Newsfax for the year 31-35.
GM NOTES
May 20, 2001
Turns will be due June 3, 2001.
GM notes:
1) Ouch. A long time between the due date and the return of the turns. Vacation and being out of town made this one very delayed. I will strive to do better next time. I hope that the results make for good reading material.
2) The free INFRA point is gone.
3) Unplayed positions will not be entirely inactive. They will allocate funds based on a matrix known only to the GM. They may respond to attacks, and may expand their borders. They will not launch attacks on other nations (unless required by Holy War, etc.)
4) There is a mailing group for LOTE 34 (LORDS34@yahoogroup.com).
5) New seafaring rules are in effect. Players have until turn 11 to meet the criteria or face revolts. Seafaring nations that currently meet criteria may use conduits. This will be indicated under your player notes section.
6) NFP can be saved. If you save greater than your nfp replacement value, there is a chance for a recession (too many unemployed people milling around). If you have a second recession while still suffering from recession, you will go into a depression (very, very bad).
7) Need for exploration: A nation will automatically know all the regular seazone that they could reach with trade. If you wish to go further, you must explore. All inter island arrow, hostile seazones and open open arrows must be explored.
8) I had previously ruled that Queens who married into the Royal Family could not be made heir, as they are not of true Royal Blood. Yet, it has been pointed out to me that the allied leaders who marry princesses and are made heir are not of Royal Blood either. This is an inconsistency that gnaws at my very being. Therefore, any Royal (by blood or marriage) can be named heir. There will be a decreased risk of df if the leader is actually the same bloodline as the King.
9) It is possible for stats to go both up and down. Charisma is particularly vulnerable to shifts. Do not be surprised if success adds to your leaders, while failure subtracts.
10) Slave nations will automatically generate a certain number of snfp per turn. This will show up in the homeland or capital.
11) The founding of a Primate religion has been slightly altered. As new religions have been seriously strapped for cash, as their initial Holy City tends to be in cities that (due to the early city development) have few PWBs. Therefore all new Primates will begin with a church in the region in which the Holy City is located. Already established religions will get a similar one time bonus as well.
AND NOW, WHAT YOU HAVE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR...

THE EMPIRE OF THE SUN - Asiatic Pagan
Empress Ariko
Diplomacy: Yamaguchi (ea)
While The Empire had no direct contact with the mainland powers, word did reach Emperor Miyoshi of the betrayal in the court of the Jade Dynasty. Concern over dynastic issues in his own household (the Emperor had not sired any sons), prompted him to name Princess Ariko as heir to the throne. This was relatively well received, as she was considered highly among the people, both noble and common. The Emperor and his wife suffered through a miscarriage in year 31, but had a son in year 32.
The Emperor began a major effort to provide for his people, investing extensively in the agriculture and sanitation in Yamato. He also sent his trusted advisor, Naoyori, to Saga to continue negotiations there. Unfortunately, Naoyori's ship was caught in a storm off the coast, and he persished with the entire crew. Princess Ariko, now heir to the Empire of the Sun, went to the Southern edge of the main island. There she was able to convince the people that the ways of the Empire were the ways of the future. She came away from Yamaguchi with a strong economic commitment to the nation. She returned home to return to the homeland.
Upon arriving, she found things in disarray. For it seems that the Emperor had taken ill. He was barely able to continue in his role as ruler of the nation. The court physicians felt he would not last much longer. Upon receiving Ariko, he faintly motioned her to his bedside, and grasped her hand. She noted the lack of strength that both she and the country had come to depend on. He spoke long into the night of his dreams for The Empire. Dreams of a nation of peace and harmony, of dedication to the crown, of providing for the people. He then began to speak of his life as a youth, his adventures, both successful and not. He would often ramble on from topic to topic. Ariko listened until dawn broke upon the island nation. As the first sun came up, the Emperor's eyes became focused and he gripped her hand weakly, but pulled her close with the intensity of his stare.
"Now it is you who must dreams the dreams of the future for the Empire
of the Sun. For my time is done here." On the 8th day of November, year
35, Emperor Miyoshi died. Princess Ariko and the nation wept for the man
who had brought such greatness to the Kingdom. Ariko assumed the mantle
of Empress without contest. She continued the policies of her predecessor
and the Empire moved on.
THE JADE DRAGON - Oceanic Pagan
Emperor Shen Tzu
Diplomacy: Hwai (revolts), Jiangxi (ea), Chekiang (ne), Kiangsi (hs), Hunan (a)
Shen Fong heard from the Jade Dragon merchants that while Tzu Lang was a truly amazing city, Beijing to the North was grander still. This can not be! The Emperor again ordered for the expansion of the city. Yet Beijing is still thought to be larger than the Jade capital. The Emperor ruled over his Kingdom, and thought jealous thoughts about his Northern neighbors. Empress Wu Jainen died in childbirth in year 32. The child did not survive. The Emperor remarried, and had son early in year 34. There was another miscarriage in January of year 35.
In year 32, the Warlord of Hwai died in his sleep. His son, a hot headed Hwai nationalist, refused to kneel before Shen Fong, and the region declared its independence. General Wu Tan immediately led a reacting army from the homeland across the river into the region. While he was a fantastic military general, his 1200 men were mostly light infantry, with only a third cavalry. They faced 1800 men plus fortifications, including 200 Hwai heavy cavalry. As Wu Tan crossed the river, his meager force was quickly engaged. While the new Hwai Warlord was injured in the battle, the national army was lost to the last man. Wu Tan, himself, barely escaped with his life. He crossed back across the river.
On the diplomatic front, General Li Fam opened discussions with the Warlord from Chekiang regarding fully joining the nation, but when the General became ill and passed away, the talks fell apart. Still dedicated to the Jade Dragon, the Chekiang Warlord travelled to Kiangsi alone to carry on discussions with the local leadership (he had initially been delegated a secondary roll to Li Fam, but decided to go on alone). Things turned ugly and the Warlord's troops had to engage the Kiangsi militia briefly to get the Warlord out of the region. No casualties were taken, but the Warlord received a nasty sword cut on his arm.
Shen Fong sent his heir, Shen Lan, to Jiangxi to aid his uncle, Shen
Tzu, in negotiations. They were somewhat successful in getting an economic
commitment from the region. They then proceeded on to Hunan where they
entered into intense negotiations with the regional leadership. But the
daily grind of talks weighed heavily on the young Shen Lan. Towards the
middle of year 35, he began to take ill, claiming exhaustion. Within a
month, it was obvious that he was deathly ill. Prince Shen Tzu wrote to
the Emperor, telling of the sickness of the heir to the throne. Nine days
later, he received a message from the Imperial Court in Tzu Lang, immediately
recalling the negotiators, as the Emperor had died suddenly. The messages
had passed each other in transit. Concluding his discussion, Shen Tzu was
able to gain a full alliance with Hunan. He then hurried home with the
sick heir. En route, Shen Lan died. When the royal procession arrived in
Tzu Lang, it was Shen Tzu who stepped up to the throne. The nation held
together at the change over of power, but it was a near thing.
THE JINN DYNASTY - Asiatic Pagan
Regent Mai Ling-Jinn, acting for Emperor Wang Xu-Jim, Forth Emperor of the Jinn Dynasty, Guardian of the Forbidden City and Keeper of the Coral Throne
Diplomacy: none
Sung Lei-Jinn traveled to Kansu to retrieve the garrison there and return it to the homeland. In the years that followed, this one act will be seen as vital to the continuity of the Jinn Dynasty. Upon his return, he named his son, Wang Xu-Jinn, then only 3 years old, as heir to the throne. He named his wife as regent should Wang Xu be elevated to the throne before his majority. He then settled into the again expanding city of Beijing to rule over the nation.
There had recently been difficulties in collecting taxes due to the great size of the Kingdom, and Emperor Sung Lei ordered General Szu Shen-Do to aid him in administering the vast nation. The general, a gifted soldier, felt his talent wasted in the royal palace. Aids would later say that Szu Shen would often argue with Sung Lei over policy, in a voice that often bordered on treasonous. But these memories would be clouded by those who knew what came later. In the year 32, the conflict between the General and the Emperor grew. The Emperor's wife, Mai Ling-Jinn, often counciled the Emperor to be wary of Szu Shen's ambition, but her words fell on deaf ears.
One night in November, year 32, scribes reported hearing a vehement arguement between the Emperor and his advisor over the further expansion of Beijing. Szu Shen-Do arguing that the resources were better spent on encouraging trade with foreigners and building up the more distant regions of the nation, while the Emperor wishing to further consolidate his power in the capital. Szu Shen left the Emperor's audience chamber in anger. Later that night the Sung Lei took ill, and went to bed early. His servants found him dead in his bed the next morning.
As one may imagine, there was much suspicion cast on Szu Shen, and Mai Ling-Jinn, now Regent for the underage Emperor, looked closely into Szu Shen's whereabouts that evening. But he had been in the presence of a number of nobles, and the Emperor's death could not be linked to him. But the results of the next few months again raised suspicion in the minds of the people.
As Mai Ling began ruling as Regent in her husband's stead, Szu Shen began sowing discontent in the court. Those same nobles that had provided his alibi were quick to support Szu Shen's policies. As conflict arose between the General and the Regent, there was growing concern that civil war was to come. Behind the scenes, a furious undercurrent of court politics was raging. For both General Szu and Mai Ling were crafty politicians, and both strove to win the court to their sides. In the end, the General had gathered a number of the nobles to support him, while Mai Ling won the support of the military garrison. When General Szu launched his attempt to overthrow the Jinn Dynasty, he was quickly arrested. In a daring escape, Szu Shen was reportedly wounded, and he and several nobles fled the capital. Most of his other supporters were not so lucky, and the sun cast long shadows over the corpses hanging in the central square of Beijing.
While Szu Shen made several attempts to forment revolution outside the
capital, Mai Ling's harsh treatment of the traitors and her firm grip on
the army quelled any revolt. The Jinn Dynasty escaped with little damage,
and Emperor Wang Xu-Jinn's nation was kept in tact.
THE SUBLIME KINGDOM OF WU - Oceanic Pagan
King Yiu
Diplomacy: Ganzhou (nt)
King Yiu realized that his young nation must establish itself or be crushed by the Jade Dragon to the North, and the numerous smaller Kingdoms in the South. To bring Wu into the mainstream, there must be something that all who enter the Kingdom will recognize as the greatness that is Wu. So the King ordered the construction of a city, Nanhai, to be built on the Donghsa Hai. The King was pleased when his wife gave birth to a daughter in year 32, but after taking fever within days of the birth, his wife passed away. The King realized his need to remarry for the good of the nation, and quickly did so. His new wife had miscarriages in year 34 and 35.
