CAMPAIGN TWENTY-FOUR (OLD WORLD)

The Age of the Crusades

Turn 35

1171 ~ 1175 Anno Domini
531 ~ 536 in the year of the Hegira

Announcements and items of note

General Stuff: I’m going to start charging from Turn 37. What I’ll do is set up a Paypal account and we can go from there.

Moving to version 6 of the rules: If you’ve still got v5 units then I’ll be changing them and putting any excess gold/NFPs into your treasury. If you make a case for any of the optional units (i.e. longships for the Norse – we seem to have a lot of Norse kingdoms – then you can have them. I’ve noticed that all nations have elephants in the build – I would class these as an optional unit and you must make a case to have them.)

The Map: Remember, I’ve initially cut the map back to just Western Europe with some Non-Player nations at the edges. I’ve added the Africa and Central Asia maps this turn. So if you’re up for it then drop me an email at (lords24gm@throneworld.com) and I’ll set you up. Old players of the open nations get first choice.

Current Active Non-Player Nations (ANPN) – these are the only open player positions:

The Uighurs – a settled horde currently in Bohemia

The United Isles of Iceland and Ireland – wanting vengeance for Orkneys raids

The Kingdom of Savoy – a rebel kingdom from Salerno

The Hungarian Eflak Tribes – a horde that’s come out as the dominant one in Eastern Europe

Ar Rassid Imamat as Sa'Na – a small trading nation in Arabia

The Duchy of Poland – Eastern Europeans

Heyrenik'un Armeniam – the most eastern of all Christian kingdoms

The Abasi Caliphate – the Muslim primate

The Varangian Rus of Kiev – more Eastern Europeans

Usama-Yoruba Onium of Ibo – a West African empire

The Empire of Egypt – the daddy of them all…

Mercenaries: There are mercenaries to hire, it’s just that I haven’t got around to sorting out how I put them on the newsfax. Just ask if you need them for and campaign.

Tithes and Tribute: I think these are automatically updated by the stats program, so no need to declare them in your orders.

Non-Player NationsNon-Player Nations are nations which can be influenced by player nations. The primary method of doing this is through conducting DP (Diplomacy) actions on them. All the normal levels of control are applicable to NPNs. Their RV is the sum of all their Friendly and Homeland Regions and Cities.  There is an extra level of control over Allied and that is Free State. A Free State is the same a fully player controlled nation but one where you do not want to merge your nation with the NPN. Feudal Allied, Allied and Free State NPN’s under your control provide leaders and armies to do your bidding; all others do not. Also, when an NPN king dies, a roll will be made to see if the level of control degrades. Note: It is hard to increase the status of NPN nations. Don't be surprised if your diplomacy attempts don't succeed rapidly. It is recommended that you spend lots of gold, time, and intel (Support Diplomacy operations) when doing Diplomacy on NPNs

Active NPNs: When a non-player nation becomes active, either through player activity or fate then it will undergo its own agenda. This usually means expanding its borders by the best means at its disposal, be it diplomacy or conquest.

Active NPNs will not attack or attempt to lure away regions of a nation with a greater MSI. They will attempt to gain regions of the same language and religion first before looking further afield.

If there are no candidate regions or their imperial size is such that they are inflicted with taxation penalties, they will concentrate on improving their internal affairs.

Active NPNs are now available for a player position.

A list of NPNs will be included in the MSI table as well as a listing in the newsfax as to who has any influence in them or their activation status.

The Pope - The Pope is currently run by the Western Roman Empire – see the rules below if you want to control his eminence

Control of the Papacy: In Lords 24 we will not always have a player Pope (or Caliph etc for that matter) and the following rules are used to determine which player faction controls the Pope’s actions. This can change anytime due to the make up of the votes. If the Papacy becomes an active NPN it will pursue its own goals, independent of the controlling faction. Also, if it becomes an Active NPN it will be subject to the Active NPN rules and become available for a Player.

