Azuchi Nisei Shogunate ( Zhai in Tinglit  )

(Shinto Renaissance Open Empire)
Azuchi Kuma, Shogun of the Azuchi, Lord of the North, Protector of the Emperor of All Japan
Diplomacy: none

Missionaries in Eyak were able to spread the teachings of Shintoism to a limited number of the locals. The Shogun and his Lords escorted a large caravan of scribes, clerks, and other grey haired learned men in the long trek from New Yedo to Zhai. The Shogun had decided that the Capital had to be in a more central location to his vast northern holdings. A wise move.

Gempei Nisei Shogunate (Cloque in Yanktonai )

Tokugawa Nisei Shogunate ( Kanazawa in Lemhi )

(Shinto Renaissance Open Empire)
Ietsuna, Shogun of the Tokugawa, Lord of the Middle Lands, Protector of the Emperor of All Japan
Diplomacy: Gempei Nation (ne), Crow (fa), Teton (ea), Yanktonai (f)

The Awakening Shogunate focused on a bevy of economic issues at home. Improvements in irrigation, road repair, drainage, etc were carried out in various regions and cultivation projects began in several more. The Shogun sent his very talented diplomatic envoys east. They made stops in Crow, Teton and Yanktonai (all with good results) before pressing on to Cloque and a meeting with the Gempei Shogun. The talks were very formal and Gempei Hoji showed the utmost respect for the Nisei ambassadors, but politely declined the offer but maintained he would still happily honor the alliance the two nations have.

High Kingdom of Colorado ( Sancta Fiera in Tiwa )

(Roman Catholic Renaissance Open Empire)
Rudolf, King of the Ute, High King of Colorado
Diplomacy: Pawnee (ea), Ciboney (f)

Out on the plains King Morgan marched about Kansa preaching the Gospel. Shawnee missionaries poured across the border as well. King Morgan became ill as he preached though and soon he passed away. Yet the Gospel grew, in fact a outright flame of zeal for Christianity spread through Pawnee and Ponca (where a majority converted) and in Quapaw (where the conversion was TOTAL). People began to call it a great awakening in the spirit. And the King was called a Martyr "for the Lord took him as a token of faith" the Indians would say. The new converts held the King in high regards as a Holy man. Not all missionary work was successful however. In Fushige Baron Jackson continued to try and persuade the nobility to adopt Catholicism. Almost a quarter of the nobles already were Catholics but then one day a group of Shinto missionaries arrived from the Nisei lands. Their zeal and the rigid way they made it a point of honor quickly left Baron Jackson's words to fall on deaf ears. Not only did the Baron not gain any new adherents but there was a complete revision by all the nobles to Shintoism.

Shawnee Empire (Adena in Erie)

(Roman Catholic Renaissance Open Empire)
Kasar, King of the Shawnee, Emperor of the Iroquois
Diplomacy: Ottawa (+6yfc), Arkham (+1yfc), Croix (f), Illinois (ea)

Prince Kassarim traveled to Croix and took for himself a princess to cement the final bonds of unity with the Shawnee. Military advisors (of several types) were sent  to the Coloradoans to train their military. Shawnee Priests were also sent out onto the plains on the opposite banks of the Great Snake. Their zealous preaching proved remarkable and a massive change of hearts took place and a great conversion took place.

Aztec Empire of Mexico  ( Sion in Huave )

Trakonel, Emperor of Mexico, Warrior of Christ, Protector of the Faith, Smiter of Infidel, Conqueror of the Incans, Rex Britannicus, Grandan's Worst Nightmare

(Roman Catholic Renaissance Open Empire)

The border with the New French continued to be adjusted as the King ordered Parana turned back over. Other than that life was quiet.

Diplomacy: Quillaca (+6yfc), Nazca (-3yfc), Chavin (+11yfc), Uru (+5yfc)

The Incans continued to try and soothe their conquered regions with honeyed words. It generally went well. Except for in Nazca. There the two princes, Maita and Huayna, insulted the daughter of the local magistrate by comparing her nose with that of a mule's. Before King Kaine could chastise his sons he fell from his horse while riding one afternoon and broke his neck. His eldest son, Manco, took the throne without challenge.

Kingdom of Spain (Lisbon in Portugal )

(Roman Catholic Renaissance Open Empire)
Lucien Cortez, King of Spain and Occitania, Duke of Catalonia
Diplomacy:  Limousin (a)

The Spanish Heir Diego was hunting near Barcelona when a group of men attacked his hunting party. In the resulting melee the Prince was killed, as were several of the huntsmen, before the attackers were driven off. Two prisoners were taken however. Under torture the men revealed that they had been sent by Lothair of Burgundy. It was therefore with shock that the Spanish watched as Lothair (and Burgundy) swore allegiance to Denmark. Clearly an attempt to escape Spanish justice King Lucien's advisors whispered to him.