The King gave his brother, Sui-Juen, a position in court. He also ordered
his advisor, Man, to return to Ganzhou to broker an agreement with the
locals. Despite his offer of marriage to Prince Sui-Juen, he was only able
to gain a loose tribute status with the region.

THE LAND OF THE GOLDEN LOTUS - Oceanic Pagan
King Siduna, God-King of Chola, Lord of the Golden Mask and the Emerald Throne
Diplomacy: none
Prince Maharatta died. Prince Saj elevated to a place in the palace.
THE KINGDOM OF KHEMER - Oceanic Pagan
King Besar Alamehli
Diplomacy: Siam (t), Champa (ea), Cochin (nt)
King Besar began a tremendous expansion plan for the Kingdom. To symbolize this change in policy, he ordered the name of the capital changed from Khemer to Angor. He also ordered the founding of a new city, Saigon, in Phan Rang, on the coast of Penunjunk. The increased trade between the two cities caused the population of Angor to grow to almost double its previous size. The King and his wife had a daughter in year 31, but the Queen had difficulties during the delivery and passed away 2 days later.
While the King dealt with the day to day needs of the Kingdom, he sent his heir, Afhala, to Champa, where he was able to secure economic ties to the region, no doubt aided by his taking a bride from the local nobility. Prince Tan went to Cochin and Lord Jind Pol Pot was ordered to Siam. Both had success in their negotiations.
Besar Alamehli had been on the throne for 7 years, when he realized
that he really had no idea what resources he had available to him in his
small kingdom. He personally oversaw the compilation of a list of all the
population and their assets. Now the taxes would come rolling in to Angor!
THE CONCLAVE OF THE GANGES - Oceanic Pagan
King Sudakkar, Rightful King of the Conglave of the Ganges
Diplomacy: Vatsa (nt)
King Sudakkar was a happy man. He had 8 male descendants to guarantee the continuation of his line. His nation was centered around one of the most fertile regions of the world. And peace was at hand with his Eastern neighbor, the Land of the Tiny Fingers. Sudakkar was a bit disconcerted by the size of the Tiny Finger force that had invaded Mandalay. He ordered a vast fortress built in the region of Rajput. But recognizing that he could not hide behind the walls of his citadel, he also ordered the construction of a port area in the region to allow for the construction of seagoing vessels.
The King was greatly concerned about the unrest to the East. For with the passing of King Sajva, and the usurping of the rightful heir, Sudakkar was not entirely sure of the peaceful intent of his struggling friends downriver.
But regardless, Sudakkar must worry about the Conclave first and foremost. He sent his trusted aide, Jahindra, to Vatsa, where he was able to obtain recognition of the Conclaves sovereinty. They were less willing to give up any cash to the Kingdom. As the discussions were nearing an end, Jahindra was bitten by a venomous snake while walking in the gardens of the local lord. He died in year 35. Vatsa did not waiver in their commitment (but neither did they increase it).
The King, meanwhile, transferred control of the army to his heir, and
closely oversaw the nation's economy. He and his wife had sons in years
31 and 34. He also gave his grandson, Saj, a position in court. Merchants
began arriving from the Western border nation of Indus.
THE LAND OF THE TINY FINGERS - Oceanic Pagan
King Sajvala
Diplomacy: Palas (revolted) Mandalay (revolted)
King Sajva ruled in Merdic, while his son and heir, Tripti, defended the realm in Gaur. Sajva decided for the moment not to press his attack against Pegu, having already captured the seaport of Mandalay. He began a project to link Gaur to Assam by post road. He also spent time with his wife and had two daughters in years 31 and 32. But soon after the birth of his second daughter, he became ill with fever. He succumbed late in year 32. Upon his death, it was assumed that Tripti would take the throne, but it was widely known that Prince Sajvala, Tripti's twin brother, coveted the crown of Tiny Fingers. While Tripti held sway in the Royal Court of Merdic, Sajvala had control of the military in the homeland. In a bold move, Sajvala seized the city, and imprisoned his brother.
Several months passed, and Sajvala attempted to solidify his hold. But
General Palax who was commanding the garrison of the sacked city of Mandalay.
When he heard of the King's death, he sent messages immediately to the
King of Pegu. A deal was struck, and the General withdrew his troops peacefully
from Mandalay in exchange for free passage through Pegu. He led the troops
back to the North, and entered Palas. There he was met with great acclaim
as the returning war hero. Emboldened by his success, he pushed on to the
capital. But Sajvala was no fool. He realized that the entire national
army was in the hands of General Palax. When the General's forces entered
Gaur and encamped outside of the capital, Sajvala sent some loyalist nobles
posing as rebel sympathizers to offer aid to Palax. They met with him in
his tent. They refused his offer to join them in a glass of wine. They
gave him assurances that when he entered Merdic they would support his
claim, then they returned to the city. Several hours later, General Palax's
guards heard choking sounds from within. The rushed into the tent to find
Palax in the death grip of a rapidly acting poison, a cup of wine unended
on the desk. King Sajvala ascended the throne with no further challenges.
The army quickly fell in line. Palas, the region that offered initial support
to Palax, revolted, demobilizing the large garrison there into public works.
Tripti languished in the dungeons of Merdic.
THE KINGDOM OF MANDALAY- Oceanic Pagan
King Haumsan Za, King of Pegu, Voice of the Holy Winds, Hands of the Faithful
Diplomacy: none
King Haumsan Za knew it would take a miracle from having the forces of the invading Tiny Fingers decimate his small nation. That miracle came in the form of the Death God taking King Savja from this Earth. Once Savja, who had stolen the throne from the peaceful royal line, was dead, there was great infighting for control. Haumsan Za gladly accepted the withdrawel from the ruins of Mandalay in exchange for passage through Pegu of the invading army. The captured Mandalayan general was also released. With the city back in his control, the King began the process of rebuilding it.
The King married, and had sons in years 31 and 32.
THE ISLAND KINGDOM OF JAVA - Oceanic Pagan
Queen Nam Outang
Diplomacy: Timor (t), Perak (nt)
Queen Nam Outang watched over the growing Island Kingdom. She realized that to control such extensive holdings, she would have to consolidate. She therefore declared Sunda as the capital of the government. She had come to power many years before, but had not taken a husband. This was generally accepted, as there was no shortage of able bodied princes about the palace.
The Queen sent Captain Xu to Timor for negotiations. He was quite successful,
gaining an annual tribute from the region. At the end of year 35, he was
severely injured in an accident at sea, losing both legs below the knee,
and his right eye. He retired from public life. Prince Lampong was able
to get concessions from Perak as well.

THE KINGDOM OF INDUS - Oceanic Pagan
King Kellar II, King of the Scythians
Diplomacy: none
King Kellar II, named his young brother as heir to the throne. He then
ruled over the nation, opening trade with the Conclave of the Ganges across
the desert. He married in year 31, but his first wife died. He remarried,
and had a son in year 34. He began the process of expanding the city of
Indus. Trade ships began arriving from Punt.
THE KARA-KHATAI KINGDOM - Asiatic Pagan
King Zengi
Diplomacy: Ferghana (ea), Otrar (f), Bactria (a)
The expansion of the Kara-Khatai continued unabated. Zengi sent Lord Arslan to Bactria, where he was able to affirm a steadfast alliance. At the same time, Prince Zoltan was able to bring the Otrar region fully into the nation. Lord Riff ventured into the lands of Ferghana, and negotiated with local sultan. The local leadership realized that Zengi was a King of great reknown and he agreed to open trade and other economic relationships with Kara-Khatai.
King Zengi announced a holiday throughout the Kingdom as he announced Prince Orion would be heir of Kara-Khatai. For one day, there was great feasting and celebration across the nation. From the streets of Samarkhand to the fields of Turkman, all hailed the greatnes of King Zengi and his royal line.
At home, King Zengi and Queen Xena tried desparately to have more children.
But the queen was over 30. In year 34 she became pregnant at the age of
34. Difficulties during the delivery cost her her life, but a son survived.
It was a bittersweet time in the Kingdom.
THE KINGDOM OF PERSIA - Asiatic Pagan
King Mithras
Diplomacy: Dasht' Kavir (c), Khurasan (nt)
King Cambyses took a great risk in leaving the day to day running of the government in the hands of Prince Mithras, as he had already shown himself to be less than able at running the nation. But Cambyses recognized that the young man would not gain the required knowledge if he were not put to the test. So with Prince Farzeen at his side, he went off on a diplomatic tour to the East.
The heir and his wife spent much time together. They had a tragic miscarriage in year 31. This was followed by the birth of a daughter in year 32, but a terrible pregnancy in year 33 left the Princess and newborn baby quite ill. Neither survived to year 33. As far as governing, Prince Mithras had great difficulty controlling the country. It was generally felt that he may never have the knack that the current monarch had for maintaining control over vast lands. Yet over time, he seemed to gain confidence. This was greatly put to the test in year 34 when the dreaded news arrived.
The King and Farzeen travelled to Dasht' Kavir. There they spent two years talking with the locals. While they were impressed with the King personally coming to their desert realm, they recalled how quickly Persia let the region go just a decade before. They grudgingly acknowledged Persia's claim over the region. They then moved on to Khurasan, where they began extensive diplomatic negotiations. While out hunting deer in year 34, an errant arrow struck King Cambyses who had charged into the brush after a large buck. As the hunting party laid the King onto the ground, he arched his back in agony and breathed no more. Farzeen sent word immediately back to Persopolis that the King had died. The diplomatic efforts were successful, but limited.
Back in the capital, when word reached Mithras, he immediately called
his father's closest advisor to him. He surprised them all by taking forceful
steps at ensuring a quick and decisive transition of power. This and his
new found ability to rule kept the nation in line. There was no unrest
as he took the throne.
THE KINGDOM OF MESOPOTAMIA - African Pagan
King Jafar
Diplomacy: Diyala (ne), Carhae (nt), Kingdom of Carchemish (fa)
Having recently expanded to the East, King Jafar now looked to the West. Seeing the shambles that recent warfare has left the Kingdom of Carchemish, Jafar begins on an aggressive campaign to begin the process of annexing the small coastal nation into Mesopotamia. He travels with an entourage that includes General Halim and two of the King's young children, Kadar (his 14 year old son) and Manaal (his 10 year old daughter). Together they pass into Carhae. Halim remains behind to discuss issues of diplomacy, while the King travels onward. Not long after the King left, Halim began having difficulties with his digestion. He kept this from his hosts until he became too sick to continue discussions. He passed away by the end of year 31. Still the Carhae leadership was willing to commit to the Kingdom.