As long as there is a non-player Pope the following rules are in effect:

  • Each Catholic Nation may declare their support for a faction or none at the end of each turn.
  • Each nation is allotted a number of votes and the faction that has the highest number of votes will control the Papacy. Votes are allocated as follows:
    • Each Catholic Nation: 1 vote
    • Each Catholic Religious Order: 1 vote
    • Whoever controls the city of Rome: 3 votes
    • Whoever controls the city of Constantinople: 1 vote (since the patriarchate of Const. is now part of the Roman Church)
    • Whoever controls the city of Thessaloniki: 1 vote (since the patriarchate of Thessaly is now part of the Roman Church)
    • For each Cathedral status within regions or cities controlled by a nation: 1/2 (one-half) a vote
    • Whoever is crowned Holy Roman Emperor: 1 vote (in addition to the national vote)

Each turn, each Nation must include on their orders how they will cast their vote. Nations or Orders may abstain from voting (and will, if they do not indicate their vote). In the unlikely event of a tie, no faction will control the Pope.

The controlling faction must appoint a player as spokesman for the upcoming turn. That player will receive the Papacy stat sheet and can issues orders for the Pope in the following turn. They will however be charged the normal turn fee.

Rules that will be moved shortly (when I get time…)

Leader conditionals in case of invasion:  If a situation occurs in which a nation is invaded and the capital or homeland is threatened, and the leaders of that nation are off doing other stuff, what happens? Do they return to save the nation? To deal with this situation and so as to avoid any chance I might resort to "second guessing" a player, I do the following: I make a combat stat check for each leader to see if they return with their troops to the capital to try to defend it. Otherwise, they continue on with whatever orders they had been originally given. The king will automatically return however. Note that all of this applies *only* in those cases where the player has not given conditional orders for their leaders.

Leader precedence: In those cases where there are multiple leaders with armies fighting together, unless otherwise specified, the main leader will be determined by rank. Thus, the main leader will first be the king (if present), then the heir, then the princes in (descending) order of age. After that (if there are only Lieutenant type leaders) then the one with the highest combat rating will be in charge.

Death of leaders during a turn: If a leader dies during the turn, I generate a new leader then and there right after they died, and have the new leader complete their planned actions. If it really matters, like during a war where every action point matters, I will have a delay of 1-12 AP (1d12) for the replacement leader to come "on-scene."

Historicity: Sometimes, when you get new leaders, I will give them names that are historical. This can sometimes happen even if you give them names, since I feel it adds something to the game. If you *really* want to give your leaders non-historical names, that's fine, I guess, just let me know. Also, just so you know, names that are clearly dorky, well, I reserve the right to modify them slightly so the game just doesn't seem silly.

New World Results: This is the news for the Old World. The New World is run currently not open for play.

The Schism: The Schism in Catholicism is technically over, due to events this turn. This does not mean that the religion is monolithic once again, nor that its troubles are over, but the Paris Papacy has been forced back into the fold, so to speak. It survives as the Anacletan Order, which is, admittedly, somewhat hostile to Rome but has been forced to acknowledge that the Pope is the head of the Catholic Church.

MAXTAX: MAXTAX is in effect, it is set at 2.5. this means that regions and cities with more than one owner (for example, if an Open Nation, a Religious Primate, and a Religious Order all have some status in the region or city) would proportionately share the tax and NFP revenues of the region/city up to the maximum tax setting.

Other campaign 24 Old World specific rules...Are listed on the website, under "Rules and Clarifications" at http://www.throneworld.com/lords/lote24/rules.html. I recommend looking at them, since although the L24 specific rules and clarifications are not listed on this newsfax, they all still remain in force and "not seeing them on the newsfax" is not an acceptable reason for not knowing about them.

Duchy of Lithuania

(Roman Catholic Barbarian Non-Player Nation)
Vilas, Duke of Lithuania
Diplomacy: None

Lithuania’s exit from the world’s stage goes without notice…

Duchy of Poland

(Roman Catholic Barbarian Non-Player Nation)
Ziemowit Curlybeard, Duke of the Poles
Diplomacy: Courland (NT), Lithuania (NT), Vilna (NT), Little Poland (NT)

The newly invigorated Curlybeard set about expanding his borders.

Oriental Roman Empire

(Roman Catholic Civilized Non-Player Nation)
Theodore the Scribe,
Diplomacy: None

A quiet time in old Constantinople.

The Bulgari Bogdan

(Asiatic Pagan Nomadic Non-Player Nation)
Khan of the Bulgari,
Diplomacy: The Neogoths (NT)

The Bulgari move east and meet the Neogoths. Negotiations were continuing over a boiled goat when the Eflak arrive.

