Diplomacy: Pelibar (ne), Croix (a)
After their victory over the Huron it seems the gremlins of fate are back on
the Shawnee. The plan was to hit the former Huron lands from the north and
south. In the North the Shawnee army was simply to small and after a hard fight
it was repulsed and forced back into Ottawa. In the South the army was plenty
large, and certainly capable of the task. However General Shai, who was 61,
keeled over from a stroke in spring of 1684 and the Shawnee King, in his wisdom,
did not see fit to have a second in command for the old general. Ah, but on the
bright side, Croix agreed to an alliance.

Lucien Cortez, King of Spain and Occitania, Duke of Catalonia
Diplomacy: Limousin (t)
North Eastern Spain, specifically Aragon and Catalonia, received a influx of funds from the royal treasury. These were used as subsidies and for improvements to the local infrastructure to attract business and trade. The population in the areas began to grow as a result. King Lucien decided that if his tax collectors had a more accurate idea of the actual wealth and population in his realm then there would be far less chance for people to skim on their taxes. So he ordered a census taken. The King's agents moved through the land counting parcels of land, sheep, cattle, trade ships, everything of value in effect. As a result new tax rolls began to be drawn up and new tax rates assessed...yes, to the joy of the people. North of the Pyrenees Prince Jorge and Lord Alamaza visited the Baron of Limousin. Their talks were cordial and after a while the Baron realized it would be in his best interest to pay tribute to the Spanish in return for protection.

Ctsuwayo, King of the Zulus and Kaffiria
Diplomacy: Hwange (p), Banhine (p), Tashka (p)
1684: In march a army commanded by King Ctsuwayo crossed into Hwange. A second army began marching north from Vaal. As the Zulu army marched deeper into Hwange the Afriqans sent General Paglen with 6,800 men to drive the invaders out. It took Paglen and his men two months to march to Hwange but they arrived in the first week of June. The Zulu's were just finishing mopping up their conquest and turned on the Afriqan reinforcements. The Zulu had 18,000 men (including 4,000 cavalry) to attack the small Afriqan force. The Afriqans put up a stubborn defense, but the numbers were against them and they were forced to flee leaving 3,000 dead, 2,200 Zulu would never march again. The fight in Hwange was over, but in Rozwi it was heating up. The Second Zulu army had crossed the border in mid May and the Afriqans had taken up defensive positions along a series of redoubts and earthen works that guarded the approach to the capital. The Zulu could only bring 13400 men into the attack and the earthen works were held by 18,000 Afriqans. King Nefuren himself stood under the Afriqan banner on the center most redoubt. The initial Zulu attack went well at first. They made steady progress as they attacked the defensive works. Soon they began to falter and a retreat was ordered. King Nefuren seeing the Zulu fall back ordered a counter attack. Down from the redoubts the Afriqans poured with a blood thirsty howl as they ran in a fury at the Zulu. But the Zulu were not running, they turned and formed their ranks and let loose a volley of musket right into the face of the rushing Afriqans. It had been a trap, a feigned withdrawal to draw them out of their prepared defenses! The mad dash of the Afriqans had thrown their units into a bit of disorder, but the point blank volley completed that disruption. The Afriqan line crumpled and soon was in retreat back into their earthen works. However the Zulu were now hot on their heels. A top redoubts and in the trenches the Afriqans tried to hold their ground but their morale was broken. King Nefuren himself was cut down under his banner. His men ran for their lives into walled city of Zimbabwe, they must hold the capital! The Afriqans left 5,600 dead in the earthen works, including their King. The Zulu had lost 2,200. As the Zulu began to dig siege lines, content to starve the defenders out, the Afriqan leader ship rushed to the Zimbabwe university. Young Prince Zimont was pulled out of school and placed on his father's throne as the new King. The Zulu in Hwange were on the march, but not deeper into Afriqan lands, no they had marched southeast along the road and by August had started to cross into Banhine. They soon went into winter quarters. General Paglen, after reorganizing his survivors in Kariba marched northeast after hearing about the disaster in Rozwi and ended the year in Kafue.
1685: In Banhine the Zulu continued to occupy the undefended region and in May they took the undefended (no walls) city of Tashka. The Zulu King's campaign ended there as he sat upon his conquests and waited for word from the north. General Paglen and his Afriqans had crossed into Rozwi in March and on April 7th this small force fell upon the eastern siege works of the Zulu in the dawn hour. The Zulu defenders had the sun in their eyes as they tried to fight off this attack. Surprise was total. Paglen had a small command however and if the city defenders didn't sortie he would be in trouble. But luck was with him because the defenders in the city quickly realized that someone was trying to help them and they sortied out to help. Prince Tesi, the Zulu Heir, was wounded in this fighting and the Zulu quickly routed as they realized they were in a position that was hopeless. They left nearly 6,000 dead, the Afriqans had lost a mere 1,000. Fine payback for the loss of their King last year. The Zulu retreated south into Matopos and licked their wounds. The Afriqans held their ground in Rozwi and prepared for the future.
1686: neither side made any moves to attack the other.