King Jafar was received by King Mathison of Aleppo. Initially the meeting was tense, as the Mesopotamian army was one of those ramaging across the Aleppan Kingdom, despite their fighting for Aleppo. The two monarchs discussed many issues. Mathison being new to the throne and almost 40 years younger than Jafar was swayed by Jafar's promises of the benefits that Aleppo would receive at the hands of the Mesopotamians. The King's agreed to marriage contracts for both of the Mesopotamian children. King Mathison, seeing this as a sign of Mesopotamia's commitment to his people, agreed to swear fealty to King Jafar. There was some disgruntlement, and even some open rebellion in Aleppo, but for the most part things remained calm. Jafar remained in Aleppo as an honored guest. He was very happy with his success, but realized that it would take a significant amount of work to integrate this poor nation into his realm. While the current government was able to hold onto its more distant regions, it would be very difficult to control all of Aleppo from his own capital of Jakal. Then of course was the Aleppo use of slaves. But such things would have to wait for another day.
In other diplomatic efforts, Mesopotamia was less successful. Prince
Raziel, the heir, briefly travelled to Diyala, but was unable to get any
concessions there. He returned to rule over the nation. He and his wife
had a daughter in year 33, but had a miscarriage in year 35. The young
heir soon realized that running a nation was not an easy task. He only
barely could keep control of the more distant lands, despite the ever increasing
number of scribes and pages in the palace. A rumor began being circulated
that major portions of the Mesopotamian army had been disbanded, but this
appears to be completely unsubstantiated. On his father's orders, the Prince
entertained a number of religious leaders from the land of Levant. A portion
of them remained in the palace to discuss issues of regional policy and
other such things.
THE MONARCHY OF PATZINAK - Asiatic Pagan
King Alexander Onishchanko
Diplomacy: Mordova (nt), Taman (ne)
King Stephin realized the value of Taman to his nation. It would take years to convert the steppe lands to the cultivated farmland scattered throughout Taman. He ordered Peter Gragoran of Torki to continue his efforts at converting the locals, plus he sent a number of the minor shaman priests of the Asiatic Pagan faith to assist him. While they had some success, they simply were not enough to sway the majority of the population. So when King Stephin arrived with Demitri and Prince Nicklas, they were unable to convince the locals to increase their bond to the Monarchy. It seems that while a huge minority now followed the true path, those in power stuck to the Pagan ways of Europe. Lord Alexander had greater luck in Mordova. In fact, the locals seemed to jump at the chance to be associated with Patzinak. In year 34, tragedy struck the Monarchy, as Stephin Onishchanko, Ruler of the Monarchy, died in his sleep.
Prince Alexander Orinshchanko received the news of the King's death
in stride. He assumed the throne without challenge, and continued to rule
the nation. Wearing the crown of Patzinak seemed to imbibe him with a greater
sense of power, as he ruled fairly and wisely. Perhaps he realized now
that the fate of the Monarchy rested on his shoulders alone. His wife gave
birth to a daughter in year 34, before having a miscarriage the following
year.
THE KINGDOM OF CARCHEMISH - African Pagan
King Mathison, feudal ally of Mesopotamia
Diplomacy: none
King Mathison began his tenure as the monarch of the most war torn nation in the region by ordering work on the expansion of Kadesh. He also married, but after a miscarriage in year 31, his wife died during another pregnancy in year 32. But the King remarried, and his second wife had a daughter in year 33.
The most significant event was the arrival of King Jafar of Mesopotamia.
He came with an offer of peace and protection. The two Kings negotiated
for several years, Jafar remaining a guest in Aleppo. In the end, an arrangement
was made, where cousins of King Mathison were married to a royal prince
and a royal princess of Mesopotamia, and King Mathison pledged the meager
troops of Carchemish to support Mesopotamia. When word went out that King
Mathison had knelt on bended knee before the King of Mesopotamia, Lebanon
revolted. The rest of the nation agreed it was for the best.
THE ISLAND KINGDOM OF RHODES - Oracle of Delphi
King Gorgidas
Diplomacy: none
The die had been cast. The evil inherent in the Eye of Amen-Ra must be crushed, and crushed completely. There were none of the alliance who wavered in that sentiment. King Gorgidas ordered Prince Phillipedees to marshall all the forces of Rhodes, Greece, Troy and Punt in Egypt, and when all had arrived, they were to cross the Nile and rid the world of the Daughters forever. The King offered gold again to Pilbee the Jordanian to lead his mercenary troops, and he continued to pay a number of the hired swords from the previous campaign, as well as gaining some additional mercenaries in Atlantis. These last were shipped over to Egypt to join the assualt. The King then ruled over his nation. Unfortunately, his young wife passed away during childbirth in year 31. The baby, a son, survived. The King remarried, but over the next 4 years his new wife had 2 miscarriages.
Prince Phillipedes left Rhodes to take command of the forces there. He tried to arrange the services of additional mercenaries through Onn, but the recent sacking of the city had left a virtual wasteland; there was no one looking for work in the ruins. There was initially some concern amongst the troops when the representative from Delphi, Raymond Sartius, died at the end of year 31, but Phillipedes was able to calm them. The Prince had under his command, 14 heavy warships, including the elite flagship of the Rhodian navy, over 3500 mercenary cavalry, half of which were light, and 400 mercenary infantry. In addition, The Kingdom of Punt had almost 3000 national infantry, and a few hundred national cavalry, plus a small mercenary contingent of 400 infantry and 400 siege engineers. The Kingdom of Troy brought to the field the most number of national troops, as they arrived with a naval force of 13 warships, mostly light, but several heavy, almost 2500 infantry and 1000 siege engineers. The complement from Greece included over 2500 infantry and 200 light cavalry. While the majority of the force was ready in Egypt towards the end of year 31, Nathaniel of Greece convinced Phillipedes to wait for a contingent of Greek siege engineers being delivered from Athens by Prince Peter Zechias. They were extremely delayed, and did not arrive until well into year 33. But finally, they came. And the host began to move across the Nile into Mansura in May of that year. Phillipedes had planned on leaving Pilbee and his mercenaries in charge of keeping the peace in Egypt, but Pilbee died in year 31. The Jordanian hired swords were left behind with Lord Arkan who arrived to keep the peace through less obvious methods. In any event, Egypt remained tightly under Rhodian control.
Realizing that despite their great number, they would have to begin the battle across the river, Phillipedes (the overall commander of the combined armies) ordered the infantry troops of Greece with their siege engineers to the Northern flank. Without cavalry support, they would be hard pressed, but he planned on using his own troops as a reserve to support the others. The Trojans were arrayed to the South, and the Punt army in the vanguard, followed by the Rhodian men. As the Trojans were gathering on the far side of the Nile, an advance groups of around 500 cavarly struck quickly. They managed to fire a ship and cause some casualties, but they were quickly wiped out to the man. It was only later did the Rhodian commander realize that this was the entire cavarly component of the Nile army!
As the days stretched on, the two armies met numerous times, both bending, but neither breaking. The Greeks in the North and the advancing Punt troops were often facing vigourous counter attacks by the Nile infantry. At one point, the Queen Khapri of the Nile was pushing her forces hard into the center Punt formation, and Phillipedes was supporting the Punt army with his Rhodian force, when word reached him that the Greeks had been outflanked by a moderate sized force. The Greeks had retired from the field. Forced to move his troops Northward, he met this threat with his full army. These Nile troops fought with reckless abandon. They were eventually pushed back. But the need to commit the Rhodes army to the North had allowed the Nile troops to gain the advantage against the Punt troops. As they pushed on, Nashish of Punt saw that his contingent would soon be separated from the rest of the allied armies. He was forced to drop back and take up defensive positions, losing several previous day's gains. With the Northern attack repulsed, Philipedes was able to shift his troops back to the center, and crashed into the advancing Nile army. While neither side had catastrophic losses, the Nile army was heavily weakened, and withdrew to the city of Chethosk.
When Phillipedes and the other commanders saw that the city of Chethosk
had been moved away from the coast, they realized that their siege engineers
would be of little advantage. For the city was unwalled, and consisted
mainly of hastily constructed buildings. Phillipedes ordered the city surrounded,
and then the attack began. It was over fairly quickly, as the defenders
could not withdraw without encountering more attackers. When all was said
and done, the Daughters of the Nile were a vanquished nation. Of note,
none of those who attacked the Greeks in the North survived the battle.
They would accept no quarter and had fought to the last breath. Once the
city fell, there was some disagreement between the allied forces. The Trojan
commander wished to plunder Chethosk, but Nashish of Punt wished the city
to remain intact. Phillipedes felt the need to step in an use his title
of commander of the allied forces to keep the Trojan army in check. Prince
Promethius and General Anticles argued vehemently, but it was not until
the two princes met privately that the issue was settled. The Trojans left
the field rather abruptly and headed home. Having resolved that crisis,
Phillipedes watched with no small amount of disgust as the Punt troops
rounded up a number of Nile survivors and took them away in chains. For
by agreement, both Mansura and Chethosk would be granted to the Kingdom
of Punt. Phillipedes ordered a search for Queen Khapri among both the prisoners
and the dead, but she was not found among either.

THE KINGDOM OF TROY - Oracle of Delphi
King Hector
Diplomacy: Zealand (revolted)
The Trojans sent the largest contingent of national troops to the campaign in the Nile. King Hector ordered an additional 1000 siege troops outfitted to bolster the Trojan forces preparing to continue the conflict in the South. While the armies were delayed in crossing the Nile, it was the Trojans, led by Prince Prometheus and General Anticles, that first engaged the Nile cavalry, leading to the destruction of the entire Nile mounted capability. The Trojan army returned home after the conquest of the Daughters of the Nile. There was some conflict between Prometheus who led the Trojan forces and Phillipedes, leader of the Rhodian army, after the fall of Chethosk. The Trojans wanted to sack the city, but Phillipedes refused. As Rhodes had been given overall command of the allied forces, and Punt now controlled the city, Prometheus simply pulled his men back to their ships and returned home. It is rumored that hot words were exchanged privately between the Trojan and Rhodian princes.
At home, Hector governed the nation. He lost his wife during the second
trimester of a difficult pregnancy. It did not help matters that Prince
Ajax was always underfoot, supposedly helping run the government, while
in truth making a great deal more work for the King. The one thing that
Ajax did correctly was to arrange for a shipment of grain to be sent to
Delphi. On a more concerning note, King Hector had sent funds and manpower
to create port facilities on the island of Zealand in the Baltic Sea. While
he knew of the founding of the new Northern religion, he was surprised
to learn that almost all the population of the island had converted from
their pagan roots to this new religion. Moreover, despite the OD providing
significant support to the founding DOG nations, the people of Zealand
felt that Troy was just too far away to have their best interests at heart.
