, Raja of Kaunaj

The city of Ranchi as built in Pundra and Kaunaj grew in size; as did the port of Mandvi. The Rajputi road network was improved with a connections being made from Kosalapala to Tripuri. The work of Rajputi missionaries in Kalinga and Orissa saw the region and its city return to Hinduism. Rajiv oversaw diplomacy with the Tripuri with marriages being arranged to Prince Mohandas, Prince Ram and the Princess Deepika.

The Western Dhara

(Hindu Civilised Open Empire)
Pajama III, King of the Dhara

Eight thousand cavalry were raised for Pajama to complete the conquest of Dharan held Tripuri. Despite being attacked by a Tripuri relief force, the army under Wapali brought Burhanpur to surrender. Dharan agents had tried to assassinate the commander of the cities garrison but he was too well protected. The outcome was still the same as he was executed by Wapali once his forced marched in Burhanpur square. .

The Palas of Bengal

(Hindu Civilised NPN Empire, Friendly to Kaunaj)
Sanjiv, Palas of Bengal

The northern lands of Sikkim were colonised with good Bengali Hindus and the city of Bihar grew in size. Bengali missionaries had some success in Gtsang but made little progress in Assam. The marriage of Prince Gyan into the Gtsang nobility saw an alliance gained form the frontier region. In an effort to stir the Dagger Order, Bindu was instructed to supervise Order houses in Jarawa, Polonarva and Seylan. His efforts in Pandya came to nothing. Geeta led the Bengali force of eight thousand men into the wilderness of Bhutan where he brutally put down any local resistance and destroyed any trace of Buddha. The Bhutanese will worship Vishnu or be damned.

South East Asia and the Islands

Kambujadesa

(Hindu Civilised Open Empire)
Vireakboth, Emperor of the Khmer

The colonisation of Tengah continued and efforts were made to clear the lands for cultivation. More colonists were sent to Selatan to further Khmer’s foothold on Borneo. The Great Aqueduct was completed to bring in fresh drinking water to the city of Angor. Vireakboth married locally and spent many months trying to figure out the best returns from his nations shipping. His son was presented at court and began to assist his father in stately affairs. It was left to Pich Pho and Heng Huynh, the Sea Dragon, to transport the colonists from Phan Bho to Selatan via Bakheng in Tengah.

The Kingdom of Thaton

(Buddhist Civilised Open Empire)
Achara, King of the Thaton

Thatonese gold was spent in improving the cities of Thon Buri and Mandalay and repairing the war-ravaged regions of Ava and Sagaing. Buddhist missionaries sent to Pegu managed to convert a few remaining Hindus to the true faith. Ratana Nai-Thim caught a fever early in 1291 and it was left to his son Achara to take control of the kingdom. Prince Kaeo was given an unfortunate match when he asked for a bride from Nanchao. Despite the best efforts of the Prince and Burut Prem, the Thatonese delegation could not pull control of Nanchao away from Tonkin.

The Dai Kingdom of Annam

(Buddhist Seafaring Open Empire)
Bhadravarman, King of Annam

Roads were built to Dai Viet and then onto the Kambujadesa border with Champa. Bharavarman married a Nachao princess and ruled the Annamese from Tonkin. Despite the royal marriage and the efforts of Chu Pao, no gain as made in Tonkin’s status with the Nanchao. However, Chen Hu was successful in bringing Shantou into the nation

The God Empire of Sri Vijaya

(Buddhist Seafaring Open Empire)
The God Emperor

Palau Burong and Sirivijaya grew in size during these years. Javan settlers landed on the islands of Bangka and Bali. On Bali, the port of Singaraja was built. Trade was established to Kaunaj from Palau Burong and the God Emperor spent many months arranging the affairs of the nation’s shipping. Missionaries to Flores and Pajajaran saw little success but the God Emperor’s marriage to a Kediri princess saw the region become an ally of Sirivijaya

Manchu’ko and Nihon

The Minamoto Shogunate

(Shinto Civilised Open Empire)
Daiei Yasumori, Shogun of the East

Aomori grew in size and many cities were greatly improved with new public works. While Daiei Yasumori ruled from Heian, Eiji continued to gain some support from the Shikoku before returning to Yamamyo. Despite his death in 1291, Kuroda Hanbei gained some more support from the Kazan Retto.

