Lords of the Earth

CAMPAIGN TWENTY-FOUR

Turn 75

1370 ~ 1374 Anno Domini

772 ~ 775 in the year of the Hegira

4007 (Metal Dog) - 4011 (Wood Tiger)

New for T73

Noble House rules have been added – please take a look at these here.

New Spreadsheet for the Renaissance has been created – this can be found here and must be used from now on.

Some tinkering with the Religious Order rules.

I’m going back to standard movement rules – sigh – as it is just taking too much time to rewrite these. Please continue to give your orders in year chunks though – The newly created spreadsheet should help with this

New for T59

Paths to victory: There are several options open to a player when an NPN has been defeated

  1. Take the victory conditions (see NPN rules) available for NPNs and allow the NPN to go its own way. This is a useful option if you do not want to increase your imperial size or bother with the NPNs internal affairs.
  2. Keep it as either Pacified or Pacified Tributary. You will not get victory conditions but will get income from the NPNs Homeland/Friendly regions and cities. Also, as the years from conquest marker goes up it may turn Friendly or Tributary. Using this option treats the NPN as a super-region.
  3. Old school, you will have to take the regions you want and conquer each in turn. If the capital is taken then some of the NPNs ratings will be added to yours if higher. The NPN will cease to exist.

Dealing with hordes: Hordes can be dealt with a number of ways rather than just an outright battle. These are

  1. Threaten them. Hordes respond to a show of strength and may leave you alone if confronted with enough force.
  2. Bribe them. They are looking for gold and lands to settle or pillage so if you offer them it on a plate they may well go away. They may also just take it and attack anyway.
  3. Use diplomacy. It does work and I suggest chucking in a royal princess or two.

You can also use a combination of the above. If the horde becomes a FA or A, you can direct its attacks or its path of migration.

New for T57

Non-player rules update: I’ve updated the NPN rules to fit better with the Lord’s system. Please check them out.

New for T53

Restrictions on Royal Marriages: Due to the complications arising from these rules only K, H or P leaders can benefit from a Royal Marriage. Members of the Royal Family that have not come into play are not considered eligible. Also, Primate, Order and Secret Empire positions are not eligible for marriage bonuses. These are meant to be diplomatic arrangements between sovereign states.

New for T52

East – West Split: I’m going to try to split the East and the West parts of the game so that I can process the orders quicker – don’t know if or how it will work yet but lets see if it’ll happen

New for T51

No Orders: If I don’t get any orders in for a position and the player doesn’t answer my emails then I’ll put the position back to a NPN and put aside the players cash (if any) until they pick it or another nation up again.

New for T50

Request Royal Marriage: Used to ask a NPN nation for a bride for one of your Princes or a suitor for one of your little Princesses. Cost is 6AP, Charisma based. The leader doesn’t have to be in the NPNs capital but if he isn’t then he needs to be in your homeland/capital.

New for T49

Naval Reaction and Blockade: Naval Reactions can only occur when there is action in a Sea Zone that the fleet is based at. The fleet has to be based from a port and not the Sea Zone. Also, the Reaction can only occur when your own lands or those of an ally benefiting from a Defensive Pact marriage bonus are attacked. It also applies to any merchant fleets you operate through the Sea Zone in the case of piracy.  Naval Blockade’s only work if your fleet is based in the same Sea Zone as the target port and you spend all (every single one) of your APs in the blockade. The fleet must be based from a port and not a Sea Zone.

New for T48

The use of fleets for Reaction and mitigating the effects of Pirates: My understanding has now changed since we GMs have had some discussion on the list. The use of Reaction has been explained on the Wiki and Patrol is no longer used in the Base Rules.

Trade Route Escorts

Updated NPN and Primacy rules: Yep, been tinkering again but I feel a almost serene sense of satisfaction with my latest offering. See what you think.

Added the ability to hire mercenary captain when there is no mercenary company available: See the mercenary tables

New for T47

Improved cultivation at TL5: If a nation has reached the dizzy heights of TL5 than it can benefit from improved cultivation. You can Improve a cultivated homeland region from 2GPv to 3GPv, or any other controlled cultivated region from 1GPv to 2GPv. This is a level one megalithic construction.

New for T46

NPNS: I’ve tweaked the NPN and Primacy/Order rules a little to make them fit better with the 24 game. I’ve also reduced their overall RRV to make diplomacy easier.

Second Positions in the East: As I’ve not got a lot of players in the East, I would be willing to allow a second position from existing players. Let me know if you’re interested.

