CAMPAIGN TWENTY-FOUR – THE WEST
New for T73
Noble House rules have
been added – please take a look at these here.
New Spreadsheet
for the Renaissance has been created – this can be found here and must be used
from now on.
Some
tinkering with the Religious
Order rules.
I’m going back to standard
movement rules – sigh – as it is just taking too much time to rewrite these.
Please continue to give your orders in year chunks though – The newly created spreadsheet
should help with this
New for T59
Paths to victory: There are several options open to a player when an NPN has been defeated
Dealing with hordes: Hordes can be dealt with a number of ways rather than just an outright battle. These are
You can also use a combination of the above. If the horde becomes
a FA or A, you can direct its attacks or its path of migration.
New for T57
Non-player rules update: I’ve updated the NPN
rules to fit better with the Lord’s system. Please check them out.
New for T53
Restrictions on Royal Marriages: Due to the complications
arising from these rules only K, H or P leaders can benefit from a Royal
Marriage. Members of the Royal Family that have not come into play are not
considered eligible. Also, Primate, Order and Secret Empire positions are not
eligible for marriage bonuses. These are meant to be diplomatic arrangements
between sovereign states.
New for T52
East – West Split: I’m going to try to
split the East and the West parts of the game so that I can process the orders
quicker – don’t know if or how it will work yet but lets
see if it’ll happen
New for T51
No Orders: If I don’t get any orders in for a
position and the player doesn’t answer my emails then I’ll put the position
back to a NPN and put aside the players cash (if any) until they pick it or
another nation up again.
New for T50
Request Royal Marriage: Used to ask a NPN
nation for a bride for one of your Princes or a suitor for one of your little
Princesses. Cost is 6AP, Charisma based. The leader doesn’t have to be in the
NPNs capital but if he isn’t then he needs to be in your homeland/capital.
New for T49
Naval Reaction and Blockade: Naval Reactions can
only occur when there is action in a Sea Zone that the fleet is based at. The
fleet has to be based from a port and not the Sea Zone. Also, the Reaction can
only occur when your own lands or those of an ally benefiting from a Defensive
Pact marriage bonus are attacked. It also applies to any merchant fleets you
operate through the Sea Zone in the case of piracy. Naval Blockade’s only work if your fleet is
based in the same Sea Zone as the target port and you spend all (every single
one) of your APs in the blockade. The fleet must be based from a port and not a
Sea Zone.
New for T48
The use of fleets for Reaction and mitigating
the effects of Pirates: My understanding has now changed since we GMs have had some
discussion on the list. The use of Reaction has been explained on the Wiki and
Patrol is no longer used in the Base Rules.
Reaction
Trade Route Escorts
Updated NPN and Primacy rules: Yep, been tinkering again but I feel a almost serene sense of satisfaction with my latest offering. See what you think.
Added the ability to hire mercenary captain when there is no mercenary company available: See the mercenary tables
New for T47
Improved cultivation at TL5: If a nation has reached the dizzy heights of TL5 than it can benefit from improved cultivation. You can Improve a cultivated homeland region from 2GPv to 3GPv, or any other controlled cultivated region from 1GPv to 2GPv. This is a level one megalithic construction.
New for T46
NPNS: I’ve tweaked the NPN and Primacy/Order rules a
little to make them fit better with the 24 game. I’ve also reduced their overall
RRV to make diplomacy easier.
New for T45
New Rivers: I’ve added in some new possible rivers
onto the map. These are rivers that were once passable by light traffic
(remember Cogs cannot travel on rivers) and have now become silted up. You can
dredge a stretch of the river (along one region border edge) as a 0.5 level
project.
Gripes:
Agro as
conversion – this has restrictions (see 2.11.5.3) which I will be enforcing
from now on.
Rivers can
only support light ships – as far as I know Cogs cannot travel on rivers. This
also includes Cogs built for trade.
New Primates: We have two new Primate positions this
turn. Jumal Skyfather,
which is an Estonian god and the Coptic Church based out of Axum.
New for T44
Minor islands and City States: I’ll be allowing minor
islands (Corfu, Jerba, Wight etc)
and city states to be used as locations from T44. Just let me know the
rationale behind why you want it separate and if reasonable I’ll add it in.
Once they are created as locations, they obey all the rules of islands etc.
However, their Gpv cannot go above 0.
Flooding: The last few turns have seen a massive
increase in the amount of flooding that has occurred. It appears that the years
are getting warmer and wetter. As a result of this some of the minor rivers on
the map are once again becoming passable to river traffic.
Denmark: Following on from the Minor Islands stuff, you
can see that Denmark is now separated out to Jutland and Syaland
(Zeeland).
Announcements
and items of note
General Stuff: Please use my Paypal account (stephenbrunt@yahoo.co.uk)
for all Lords’ 24 payments. If you cannot use this facility then please let me
know and I will see what I can do about filtering US funds to my account. I may
also stop using the throneworld email address due to
the mass of spam I’m getting!
Order Form: Please use the standard excel order form
from now on. I’ll update the site with a link
to it next week when I get some time. This is important as it helps me process
the turn more quickly. THIS IS NOW MANDATORY.
Non-Payment: some of you still owe
me some cash. Although it may come as surprise that this is not my main source
of income, I see it only polite that you pay for the occasionally night out.
So, if you’re under zero next turn I’ll not process you orders.
Version 6: Lords 24 uses version 6 of the basic rules
The Map: The map now includes
India as well as Europe, Central Asia and Africa. I’ve greyed out repeated
areas on the maps to make my life easier. However, this means some player
nations are split across more than one map. I may increase the size of the main
map but I’ll have to think on this.
Tithes and Tribute: I think these are
automatically updated by the stats program, so no need to declare them in your
orders.
Control
of the Papacy and Religious Orders: In Lords 24 we will not always have
a player Pope (or Caliph etc for that matter) and the
following rules are used to determine which player faction controls the Pope’s
actions, Papacy Rules.
I’ve also added some stuff about gaining support from their armies

