Tokugawa Nisei Shogunate

(Shinto Renaissance Open Empire)
Ietsuna, Shogun of the Tokugawa, Lord of the Middle Lands, Protector of the Emperor of All Japan
Diplomacy: Sawtai (nt)

The Shogun sent Lord Guyuken to negotiate with the rebellious province of Sawtai in a attempt to open the east west road. Lord Guyuken was able to just barely accomplish this before he passed away from a winter illness in 1676.

(GM NOTE: On the war in Alaska, I was quite disappointed, I thought there was going to be a huge struggle up there, but I did not realize -I need to pay attention better I guess- how weak the Tatar were, needless to say they collapsed like a rotten tomato with no battles fought of any significance. So bummed out in fact that I wont even write up a decent report. The Azuchi and Tokugawa just walked in and occupied their heartlands. Having mass conscripted the turn before the Tatar were unable to raise a army to resist.)

High Kingdom of Colorado ( Sancta Fiera in Tiwa )

(Roman Catholic Renaissance Open Empire)
Morgan, King of the Ute, High King of Colorado
Diplomacy: Ciguayo (f), Kasar (f), Taino (f), Kusan (f), Ogala (p), Dakota (p), Igashi (p), Missouri (p), Fushige (p), Caddo (pt), Natchez (pt), Onate (pt), Kansa (pt), Onora (pt)

Morgan and his council read the reports from the Great Northern war. If he would ever have his chance to take hold of the lands between the mountains and the Great Snake it would be now. The main force would be a push up the west bank of the Great Snake, a second column, commanded by the King himself, would cross the great plains of prairie grass to strike at the Hideyoshi Capital. Admiral O'Donohugh, commanding 70 light warships, swept up the Great Snake looking for Hideyoshi naval activity. At the same time General O'Gaer, with 25,000 men, began a crossing of the Arkansas River into Caddo. Word spread of the invasion. The only troops the Hideyoshi had within thousands of miles was the Pawnee allied troops, word was sent to them to hurry! The Hideyoshi navy was at anchor in the north in Cloque. It sortied down the Great Snake and ran into Admiral O'Donohugh a few miles north of Fushige. The Coloradoans had numbers on their side, but the Hideyoshi were far better sailors and had a bit better leadership. The Coloradoans were getting the worst of the battle, and probably would have lost, when fate helped them and the Hideyoshi Admiral was killed. His demoralized fleet withdrew in good order back to Cloque. With the way clear now Baron Jackson began landing his 4,000 marines in Missouri. The Region was pacified, and the walled city of Fushige put under passive siege now that it could be blockaded by river. In Caddo General O'Gaer had completed his crossing and was subduing the land when 4,000 Pawnee showed up to Challenge his invasion. Badly outnumbered (6-1) and then trapped by a brilliant battle plan by the Coloradoans, the Pawnee were obliterated in a single hour. It was less a battle then a massacre. By years end the undefended city of Natchez was also in the Coloradoans hands. 1676 began with the King's column finally emerging from the sea of prairie grass to fall upon the undefended region of Ogata. He would spend most of the spring and summer bringing it under control. In the fall he started to cross into Dakota, the Hideyoshi homeland. In Missouri the besieged city of Fushige held out for many months, but finally surrendered in September. General O'Gaer marched into Onate and then Kansa. Both were firmly in Coloradoan hands by years end. In 1677 the fighting along the Great Snake died down. Baron Jackson and his men remained in Fushige, General O'Gaer and his men took the undefended port of Onora in Kansa and then rested there. The only fighting left was in Dakota where the King finished pacifying the land then moved on the Capital of Igashi. Admiral O'Donohugh's fleet moved up the Missouri River to blockade the capital but arrived to find it was unnecessary. The City was unwalled and had no garrison. The King marched in unopposed, some minor skirmishes but thats it. The Hideyoshi Shogun, really just a boy, was killed trying to flee the city. No Hideyoshi royal remained alive. The Hideyoshi realm convulsed in panic and despair. Only one leader emerged alive, Gempei Yoritomo. He fled to Cloque, last city of the realm in free hands.