The island region declared its economic ties to Troy null and void. It
galled Hector to no end that the message was sent by a ship that had recently
been constructed at the very shipyard he had built. Of note, local fishermen
had significant problems when the areas in which they ply their trade began
bringing up tainted fish in August of year 34. The coastal areas off Paphlagonia
had a reddish tinge to it. This was a local problem, as the national food
supply was not supplemented by fishing. Hector sent some local OD clergy,
and prayer and meditation seemed to alleviate the problem by September
of that year.
THE KINGDOM OF GREECE - Oracle of Delphi
King Alexander Zechias
Diplomacy: Macedonia (f)
Alexander Zechias stood with the Kings of Delphi in supporting the destruction of the Daughters of the Nile and their evil faith, Amen-Ra. Alexander sent word to Nathaniel that he would commission 2000 siege engineers to help in fighting the pitched battles in Mansura, as well as sieging the city of Chethosk. Prince Peter Zechias was ordered to return to the capital to bring them to the battlefront. Peter immediately sailed home with a number of transports. But he was not a great leader of men. He ordered the ships to sail too far East, then had to tack back against the prevailing winds for several weeks. After loading the troops, he again was delayed in setting back out for Egypt. But Nathaniel, the Greek commander in the field, was able to keep the Rhodian General, Phillipedes, from beginning the campaign without the Greek engineers. When they finally arrived, the host crossed into Mansura. The Greeks were set upon by fanatical Nile troops soon after forming up on the North flank. While the infantry and siege engineers were quickly forced back, Nathaniel, himself, led the cavalry in a counter charge that killed the Nile general leading the attack. With the aid of the Rhodian army, the North was secured. The Greeks took part in the conquest of Mansura and the subsequent subjugation of Chethosk. Upon completing the conquest, the troops were brought back to Athens.
At home, King Alexander Zechias wooed the Macedonians into fully joining
the nation. He announced that his daughter, Delphinia, would be heir to
the throne, which raised not a few eyebrows (a woman on the Greek throne
was not a concept to which many were ready to accept). Delphinia also agreed
to marry into the Macedonian nobility, securing the Kingdom's relationship
to the region. Alexander also released Constantinople from any debt to
the Kingdom. A significant amount of grain was purchased by the OD Church
to help fund the war effort.
THE ORACLES OF DELPHI - Oracle of Delphi
Oracle Atlante of Rhodes
Diplomacy: Bithnia (mn), Attica (ab), Rhodes (ne), Thrace (ca)
"So much to do and so little time", sighed Atlante.
That seemed to be the phrase oft repeated over the last few months. Raymond was off helping stamp out the last remnants of that disgusting religion. Her sister, Hilde, had gone to the North to solidify good relations with the new Druidic Council. She had also taken a sapling with her to give to the new Head Druid as a symbol of the growing trust and blooming friendship between the two faiths. (Another sigh... make a note... need to build a shrine honoring the tree grove and lasting friendship.) Just one more thing to do.
"Your bags are packed, Oracle," said the porter.
"Thank you. I guess it is time to go to Bithnia," she sighed yet again, "Send a message to my sister, Hilde, about her travelling plans to the Svear and her new assignment in the South."
As for myself, she thought, I have the most to do of all. Getting that monastery built in Bithnia has been a chore. Finalizing relations with the Roman Catholic Church has been successful, but nothing in writing... or as they say, set in stone. Lastly, this I worry about conflict between Punt and Mesopotamia. What a mess! Does no one understand that the darkness is coming? Someone must see the signs besides me. The Barbarian and the Nomad approach and this squabbling must end. Time to write another message... Another sigh.
The Cathedral in Thrace was built by the local people. Its grandeur was rivaled only by the Holy City itself. Of all things, Atlante was most proud of this accomplishment. But there was more work to be done. The Oracle travelled across the Aegean Sea and arrived in Bithnia. Once there she personally took control over the construction of a monastery in the region. While doing so, she received word from Prince Phillipedes of Rhodes that Raymond Sartius had died in November of year 31, his mission unaccomplished. Yet after years passed, she finally received word that the Delphi/Punt offensive had been successful. The Daughters of the Nile was no more. She sighed again, this time in relief.
Another alocotye was elevated to Seer and she ordered an abbey constructed in Rhodes from the existing church, but with the confusion of the war in Mansura, it was not completed. Significant amounts of grain and foodstuffs came in to the church from the faithful.
In the North, Hilde enjoyed the hospitality of the new found Druids
of the Gods. She formally presided over the issuing of a proclamation of
peace between the OD and DOG. The gift of the sapling was greatly appreciated,
and it was planted in a park dedicated to the Oracle of Delphi, in the
center of the Holy City. Hilde, somewhat of a pessimist, fervently prayed
that lightning would not strike the frail tree until after she had returned
to the South. The young sapling survived, and after a brief stop in Ivarhold,
Hilde returned to Attica to found an abbey. She noted that the local OD
priests of the Svear had many "unique" practices, and she had some concern
regarding the lack of a formal presence in the nation. She decided to bring
this to the attention of her sister, The Oracle.
THE KINGDOM OF UNITED LITHUANIA-UKRAINE (KULU) - Druids of the Olde Gods
King Nicholas II
Diplomacy: Livonia (t, then nt), Novgorod (nt, then ne), Kalinin (ne), Tver (neutral), Veposkava (nt, then ne), Estonia (nt)
When the call came out for unity among the Druidic followers, King Petro was not the most enthusiastic monarch to hear the call. But the local Druids that watched over the flock in KULU knew how to reach the King. They described the unity among the secular powers this would bring. They mentioned the possibility of an alliance against the peoples of the steppe. They mentioned wealth and land. It is unclear which of these arguement swayed the Petro, but once decided, he pursued the idea thoroughly. When the OD nations decided to commit to peace, Petro truly realized the power of uniting under the Druids. KULU became an avid supporter of the new religion.
Petro was well rewarded. For when King Varjo of the Kingdom of the North disbanded his realm, Livonia agreed to send tribute to KULU, while Estonia, Vespokava and Estonia all agreed to slightly lesser control. The King then tried to sieze the opportunity to gain even more from these regions. He sent Prince Geoffrey to Livonia. But Geoffrey was only a mediocre speaker, and after hearing what he had to say, the Livonians began to regret their decision to support KULU. While they agreed to remain part of the Kingdom, they refused to send tribute to Tepes. The prince then travelled to Novgorod. The King had briefly stopped in the region prior to Geoffrey, but did not engage in talks. He did arrange for Geoffrey to marry a local woman. Despite the royal wedding, the Prince was unable to convince the locals of the merit of increased ties with the crown.
After his brief stop in Novgorod, the King returned to Minsk to rule. In year 33, however, he took ill with a diarrheal illness that sped through the city. The King died in November. Prince Nicholas II took the throne, and ruled in Petro's stead. His wife gave birth to a daughter in year 33, but had a miscarriage in year 34. At the same time, Tepes, the city South of the capital, was fast becoming one of the largest in the world, just staying ahead of Ivarhold in population.
Dominic tried to reverse the damage he had previously done in Tver.
He was able to ease the hostilities between the region and the nation.
He then set out for Kalinin and Veposkava, but was unable to have any effect
on the regions.
THE UNITED TRIBES OF THE FOREST KINGDOM (UTFK) - Druids of the Olde Gods
King Nikoli, Bearsticker
Diplomacy: Meissen (fa), Himmelskstad (t), Volhynia (c), Gal (aw), Daugava (fa)
King Nikoli the Bearsticker has taken up the crown of the United Tribes in a time of chane. Well has been his education, and much has he learned being at the center of the construction of the city of Himmelskstad. The unfortunate death of his father, though not unexpected, has elevated Nikoli to a position of rule. Although he knew he was much more suited to pursue a life of excitement with the blade, he is wise enough to know that little is to be gained by battle. Balthasar, his trusted general will take up command as defender of Himmelskstad while Nikoli takes up the reins of King. Much must be accomplished before the UTFK is safe from harm. Prior to his departure from the Eastern city, he took part in the founding ceremony of the Druidic religion. Dmitri, Nikoli's youngest brother, is sent to study with the Druids.
Upon returning home, Nikoli learned that not all the regions in the realm had embraced the Druidic faith. Masuria, Bialoweza and Pomern all retained their Pagan ways. The King then focused on increasing ties with the surrounding regions. Nikoli orders to Balthasar were to increase the Kingdom's standing in the Himmelskstad. He was able to do this to some extent, as the secular leaders in the city agreed to send tribute. He sent Kamal, heir to the throne, to Meissen where a feudal bond was created. Things went less smoothly in the South. Prince Durin initially stopped in Volhynia, where the locals were reluctant to embrace the UTFK, although they recognized Nikoli's claim to the region. Further South in Gal, Durin had even more difficulty. The local priests were enraged at the new Druidic religion. Despite all of Durin's efforts, they were able to strike up the populance against the UTFK, as the region declared war against the United Tribes. The Prince was arrested. Durin was barely able to keep them from making an example of himself, as they wished to remove his hands and tongue and return it to Nikoli. Durin was able to get them to agree to free him in exchange for his returning to Poland to give Nikoli the message that the Gal had no desire to serve under a worshipper of false Gods.
During this time, Nikoli spent time with his wife. She bore him a daughter
in year 31, and a son in year 32. But shortly after the boy's birth, she
took ill with fever. For several days she languished, then died. By this
time, Nikoli was realizing that sitting on the throne involved very little
sitting, and more running around. He was forced to deal with so many issues,
both big and small. The issue of sending all the surplus grain from Poland
to Himmelskstad took a tremendous amount of energy. He also had to renegotiate
the relationship between Daugava and the crown. He asked teh Daugavan chieftain
to take the role of defender of the Eastern realm. The chieftain gladly
knelt on bended knee, despite the religious differences between them. It
was with great relief that the King received a number of scribes and administrators
from Himmelskstad to aid in running his huge Kingdom. Not for the first
time, Nikoli wondered how his father had managed to gather all the tribes
together.
DRUIDS OF THE OLDE GODS (previously the Kingdom of the North) - Druids of the Olde Gods
Reverend Mother Lilith
Diplomacy: Himmelstskad (hc), Estonia (ab), Livonia (ch)
The stars were aligned. The moon was full and high over head. King Varjo consulted with his aids. It seems that all of the King's closest advisors were the priests that practiced the old ways, Druids. This was as it should be, for the people of the North were strong in their beliefs. The Druids, many of them women, had often told Varjo that the ways of the Spirit were suffering, for lack of leadership. This concerned the King, for what would become of his people if he were to allow the Druids to merely be a backdrop to his Kingdom? The King knew that he, while a fervent believer, was not pure enough of spirit to lead the nation in the true path. Again he conferred with the Druids.