The Danish Empire (Venice in Verona)

(Hussite Christian Church Renaissance Open Empire)
Basil, King of the Greeks, Emperor of the Danes, Protector of Italy, Mjolnir-na-Midgaard, Rex Germanicus, Pendragon of the Isles
Diplomacy: Burgundy (unified), Nikolayev (+4yfc), Thuringia (ne)

While the Danish fleet was busy off in the far east (see JUDAH) at home the Emperor was busy. Basil had been fearing for his Burgundian allies for a few years now. Ever since Papal agents had been meddling in Burgundian affairs. Duke Lothair of Burgundy was just a boy, barely able to grow a beard. Yet he received the envoys from Denmark with regal ceremony and the proper pomposity. Talks progressed well and the Duke was predisposed toward the arrangement the Emperor had worked out. The Duchy would become part of the Empire. The Duke's sister, a lass of 15 in 1689 would marry Prince Romanus II, the heir of the Empire who is five years her senior. Duke Lothair will retain his title of Duke and be a active Lord in the Denmark aristocracy, as will his brother Karl. With the proper signatures and seals attached to the treaty, and the marriage conducted Burgundy became a vassal of the Empire.

In a secure vault in Venice, dark men sneak about...did I say secure? I meant formerly secure. The masked men have come to pilfer the Danish treasury only to find that its empty. Whispered curses and the men take the hand full of ducats they find and then sneak into the night.....

The Albanian East India Company (Venice in Verona)

(Hussite Christian Church Renaissance Open Empire)
Albrecht Argir
Diplomacy: Morea (a), Archolon (ea), Heraklion (ma), Alexandria (ma), Benghazi (ma)

The gifts from the various Hussite powers was put to good use. Ships were built to carry trade and in Venice factories and work yards were erected to handle the planned commerce of the company. Josef Kuklone was sent to establish agents in several cities. Meanwhile Albrecht visited the company's holdings in Morea and tried to bring about closer ties. Morea agreed to an alliance, and in Archolon an economic treaty was signed. Part of the deal involved Albrecht marrying a Greek princess, daughter of the city magistrate.

United Kingdoms of Britain (London in Sussex )

(Roman Catholic Renaissance Open Empire)
Brian Cromwell, King of England, Scotland, Wales and the Out Isles
Diplomacy: Strathclyde (f), Poitou (nt), Calusa (colonized 0/4)

The British embassy to Poitou was able to send word back to the King that a tentative agreement had been reached with the local Baron. But word was also sent of the unsettling absorption of Burgundy into the Danish Empire. Across the Atlantic English ambitions were going to again bump up with Danish ambitions. English colonist moved slowly into Calusa, and in small numbers. The colonist did not cover much of the land and you could go miles and miles between settlements at times, though in other places they were more clumped together. The Danes, having arrived off of Calusa's coast thought the land was unoccupied and so landed their colonist and established a city which they called Miami. The English and Danes both claimed to have arrived first in the previously unoccupied land.

Negotiations with Denmark continued to be fruitful and the Danes transferred control of Bosnia and Croatia. In India the nation's priests worked hard to spread the Gospel in Nasik and Kalyani, and converts were had in both areas. Diplomatic talks on the sub continent were cut short though when Heinrich Stephanopolis fell ill and died. Then there was the dispute over Bithnia (see Georgia)

Lord Farrukh was sent to talk with the city fathers of Tanjore but after only a few weeks of being their Farrukh became ill and died, ending his mission with little accomplished. In Vengi and Madurai large numbers of Arab colonist disembarked. The best lands were of coarse given to the Arabs. These colonial lands became friendly to the Emir. Zulu Natal ( Tsulu in Mapungubwe )

(Roman Catholic Renaissance Open Empire)
Pafgut, King of the Zulus and Kaffiria
Diplomacy:

The Spring months would bring tragedy to the Zulu. Assassins crept into the King's quarters and killed him in his sleep. Other assassins made a similar attempt on the heirs life, the heir survived the attack though he was grievously wounded. Yet the greatest dangers still lay ahead. Agitators in the army began to stir and the ethnic (tribal) tensions in the Zulu realm began to come to the front. A ex politician named Pafku was able to gather the loyalty of the army in Matapos. The wounded heir was killed by the rebel leader and his loyal followers. It soon became clear that the rebels were sympathetic to the Afriqans as they sided with them when the Afriqan army marched into Matapos. In Tashka the death of the King and heir set of a revolt. A lower level officer took the initiative and won over loyalty of the army. Pafgut was his name, and he marched his men on the capital of Tsulu. As Pafgut moved to secure his rule in the north the Afriqans liberated Hwange and then took Matapos and Matable (and their undefended cities) and then went on the defensive. But Pafgut was in no position to counter attack. So he secured his throne and planned for the future.