Shawnee Empire (Adena in Erie)

(Roman Catholic Renaissance Open Empire)
Travois, King of the Shawnee, Emperor of the Iroquois
Diplomacy: none

King Travois was concerned with domestic issues and pretty much neglected prosecution of the war with the Huron. The Shawnee had beat up the Huron as of late and Travois must have thought they were down for the count. He sent a group of assassins off to North Bay to add to the Huron misery. But the Huron prince BrightSpear was a young man of great heart and he refused to lose heart. He gathered up a meager band of 3,000 cavalry and crossed into Saginaw. He quickly squashed the Shawnee garrison and liberated the region. He thought of crossing into Erie, but his scouts reported a larger Shawnee army. He settled down to see if the Shawnee would come calling to push him out. Sure enough General Shai and 4,000 cavalry came to do just that. Unfortunately for Shai the young BrightSpear was a outstanding leader and executed a flawless battle plan that soon had the Shawnee routing in panic and leaving almost half their army as dead in the fields of Saginaw. Shai's troops limped back into Erie to seek council with the King.

Aztec Empire of Mexico  ( Sion in Huave )

(Aztec Christian Church Renaissance Open Empire)
Horukel, Emperor of Mexico, Warrior of Christ, Protector of the Faith, Smiter of Infidel, Conqueror of the Incans, Rex Britannicus, Grandan's Worst Nightmare
Diplomacy: Nahuatl (ne), Cuna (p), Cora (hs)

The Earthquake legion left the cold north. Their destination was the warm ports and warm women of the south...home. Prince Trakonel came with them. His duties were not over however, he was sent into Nahuatl to try and persuade the locals of the wisdom in joining with the Empire. No luck, his best efforts were spurned. His efforts proved to be better than those in Cora, where the Aztec diplomat died of heart failure, but not before he had thoroughly pissed off the locals. Yet the Aztecs would not only trust to words, the Emperor was not called "smiter of infidels" for no reason. The Spear of Fire leagion marched from Guyami into Cuna. The local Catholic militia tried to put up a fight, but it was pretty futile. The land was pacified and Catholic churches were turned over to the Aztec clergy. The Roman "Popish" rights were outlawed. Those that resisted met a untimely death.

Teutonic Kingdom New Granada (New Granada in Acroa)

(Roman Catholic Renaissance Open Empire)
Antonio Masa, Grand-Master of the Knights of Saint John, Emperor of Caquetio, Fist of Christ, King of New Granada
Diplomacy: Kayapo (f)

Work on a postal road system that stretched south all the way to the New France border was completed on time and on budget. While King Antonio was forced to stay in the capital and deal with the bureaucrats, Prince Gafard traveled to Kayapo where he married Katherine and secured the unity of Kayapo. In the south east General Angara was given orders to invaded the West Afriqan region of Patasho. This invasion went off without a hitch. Next was to storm the city of Sevilla. The city had a very small wall, not more than a glorified wooden palisade really. So with great confidence General Angara sent his 10,000 men in, parade ground formations, at the walls. Inside the city was the 33rd West Afriqan division, 5,000 strong. The brave New Granadan foot was butchered in their vain attempt to get into the city. For a brief moment it appeared the south gate of the city had fallen and the New Granadan flag had been seen flying over the gate house. Yet that lasted less than 2 minutes then the survivors could take no more carnage and fled leaving almost 9,000 dead on the field, including General Angara. The West Afriqan defenders took about 600 casualties. The survivors fled into neighboring Tupi. Only many months later would the collapse of the West Afriqan nation cause the defenders of the city to declare it a independent city.

(GM Note: If you are going to assault a city its a bad idea to send a leader with a crappy combat stat at a well defended city by a nation with a markedly higher siege QR than you. )

Duchy of the Three Isles (Valetia in Malta)

(Roman Catholic Renaissance Open Empire)
Butai, Emir of Archimedea, Duke of Sicily and Sardinia
Diplomacy: Cyprus (nt)  Grozo (nt)  Semerang (p)

Duke Butai was interested in securing his trade routes to the far east and to stabilize things for the Duchy in the Meditation area. The first involved a military expedition into the Red Sea and then a siege of the Sarawak port of Semerang in Yemen. The walls of the city were not particularly high, but the Duchy did not send a very large force either, and those defenders looked like they knew a tad bit more about siege craft than the Duchy did. So the Duchy navy set up a blockade and the defenders were starved out after a siege of about 8months. In the Med the Duke was able to negotiate a land swap, Morea for Cyprus, with the Macedonians. Just in time to avoid the war there!