Tiroman V, Caliph of the Akramids
|
The death of Tiroman V in 1423 came as a shock to the Caliphate as he was only in his mid-forties. His son, Tiroman VI, quickly took control of the Caliphate. He had little of his father’s diplomatic flair but was greatly liked throughout the Andalusian court. Despite the loss of Liguria to the German’s, Akramid priests were still busy preaching in Liguria and Savoy. The new Caliph was also blessed with a young daughter by Brinn of the Zirid but sadly two further children died shortly after childbirth. Nearly the entire entourage of Akramid nobility travelled to the city of Badajoz to persuade the lord of the city to commit to the Caliphate. Poor Hisham proved too frail for the journey and succumbed to a fever en-route to the city. Led by Kazim, the remaining diplomats of Tomas and Saladin were able to establish an alliance. It was left to Admiral Mikhael to ensure the Caliphates safety from the fleet stationed in Seville. The fleet had recently been augmented by over forty new Caravels commissioned before Tiroman VI’s demise. |

The Patriarch of Boure,
Oni of Ibo
|
The cities of Akwanga and Jumagi both few and were lavished with extensive public works. King Boure continued to hunt down the pervasive Ogboni and remove them from Iboan life. Purges of the population were carried out across the Onium but it seemed that little remained of the cult in Boure’s lands. Boure was assisted by N’aban in ruling the Onium from Ibo. His young son, Boure II was declared his heir. Before returning to Ibi, N’bona gained an alliance from Benin and cemented the deal with a young bride for Boure. Leaving the cavalry north of the Tsetse fly line, General N’cana moved the Iboan army south to protect the homeland around Ife. N’do was able to gain tribute from the Oyo before travelling across the Niger to Nupe |