Over time a plan emerged. Varjo had the Druids send messages to their counterparts in far off and distant lands. They were to broach the subject of organizing the Druids, so that the ways of the Gods would not be muddied by distance and other beliefs. While some resisted, there was a tremendous response throughout the Northern lands. European Pagan priests were begining to present the idea to the Kings of the land. Again, there was resounding support. Varjo again consulted with the Druids, for an undertaking of this magnitude required a center. The Druids came to Varjo with an answer that once spoken aloud was known as truth. For was not Himmelskstad the center of the world? Was not the city formed from the blood and sweat and spirit of people from the KOTN, KULU and UTFK? Where better to serve as the hub of the Druidic faithful? In the end, the Kingdom of the North, the United Tribes of the Forest Kingdom, the Kingdom of United Lithuania-Ukraine, the Kingdom of Avalon, the Kingdom of Durham, the Kingdom of Granada and the Kingdom of Alba, aided by their local Druidic priests, would gather in Himmelstskad and perform an ancient rite that had not been seen in the lifetime of the father's father of the oldest living Druid... the Conclave of the Wicker Man.
For in times of yore, when the Druids sought to band together, one woman (for it was always a female) would be chosen from amongst them to be the Reverend Mother. This woman was often the most experience Druid; a person of great power and wisdom. Yet the chosing is left to the Gods. In midsummer of year 31, the ceremony was held. In the center of the city of Himmelststad was a place most sacred. It was a stand of trees so ancient as to defy imagination. These trees formed a circle, their branches interweaving to form a canopy over the center. It is said that the cover is so thick that no rain falls on those within, although this fact is unknown except by the Druids themselves, as this is sacred ground. Just outside of these trees was constructed a huge figurine of a man, hollow and made entirely from wicker. It stood atop an enormous sacrificial alter. It was before this alter that the Druids from all the lands brought their sacrifices.
In the weeks preceeding Midsummer's Eve, the Druids met within the trees to hear from the Gods who would be chosen to be their leader. For many days no message was received from the Gods. But one morning, after the gathered Druids had spent the night convening with the Gods, young Lilith, youngest daughter of King Varjo who had been chosen to follow the path of the Druids as an acolyte, entered the clearing to bring the mornings sacrificial offering to the priests. As the morning sun crested a rise, a stream of pure sunlight penetrated the wood and struck the childs forehead. The sign was unmistakable. Lilith was to be the Revered Mother.
As Midsummer's Eve approached, all the dignitaries gathered in the city, and the rites began. At the height of the ceremony, ten people who had volunteered were brought forward and tied to positions within the Wicker Man, two in each leg, three in the torso, one in each arm and the ast curled in the head. Each of their families is guaranteed assistance by the Druids, their children educated and treasured by the Druids, and their names spoken with reverence at their sacrifice. Each is guaranteed a place in the Holy Halls along with the Gods, their names engraved in standing stones. As the congregated Druids began an eerie incantation, the eldest Druid set the Wicker Man alight, as each person sacrificed was dedicated to a particular God:
Ukko: Sky-father. The Great Maker, smith of the Gods, bringer of
thunder and storms.
Louhi: Sky-mother. Goddess of the seasons and winds, Lady of the
North, Queen of the Hidden.
Tapio: Lord of the Forest and Wilds, the Horned Man, master of beasts.
Rauni. Mother Earth, Mistress of the fields and the gentle animals.
Tuoni: Lord of the Halls of the Dead, the Red God, lord of Death
and Destruction.
Meilikki: The Young Maid, caretaker for the newborn and bringer
of Spring.
Ahti: King of the Depths, Master of the Oceans.
Aino: Lady of the Lake, bringer of calm and peace.
Utanmo: Guardian of the Dreamlands, bringer of inspiration and dreams.
Tehri: Lady of the Mists, Weaver of Fate, guardian of the crossroads.
The elder Druid intones to all present, "Sacrificial fire is the gate through which we feed teh Goddesses and Gods. To sacrifice is to make sacred. Fire releases the essence of the gifts we give to the Gods, brings it to their world and sanctifies our relationship with them. It is the vessel of hospitality that cements friendship and entitles us to ask for a return gift. Fire creates a crossroad, a meeting place where we can show our respect, good manners, and trade for what we need."
"The Wicker Man is a symbol of our respect for the Olde Gods, of the friendship and honor between the Gods and the People!".
With this, the Druids of the Olde Gods are born!
There was one person present who appeared somewhat out of place among the Druidic faithful. It was Seer Hilde from Delphi. She came bearing words of peace and a young sapling. The tree was planted in a place of honor in the city, to forever proclaim the friendship between the OD and the DOG. Before her departure, she announced with King Varjo and his Druidic advisors the following:
THE ACCORD OF THE OLD GODS (Oracles of Delphi and the Druidic Council)
In the name of the Old Gods of the Earth, Seas, and Heavens: Be it known to all, and everyone whom it may concern, or to whom in any manner it may belong, that the Council of Druids and teh Oracles of Delphi have recognized their common beliefs, and have agreed to the following articles:

King Varjo took his daughter's rise as a sign. For him, there could be no greater honor. He now knew that the Kingdom of the North was nothing but the vessel from which the Druids of the Olde Gods were spawned. For all intent and purpose, the Kingdom of the North was no more. This was brought home quite dramatically, as the region of Latvia, which despite housing the Holy City of Himmelskstad retained its Pagan ways, revolted. The end of the KoTN was near. Varjo gave Prince Valoa the region of Veposkava. He married off Soturi to his daughter, then gave them both the region of Novgorod to call home. The King then ceded both regions and the region of Livonia to KULU. He, himself, then retired to Estonia, and agreed to support KULU.
The Elder Druid, Velhoija, continued to organize the Druids. As Lilith
was too young to take control of the Druidic Circle, he assumed a regency
position, while she remained in seclusion. The finances of the young church
are tenuous at best, as outside of the Holy City of Himmelskstad and a
small church in Estonia, there is no income being generated. Velhoija arranges
to have the local Druids from UTFK, KULU, Alba, Durham and Avalon sent
tithes to Himmelstskad. He also sends one of the inner circle of Druids
to establish a church in Livonia and make the church in Estonia into an
abbey. Velhoija has rapidly become one of the most beloved figures in Druidic
history as he guides the religion through its infancy, awaiting for the
Reverend Mother to assume her office.

THE KINGDOM OF THE SVEAR - Oracle of Delphi
Queen Runa of Giantstock
Diplomacy: Constantinople (ea)
King Thorfinn sent a huge negotiating party down the Dneiper/Dvina River to Constantinople. Prince Halfdan Gunnarsson led the expedition, accompanied by Olaf and Yaroslav. They were exceedingly successful in the very independent minded region, gaining a strong economic presence in the hot lands to the South. Yaroslav took ill in the heat, and died in the year 35.
Meanwhile, things were not well at home. The King's health began failing (some would say that he had never recovered from his wife's death). As he became more and more ill, he retreated from his family. Princess Runa was left to conduct more and more of the duties of running the Kingdom. But she was heir to the throne, and actually quite accomplished in the art of governing. She was able to oversee the various shipping interests of the Svear, and oversaw construction of more housing in Ivarhold, as that city again grew in size. Yet she still worried about her father.
Runa was surprised to learn that a Seer from Delphi had come to Runhavn. With the King in seclusion, no formal welcome was made. She was even more surprised when she learned that the Seer had brought a small shipment of gold to the Kingdom. But without the local authorities having orders regarding this gift, she was not at all surprised to hear that the gold was "lost" at the dock yard. Ruefully, she realized that ruling a nation required a number of different skills.
In November of year 35, word came from the palace at Ivarhold... The
King of the Giants was dead. The man called the Father of the Svear (not
without reason, as Thorfinn had well over 10 children, many of them twins!)
would no more sit on the Svear throne. Runa took over without much dispute.
She continued to rule over her nation as its first Queen.
THE KINGDOM OF FRANCE - European Pagan
King Chlodocech
Diplomacy: Lyonnais (t), Brittany (t), Flanders (f)
Childeric I ruled over his expanding nation. He and his wife had a son in year 31, but a second pregnancy proved too much for Queen Marie. The child proved resilient, though, and survived. The King was distraught over the death of the Queen. He went into a tremendous depression. Servants found him dead in his bed 6 days after her death. The official word was that he passed from grief, although some suspect the monarch of France simply could not be parted from his beloved Marie and took a more acitve role in his own demise.
The heir, Prince Chlodocech, had travelled South to Lyonnais. Upon hearing
of the King's death, he returned to Paris and was crowned King. The nation
was happy with his elevation. He then returned to Lyonnais, where he was
able to negotiate a tributary relationship. The region was obviously impressed
that the new King, himself, decided to continue the talks. Negotiations
also took place in Brittany, where a strange thing was recorded. The majority
of the population followed a strict doctine of Druidic rights whose origins
were far to the East. This was the first encounter with these Druids, but
despite the religious differences, Brittany agreed to send tribute to Paris.
But of all things, the most significant was the final acceptance of France's
rule over the region of Flanders. With the death of Childeric I, the people
of Flanders felt a massive weight lifted from their hearts. The local garrison
which had previously been required to keep the peace, was now welcomed
as defenders of the region.
THE KINGDOM OF LORRAINE - European Pagan
King Harold
Diplomacy: Hainaut (nt)
Prince Edelmar was a problem. He was not well liked at court, but more importantly, he really annoyed King Gearald's new wife. The King came to a decision that Edelmar's service to the crown would be terminated. He was given the region of Hainaut to call his own. The region maintained some connection to the Kingdom, but without Edelmar around, things became more sedate. Prince Alfred, Gearald's 19 year old son was elevated to a position in court. He learned at the side of Prince Harold how to rule over the nation, for Harold was an able leader. His wife gave him sons in years 33 and 35.
Things went smoothly in the nation. The Northern port of Drusenh was
rapidly becoming the center of trade for the nation, and it continued to
grow in size. In year 32, the King was riding at the head of the national
army, when his horse bolted. The King fell and struck his head. He was
carried to the palace, where he was attended by his wife, Prince Harold
and a huge number of Royal children. The King never regained consciousness.
Harold became King without so much as a whisper of discontent. After all
he had been effectively ruling as the monarch for the past many years.
But wearing the mantle of King made the job that much more difficult for
the young man. Prince Alfred was made heir, and Aethelwulf entered the
court scene.