Holy Kingdom of Macedon

(Hussite Christian Church Renaissance Open Empire)
Alexandros Vespos, King of Macedonia, Prince of Attica, Emperor of Constantinople, Warden of the East, Spear of God, Overlord of the Wallachs and Hungarians
Diplomacy:

BALKAN WAR

1675: In Kiev the Danish General staff was meeting to go over plans for their line of march. Orders had come through and there was to be war with Macedonia over their aggression against Walachia. As the meeting was wrapping up a bomb detonated (it would later be determined to have been hidden underneath a serving cart sitting in the corner of the room, the bomb being of suspected Swedish design). Several junior officers were immediately killed. General's Kieseritsky and Stamma were both injured. The wounded were tended to and the dead buried. Two days later General Stamma was found dead by a nurse in his quarters. A 'doctor' had administered poison instead of medicine to the wounded General, the doctor could not be found for questioning.

In Alfold Danish agents approached Hozolen with a offer to turn. He refused and reported the matter to his higher ups. But the Danes were not done "if he won't turn willingly, we must stir up his men" They found some disgruntled officers and whispered sweet words of power and offers of help (not telling them they were Danes but instead pretending to be 'patriots' concerned about the course of the nation) They found their man in Alexandros Vespos, a brave warrior who thought the King foolish to risk war with Denmark "Hussites must stick together". Vespos arrested Hozolen and had him executed as a traitor to the people. He then did a quick purge of any officers who he thought might be loyal to the old regime and then began a march south. Through Banat, Bosnia, and into Bulgaria he marched, removing the Macedonian garrisons as he went. Large chunks of land returned to Walachian control. At years end he was on the Bulgarian border preparing to cross into Macedonia.

The Danes did not remain idle either. From Kiev the Danish army pushed south under the command of the wounded (he was transported in a carriage for months until well) Kieseritsky. They pushed through Pechneg and into Moravia, liberating that region for Walachia by years end.

A further Danish army was gathering in Trieste to the west. It was bolstered by a Lybian army that was transported by a Danish/ Lybian fleet. The Lybian and Danish armies wintered in Trieste but were all gathered together and ready come spring.

The Macedonian navy put to sea under Prince Lothar, the Heir.

1676: The Danish army in Moldavia spent a couple of months finishing mopping up then marched into Ialomita and spent the rest of the year there taking their time liberating the region. In the west the Danish/Lybian force invaded Croatia. This region had not been part of Wallachia so no liberation was possible. The second half of the year saw them press into Bosnia, once more this region could not be liberated since it had not been part of Wallachia and so was forced to pay tribute to Denmark.

At sea Prince Lothar of Macedon finally received a dispatch from a currier ship telling him of the rebelling of Alexandros Vespos. He was unsure what to do, not being a great military leader, but the choice was taken from his hands when the a combined Danish/Lybian navy appeared on the horizon. The wind was against him, so he was forced to fight. Outnumbered 4 to 1 the battle went bad from the very beginning. The nations had equal skill in seamanship, but the Danes/Lybians had numbers and much, much better leadership. In the end the Macedonian navy was completely destroyed. Prince Lothar died with his men.

While his son died at sea King Gustav faced his own doom on land. Alexandros Vespos's army arrived in Macedonia. A short battle began for control of the homeland. King Gustav was killed by artillery fairly early in the battle and with the King dead the heart went out of the loyalist. Alexandros secured the homeland and capital and the loyalty of the remaining military forces. With the King and Heir dead, and his children suddenly "missing" no contender to the throne was left to challenge Alexandros's rule.

1677: The Dane/Lybian forces from the west invaded Ludgorie at the same time the Dane force from the north invaded as well. The two forces liberated the region and unified into one fighting force. They spent the second half of the campaign season smashing Bulgaria into submission. The Macedonians waited in Macedon prepared to fight the invaders, but the campaign season ended before the invasion could come.

