Turn Zero

1000-1005 AD

Announcements & Comments

News

16 June 1998

The newsfax is now complete. I've added the results for India, Indochina, Indonesia and East Asia. The results for Africa are limited to nations within trade range reach of existing nations.

India, Indochina, Indonesia, East Asia, Oceania

Any non-player nation which is in contact, either by trade or by locality, with a player nation will be detailed below. The other nations will only be known by their ISI stats. This will be the case for nations in Europe, the Middle East and North Africa from turn one onwards.

Africa

Because we have no players in Africa as of yet I will only be detailing the ones which are in contact with other nations currently in play in Europe, the Middle East or India. You may be able to glean some idea of their strength from the ISI listing.

12 June 1998

We have an excellent player base in Europe and the Middle East; the Far East and India now needs filling up but the non-player nations should keep a lid on anyone having too easy a ride. The results from turn zero have been really entertaining, with Venice being eliminated from play (or has it?) and Eire being badly mauled. It’s no surprise that it’s been the NPNs that have borne the brunt (no pun intended) of the fighting.

The newsfax for the Far East should be out on Monday, along with the MSI ratings etc of all nations in play. Its been a lot of work but I knew that before the game started. The next few turns should be processed a bit quicker!

Order format

Can I ask all players to send in the orders in the format below. I know it may be a bit of a pain for you but it certainly makes my life easier and makes accurate calculation of the bonuses and any reaction results a million times easier.

00 K555 Name 10i (Troops before)/2i (Troops after) {AP Available (30)}
>From Homeland {AP Spent, AP Total}
Move to Region1 (w,c) {2, 2}
Move to Region2 (w,u) {3, 5}

DP + 14 {18, 23}
Move to Region2 (w,u) {3, 26}
Move to Region1 (w,c) {2, 28}
Move to Homeland {2, 30}

Notes: Any notes on the move

The (w,c) after the Region name is the terrain and control status of the region.

Non-player nations

Some non-player nations will already have a level of influence (or resentment) against other nations. This is listed below in the newsfax. If anyone manages to increase their influence in a NPN to 10 (or above) then things will really begin to get interesting.

NPNs will surrender if their Bellicosity drops to zero. When this happens a player can do one of two things; he or she can accept the surrender, taking tribute and/or land, or the player can refuse to accept it and just keep what land they’ve managed to conquer, possibly eliminating the NPN.

When a NPN surrenders the victor will receive a base Influence in that nation of 6. For each 20% of the NPN’s national income (before tax, support etc.) taken as tribute the victor will receive a reduction of one Influence level. For each 50 gold of land (as per the free start) taken as tribute the Influence level also reduces by one. Influence cannot be reduced below zero. Land ceded as part of a surrender settlement will undergo a reduction in control level, similar to normal ceding (more on ceding next month) If you look at the new
rule about influencing NPNs you'll see that each one has an Influence Resistance (IRes). I have put this in after each nations status. I really recommend this as a way to stop or slow NPN activity in your nation

Trade with NPNs is pretty much automatic, just allocate your MSPs and the route will most likely be established.

Although active NPNs will definately undertake certain actions during their move, there is a chance that inactive NPNs will also act. This chance is based on their current Activation Level.

The Commonwealth of Iceland
Erik the (not so) Sheepish
STARTS WITH: Iceland
Faroes(f)

The port of Thingvellir was built in Iceland on the North Atlantic. The Faroes were colonised and a port called Thorshavn built.

Erik decided that having children was definitely a VERY important task, much safer, and more enjoyable, than that raiding or exploring thing. The year 1005 saw Erik blessed with two children and two dead wives! The ladies of Thingvellir where beginning to worry that Eric would bestow the honour of marriage on one of them.

Storri supervised the colonisation of the Faroe Isles. The harsh wilderness was tamed but sadly, upon the completion of Thorshavn, Storri died from blood poisoning put down to a particularly poor batch of nails

Lough Neath ran bloody that day when the Ulstermen met the invaders with 1600 cavalry and 2200 infantry. Strength of numbers took the day but not without the forces of Thomond losing 1800 infantry. A mere 800 cavalry retreated to Armagh. Brian then happy with his achievements in the north returned to Munster to sort out his dynasty.

At the end of this his wife said enough was enough and died!After ensuring his line would live on literally forever, Llwelyn set off to join Caledvwlch in persuading the King of Dyffed to join in a united Wales.

Meanwhile, his aide Louise travelled to Orleans to persuade them that Burgundy was the place to be. Cordoba is run by Paul Clark- eenpdjc@elec-eng.leeds.ac.uk

Das Deutches Konigsreich
Otto III, Herzog of Saxony, King of Germany, Holy Roman Emperor
Alsace (fa), Thuringia (fa)

Otto was not impressed. After completing the cultivation of Saxony, and the building of a magnificent city, called Hanover, Otto personally financed cities to be built in Thuringia, Alsace and Lorraine. However, he had little idea that Egmont ‘the Bold’ had decided to expand his tiny kingdom so forcefully. Otto and Cedric travelled through the Rhineland gaining support where they could. Thuringia and the city Leipzig as well as Alsace and the Rhine port of Stuttgart, pledged military support against the Frisians. However, Lorraine and the port of Frankfurt was lost.