THE KINGDOM OF BAVARIA - Roman Catholic
King Franz
Diplomacy: Carinthia (ne), Moravia (nt), Tyrol (revolted)
Much of the Royal Family turned out for the wedding of Prince Franz, the heir, to a local noblewoman. But after the festivities, things settled down into day to day life. Prince Friedrich was put in charge of administering the large Bavarian nation. This he did quite effectively. Duke Otto travelled about the nation with the national army, "showing the colors" so to speak.
Meanwhile, King Gustav and Prince Franz went to Carinthia and Moravia, respectively, seeking to expand the national borders. Initially, the King appeared to be doing well in the Roman Catholic region. But when he had to take to his bed in year 32, all negotiations were halted. Things grew more worrisome as the year went on. He became weaker and weaker, until finally he succumbed in December of year 32. The Carinthians were not swayed.
Franz had a more difficult task. He had great difficulty not showing his distain for the Pagan beliefs held in Moravia. While he was shocked and saddened by the King's death. He welcomed the brief journey back to Munich to have the crown placed upon his head. He was able to marvel at the extensive building that had gone on since his departure. The city had doubled in size. But he was forced to return to Moravia to continue his activities. In the end, he was able to reach an agreement with the Pagan Moravians.
With the death of the King, there was grumbling at the periphery of
the nation. Only in Tyrol did words muttered behind gloved hands become
drawn swords, as the region revolted from Bavarian control. Without the
strong hand of Gustav ruling from Munich, the fragile nation was straining
at the bit.
KINGDOM OF ALBA - Druids of the Olde Gods
King Malcolm
Diplomacy: Shetlands (revolts), Denmark (revolts), Gotland (fa, then revolts), Saarema (c, then revolts), Highlands (nt)
Change wss in the air. King Dougal was part of a growing number of monarchs who wished for a more organized form of worship, yet cherished the ancient Gods. An answer came from far to the East. Dougal decreed that Alba would help found a new Druidic religion. In fact, the Queen and one of her sons went across the Baltic Sea to represent Alba at the consecration of the Holy City. The masses quickly adopted this new found faith.
King Dougal travelled up to the Highlands, and tried to improve the relationship with the nation. Prince Malcolm travelled with him, although did not directly participate in talks. For several years, the King tried to work out a number of issues with the independent minded Highlanders. But unfortunately Dougal was not a well spoken man. At one point, in year 33, he got into a shouting match with a Highland chief, and stormed out of the building. Several horsemen were galloping through the town, and did not see the Alban King step into the road, lost in his thoughts. The King was trampled beneath the horses' feet and killed instantly. The Highlanders were concerned with backlash from Scone, but Malcolm tried to assure them that no retribution would be sought. Regardless, the region decided not to send tribute in case the gold was needed in its own defense.
Distraught by the happenings in the Highlands, King Malcolm (having taken up the crown), took a contingent of ships and continued on with his goal. The discovery of the unknown. Malcolm was able to travel to the North and discover an island to the Northwest of the Shetlands! He returned home to learn that, despite Scone almost doubling in his absence due to increased trade, things were not well.
For it seems that Aongus had been sent to the East to conduct negotiations
with the leaders of several islands in the Baltic Sea. While he was able
to secure some relationship with them, the death of the King, plus being
so far away from home, gave him feelings of grandeur. When he heard that
other parts of the Kingdom had similar feelings, he rallied them to his
cause. He claimed Denmark as his homeland, and the Shetlands and the Baltic
Isles agreed to follow him. Thus was born the Kingdom of Denmark. Aongus
died shortly thereafter, allowing Malcolm some degree of justice, but is
it enough...
THE KINGDOM OF DENMARK - Druids of the Olde Gods
King Teller
Diplomacy: Denmark (hm), Shetlands (f), Saarema (f), Gotland (f)
An offshoot of the Alban Kingdom. A small nation in a world of Giants.
THE KINGDOM OF AVALON - Druids of the Olde Gods
King Mordred
Diplomacy: Galacia (f), Portugal (t)
Bells rang throughout the nation as it was announced in year 31 that Fiona, Queen of Avalon, had delivered twins, a boy and a girl. King Mordred was exceedingly proud. He ruled over Avalon in peace and prosperity. While Fiona had a miscarriage in year 32, she gave birth to another daughter in year 34. Avalon was a co-founder of the new Druidic religion, and was pleased to see the extension of the new religion throughout Northern Europe.
The King had sent a number of envoys to Iberia. Lord Rincewind went off to Portugal, where he learned that the Druidic faith had taken strong root in the region. Almost the entire population already followed the Druids of the Olde Gods. For several years he labored to get the Portuguese to commit to Avalon. In year 34, he suffered a bout of dysentery, and passed away. But not before he was able to gain tribute from Portugal. It seems that the fear of previous Morrocan raids made the region eager for a protector.
Both Prince Bragga, who had married into the family, and Lord Gawain
travelled to Galacia. There they spent significant time convincing the
locals that Avalon had more than enough ability to protect them. Gawain
passed away in his sleep in year 33, and Bragga died the following year.
But the two were extremely well liked in Galacia, and despite their deaths,
Galacia agreed to become part of the nation. Prince Hargas was promoted
to a position in the London court.
THE KINGDOM OF DURHAM - Druids of the Olde Gods
King Ethelred, Dracusnaggan
Diplomacy: none
There were many changes taking place in the realm of Durham. Foremost was the coming together of a number of Northern nations to foster the creation of the Druids of the Olde Gods. King Ethelred was a central part of the creation of this new religion. He sent Earl Ifor ap Morgan to Himmelskstad to represent the nation. Earl Ifor arranged for a large shipment of barley and wheat to be given to the new found primacy. But moreover, the King's daughter, Aelfgifu, was sent as well. It seems that the girl had shown signs of religious ecstasy even at the young age of 7. She was to be given over to the Druids for religious education. Unfortunately, on the return route, Earl Ifor's ship foundered in the Baltic Sea, and he was lost in the icy waters.
Another major change in the Kingdom was directly related to the development of the Dracusnaggan. Ever since Ethelred's name became synonomous with the Dragon, men had begun to pledge themselves to the Dracusnaggan. At first, it was merely the nobility. This was not unusual, as this level of society had always provided the military support needed by the King. For in Durham, if one were born to nobility, one would always be such, and were one born a peasant, one would be buried a peasant. But with men of the middle castes (the merchants and free farmers) being swept up by the Dragon legend, Ethelred was faced with a number of them leaving their shops and farms, and swearing to serve him. The King realized that many of these men were able-bodied, and a number were quite capable leaders, as well. In order to reward these men who served so willingly, Ethelred began doling out land to each of them, creating small fiefs throughout the Kingdom. As landowners, by writ of the King, they were required to collect the King's taxes from those who worked their parcel of land, and to provide military aid to the King at his whim. While peasants were likely to still die as peasants, the rigid caste structure of the Kingdom gave way to a feual society.
The King also wished to come to terms with the people of Lothian. He sent Earl Robert Guilford to try to gain further understanding of these people. While the Earl had some success, the Lothians did not adopt the Druidic ways, and he felt that until these religious issues could be settled, any final settlement would be unlikely.
The King took this news in stride. He was quite busy at home ruling
over the nation. Queen Edith died in year 32 while giving birth to a daughter.
The baby survived. The King remarried, and his new young wife gave him
two sons and a daughter over the next three years.
THE GREEN TRIBE - European Pagan
King Shaunassey
Diplomacy: none
King Seamus II ruled his nation. Again, storms off the coast of Waterford
raged throughout year 33, limiting the shipping that could reach the city.
In year 33, Seamus II died. He had begun expanding Waterford, and King
Shaunassey vowed to continue the effort. .

THE KINGDOM OF CATALONIA - Roman Catholic
King Dropan
Diplomacy: Aragon (fa)
King Dropan, realizing the need to extend his holdings, remarried. He took as a wife a woman from Aragon. As the people of Catalonia were avid Roman Catholics, this was initially viewed with a great deal of skepticism. But when his new wife quickly abandoned her African Pagan ways and converted to RC, they accepted her fully. Dropan tried to parley the marriage into political gain as well. He sent Francois, the ally from Navarre, to open talks with the Aragon leaders. There was initially some controversy when Prince Phillip (soon to become King) of Granada arrived. But when talks seemed to be going Francois way, he left. While Francois made some headway, the religion issue that had Aragon revolt from Catalonia control years ago raised its ugly head again. In the end, between religion and the Granadan influence, he was only able arrange a feudal alliance between Aragaon and Barce-Lona.
At home, the King ruled his nation with the help of Prince Dropie, who
had been officially made heir of the Kingdom, and Prince Alphonse, who
had recently been given a role at court. The two made an interesting pair.
For where Dropie was terrible at court affairs, Alphonse was extremely
talented. Unfortunately for the Kingdom, Alphonse spent most of his time
fixing Dropie's mistakes. Dropie did get married, and after having a miscarriage
in year 31, had a daughter in year 32 followed by a son a year later. The
King and his new wife had a miscarriage in year 32, and a daughter in year
34. But the new Queen did not tolerate the second pregnacy very well. She
died of blood poisoning several days after the birth.
THE KINGDOM OF GRANADA - Druids of the Olde Gods
King Phillip
Diplomacy: New Castile (ne), Murcia (f), Aragon (ne)
King Sanchez was in a difficult position. He knew that to the South and East, nations of the Roman Catholic faith looked on his nation with great interest. For he had not yet committed to Rome. He knew that without such a commitment, they would always view Granada with some skepticism. But the teachings of Rome did not move him. Granadans were neither avid believers in the Pagan ways, nor were they so secular that they would fail to make the appropriate sacrifices to the Gods on Holy Days. Sanchez, himself, was in search of spiritual guidance. He had spoken with the trade representatives from both Greece and Troy (followers of the Oracle of Delphi). While they described the wonders of Delphi and the greatness of the Oracle, what intrigued him was words of a new religion that was forming to the North, up the Dvina and Dneiper River. He ordered one of his trusted advisors to travel to the North and find out about this new faith. The man made a brief stop in New Castile, but was unsuccessful at convincing the allied region into greater ties with the crown. Then he headed North. But when the man reached the English Channel, that was the extent of the known waters. Not having the resources to press further, he put into London for a brief rest. There he heard tell of the new Druidic faith. He spent over a year learning of the faith, then spurred by this knowledge, he returned to tell his King.
Sanchez found great peace in the Druidic teachings. He immediately sent word to Himmelskstad that he would openly support the formation of the new primacy. He then ordered the conversion of the nation to the Druids of the Olde Gods. The entire nation embraced the new religion. There were massive celebrations from Andalusia to New Castile. However, the celebration in the latter region was cut short, as word reached them that religious dissent was brewing in Ipo. The ally in New Castile had been charged with the defense of the nation. His troops marched into the city, and began searching for the source of an outbreak of RC support. It turned out to be none other than the new Pope of Rome! On orders from the King, the Pope was to be turned away. He left, but not until after a small minority of RC faithful was established in the capital.