At home things were much calmer....that is until the city of Dungunab rose in revolt and slaughtered the Lybian garrison. General Akhtar was dispatched from New Oran to bring order back to the tiny city. He arrived and put the boot of Lybia on the rebels in a most firm manner. In no time at all order was restored and a strict curfew imposed.

(Roman Catholic Renaissance Open Empire)
Lloigoitor, Three Smoking Mountain, ne-Axamaloa na-Tochul, King of the Mixtecs, Lord of the Niger, Captain of the Firestorm Banner, True Emperor of the Aztecs, Emperor of Mali, DarkLord of Africa
Diplomacy: Bithnia (p), Lydia (p), Togo (p), Akan (p), Gagnoa (p), Niete (p), De La Roche (p), Susu (p), Marampa (p), Boure (p)

Preparations for war were everywhere in the Empire. The Howler was sent with a brigade of elite marines north to join in the war in the Balkans. At home the King and his generals sent out a muster and raised 11,000 new troops. Two armies were sent out, one to the north and one south along the coast. The Northern force of 16,000+ men met no resistance as it trampled over Susu, Marampa, and Boure. The southern army of King Lloigoitor had 30,000 men and over 50 guns with elite crews. The West Afriqans had few men, less than 10,000, on hand. Their best general was in Afriqa (see New Grenada) and their Admiral Pobo had turned traitor and defected to the Mali Ax with over 270 warships. Things looked dark for West Afriqa. They made their stand in Akan. The Mali Ax armies smashed the hapless West Afriqans even though they fought bravely and refused to run. The wild hills of Akan were littered with their dead. The offensive continued on and in the closing days of November 1677 the capital of De La Roche fell to assault. The guns of the Mali Ax pounded the city walls flat and the city was occupied.

Empire of Afriqa ( Zimbabwe in Rozwi )

Nefuren, Emperor of the Bantu, Lord of Zimbabwe
Diplomacy: Sakalava (hs), Mahabao (c), Merintha (hs)

1675: The Afriqan civil war started off with the assassination of King Ikogen. There were then repeated murders of the states intelligence agents. With in a week of the King's death the Zulu crossed into Matapos. The region and city switched their allegiance (GM Note: civil war rules are still in effect and will be in T175 as well). The new King, Nefuren, considered marching the army south to challenge the Zulu dogs...but reports were the Zulu army was much larger so they dug in around the capital and waited. But the Zulu turned west instead and took control of Matabele and its city. The Zulu then stopped and went on defense. The rest of the year passed in quiet until September when a large Masai army began crossing the border into Luanga, they had barely entered the region when the campaign season ended.

1676: The Masai continued the conquest of Luanga without opposition. A second Masai army crossed into Gorongo in March and spent the rest of the year pacifying that region. The Army in Luanga, its task finished, pushed on into Zambia.

1677: The Masai army in Gorongo marched into Shona and pacified it unopposed. The second army finished the pacification of Zambia. The Afriqans had lost six regions but no major battles had occurred.

Great investments in fortifications were the norm. Quite a few cities had citadels built as the cities were expanded to encompass them. The other great Persia passion was diplomacy, through the use of clever words and sweet promises the Empire was able to bind several regions and cities closer to itself. Danrajastahn (Schwarzcastel in Edrosia)

(Hussite Christian Church Renaissance Open Empire)
Bruz Hapsburg, maharajah of India
Diplomacy: Rajput (p then fa) Kaunaj (p)  Gaur (p)  Palas (f colonized)

The war with the Mughal continued a pace. Prince Gunter marched his army west from Palas. Through the muggy summer days along the Ganges the men marched, but it was important that they reach Rajput quickly. Communications needed to be reestablished with the Capital.  Waiting in Rajput were the Mughal. The sides were about equal but the Danrajastahni had a qualitative edge and more and better artillery.  They were also aided by a small column of men, under the command of Ivar Mortensen marching from Uttar Pradesh in the  west. The Mughal put up a ferocious, but ultimately futile, defense. But the Danrajastahni guns pounded them into pulp, and then their Cavalry cut down the rest. The prince then stormed Kaunaj and met little resistance. The region was then militarily converted. "As they have rebelled against their rightful overlord they have lost all rights to their lands and their religion. Perhaps Jesus will teach them the way of humble obeisance" said Gunter.