The Ests

(European Pagan Barbarian Non-Player Nation)
Cimir,
Diplomacy: None

Too cold to do anything…

The Hungarian Eflak Tribes

(Asiatic Pagan Nomadic Non-Player Nation)
Khan of the Eflak Tribes,
Diplomacy: The Magyarshorzag (NT), The Romani (NT), The Bulgari (Allied), The Neogoths (Incorporated), The Cossacks (Incorporated)

Being the largest of the three tribes, the Hungarians quickly moved to consolidate their position. The Magyars and the Romani were persuaded to return to their herds while the Bulgari, the Neogoths and the Cossacks joined them on the steppe.

The Magyarskorzag

(Asiatic Pagan Nomadic Non-Player Nation)
Khan of the Magyars,
Diplomacy: None

The Khan of the Magyars was persuaded by his Eflak neighbour to return to the steppe.

The Romani

(Asiatic Pagan Nomadic Non-Player Nation)
Khan of the Romani,
Diplomacy: None

The Romani had plans to strip the rich lands of Bochnia bare but were stopped by the Hungarians before they could finish.

The Rum Khanate of Turkiye

(Roman Catholic Civilized Open Empire)
Tyox, The Vanguard
Diplomacy: Apamea (A)

Tyox finally succumbed to death at the age of 72 and the Khanate passed to his son, Alp Arslan. His wife, Zuleika, was so grief stricken that she also failed to survive.  The ageing Bishop Filos dies in his sleep (some say there was no noticeable difference). The rich lands of Sicily were stripped of their wealth to pay for the excesses of the Bithnian court. Although none of the gold seemed to flow back to Bithnia – corruption it appears is not confined to the duplicitous sycophants in the royal palace.

The Varangian Rus of Kiev

(Eastern Orthodox Civilized Non-Player Nation)
Thorfinn II,
Diplomacy: Kalinin (NT), Suzdal (NT), Kir (NT), Kostroma (NT)

Thorfinn was wakened from his stupor by the energetic exploits of his neighbour, Curlybeard. The rapid expansion of Kiev was not without issue as the scribes of the Kievian court, unaccustomed to the pressure of work, struggled to keep up with the extra burden.

The Western Roman Empire

(Roman Catholic Civilized Open Empire)
Euthemius, son of Christophorus,
Diplomacy: Thrace (NT)

Christophorus was delighted at the news of his treacherous son’s death and when news also came of Nikephorus’s demise he thought that he must surely return to power. His dreams were short lived when the Roman court decided to uphold Euthemius decree and continue to hold him in exile. Theodotus’s suit to the Constantine emperor was ignored and he spend many a year idling his time away in that fair city.

The Western Uighur Khanate

(Asiatic Pagan Nomadic Non-Player Nation)
Khagan Thakir II,
Diplomacy: Franconia (PT), Moravia (PT)

Thakir pushed his borders out east and west into the German and Czech lands. Gone was the rape and pillage of his youth – now the ageing Khan was looking to include them into his empire, albeit with the aid and sword and spear. He laughed aloud when he saw the French army in May 1172 – less than quarter of his hardened horsemen. How could such a pathetic rabble force him back to Bohemia! His work in Franconia was unfinished and except for news of some German stragglers being slaughtered uneventful. In September of the same year his return to Bohemia was met by the French again. This time the able Bishop Adhemar was caught unaware and many a man from Maine and Normandy were left in that far land.

Middle East

Heyrenik'un Armeniam

(Roman Catholic Barbarian Non-Player Nation)
Hieriea Amirspalar,
Diplomacy: Georgia (NT), Pontus (NT), Cappadocia (NT), Vasi (PT)

Amirspalar began to reassert his rule on the far lands of Christendom.

The Abasi Caliphate

Mustafa, Sword of Allah
Diplomacy: None

Mustafa had many affairs of state to deal with.

The Buwayid Sultanate

(Sunni Islam Civilized Non-Player Nation)
Awud ibn Zarife,
Diplomacy: None

A time for the Muslim nations of the east to stir….