The Lombard Kingdom of Italy
Arduin of Ivrea, King of the Lombards
Savoy (f), Verona/Venice (p/p)

Arduin was determined to control the rich and abundant lands of Savoy. Many hours he spent entertaining the old Duke and finally, on his death bed, the old man bequeathed his lands into the Lombards keeping. To celebrate this event a new city called Cavalleri was built there. This coincided with the building of Arduin’s home city of Vincencia in Lombardy.

Massing an army of 8000 foot soldiers, Arduin and his friend and ally Moretti set about the destruction of Venetian power. The Doge had wind of this invasion and was busily ordering that the defences of Verona be strengthened. His aide Culleti, hurried back from diplomatic negotiations with the ruler of Romagna to be by his side.

The Venicians had little idea of the strength of the invaders army and their small force of 600 infantry, 800 cavalry and a few border forts couldn’t withstand the onslaught and all but 200 cavalry were wiped out. The Lombards, losing 1600 infantry, harried Guilando and the remnants of his army to the gates of Venice.

Only history will tell if Arduin was wise to besiege the walls of Venice. However successful the siege might have been, leading to the fall of Venice and the capture of its Doge, the Lombard dead and dying were to number nearly 3600.

Isralo, Prince of Salerno
Apullia (ea), Calabria (ea), Spoleto (t), Sicily/Palermo (p/pt), Corsica (c), Sardinia (c)

The south of Italy hadn’t seen so much activity since the days of glorious Rome. Apullia, Calabria and Spoleto pledged their support (in gold anyway) to the Principality. A new port called Calania was built facing the Ionian sea in Calabria to aid negotiations.

Trade routes to Fatamids, Buwayids and Zirids, as well as Lombardy and Venice. Sicily was Israldo’s desire and so Marco set off to lead a force of 4000 infantry to forcefully bring the Sicilians into the fold. 1400 Salerno infantry died that day, but this was not their greatest loss. Trusted Marco was mortally wounded in the first engagement, and although overseeing the final conquest of the island, died of his wounds in 1005.

Israldo travelled to Corsica and Sardinia and managed to gain a grudging acknowledgement of Salerno’s claim to these islands, despite their fierce independence.

The Papal States
Sylvester II, Pope of the Roman Catholic Church
Campania (ca), Venice (ab)

Could this be a resurgence of the Roman Catholic faith? Sylvester called upon the people of Campania to aid his work and a mighty cathedral was raised to honour God. Sylvester a Bishop Leonardo then travelled to Genoa and Venice to establish a presence of the divine. Amid the ruins and dead of Venice’s outer walls, the local laymen and women were only to happy to help build an abbey. Sylvester wished the same could be said of Genoa. Entrusting funds for a new abbey with a firm of local builders, Leonardo was horrified to discover they had done little but start work and then leave, saying that they had another job to go to....

Leonardo made another wrong decision when he accosted a band of rowdy Lombards harassing a local girl. Leonardo was fatally stabbed just outside the abbey grounds..... a new martyr for a new millennium?

Realising that Sicily had fallen to the Principality of Salerno, Nusir cursed the Italian again as his hopes of an alliance had come to nothing. Nusir felt that Allah had forsaken him when the fleet carrying his gold was lost on the voyage home.

Al-Hakim the Mad, Commander of the Faithful, Mahdi Saviour of Dar al Islam, Caliph in Cairo
Faiyum (f), Sinai (nt), Thebes (fa)

Al-Hakim wanted land and when the Caliph of Qaira wants something people get worried. Luckily Al-Hakim was happy to let others do the mundane work while he settled down to more important statecraft....needless to say his wives blessed him with three healthy children, although one wife did die of boredom after he decoded to keep the same order each time he vistied the hareem (whether she was first or last, nobody knows). Al-Hakim did find time to tally the worth and number of his subjects, the comprehensive census ever seen in Egypt.

El Hahdi travelled to Thebes where he was honoured to accept the fealty of their ruler in a military alliance. The port of Memphis was built in Faiyum as well the ports of Al'Qairah in Mansura and Mt. Sinai in Sinai. The latter facing the Red Sea.

He then travelled to Abadan and gained acknowledgement of his sovereignty.

Firuz, finishing his work on detailing the worth and number of the Emirates, set about forming defensive positions against any possible invasion. Luckily, these defensives held off separate raids by both the Shaddadis and the Ziyarids. Abadan, Mosul and Hahmar weren’t so lucky.