The King's generals had thought they had heard rumors that Macedon was now in possession of Bithnia...but no matter. The King would get his way. At the head of 14,000 elite troops the Georgians rampaged into Bithnia. And yes, they did run into a Macedonian army. A army of 15,400 that reacted to meet the invaders. the Macedonian response was disjointed do to suprise however and the Georgian elite troops smashed the hastily formed Macedonian units. The battle quickly turned into a route and over 10,000 Macedonians would lose their lives. The Georgians lost a mere 1,200 men.

The Persian economy continued to grow in leaps and bounds. In large part this was do to the efforts of the Shah to increase his city size and harbor capacities. He also encouraged internal trade. Gold was shipped to various allies and of course to the Trankebar Traders. The King efforts in Kash were hindered somewhat when the lead diplomat died. But Prince Cyrus was able to take over and achieve some positive things. In Hazarajat the Shah's diplomats charmed the hell out of the locals who gladly joined fully with the Empire.

While steady conversions were being made into the Shi'a population of Vatsa, it was still necessary to keep a strong garrison on hand. For some reason the Maharajah forgot this in Gaur. The region had recently seen a new city built, Rajshahi, but there was no Danrajastahni garrison to control the conquered region. Hussite though they may be they were still unhappy about being conquered. Revolt soon broke out and guerillas drove out and of the Maharajah's administrators who were foolish enough to try and remain. Diplomacy:  Surin (p), Khemer (p)

The war in Southeast Asia heated up...

1687:
Spring: Two armies, one in Preikuk and the other in Cochin launched invasions into Khemer. Progress was slowed by having to build pontoons across the Mekong River. A Judean fleet put to sea and was prowling around the Mekong Sea waiting for any Khemer ships to come down the river and put to sea to make good on their threat to raid shipping, but none ever came. Other Judean ships heading north back to Judah to get reinforcements. A Ming army began crossing into Laos.

Summer: Prince Ramavasi of Khemer moves to meet the invaders. The Prince has the advantage in that he has aerial scouts in the form of a couple of scout zeppelins, and the Judeans neither have zeppelins or guns to shoot them down. Using this advantage the Khemer army hits the Judean army on the march in mid June. 42,000 Judeans are hit by the 30,000 Khemer. The outnumbered Khemer fight with ferocious determination and use their position to hammer the Judean columns. The Judean General Li-Tui is wounded early in the battle. As the Judean's continue to be pounded their lines began to come apart in disorder. General Chon Bei is killed trying to rally the men. The Judean army panics and bolts the field in disorder. The hot Khemer pursuit chases the Judeans back across the Mekong into Preikuk. The Judeans lost 12,000 dead to the Khemer 6,400. In late June, with the Judean navy still prowling in the Mekong Sea, a Danish flett arrives and attacks the Judean fleet. The Judeans have 232 warships, but the Danes have 500 warships and 4,000 marines. A truly lopsided battle takes place. The Judean fleet is smashed. They lose 154 ships to the Danes 36ships and 200marines. The Judean fleet puts into Hue. The Judean army in Preikuk begins to regroup and plan. The Ming army in Laos (not conquering, just marching through) begins to feel a supply pinch as it begins to cross into Lampung. The Khemer army of Ramavasi begins to react upon news of the northern invasion of Lampung.

Fall: The Khemer army marches through Siam in September and arrives in Lampung in October. The Ming army had already gone into winter quarters when the Khemer show up. Hastily mustering out the Ming and Khemer square off. The Ming army is 24,800 stong, the Khemer have 23,400. Ramavasi, who is a brilliant commander, takes advantage of a superb battle plan and better scouting (and Ming lack of supplies) to smash the Ming army into retreat. The Ming run for their lives, half starved back into Laos (and eventual Annam) they leave 8,200 dead on the field, the Khemer lose 3,000. The Khemer go into winter quarters. The Danish fleet arrives in the Gulf of Tonkin and begins to patrol looking for Judean shipping (npt merchant shipping, but transports that might be bringing reinforcements. Eventually they will turn back a Judean convoy that is indeed trying to bring reinforcements south. Denying the Judeans those badly needed men and zeppelins. The Judean army in Preikuk, having regrouped, marched northwest in Surin (no more damn river crossings!) Li-Tui informs his men "We'll swing north, then south to avoid having to cross the Mekong in the face of the enemy again."