The Hatamid Emirat

(Sunni Islam Civilized Non-Player Nation)
Emir of the Hatamids,
Diplomacy: None

The holy lands need a strong ruler to keep them in Mohamed’s embrace…

North Africa

Empire of Egypt

(Sunni Islam Civilized Non-Player Nation)
Badr II,
Diplomacy: None

The greatest empire on earth began to eye the rich lands of the Coptic south.

The Cypriot Pirates

(Sunni Islam Seafaring Religious Order)
Jamis,
Diplomacy: None

Content to spend their time at ease.

Ummayad Sultanat al Oran

(Sunni Islam Civilized Non-Player Nation)
Cahtalon,
Diplomacy: None

Why worry when life is good…

Western Europe

Das Deutches Konigsreich

(Roman Catholic Civilized Open Empire)
Frederick Barborossa,
Diplomacy: Austria (PT – then rebels), Slovakia (PT – then rebels), Bavaria (PT), Passau (PT), Swabia (P), Ulm (PT), Tyrol (FA), Alsace (FA)

Frederik was everything his father wasn’t; a ruthless and ambitious man he pushed his men to their very limit. The Duke of Bremen was ordered to take his men into the Uighur heartlands – the last that was heard from the Bremen was a scout in August 1171 saying that the Uighur horde was vast, numbering over forty thousand man and horse. The Maltese knight, Modesitt along with the adventurous Pope, met the German forces in Austria later that year, saying that although they had seen the Bremens at a distance they never had the chance to meet up with them. The German forces themselves pulled into Austria in July 1172 meeting minimal resistance they moved onto Slovakia and then Bavaria. It was in Bavaria that Frederick committed the slaughter of the Bohemian Duke’s family – forever destroying Sviatel’s hope of regaining his lost lands. Swabia was also put under German control. With the demise of Bohemia, the lords of Tyrol and Alsace pledge their allegiance to the German crown. In the north, Federik was not so successful, his attempts to crush the rebellions in Pomern and Lausatia met with no success. Holstein was even more determined to remain independent.

Duchy of Bohemia

(Roman Catholic Civilized Non-Player Nation)
Sviatel,
Diplomacy: Alsace (A) – then lost…

Sviatel was pleased when the German Barborossa came to Bavaria to aid him in his time of need against the Uighur scum. As the German Emperor strode through the streets of Passau news was brought to the Duke of his dark intent. No time to waste, Sviatel barely escaped with his loyal house guard before the Germans slaughtered the Czech court. Bohemia is no more, destroyed by Frederik’s evil ambition.

Hyperborean Italia of Savoy

(Roman Catholic Barbarian Non-Player Nation)
Princess Lydia,
Diplomacy: None

Quiet times in northern Italy

Jarldom of Orkeneyjar

(Roman Catholic Seafaring Open Empire)
Bjorn Torvaldson,
Diplomacy: Armagh (P)

Bjorn was concerned that the fair people of Perth were feeling undervalued and a great ceremony was held in their honour in 1171. Sadly, prince Halfdan died in the same year leaving the able Ingvarr to carry out the invasion of Armagh. The city in Ulster fell without loss and the Orkneyman managed to evade the Icelander fleet. Prince Domnall was also afflicted with the flux and died in the spring of 1174 – leaving the ageing Bjorn to outlive his sons. Maybe if prince Yngvarr had known of the demise of his brothers he may not have disappeared en route to Malta – nothing has been heard of him, his crew or the gold he carried since he passed Gebel al’Tarik. Following the English invasion of Munster, Lar Svenson managed to escape and head back to Kirkval.

Kingdom of Svear

(Roman Catholic Seafaring Open Empire)
Gustaf,
Diplomacy: Skanet (NE), Segervik (NE)

Old Gustaf passed away without trouble and Erik Gustafson was proclaimed Jarl of the all the Svear. Sadly prince Orjan also died during these years along with the noble Valdemar.

Le Royaume de Bourgogne

(Roman Catholic Civilized Non-Player Nation)
Phillipe II,
Diplomacy: None

Southern France was content to be at ease.