New for T45

New Rivers: I’ve added in some new possible rivers onto the map. These are rivers that were once passable by light traffic (remember Cogs cannot travel on rivers) and have now become silted up. You can dredge a stretch of the river (along one region border edge) as a 0.5 level project.

Gripes:

Agro as conversion – this has restrictions (see 2.11.5.3) which I will be enforcing from now on.

Rivers can only support light ships – as far as I know Cogs cannot travel on rivers. This also includes Cogs built for trade.

New Primates: We have two new Primate positions this turn. Jumal Skyfather, which is an Estonian god and the Coptic Church based out of Axum.

New for T44

Minor islands and City States: I’ll be allowing minor islands (Corfu, Jerba, Wight etc) and city states to be used as locations from T44. Just let me know the rationale behind why you want it separate and if reasonable I’ll add it in. Once they are created as locations, they obey all the rules of islands etc. However, their Gpv cannot go above 0.

Flooding: The last few turns have seen a massive increase in the amount of flooding that has occurred. It appears that the years are getting warmer and wetter. As a result of this some of the minor rivers on the map are once again becoming passable to river traffic.

Denmark: Following on from the Minor Islands stuff, you can see that Denmark is now separated out to Jutland and Syaland (Zeeland).

Announcements and items of note

General Stuff: Please use my Paypal account (stephenbrunt@yahoo.co.uk) for all Lords’ 24 payments. If you cannot use this facility then please let me know and I will see what I can do about filtering US funds to my account. I may also stop using the throneworld email address due to the mass of spam I’m getting!

Order Form: Please use the standard excel order form

from now on. I’ll update the site with a link to it next week when I get some time. This is important as it helps me process the turn more quickly. THIS IS NOW MANDATORY.

Non-Payment: some of you still owe me some cash. Although it may come as surprise that this is not my main source of income, I see it only polite that you pay for the occasionally night out. So, if you’re under zero next turn I’ll not process you orders.

Version 6: Lords 24 uses version 6 of the basic rules

The Map: The map now includes India as well as Europe, Central Asia and Africa. I’ve greyed out repeated areas on the maps to make my life easier. However, this means some player nations are split across more than one map. I may increase the size of the main map but I’ll have to think on this.

Tithes and Tribute: I think these are automatically updated by the stats program, so no need to declare them in your orders.

Control of the Papacy and Religious Orders: In Lords 24 we will not always have a player Pope (or Caliph etc for that matter) and the following rules are used to determine which player faction controls the Pope’s actions, Papacy Rules. I’ve also added some stuff about gaining support from their armies

How to make your GM happy (PLEASE READ! REALLY!):

North Africa and Moslem Spain

The Akramid Caliphate

(Sunni Islam Civilized Open Empire)
Tiroman IV, Caliph of the Akramids

akramid

The Akramid lands continued to prosper under the guidance of Tiroman, fourth of that name. He was to rule his Caliphate from his palaces in Seville but was dismayed when no further children were born to his wife. His imams were to convert the island of Rhodes to Islam, the consequences of which were still to be felt throughout the Christian East. Beehr gained another ally in the Emir of Santiago but it was the able Behmen that re-established Akramid control over the port of Mikhael, ousting the Ligurians from North Africa.

The Buwayid Sultanate

(Sunni Islam Civilized Open Empire)
Najee
I, Sultan of the Buwayids

baghdad

After the dire effects of the plague, Najee ordered the rebuilding of the nation’s cities and public works. He was content to rule his recovering Sultanate from Baghdad, however he was only able to spend a few months with his Bithnian wife before she was to die during childbirth. More knowledge from the West came to Baghdad from Italy and Malta, allowing the learned scholars of that city further insights. It was left to Asafar to patrol the Eastern frontier in case of attack by the Persians.

Glorious Khwarzim

(Sunni Islam Civilized Open Empire)
Abu I-Ghazi Bahadur, Khan of the Khwarzim

Aziz Al Reeh had a small garrison in the province of Khazar and looked to be hopelessly outnumbered by the attacking Cossacks. However, as the Cossack Khan led his forces across the Volga, he was cut down by the Khwarzimi archers. Not only was the Khan killed but his eldest son was also struck by an arrow and died days later from his wounds. With his second son now in charge, the Cossacks pulled back to Cuman to decide the fate of the Khanate. The Ademids decided that they could now pursue their own goals and declared their independence from the Cossacks.

.

The Ogaden

Despite defending the region for a generation, the Chalbi Emirate was unable to stop the new Emir of the Ogaden taking the lands of Djibuti.  Berbera was then easily taken from the Ar Rassid’s as there was no garrison present. However, disaster struck when the Ogaden tried to take the Harar highlands, the Chalbi Emirate forced the horsemen back over the mountains after inflicting punishing losses on them.