The Goryeo Kingdom

(Buddhist Civilised Open Empire)
Wang Insu, King of Goryeo

The army of Goryeo was augmented with two thousand elite horse. The road from Koguryo to Anshan was completed. Despite their best effort, missionaries from Goryeo filed to convert the pagans of Sikhote, Suifenhe and Khitan. Wang Insu spent these years ruling from Koguryo. Ho Ui-Bang collected the garrisons from Kai Ching before giving support to the missionaries in Sikhote. Elsewhere, the nation was on alert for any Mongol invasion or raid into Goryeo territory. The Khitan force fealty from Zenzun who willing submit to their more powerful neighbours.

The Land under Heaven

The Kingdom of Koueichou

(Buddhist Civilised Open Empire)
Dai Ling, Queen of Koueichou

The slow advance in rebuilding the army of Koueichou continued while Dai Ling ruled her kingdom from Szechwan. She commanded her generals to patrol the frontiers around the kingdom.

The Empire of the Western Song

(Buddhist Civilised Open Empire)
Zhi Zhen, Emperor of the Western Song

The Mongols move down to the border with the Song and Ningsia and send envoys demanding “caravans of gold” from the two nations. The Song army was augmented with five thousand elite cavalry and four thousand elite infantry, possibly in response to the Mongol threat. Tsi-Un-I and Chang-Te as well as Lanzhou grew in size. The city of Linfen was built in Houma and  Bulingir was converted by Buddhist priests. Zhi Heng was one of the last to die of the plague in 1291 and handed control of the empire to his son. Zhi Hu managed to gain the full support of Shansi before his death in 1295.

The Kingdom of Chiangning

(Buddhist Civilised Open Empire)
Song Tao, King of Chiangning

The army of Chiangning was augmented with nearly fourteen thousand men, mostly elite. Song Tao ruled from Chiangning while most of the nation’s nobility patrolled the borders. Wen Lee was tasked with persuading the city of Tai-Pei to give up its ties to the Mongols and become part of the kingdom. Sadly he died in 1291 so little progress was made.

The West

Without further ado, the news for these years in Lords 24 history...

Eastern Europe

The Varangian Rus of Kiev

(Orthodox Civilized Open Empire)
Peter, King of the Rus

The lands of Mordva and Seversk were fortified in case of any Cossack or Magyar incursion. An Order House for the Vladimirans was built in Perograd. Peter ruled from Kiev with his wife Svetlana while Prince Josef requested clerical aid from the Order of S Vladimir. The remaining forces of Kiev were placed on standby in case of any horde attack. Just as the Magyars massed on the borders of Pereaslavl and word was rushed to Pyotr, the Cossacks attacked with their Khazan allies and scattered the Magyar tribes; destroying them as a force. The Cossacks then went on to demand tribute from the Ademids but were defeated in battle by the defenders in Taman.

The Ests

(European Pagan Barbarian Open Empire)
Konrad, Kings of the Ests

Despondency ruled in the north-east.

The Grand Duchy of Poland

(Roman Catholic Civilised Open Empire)
Ziemowit Poznan III, Grand Duke of Poland

The Polish road network was upgraded with a new route built from Polotsk to Lithuania. Duke Ziemowit ruled from Poland while his son and heir Prince Mieszko travelled to Vilnia to persuade the Lithuanian city join the Duchy. He was accompanied by Roman Gorecki but the aging leader died in 1293 of a fever. His brother, Prince Plast, travelled to Silesia where he entered negotiations with the rulers of that province.

The Kingdom of Hungary

(Eastern Orthodox Civilised Open Empire)
Vajk Hunyadi, King of Hungary

Desperate measures were needed if Vajk was to keep his army together. The troops had not been paid for months and some had started to desert. His son, Prince Janos was given command of the army and after waiting for Stefan to arrive from Bakony moved quickly into Dobruja. The region was easily taken as the Uighurs were occupied further East but there was little loot to be gained. The promise of gold was enough incentive to keep the army together as they swept into Thrace. The Uighur defence was almost non-existent and Thrace fell to the Hungarian sword. The Rashidun monastery in the province was looted and razed and its Imams killed as they fed. The Uighurs put up little defence in Macedonia as well and the province was also looted. The Rashidun abbey there was looted and destroyed. The gold taken from there lands was enough to keep Vajk’s men happy for years to come.