Norman Kingdom of France

(Roman Catholic Civilized Open Empire)
Louis VI,
Diplomacy: Paris (F), Vermandois (A)

Louis again took a wife from the Parisian nobility; unfortunately, the young bride died in childbirth – is a coincidence that the nobility take the air at St Cast whenever Louis is in town? Sibylla was beginning to feel overlooked when she was married off to the Count of Vermandois; bringing that region closer the Norman throne. The mighty French army led by Bishop Adhemar went east in defence of the Christian lands of Bohemia. The force of a little under 10,000 met the mighty Uighur in the fields of Franconia and forced the Turk to retreat! What a mighty and gracious victory God had given them. The French than pushed onwards into Bohemia itself and started to smite the heathen in these troubled lands. September came and the Uighurs returned with little warning. This time the Turk got the better of the able Bishop and his force was forced to flee through Thuringia to Alsace.

Principality of Salerno

(Roman Catholic Civilized Open Empire)
Ricardo Castillo,
Diplomacy: Lombardy (PT), Vincencia (PT), Romagna (PT), Bologna (PT), Spoleto (PT)

Ricardo made the treacherous Octavio pay for his disloyalty by invading the lands of Lombardy by way of Romagna and Spoleto. The sides were evenly matched but Ricardo managed to get the better of the traitors and sealed the fate of the Lomdardian kingdom.

Republic of Venice

(Roman Catholic Civilized Non-Player Nation)
Marcus, Doge of Venice
Diplomacy: None

Verona was returned to Venetian rule, albeit the Papal army are still stationed there.

Saxon Kingdom of England

(Roman Catholic Civilized Open Empire)
Edward,
Diplomacy: Munster (P), Diva (A)

The Earl of Mercia was lucky to avoid the Icelandic fleet, beaching his transports only hours before the islanders arrived along the Munster coast. Munster itself fell quickly to the English forces and Mercia remained in the province to ensure its loyalty. The prosperity of England continued unabated as the cities of the realm grew in size again, rivalling the capital in their size.

The Akramid Caliphate

(Sunni Islam Civilized Open Empire)
Mohamar,
Diplomacy: Badajoz (T), Galacia (NE)

Mohamar continued to strengthen his hold on the Iberian peninsula with grand schemes and fortifications. The city of Quinn was built in New Castille. On his death in 1172, his son Mohammed continued his great works, there was the barest murmur of discontent and all was well within the Caliphate. Missionary work in Galacia continued unabated but failed to see the success of earlier years; maybe due the death of the old Caliph or a possible resurgence against the teachings of the Koran.

The Anacletan Order

(Roman Catholic Civilized Religious Order)
Bertrand,
Diplomacy: None

The order was happy to sit quietly.

The Dukedom of Burgundy

(Roman Catholic Civilized Non-Player Nation)
Bernard de Baileul, Duke of Burgundy
Diplomacy: None

More wine drunk in the southern France.

The Kingdom of Lombardy

(Roman Catholic Civilized Non-Player Nation)
Octavio Brucellus,
Diplomacy: None

The Kingdom of Lombardy is no more, destroyed by Salerno’s wrath.

The Kingdom of Savoy

(Roman Catholic Civilized Open Empire)
Son of Scungili,
Diplomacy: Switzerland (A)

Seeing the writing on the wall, Scungili the Younger decided to enlist Swiss help.

The Kingdom of Spain

(Roman Catholic Civilized Open Empire)
Juan,
Diplomacy: None

Quiet times in Spain.

The Knights of Malta

(Roman Catholic Civilized Religious Order)
Grand Master Stephan, Valletta
Diplomacy: None

Master Modesitt was dispatched to aid the Franco-German advance against the Uighurs while Stephan concentrated on expanding the Order’s trade network.

The Norwegians

(European Pagan Seafaring Non-Player Nation)
Olaf the Witless,
Diplomacy: None

Olaf finally got his court in order; even it was then heavily taxed by his Svear overlords

The Papal States

(Roman Catholic Civilized Religious Primacy)
Pope Victor II,
Diplomacy: None

While the Pope travelled north to assist the Holy Roman Empire, Cardinal Lorenzo travelled to Verona to restore the Venetian Republic. Much gold was given to the fledgling Knights of Malta.

United Isles of Iceland & Eire

(Roman Catholic Seafaring Non-Player Nation)
Sven Olafson,
Diplomacy: None

Sven was trying to stem the tide of English and Orkney aggression.