Norman Kingdom of France

(Roman Catholic Civilized Open Empire)
Louis, King of France

image028

Even though the plague ripped through the French lands, the city of Orleans was still founded. King Louis was to lose several members of his family to the pestilence, including his wife and three young children. Eduoard was to also fall foul of the disease.  Louis was to take another wife from the House of Valois after mourning the loss of his previous spouse. The union ensured that Valois and the crown grew ever closer.

Scandia and the Out Isles

Jarldom of Orkeneyjar

(Roman Catholic Seafaring Open Empire)
Gustav Aegirson, Jarl of Orkney

As the plague swept through the Orkney lands, it was the royal family that suffered most as Gustav’s two sons and youngest daughter were to die from the disease. The plague was also to take his wife Iskwaaw of the Naskapi and Prince Gunther who was overseeing the Svear. The losses were not only amongst Hans’ family as Lady Tove, Valdar and Brother Haerveu of Le Marteau were to perish. The losses to the Orkney’s government saw Arngeirr and Folkvar retire to their estates. Hans still honoured his promise to send gold to far Kiev, the Svear and the Marteau Order. His priests were able to build a House for the Order in Fjordane. After ensuring that the merchants of the kingdom were providing the best returns for the crown, King Hans made the unusual step of proclaiming his niece Roselind Gustavdatter as his heir, the princess Sanfrida was also called to the Kirkval court to accompany Roselind. After the death of the Lady Tove from the plague, the intrepid Radulfr was determined to complete her mission in finding the elusive Micmac. It was in Caranook that Radulfr found the tribesmen and after spending a few months with their tribal elders, he returned home to Nordheim.

Saxon Kingdom of England

(Roman Catholic Civilized Open Empire)
Edward III, King of England

As the plague tore through the English lands, King Edward tried to ease the suffering from his court in London. The pestilence took young Lionel and the princess Isabella but thankfully spared Edward’s heir and the Prince William. Only Lord Lucas survived from amongst Edward’s closest supporters and was on-hand in London to support the king.

The Svear

Using Viborg’s deep harbour, the Svear merchants were able to base a new trade route to the Akramid port of Santiago. Prince Wulf had decided to interfere with the merchants shipping after conducting a census of the Svear people. He was also blessed with a young daughter during these years. The death of Queen Karina in 1373 saw Wulf take the throne without contention. Before her death, the Queen had travelled to Helsingfors in Turku with Prince Ymir to gain tribute from the eastern city.  Both Drengr and Yngvar were to die of some foul pestilence during these years but not before gaining an alliance with the Turku. Karina’s attempts to raise Order Houses for the Marteau in Sundsvall and Jamtland came to nothing as the old ways proved strong in the Northern provinces.

Le Marteau de Dieu

The death of Mael in the spring of 1370 heralded a period of hardship for the Order as the plague spread West to their lands. Brother Deniel was to perish from the disease but Brother Heranhal survived and was declared the new Prelate. Before his death, Mael had recognised his bastard son, Erwan, and the young man was to take holy orders on his majority. Mael had also declared that the Order would support the Svear as they provided a bulwark against the heathens to the East. The support was given in gold and the lands of the Turku. Now the Prelate of the Marteau de Dieu, Heranhal, moved to Brest to ensure the defence of the Order’s holdings. The Order still suffered from lack of status amongst the kingdoms of the West as it had not actively pursued its goals against the heathens. This lack of support amongst the kingdoms was seen as the reason behind its inability to increase its holdings throughout their lands.

Eastern Europe

The Varangian Rus of Kiev

(Orthodox Civilized Open Empire)
Peter IV, King of the Rus

kiev

With the Pechneg’s subdued, loyal Russians began to flood into the province from the Kievian homelands under the protection of Georgi’s garrison. Peter dispatched more gold to the Roman Empire as it began to emerge from its years of poverty and famine. The Great Wall began to take shape along the border with Pereaslavl as the Order of St Vladimir worked on the section bordering Chernigov. Peter began the slow process of rebuilding his army and was to patrol the Rus borders from Kiev. He was to sever ties with the province of Suzdal except for the most minimal of tribute. The Princess Ursula was to assist the Vladimirians in converting the Atelzukos to Christianity.  Prince Peter, along with the Princess Anastasia, Gustav and Brother Andrew were able to persuade Rasputin of the Atelzuko to commit his lands to the Rus crown. Peter pledged himself in marriage to Rasputin’s daughter.