1688:
Spring: Once more the Khemer army reacts, this time into Siam in March, then into Surin in April. They run into their old friends from Judea who were mopping up. Judah could put 36,000 men into the field, Khemer was down to just over 20,000. The Judean attack began early in the morning. Cannon and musket fire belched a blinding smoke up and down both lines. Over head the two Khemer scout zeppelins dropped bombs (doing little damage) on the Judean artillery line. Neither side could get the advantage and the bodies began to pile up. On the right of the Khemer line General Vam Dai is wounded and orders his men to fall back. Prince Ramavasi seeing his right fall back rushes to the spot to try and stop the retreat. The Judeans push hard, seeing the enemy about to give. The Khemer line breaks and it looks as if disaster has come to the Khemer. Yet Ramavasi with a group of reinforcements charges into the gap and in a bloody melee the Prince is able to personally hold the line as it rerforms. The Khemer had taken horrible casualties, but have held. The two sides separate as the days battle is a draw. Judah lost 4,400 men (General Bai Jao was wounded), Khemer 8,800 men in their near disaster. The second day of battle dawns with a charge by the Khemer. Desperate to try and break the Judean lines Prince Ramavasi knows his men's morale is low, he must win early. The charge takes the Judeans by surprise, they had thought they had the initiative. The Judeans fight hard, but began to lose heart in the face of the viscious Khemer attack. Late morning sees Judean units begining to run and soon the whole Judean army is in retreat. A chant of "RAMAVASI ....RAMAVASI...RAMAVASI" goes up as his men, who believe their Prince is invincible call out his name. Sadly only 7,000 Khemer yet live. Losses for the day, Khemer 4,600, Judah 6,400 and the death of their General Li-Tui.

Summer: Even though the Khemer held Surin they decide to march into Khemer. With so few men left Ramavasi wants the advantage of the homeland for the next battle. For he has no doubt there will be another one. The Judeans regroup and plan.

Fall: The Judeans march back into Surin. The Khemer army being to small does not march north to contest the conquest.

1689:
Spring: The Judeans finish pacifying Surin, and in May cross the border into Khemer proper.

Summer: In July the two sides meet yet again. The Judeans can still put 25,400 men into the field. Ramavasi has only 7,200 men left, nor does Khemer have any fortifications to rely upon. Ramavasi never the less attempts to hold. The battle quickly becomes uneven as the Judean numbers just overwhelm the Khemer lines. A slaughter takes place. Ramavasi and a bare 1,000 men are all that is able to retreat into Angkor Wat. The Judeans lose only 1,200 men in this last battle.

Fall: Judah finishes mopping up Khemer.

The Japanese were not done in the south pacific. More conquests were on the agenda. In fact overwhelmging force was gathered and set say for Golan, the capital of Timor. Flying out of the clouds one summer day, Prince Kairyu at the command of 80 scout zeppelins descends upon Golan. Several timorese zeppelins rose to meet them, 8 all told, though 2 were larger than the scout zeppelins. The short aerial duel saw all 8 Timorese zeppelins go down in flames, the Japanese lost 2. With the air clear the navy moved in. Eight hundred war ships of the Imperial Japanese Navy smashed the harbor of Golan. With the King dead from a Japanese assassin, the Heir (new King) took the fleet out to fight. One hundred and forty warships and 7,000 marines did their best but were no match. Almost all the Timorese fleet was sunk or captured. The city of Golan itself was lightly defended. Timor had relied on its navy to keep invaders at bay. The new King, who miraculously survived the battle, was able to escape with his hand full of survivors and fled the island. The city and island fall to Japan.

Japanese diplomatic efforts in Papua were slightly diminished due to a Naipon Seahold delegation in the region, but it was nothing that couldn't be over come.

Missionary work in Hokitika was paying off nicely as the majority of the region had now turned to Buddhism and left their Oroist ways. This made the King very happy on his trip to Akaroa. Yet his negotiations in Akaroa proved futile and actually slightly angered the conquered inhabitants. In Papua the Naipon hold over that region was lost due to bungling Diplomacy on their part, and then the arrival of a Japanese envoy who proved most capable.