Lamman, Sultan of the Buwayids
|
Once again the lands of the Sultanate prospered and its cities grew in size. Most of the nations targeted by Buwayid agents for their technology were now wise to their actions and managed to thwart any attempts to steal any knowledge. The Sultan’s wife, Saranee from the House of Zaid, was unable to produce any children that lived beyond infancy leaving Lamman without an heir. Before his death in 1424, Yamain Sa Iban was able to gain an alliance with the Lords of Hastor. Lord Ingar meanwhile continued to woo the Farasi and gained the full support of the city for the Sultanate. |

Philippe, King of France
|
Some of the vast treasury of France was spent in improving the ports of Marseilles and Calais. These years also saw the cities of Tours and La Rochelle grow in size. The road out of Nerdone was extended almost all of the way to the Burgundian border. The House of Valois was to yet again provide a Queen for the King after the death of Eleanor of Burgundy during childbirth. The young Queen Catherine was married in 1425 and it was hoped she would provide Philippe with a male heir. While Roger, Marshal of Aquitaine, ensured that the south was protected, Gerard travelled west to Brittany with the Princess Isabelle to secure a diplomatic tie with the House of Montfort. The Lord of Montfort was swayed from the influence of the Northmen to Paris by Isabelle’s generous dowry. |

Sigismund, King of the Germans
|
Prince Ludwig had little in common with his father but was acknowledged as one of the kingdom’s finest diplomatic minds. The King was to remain in Liguria with Count Korman for the remainder of these years to cement German control of the province. He ensured that the coasts were defended by leaving Count Heinrich in command of the fleet operating out of Cannes in Provence. With the affairs of state in disrepair, Sigismund sent Count Karlmann home to Saxony to assist Albert at the German court. Count Wilhuf remained in Vienna and managed to gain an alliance with the city. A Preceptory was built for the Knights in Provence but attempts to build another in Cannes met with failure. German missionaries had little luck in converting the conquered Moslems of Liguria. Any successes they did achieve were nullified by Akramid priests. |

Linnea I, Queen of Orkney and the Isles
|
The Icelandic port of Thingvellir was to see a mighty citadel build close to the docks. The city itself rapidly expanded and the citadel swallowed by the new streets and tenements. On the Scandinavian coast, the port of Hordavil was to see similar events as a new citadel was built for its growing population. In desolate Stornoway, a House for Le Marteau was constructed from an abandoned broch of the Old People. The Northmen’s attempt to convert the heathen Jumalis were thwarted in Ventapils by the Estonian priests. Queen Linnea continued to rule from Kirkval and oversee the mighty northern fleet. Her consort, Ewan of Caithness was often by her side as he reviewed the trading situation of the Orkneys. He continued to recruit mercenary cavalry for the royal army as well as ensuring to keep the Kirkval merchants in line. While the more martial Ragnhild was left in command of the cities forces, Princess Olga travelled to Kristiansand where she inspected the garrison before overseeing the construction of an Order House for Le Marteau. Before his death in the autumn of 1422, Innu Spirit-Speak of the Naskapi was able to provide Brother Latrell of Le Marteau with his knowledge of the paths into Mecatina and Manicougan. With the royal fleet under the command of Queen Linnea, it was left to Fergus of Caithness to ensure that the northlands were protected. Lady Fulla, a close friend of the Queen, travelled across the Irish Sea to Gaillimhe in Connaught in order to improve the Le Marteau House in the city. The new Preceptory was to benefit from a generous endowment from the Queen. Asvald continued to remain at the Saxon court and became a staunch friend of the English King Eadig. Before his death in 1423, Ovar had been tasked with ensuring that the scattered Orkneyjar garrisons were fully supplied. It fell to Wotan to complete Ovar’s mission after his death and deliver gifts for the English king before returning to Kirkval. Calder was unable to persuade the Count of Amsterdam to commit further to the Jarldom despite bearing gifts from the New World. His lack of progress led Calder to drink himself to death just short of his 60th birthday. |