Despite their losses from Peter’s armies, the Cossacks and their allies still numbered over one hundred thousand men. Peter had left Andreas and a very small garrison in the province to watch for Cossack activity and he could do little prevent the province from being taken. One of the Khan’s generals was rode down by Andreas’ men as they fled to Chernogov.

The Oriental Roman Empire

(Roman Catholic Civilised Open Empire)
Romanos, Emperor of East Rome

The wilderness was finally pushed back from Morea as more farms and villages were settled in the Empire’s western frontier.  Alarmed by the activities of the Buwayids, Roman agents were successful in preventing any further flow of technology to the Moslems. A small wall was built around Nikopolis to aid the garrison there. The Emperor was expecting the Knights to cede Athena after sending gold and grain to their Fortress in Valetta but the Order was to suffer from apathy and inaction and the orders to cede the city never arrived. His attempts to curry favour with the Pope were also unsuccessful. After augmenting the city garrison of Nikopolis with some of his marines and some engineers raised in Constantinople, Duke Nautalis was patrol the Aegean from the city with the Empire’s fleet.

The Order of St Vladimir

The Order once again did the bidding of the Russian Princes as the Great Wall along the Chernigov border was expanded. Sigurd was to command the Order to convert the pagans of Atelzuko to the Orthodox religion.   The delegation was led by Eric from Kiev.

Pratihara Kingdom of Kaunaj

(Hindu Civilised Open Empire)
Rajeesh, Raja of Kaunaj

Rejeesh ruled the kingdom from Kaunaj during these years, assisted by Prince Kuresh until his death in 1372. The diplomatic mission led by Sriram was to improve relations with the Sahis but the ties to the Ghazz remained strong. The rest of Rejeesh’s generals ensured the continued peace of the kingdom as they patrolled the frontier from Rajput. Trade continued to improve as the road network was extended to the Nanchao border from the mountains of Om’chu.

South East Asia and the Islands

The God-Empire of Sri Vijaya

(Buddhist Seafaring Open Empire)
Singhasari III, God-Emperor of the Sri Vijaya

As Singhasari III ruled his island kingdom from Palembang with the assistance of Lord Tribhuwanna, Prince Ompong Bata Di Toru remained in Kediri with the family of his wife.  Cities were built in Leyte, Sulawesi and the Moluccas to improve the trade with the East.  The king was not a religious man and his attempts to reduce the influence of the Church on the affairs of the Sri Vijaya kingdom proved slightly successful as the piety of his nation lessened during these years. Lord Gautama was to find no evidence of cults or other nefarious organisations as he investigated the lands of Pajajaran.

The Minamoto Shogunate

(Shinto Civilised Open Empire)
Junji Yasumori, Shogun of the East

The Shogunate’s eastern expansion continued as the wilds of Ostroma were colonised. Ky managed to gain some insight into the fabled islands of Attu, far to the east of Beringa but was unable to find them. Heian and Edo grew in size as the Shogunate benefitted from peace after the long war with the Taira. As a sign of his benevolence, Junji ceded Saga back to the Tairanese and attempted to improve relations with the defeated nation. During these years he was blessed with a young daughter and was able to spend some months assigning unwanted transport ships to merchant duties.  Roku travelled to Yamaguchi and Aomori before arriving in Sakhalin in 1372.

The Kingdom of Chiang’Ning

(Buddhist Civilised Open Empire)
Ban Ao, King of Chiang’Ning

Ao’s dynasty would be known for the completing the massive aqueduct that supplied Chiang’Ning with fresh water. Although not built in time to mitigate the effects of the Great Plague, it would not doubt prove its worth should other, lesser, epidemics inflict Ao’s kingdom.  As the nation recovered from the Plague, the cities of Chiang’Ning and Tang-Chou were to grow in size and prosperity. Ban Ao himself moved to Yen with the imperial guard to improve relations with the Yen’Ching. Ao was confident in his valued diplomatic prowess to the extent that he dismissed Ning Tang to Shentung after only a few months in the northern kingdom. It was a confidence that paid off as the Yen were more than willing to completely ally themselves to Ao’s kingdom. Ning Tang was unable to persuade the Shentung  to commit to more than the alliance signed in the years before. It was left to Admiral Khau Sung and General Meng Buwai to ensure the safety of the kingdom as they patrolled the frontiers. Tsai Zhek remained in Tangchou where he was able to exact tribute from the province. Ban Ao was a very pious man but his attempts to increase the piety of his subjects came to nothing during these years.