The Uighurs were concentrating on subjugating the mountain province of Epirus.

Scandia and the Out Isles

Jarldom of Orkeneyjar

(Roman Catholic Seafaring Open Empire)
Jotun Nicolson, Jarl of Orkney

The city of Oslo was expanded around its mighty citadel and the walls of Kirkval and Ulster improved. Much gold and expertise was sent to Germany and England as well as the Order of St Denis to improve the quality of their armies. Grain was purchased from far Rus to feed the cities of the Jarldom. In Hordavil a new Order House for Le Marteau de Dieu was built but Jotun had no success in building a House in Hordaland. Jotun cemented his control on the Jarldom with both Princess Inga and Prince Balder pledging their support. His son Prince Bragi was presented to the Kirkval court and awaited instruction from his father. Requests for grain from Le Marteau could not be satisfied as the Order had none to spare. Princess Inga had no success in the Highlands as she attempted to raise an Order Preceptory for Le Marteau there. Tordal and Brother Francois assisted Garm in gaining a alliance with the region of Norway. Hildegard was accompanied by Brother Louis as she managed to gain the full support of Hordavil.

Saxon Kingdom of England

(Roman Catholic Civilized Open Empire)
Arthwin I, King of England

A royal road was built out from Wymeswold in the English heartlands to York in Northumbria. More missionaries poured in Caer Myrddin, attempting to eradicate the small heretic worshippers there. King Harry ruled from London after meddling with the affairs of the English merchants. Bishop Ambose died on his way back from Heraclea after the disastrous crusade.

Western Europe

Heiliges Romisches Reich

(Roman Catholic Civilized Open Empire)
Leopold, Holy Roman Emperor
.

Shiploads of grain were sent to the Knights in Malta and the Emperor’s newest ally in Hungary. To prevent any attack from pirates or Saracens, a great wall was built along the Provence coast. Emperor Leopold ruled from Saxony while his paranoia ran full tilt as he instructed that the whole region be checked for possible spies, traitors or even goblins. Prince Hubbert claimed the region of Austria for the Empire before cementing relations further with Meissen. A new trade route was opened up to Hungary through Austria. The Duke Albert aus Holstein took over five thousand cavalry from Provence and moved up to Saxony to prevent any possible rebellion. None was forth-coming.

Norman Kingdom of France

(Roman Catholic Civilized Open Empire)
Jean, King of France

While King Jean ruled from Paris, Prince Phillipe and Olivier patrolled the southern provinces from Aquitaine in case of any Muslim incursion. The Bishop Alberic led a delegation to La Rochelle in an attempt to gain more support from the city.

Principality of Salerno

(Roman Catholic Civilized Open Empire)
Ricardo IV, Prince of Salerno

Despair filled the court at Naples as the Ricardo dynasty looked upon their losses and wept.

The Papal States

(Roman Catholic Civilised Religious Order)
Pope Alexander II, God’s Voice on Earth

The new Pope took the name Alexander II and a led a great resurgence in the Catholic faith culminating with a mighty Cathedral dedicated to St Eleutherius in the holy city of Burgone. Monasteries were built in Calabria and the Ile de France while several Abbeys and Churches were also built.

The Akramid Caliphate

(Sunni Islam Civilized Open Empire)
Tiroman, Caliph of the Akramids

Much gold was spent on improving the trade capability of the Caliphate. Tiroman himself led a delegation of nobility and the mighty Akramid army of over seventy thousand men south to Tunisia to meet with the Adjou Aba. Despite the size of the horde, they were overwhelmed by the sheer might of Tiroman’s army. Sweetened by the promise of marriage to one of his daughters and a hefty dowry of gold, they decided the best course was to ally themselves with Tiroman and reease control of Tunisia back to the Akramids. Prince Sameer took a wife from amongst the Emir’s daughters to further cement the alliance. Ariman spent these years attempting to reduce the bad feeling amongst the conquered people of Leon. Derth had little success exploring past the Bight of Benin and lost most of his small fleet to African pirates.