Prince Za'an lead a group of 5,000 men into Lob Nor to avenge the insult directed against his father the previous year. The Prince's men swooped down on the desert nomads and scattered them to the winds. Yurts were burnt, women raped, their men slain. The Prince felt the insult was finally revenged and he forced tribute on the surviving tribes.
The Celestial Emperor cast his eye to the maps in the Palace and his gaze fell upon southeast Asia and the lands of the Khemer...
1684: A Judan fleet gathered in an army and departed and sailed south. But months on the journey (after a few months of travel and loading time) meant that the navy arrived off the coast of Cochin at years end.
While the navy prepared and made its way south General Li-Tui had a good sized Judean army in Irem. The General marched into Champa and began the conquest of the rich region. The Khemer were not slow (well not to slow anyway) to react and by mid summer the Khemer Heir lead his nations army into Champa. On July 2nd near a small village called Phat Yun the two armies clashed. The Khemer had 31,600 men and a couple of scout zeppelins circling over head to relay the Judean movements. The Judean army was only 13,000 strong. The Judean army was entirely elite, though it was outnumbered, and it put up a ferocious fight. In the end however as dusk was coming the Judeans retreated in good order back into the city of Irem. They left 4,600 Judean dead at Phat Yun, the Khemer left 4,800. The Khemer had no intention of putting Irem under siege and so both sides remained in place for the rest of the year. The Khemer were un awhere that Judean reinforcements would arrive off the coast by years end.
1685: In the spring a large Judean army began landing in Cochin. The Khemer received word and began to march south. They were hesitant at first, knowing that the penned in army in Irem would march forth upon Champa once they left. But they needed to repel this new invasion force so into Cochin they marched. The two sides met in battle in the first week of May. The Khemer had 27,000 men against about 22,000 Judeans. In a fierce fight the Judeans got the better of the Khemer and force them to break just after noon. The Khemer left 6,400 dead on the field, the Judeans left 5,000. The Khemer did not wish to retreat in disorder into the second Judean army (now taking Champa by storm) so it crossed the Mekong into Khemer proper. The Judeans finished consolidating Cochin and then the small un defended city of Hue was taken. In Champa the conquest was also completed and then the army split into two smaller armies. One began to cross into Mison, the other into Preikuk.
1686: Mison and Preikuk were finished being conquered, then all forces hold in place for the remainder of the year.

In the south seas the Japanese Imperial ambitions continued as the Sarawak nation continued to be gobbled up. Sarawak's important outlying holdings had mostly fallen already, and Java was finishing them up, so Japan struct at the heart. Off the coast of Huangor the Japanese navy met the much smaller Sarawak navy. In a lopsided affair the Sarawak navy was smashed with only a hand full of Japanese losses.