While all this was going on, King Sanchez ruled over the nation. He
and his wife suffered through four miscarriages between year 31 and 34.
Prince Phillip had been dispatched to Murcia, where he took a wife, and
convinced the region that its future would best be served by being fully
integrated into Granada. He then moved East to Aragon, where to his surprise
a representative from Catalonia was courting the locals. When he learned
that the King of Catalonia had married into the Aragon nobility, and Francois
was gaining the acceptance of the locals, he politely withdrew. In year
34, King Sanchez was killed while on a hunting expedition. Phillip assumed
the throne without difficulty. He realized that he may have to deal with
the backlash from the Roman Catholics.
ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH - Roman Catholic
Pope J. Scripo
Diplomacy: Latium (ab), Campania (ab), Tuscany (ab)
Pope Gregory I set out on a daring venture. Some would say foolhardy. He personally began travelling the pagan lands in Gaul to convert the locals to Roman Catholicism. He set out for Lyonnais first. There he openly preached the Gospel to the European Pagans. As the people of Lyonnais had great fear and loathing of the Catholics, and as Gregory I was not the best orator, it is of little surprise that the people took him and martyred him, leaving his body to rot, impaled on a spear. Rome was incensed at the news, but when it was learned that Cardinal J. Scripo would sit on the seat of St. Peter, they were calmed. For surely the new Pope would not take such risks with his most holy of personages. One of the new Pope's first actions was to reward the faithful Kingdom of Sicily with additional scribes and other government officials to help run the government in Syracuse.
Cardinal, now Pope, J. Scripo went out amongst the people he travelled
to Campania and Tuscany, where he oversaw the building of abbeys in both
places. He was happy with the abbey construction in Latium, as well. He
also stopped in Ipo, the capital of Granada, where he preached to the people.
The government in Ipo did not support his efforts, and when troops arrived
in the city, he bid a hasty retreat. A small portion of the populace was
converted to RC before the Pope returned to Rome.
THE DUCHY OF LOMBARDY - Roman Catholic
King Otto
Diplomacy: Verona (c)
King Heinrick was angered by the revolts in the nation. All sea trade had been cut off to the nation by the loss of Liguria and Verona. But heeding the words of his advisors, he took a more diplomatic route than that which first leapt to his mind. Leaving the heir, Prince Otto, to rule over Lombardy, he and Lord Adamar went to Verona. There, Adamar focussed on preaching the Gospel to all that would listen, while the King discussed politics with the local nobility. They were somewhat successful in converting the people, but in year 34, the King took ill. He passed away, and Lombardy was left with just a claim on the region, based on their prior relationship. Prince Gunther went West to Liguria, where he was able to sway a portion of the population to RC. While no one religion has a majority in the region, RC is the one more often practiced now.
In Lombardy, Prince Otto received word of Heinrick's death. He had been
King in all but name for four years, so the transition went smoothly. He
had a son in year 35. Prince Gunther was named heir, and Prince Erik, the
20 year old son of old King Petrik, was given more responsibility in court.
Word began spreading that old European rites were being practiced in secret
in small mountain passes of the Alps in Savoy. Clandestine sacrifices were
being made, and mysterious disappearances were reported. The court agents
that Otto sent to investigate could not substantiate these rumors.

THE SULTANATE OF MORROCO - Roman Catholic
Sultan Hamir
Diplomacy: none
Morroco was doing quite well. But the Sultan was getting on in years. He wished to assure a smooth transition of power to his Prince Hamir. He realized that young Prince Ghalib may see the Sultan's death as a chance to seize power for himself. He therefore made Ghalib swear upon his sword that he would follow Prince Momar when he becomes sultan. Ghalib took the oath without question. Now, thought the Sultan, it remains to be seen whether he will be true to his word.
The Sultan ruled over his nation. He ordered Prince Momar to be on guard for attacks on the nation, but also saddled him with so much administrative work that he could do neither effectively. In year 34, perhaps distracted by so much responsibility, the Prince was thrown from his horse, and killed. Prince Ghalib, too, was given conflicting instructions, and therefore was ineffective. Sheik Abdullah was able to step in and help the King in the business of running the country.
Some interesting diplomatic events occurred. Ships sent to reestablish
trade with the Green Tribe never returned. Sultan Hamir had expected to
be granted control of a city in Calabria from the Sicilians to further
their trading reach, yet no such exchange took place. Hamir was less than
pleased to realize that there was no city in Calabria!
THE ISLAND KINGDOM OF SICILY - Roman Catholic
King Axeres
Diplomacy: Campania (f), Latium (f)
King Axeres received offers of governmental support from the Catholic Church in Rome. He gratefully accepted. He sent his new bishop to Latium, where he was able to secure the region fully into the nation of Sicily.
The Campanians also pledged full support to the Island Nation. This despite the death in year 34 of Lord Arcam who was conducting negotiations. A port area was created in Kabilya, allowing safe havens for Sicilian ships. In other happy news, the King and his wife had a son in year 34, although they suffered a miscarriage in year 35.
More rumors of financial exchanges between Syracuse and Rome continued.
Initially it was felt that these were perhaps to "purchase" the promised
government support. But in the end, when Rome denied accepting any funds
and extensive searching by detractors to the crown failed to confirm any
gold changing hands, there was no basis for the charges.
THE DAUGHTERS OF THE NILE - Eye
of Amen-Ra
Queen Khapri
Diplomacy: none
<ELIMINATED>
Queen Khapri met with her husband, Rituk, and her warchief, Basridi. For the Daughters of the Nile faced a grave threat. The combined forces of Punt and The Oracle of Delphi nations had struck deep into the nation. They had sacked Onn, leaving it a mere shell of a city, with the Eye of Amen-Ra Church in complete disarray. Khapri knew the Nile populace wanted vengeance. She too wished to see the invaders spitted on spears, but having faced this host on the field before, she knew that her entire nation was at risk. For while the Nile naval prowess was as good as any other, and their foot troops were excellent, their mounted troops were not as well trained as their enemies. Khapri had seen this first hand. But the local people did not care. They were incensed at the attack on the Holy City. The average peasant saw the Nile military as the force that destroyed the vile Jordanians, not as the relatively small force that barely retook the homeland from an unprepared garrison. So the three began planning. Notably absent was the Sinai ally, who had so bravely retaken Mansura from the heathens.
When asked by Basridi about his absence, the Queen informed him that she had released him from his vow of service. This suited all in the room, as Basridi despised his African Pagan ways, and as rumors had spread that the relationship between the Sinai leader and Khapri were more than political, Rituk wanted him as far away as possible, while Khapri wanted him safe from harm. Khapri (often considered as good a strategist as her predecessor), told them of her plan. Orders had been given to evacuate the city of Chethosk. The city and all its populance would be moved inland to avoid further sea assault. While this would leave it unprotected by any walled fortification, all available troops would need to repell the anticipated attack across the Lower Nile from Egypt. The Queen declared martial law throughout the land. Basridi was tasked with obtaining as much information as possible about the likely route of attacks to be taken by the OD/Punt army and how best to position the Nile forces. Taking the 600 cavalry, Basridi rode to the border and began scouting. The Queen also ordered the naval vessels in Chethosk scrapped. The sailors were brought inland and made part of a large series of forts being set up across the region to repell the invasion.
As she was preparing her forces, she received word that a force was coming from the West. She smiled to herself, as she felt that this was the Sinai forces disobeying her orders to remain neutral. But rather than the pennants of the desert region, she saw the flag of Amen-Ra snapping in the breeze. A female rider came forward and bowed to Khapri.
"My Queen, I am Herassa. I bring you those who would fight to restore the Holy City of Onn to its rightful place at the center of the World. We will ride at your side to the city!"
Queen Khapri looked at the 1000 armed riders and the 400 foot troops. Given her forces only numbered slightly over 2000 (plus Basridi's cavalry and about 15 fortified positions, she welcomed the Amen-Ra zealot.
"My Queen, it appears that you are preparing to meet the Dephinians here, rather than cross the river and take back what they have stolen from us."
"This is true," explained Khapri, "For if we can not hold them here, then we will never retake Onn. But have no doubt, they will come to Mansura. Then you will be able to reap your vengeance. We will then cross the river."
Without any primate leadership, both Queen Khapri and Herassa knew that the Queen spoke with the voice of Amen-Ra. "As you command, My Queen."
Khapri quickly positioned the additional troops into the defenses. Word arrived later that Punt naval troops had been seen off the coast in the Red Sea, but departed without landing. And the Nile army waited... and waited... and waited...
In May of year 33 (two and a half years later), word arrived that the enemy was beginning to cross the Lower Nile. Basridi returned with information that the Queen quickly incorported into the defensive plan, having the religious troops form up to the North, where they would be able to strike at the Greek forces that were staging on that flank, as Basridi informed her that they were almost all infantry and siege troops. In August the armies met. Basridi led his cavalry in an early charge directly into the Trojan forces along the Southern flank as they formed up on the East side of the river. But supported by the large naval presence, Basridi and all 600 horse were lost in a horrendous day of fighting. They managed to fire 1 ship, but inflicted fewer losses than they received. As the bulk of the invaders surged forth, they were met by Queen Khapri leading her infantry, and supported by large numbers of forts. The forces from Punt and Greece met significant resistance, and while taking only moderate loses were repulsed in their initial attack. Additional sorties failed to break the Nile defensive lines, and both nation's forces left the battlefield. Meanwhile, on the Northern flank, the religious troops under Herassa were able to position themselves behind the Greek troops. Their initial charge was very effective, scattering the Greek infantry and siege troops. The few Greek cavalry responded, and in a counter charge, led by Nathaniel of Greece, Herassa was severely wounded with a sword cut to the left arm and face. Without her leadership, the religious troops were disorganized. When the Rhodian sailors from the ships on the Nile came to support the Greeks, they were able to cause heavy casualties to the Nile zealots, forcing them to fall back. The Rhodian army then pushed them back. With the flank secure, the army from Rhodes was able to bring it full force to bear on Queen Khapri and the defending Nile national troops. Leading a mostly mercenary army, Rhodes was able to inflict great damage to Khapri's forces. After several more weeks of taking significant losses, the Queen realized that the battle for Mansura was lost, and she pulled back into Chethosk, now an inland city.