The Order of St Denis

(Roman Catholic Civilised Religious Order)
Aric the Bold, Grandmaster of the Order of St Denis, Scourge of Islam

The royal road was extended from Santa Maria to the Aquitaine border. Despite some efforts to conceal the gift, it became common knowledge that Aric the Bold had travelled north to the Orkneys to collect two hundred warships from the generous Jarl. Attempts to build Order Houses in the Le Marteau heartlands fail miserably and Aric returns to Ile De France in despair. Ramone continued his quest of repentance at his cowardice during the battles in Thrace.

The Kingdom of Aragon

(Roman Catholic Civilised Open Empire)
Pedro III , King of Aragon and Castile

Work was carried out on the road from Valencia to Aragon. Pedro made no secret of his distaste that the Order of St Denis was occupying Catalonia and rumours were rife in the Aragon court that Pedro had secretly ordered arson attacks on Santa Maria. Roberto attempted to gain better ties with Santander before his death in 1294.

The Middle East and Africa

The Buwayid Sultanate

(Sunni Islam Civilized Open Empire)
Zarife II, Sultan of the Buwayids

Quiet times in the Middle East

The Empire of Egypt

(Sunni Islam Civilized Open Empire)
Mahmud, Sultan of Egypt

The cities of Alexandria and Al’Qadi grew in size and their walls were replaced to encompass their new populations. The Egyptian Army Corps of Engineers completed the construction of dikes and windmills to reclaim much needed land in the fertile Nile delta in Mansura. The Sea Lords in Carsk were to benefit from grain sent from Alexandria’s harvest. Egyptian missionaries were active throughout the Coptic provinces as well as far Crimea. Mahmud ruled from Alexandria after checking the defences of the city were fully prepared for any attack. He ordered Prince Badr to check for any nefarious activity in the city but the Prince could not find any evidence of any cult or traitors; although many rumours were followed of Assassin sects and Fatimid supporters. Setting off from Alexandria, Faruq Dahrr gained rutters of the Sea of Dogs but came to grief in the Canaries were storms caused the loss of nearly half his fleet of twenty ships. The able Kahzid El Qatar fell to old age while in talks with the Syrian Emir, halting any progress there.

The Al’Bahri

(Sunni Islam Civilized Religious Order)
Umar, First Sea Lord of Carsk

The Sea Lords remained at their estates in Carsk.

Ar Rassid Imamat as Sa'Na

(Sunni Islam Civilized Open Empire)
Sheik Umar

Sheik Umar embarked with his army at the port of Sa’Na before setting off for the island of Socotra. Expecting some defence from the Caliph’s forces, the Sheik was prepared for some losses to his army but the island was surprisingly undefended and both it and the city of Al Cotra fell easily. Prince Khalid spent some time discussing the affairs of trade with Aden’s merchants before sending a request for grain from the African Copts in Sennar. There was a popular uprising in Berbera as the African province threw off Ogaden oppression and rejoined Aden.

Usama-Yoruba Onium of Ibo

(African Pagan Civilised Open Empire)
Mahabharata, King of the Ibo

Now that the threat from the Adjou Aba had finally dispersed, the Iboans spent their efforts in improving the cities of Ijebu and Tsofou Birni. Although no concrete evidence was found, it came to the attention of Ilbayi that a powerful criminal organisation called the Ogboni had been behind a series of bandit attacks in Ibo. Ilbayi took control of the army while his generals continued to smooth over relations with Songhai and Goroul.

The Mwene-Mutapa Empire

(African Unkulkulun Civilised Open Empire)
Nyambo II, Emperor of Mapungubwe

Nyambo II, newly crowned Great King of The Mwene-Mutapa Empire made the following declaration to Malay-Betis: "We urge you to exhibit stern caution. You are to unconditionally keep distance from Mapun shores, ports and lands or risk invasion and decimation. Should Malay-Betis keep to themselves, so will the Mwene-Mutapa Empire. So has it been said, so shall it be written". The Maly-Betis duly complied. The great animal reserve in Vaal and the mercantile exchange in Rozwi were completed. Throughout the lands near the Cape the word of Unkunkulu was heard and obeyed. Nyambo II had taken his place on the great throne of Mapungubwe and saw to affairs of trade and family. It was left to Uffu to continue his efforts in persuading the lands of the Gorongo to fully join with the empire. Sadly the old general died in 1293, savaged by lions whilst hunting. The wild tribes of Herero pledged to support Nyambo in times of conflict.