While the battle raged in Rajput the Mughal navy, commanded by their heir Sidarman landed a army, commanded by the King, in Palas. The Mughal had disbanded almost half their huge fleet and given the sailors rifles and a brief bit of training to turn them into marines. This army of 12,000 had a large artillery section as it engaged the Rajah of Jats, who had been surprised by the landing while enslaving the local Shi'a populace. The sides were about even, and for once the Mughal had the advantage in artillery. But the qualitative advantage of the troops, and the large cavalry arm of the Hussites, resulted in a stalemate on day one of the battle. The infantry of the Mughal took 3400 casualties and they lost a 1/3 of their artillery as well as the loss of Lord Vraha, the King's able second in command. The Hussites lost 1800 men. Day two once more resulted in a stalemate as the Mughal lost a further 3,000 men and half their remaining artillery. The Hussite lost 1400 men, and nearly the battle when the Rajah of Jats was wounded. But the brave general refused to be taken from the field and had his wound dressed while bravely standing near the firing line of his men. Day three would prove to be the last. The bloody Mughal could no longer stand up under their repeated cavalry charges of the Hussite and their army collapsed and routed back to the shore to board their navy. King Sdara perished with most of his men, only 1200 Mughal marines would escape. The Hussites lost 800 men on the final day of fighting.

With the Mughal invasion repelled the Rajah of Jats got back to his unpleasant task. He Forced all the Muslims in Palas to abandon their homes and he marched them east across the border, those that tried to turn back were shot. Danrajastahni colonist then were settled in the land. With that task complete he marched north into Gaur and easily subdued the land. Worship of Islam was outlawed and the Hussite faith declared the only legal religion.

All Danrajastahni religious activities were not as ruthless. In Gujerat Jakob Schiller tried to use reasoning to convince the Shi'a ruling class to adopt the Church of Hus. He was quickly stoned and beaten to death.

Kolos, Prince of Golan, King of Timor, Scourge of the Seas
Diplomacy: none

Timorese focus was on putting their financial house in order. Cash shortages meant the training budget for the military suffered. The troops themselves were still paid, with the lack of training and gold on hand the bars and brothels in Golan were very busy. The Timorese navy had planned one expedition, but it was postponed when Sea Lord Jakat became ill and died.

Tui-Yin, The Hand of God, Champion of the Hosts of Christ, Celestial Emperor
Diplomacy: Lanchou (ne), Ningsia (p)

The Celestial Emperor spent lavishly on urban development, four new cities sprang up as a result. In addition the large (very large) city of Nanking finally had some urban works done to clean up the filth and poverty that existed within its sprawling city limits. The stink of the poverty, rat infested, city it was said could be smelled from miles away. On the western border the Imperial army marched into Ningsia and made short work of the Buddhist militia there.

The army of the Ming marched north out of Annam, now that the war was over (or at least quiet) the Ming saw no point in keeping a large force down there. A appropriate garrison was left behind to ensure any trouble makers were kept in check. Lord Shensen did not return to the Capital with the army. He was dispatched to Kwangsi were his silver tongue was put to relatively good use.

Diplomacy: Tanjore (t), Chola (t), Pandya (damn Persians!), Ghoumbha (ea)

Global trade requires a presence in all parts of the world. Gokunen knew this well so the Japanese continued their long history of spreading far and wide. Colonist were shipped out to Tierra De Fuego, Camopi, Zufar, Cuna, and idjil to establish colonial ports. They were successful everywhere but Cuna, where the Aztec where on the rampage. Further the Shogun ordered his diplomats to have talks with various local Rajahs in southern India. They too met with great success in all but one place, Pandya. The Persians, damn them, had sent a diplomat who was much more skilled and the talks in Pandya went Persia's way.

Foreign trade was the life blood of any nation. And yet for Nippon Austral it was even more of a concern. There were great security benefits in being so far south and out of the way but this worked against trade. The Shogun realized his realm would have to secure further holdings across the sea. Colonist were recruited and sent off to Palau and Siberut where the cities of Sumisu and Miyaki were founded.