Both sides spent the winter regrouping. Both Khapri and Herarra were able to rally most of their forces. In April of 34, the combined invading army advanced on Chethosk. While the overall numbers were more even as the attackers did not have there ships to support the army, neither did Khapri have the field forts to support her mobile troops. Chethosk, having been recently evacuated from the coast, had no walls. The fight was joined in the fields and between the buildings of the Nile capital. This time there was no possibility of escape. The invaders attacked from all sides. The Nile national troops were hunted down and the few who were not killed were forced into slavery by the Punt troops. Herassa's force stood their ground in the main square, and were exterminated to the last soldier. Herassa, already wounded, threw herself on her sword when she realized that the day was lost and the Holy City would not be liberated from the heathens. Queen Khapri was seriously wounded in fighting on the North side of the city, but her body was not found among the dead.
A nation that had spawned some of the greatest military minds the world
has yet seen, and that brought to preeminence the sect of Amen-Ra was no
more. With the collapse of the capital, the Thinis, Yemen and Ad' Diffah
proclaimed their independence (and sent messages to the OD nations and
Punt that they were never very close to the Nile rulers in Chethosk.

THE KINGDOM OF PUNT - African Pagan
King Lashik
Diplomacy: none
"The dreams?" asked Prince Mishamish.
"No change, Your Highness," replied the servant, "Almost every night. He moans and thrashes. Occasionally crying out about spies and being watched. He has ordered slaves to keep candles lit in his bedchamber throughout the night. Three times in the last week, a candle has been blown out by the wind. The King ordered the candle slave to have his eyes removed with a hot poker, then flayed alive."
"I had heard none of this," said Mishamish.
"In court, he is fine. It is only at night, or when he is alone."
"With the King's orders to conscript every able bodied man and boy in the Kingdom, we will soon crush the Eye of Amen-Ra and the Daughters of the Nile and he will be better," reassured the Prince.
The servant looked doubtfully at the closed door to King Lashik's chambers, "Shall I announce you, Your Highness?"
Mishamish briefly glanced at the door then said, "No, I must write letters to our Delphi allies and to Prince Nashish who will carry out the attack against the daughters. Keep me informed of anything new in the palace."
"Of course, Your Highness."
The prince left to carry out his numerous tasks. While the King had ordered a massive conscription effort throughout the Kingdom, he had not ordered the troops sent to the war in the North. Rather he instructed Prince Mishamish to create a cadre of men to serve in a new unit that Mishamish would command himself, The Buffaloes. With these troops and some mercenaries, he watched for a possible counter attack from the Nile. Thankfully, none came. In year 31, just prior to him taking command of the new Buffaloes, his wife gave birth to a son.
King Lashik, despite his restless nights, still managed to rule over Punt with ease. While the Queen now slept in a separate chamber, the King still attempted to father more children. He was not successful. Lashik opened trade with Indus, as well. In the summer of year 33, he set off to the North to personally oversee the blockade of Chethosk, believing the land forces would already have taken Mansura. As his captains brought the Punt fleet up the Red Sea to where the Nile capital should be, there was great confusion. The city had vanished! Despite the sea captains pointing out that the city had obviously been abandoned, Lashik became convinced that the Eye of Amen-Ra had seen them coming and had used magic to make the city vanish. It was only after he had returned home that he received word that the combined army had not even left Egypt yet.
While the King was not pleased to hear this, the subsequent news of the fall of Mansura and Chethosk and the ultimate dissolution of the Daughters of the Nile improved his spirits. He was even more happy to learn that the contents of the Nile treasury and a number of DoN slaves had been taken in the war.
While all this was going on, Ismil had been sent to Adulis to convince Popoli, the Adulis ally, that Amen-Ra has abandoned them with the fall of Onn to Oracle troops. But as often is the case with matters of the Gods, Popoli would not listen. While not being as extremist as those of Onn, he woud not abandon his ways.
Of interest, an item noted in The History of the Peoples of Arabia, written by Raymond, Seer of Delphi, in year 29 during his time with the combined army described the people of Punt thusly...
"The Kingdom that shares the Red Sea with the foul servants of Amen-Ra [Punt] is a nation of black seafaring people. Physically, they are fairly short, tending almost towards dwarf status. Being fat is considered a status symbol. Culturally, Puntians favour an animist pagan religion, i.e. rather than having a particular entity as "God of the Sea", they refer to the sea (and the sky and the earth, etc.) as an entity itself. "Old Father Ocean" and the like. They revere the qualities of certain noble animals, placing great importance on such honorifics such as "Nashish, the Lion" or the title bestowed on the heavy infantry troops, "the Buffaloes". Lastly, they are fatalists, with little respect for individual human life, and great respect for adhering to the customs and taboos of their people. For instance, a transgressor will often commit suicide due to the shame of his crimes rather than try to run away and escape the punishment of his peers.
Certain rituals surrounding meals are..."

THE KINGDOM OF IFE - African Pagan
King Mubasu, Lord of the Niger
Diplomacy: Yoruba (f), Togo (a), Kafin (hs)
The ancient call to the sea was strong in the Kingdom. Krulda realized that his expansion up the river was not sitting well with the people, and that they identified much more with those of Yoruba and Togo than with the Niger denizens. Plus, holding the wilderness had stretched the government terribly. The King therefore called for a change in policy. For two and a half years, he ruled the nation, making sure his plan would proceed without difficulty. Then he personally went to Kwararafa and pulled the garrison out of the region. Despite the brief Ife occupation, he was able to peacefully withdraw, and the locals were simply so happy to have their freedom that they did not trouble the King. Next he stopped in Kafin, where things got a bit more dicey. He ordered the 200 national infantry out of the region, and then pronounced that Kafin would be set up as an independent region, separating it from the Kingdom of Ife. The Kafin tribesmen had by this point felt themselves fully the subjects of Ife. So strong was the discontent that Krulda was forced to leave quite quickly.
While this was going on, Lord Malagar travelled to Togo, where he was able to obtain a formal alliace with the region. The Togo Chieftain realized that Freeport would provide ample trading opportunities for his nation, and its presence was certainly a factor in his decision. Unfortunately, Malagar took ill during the negotiations. Had he not passed away in year 34, Togo may have committed even further to Ife. Prince Mubasu travelled to Yoruba where he brought the region fully into Ife. But then he was urgently called home.
The King had arrived back in North Gate towards the end of year 33.
Within four weeks of his return, he began having bouts of abdominal pain
that would occasionally leave him writhing on the floor. Over two days
he continued to have pain, and abruptly began vomiting up blood. He was
dead within minutes. While initial suspicion was cast on Kafin agents,
no hard evidence could be found. When Mubasu returned to North Gate, he
was crowned King. There was no dissent, as he was known as a fair and just
man.
THE MADREGAIST CHURCH - Madrigaist
Primate Tuhara
Diplomacy: Songhai (ch)
Tuhara was initially livid when he understood that his role as Primate
would keep him from the politics of the Court in the Kingdom of Mali-Wagadu.
But over time, he realized that not only was the primacy a potential seat
of power in its own right, but that he would be able to fulfill two of
his greatest desires. Be a force among men, and serve the Gods. He quickly
put the petty interests of Mali-Wagadu behind him and began organizing
the church.
THE KINGDOM OF MALI-WAGADU - Madrigaist
King Lasaka Haru
Diplomacy: none
Tuhara, the Minister of Madragaism, waited patiently for King Lasaka to ponder his latest request. The Ministry had been difficult to handle. For while Lasaka Haru understood that as a King, he would always be just below the Gods in the great wheel of life, his minister Tuhara seemed to feel that his place was on par with that of a King, being responsible for the spiritual purity of the followers in the area. This troubled Lasaka. For he and Queen Kalimansa had no children yet, and Tuhara was just the sort to see the empty throne as a place to rest his spiritual arse. Realizing that he would have to make a major shift in his thinking about this religion he had elevated to a position of power within the Kingdom, he glanced up over the elegantly scribed proposal.
"I am afraid, my dear Tuhara, that your request can not be granted at this time", the King continued before his minister could voice his objection, "It is just not feasible to transfer governing control of the city of Patgao to the Ministry, nor to allow the ministry's messengers priority access along the King's road to Gorouol. For the new city of Shawngara in Gorouol will require significant traffic along the road."
"But Your Majesty, such access is vital to the work of the Gods. The various tasks that Your Majesty imposes upon the Ministry require that we have such control."
The King smiled inwardly, as he realized that it was true. He had used the Ministry of Madragaism to further the ends of the crown, and while having such access would better allow this to occur, it would also allow the Ministry to be in a solid political position to seize control when the time came.
"I have long considered the burden that is placed upon the messengers of the Gods by the crown," the King said to the nodding Minister, "I worry that such burdens are no in keeping with the intent of the Gods." The Minister nodded less vigorously.
"I wish to allow the Madregaist faith more freedom to guide the souls of the people", the King said. Tuhara's eyes widened slightly, "I feel that the direct oversight of the King is keeping you from meeting the needs of the people."
"I could not agree more, Your Majesty", Tuhara agreed, "Constantly reporting the day to day activities certainly limits my effectiveness... er, the effectiveness of the Ministry."
The King smiled, then motioned for the Master of Ceremonies to strike the floor with his staff, an indication that the King was about to make a proclamation. The King watched Tuhara's face out of the corner of his eye as he said in a commanding voice, "From this day forward, the Ministry of Madregaism will cease to act as an underministry of the Crown. It will forewith be a separate entity from the Crown. Further, I charge the Madregaist Church with tending exclusively to the spiritual needs of the people, with all previous responsibilities over secular matters to be reclaimed by the King. From this day forward, the Madregaist Church and all its clergy members will be considered separate from the court of Cambuctu. Tuhara who has always served his country and King faithfully will be rewarded with the responsibility of Primate over all of Madregaism. He is hereby released from our service that he may serve the Gods as their messenger on Earth. May the Gods smile upon our words."
As the King spoke, he saw the color drain from Tuhara's face. For the King had successfully decreed that not only was the ex-minister not to have any further say in court politics and that the new Church would have no say in the running of the nation, but as Tuhara was truly a devout Madregaist (power hungry but devout), he would be much too busy organizing the Church to worry about succession within the Kingdom. The King adjurned the court and returned to his private chambers, chuckling to himself.
He and Queen Kalimansa busied themselves trying to alleviate the problem
of there being no heir to the throne. They were rewarded with a daughter
in year 32 and a son in year 33. Kalimansa had a miscarriage in year 34.
The King named Umme of Ghalam as regent for his young son should anything
befall Lasaka before the prince came of age. Umme had come a long way since
he had been captured in an attack on Ghalam many years before. From prisoner
in the dungeons to regent for the future King. The court intrigue in Mali-Wagadu
never ends.