Tanguy, Hammer of God
|
The Grandmaster travelled to Holland to consecrate an Oratory in the province. Agents of the Order had been active there promoting the benefits of cooperation with the Le Marteau over that of the out-dated Order of St Denis. Prince Latrell accompanied the Naskapi Chief Innu Spirit-Speak to the wilds of Manicougan and Mecatina but found little evidence of people in the vast wilderness. With no tribe appearing to own those lands, Latrell laid claim to them in the name of God and Le Marteau. Sadly, the popular Innu was to perish in the wilds whilst exploring Mecatina and only Latrell was to return. Brother Francis was to improve the Order’s presence in Germany by improving the House in Alsace to a Preceptory. Returning from the West, Brother Brian aided Henri in patrolling the seas around Kirkval. Although the order was able to make some headway in converting the Moslems of Liguria and the Jumalis of Musa, the local priests were quick to quash these new converts. |

Peter, King of the Rus
|
Now fully part of the Rus Kingdom, the lands of the Pereaslavl was further settled by farmers from Kiev and Chernigov. The city of Pechnograd was to increase in size and its curtain wall replaced to enclose the growing city. Peter made Siegfried his heir, much to the disgust of Harald and Ragnar who believed they were overlooked. Peter was able to support the starving Order of St Vladimir by shipping grain to their fortress in Kiev. He was also able to make use of the slighted princes by getting them to secure more clerical aid from the Order. Peter had designs on Polovotsy and sent Smirnov of Smolensk to the Moslem region to gather some support and converts. |

Alexios, Emperor of East Rome
|
Another frigate was constructed in the Roman dockyards and assigned to the fleet of Duke Katakalon in the city. The city’s factories had begun the process of casting cannons for the newly raised squadron of artillery. Roman missionaries were active in Taman but failed to find many new converts. Attempts to raise an Order House for the Knights also met with failure in Morea. Agents of the Emperor were active in preventing any more of the highly prized Roman technology from falling into the hand of the Buwayids. The Emperor was to marry Lord Nerio of Attica’s daughter Anna. Although not as radiant as Alexios had hoped, his young wife was able to provide him with a daughter in the first years of their marriage. The Duke Katakalon continued to command the fleet out of Constantinople and was joined by Duke Stefans once he had shipped a new roster of troops to garrison Abasigia and Sevastopol. Duke Isaac had brokered the marriage of Anna to the Emperor and remained in Attica to secure relations with Lord Nerio. |
The Order of St Vladimir

Dmitry, Grandmaster of the Order of St Vladimir
|
The Order had over-stretched itself and struggled to supply the rank and file of the brotherhood. To that end, Dmitry granted estates and farms to the laity in the newly gained lands of Goryn in an attempt to reduce the burden on the Order’s resources. He could do little else but oversee this settlement from Varangia and ensure that the promised grain had arrived from the Rus. |
The Knights of Malta
(Roman Catholic Civilised
Religious Order)
Guy, Grandmaster of the Knights of Malta
|
The city of Valetta grew in size and its old curtain wall replaced to secure the city from the Al’Bahri or any other threat. Attempts to build holdings for the Order in Lombardy and Taranto met with little success despite the good relations the Knights enjoyed with Salerno. An outbreak of dysentery swept through Malta and Valetta in 1424 and although the majority of the population weathered its effects it took the lives of the Grandmaster and Brother Bertrand. The two great knights were of the same age and suffered most as the outbreak started in the Order’s kitchens. The mantle of Grandmaster then fell to ageing Brother Guy who was in Sicily inspecting the Order’s House on the island. |
The Noble House of Byzantium
(Roman Catholic Civilised

Anastasius Makrembolites,
Chairman of the Noble House of Byzantium
|
Ships built by the merchants were transferred to the control of the Romans as payment for their protection. Makrembolites expanded his trading network by establishing routes to Salerno, Sicily, Olbia and the Akramids. The old trade route to the Ademids was closed after their defeat and the loss of their port. Makrembolites himself was to open a Branch Office in Pechneg but had no success in securing an Agent in the city of Pechnograd. His Factor, Ioannis, travelled to the Knight’s fortress in Valletta and there secured the services of an Agent for the company. |
