Lords of the Earth 34

The Dawn of Civilization

Year 66 - 70

Turn 16

Title for the turn:

“Where there’s smoke…”

GM notes:

This campaign is now under new management. So far it has been slow going due to real life events and my slow uptake on the Gm rules and playing with the Stats program and learning web site editing in a crude fashion. I make no promises about being faster as I still have a lot to learn and I'm sure Ill make my share of mistakes, I just ask that you all have patience.

Now on to the game stuff. I have a long list of stats to edit and Ill be taking the next two turns to get all of that stuff in order. An example of these would be projects that need to be entered into the projects section, things to be taken out, like cultivation projects, uncontrolled status regions to remove from the sheets. More importantly the account balances need to be fixed. Note: the next turn, turn 17 will be free of charge, so the balance issue isn't too big of a deal. I'll rectify it while I'm processing the next turn. Having said all that I'm sending out stats as is, since I don't feel that too many of the errors are catastrophic. Hopefully I've seen them all but if not I would be happy to get an opinion from you.

Now some other game notes that aren't in the game rules section, which I encourage all of you to read. Some of your leaders are in prison, some of you know where others don't, which tells you what you need to do. Some of you don't have prisoner tag on your leaders, that's another thing I need to address. Also if you have a imprisoned leader and you just don't want to bother rescuing him and you try to release him and let him rot then expect repercussions i.e.; your other non-royal family leaders may not look too favorably on the action and may just revolt. In other words I feel something like this would require a loyalty check. Same goes with letting a leader rot til he dies in jail. This one too a lesser degree as your leader may only have a few years to live from where he was captured.

I plan to use some of the other house rules from the original game. Some of the ones I like are the treaty rules, I like the idea that there are consequences to arbitrarily attacking a neighbor you have a trade route with etc... Also I may use the start up nation rules,  as of this writing we have only one nation open, so if someone wants to jump in somewhere else I would probably allow it. One thing I don't like too much is the port area rule. That one is out if you build a city on the water its a port plain and simple. No further action necessary.

So now that I have ran my mouth enough lets get to the turn. Its important to remember that Steve Bochenski wrote this entire fax except for the Africa entries and the last block of the Cuman. So if you have any questions about what may have happened and some of the notes on your stats feel free to ask, but it has been a year and I may not have written it.

THE EMPIRE OF THE SUN   (Asiatic Pagan)

Empress Ariko, the Eastern Star, Queen of Taiwan

Diplomacy: Taiwon (f)

The Empress Ariko, heart of the Empire, saw now was the time to flex the proverbial muscle of the Empire and set forth her nobles so that Empire would grow.  Prince Okida and Saga with Daimyo Tomochi and Takeda where dispatched to the Island of Taiwan to convince the error of their ways.  Though the Island had secured relations with the Kingdom of Wu, and dutifully sent their yearly tribute, the Nipponese just put on one hell of a show.  By 69, the Island of Taiwan broke from the Kingdom of Wu and joined fully with the Empire.

Though the Empress was overjoyed to hear of the success in Taiwan in early 70, she was concerned when her intelligent services would report the arrest and beheading of a number of malcontents in the region of Saga.   Such was the punishment for advocating revolt!

THE ANIMAL CLANS OF BO-HAI  (Asiatic Pagan)

Humble Ox, Regent for the Ruler of the Ox Clan

Diplomacy:  None

Open Position

THE JADE DRAGON  (Oceanic Pagan)

Emperor Shen Tzu

Diplomacy:  None

66 through 70 would be known as the “the year’s of Fire” as the Jade Dragon would attempt to implode with strife, betrayal, and intrigue.  As spring was in full swing, in early 66, the Empire seemed ready to expand by leaps and bounds, when the great Emperor Shen Tso would leave this earthly realm and journey to the next in the deep of night.  Word spread throughout the Empire like an unearthly fire. By the end of April Lord Jae Xan would declare himself Emperor, taking the region of Hwai, it’s garrison, and those forces under his command with him (some total 3,400 mixed infantry and cavalry, with an additional 450 sappers).  The regions of Kwichou, Anhui, and Taiping would also declare their support for the charismatic noble and break from the Empire.  The prince regent and heir, Shen Tuan, once receiving word of his fathers death would race to the capital with his honor guard about him, some 1200 light cavalry, in an effort to secure his thrown before Jae Xan could, with his forces, secure the seat of power for himself.

While men raced about the countryside Jae Fong, Xan’s younger brother, would face his own moment of testing.  Shen Tso, may his soul now rest with his honored forefathers, had commanded him to defend the capital from all those hostile to the Empire.  He held the Emperors write in hand, the local garrison would follow his command, it was a heady moment, fore could he not take the thrown for himself?  As Jae Fong looked out upon the Palace courtyard, with all 2,700 men from the royal garrison arrayed in their splendor, he knew, in his heart, what must be done.  His brother had brought dishonor upon the family name, and thereby all their forefathers.  He could not stand idly by, not with such at stake.  Jae Fong gave the command, the City of Tzu Lang, capital of the Empire, will not bow before his brother.  Shen Tuan was the rightful Emperor and, if it was within his power, then Jae Fong would see him upon the Jade throne.  Jae Fong gave the commands and the defenses of the capital where brought into readiness.

Shen Tuan, thankful that he had only been in Anhui when all this unpleasantness had begun, was able to reach Tzu Lang a month before his adversaries.  Jae Fong would bow before his rightful emperor and be at his side when the nobles and great merchants of capital would prostrate themselves before Heart of the Dragon.

Jae Xan, after negotiating a crossing of the Yangtze, would be a day’s march from the Capital when word of his brothers betrayal would reach him.  He would also learn of the Shen Tuan’s ascent to the Jade throne and the forces now arrayed against him.  Shen Tuan would give the command, Jae Fong would lead the Empire’s forces and go forth and those arrayed against him.

Jae Fong, new in his heart and from experience, that he was a better tactician than his brother.  He also new his brother would most likely drive hard and strong, minimizing in his own mind the threat that the fortifications about Hupei represented.  Jae Fong would then leverage these and lead his brother to his down fall.  With feints and bluffs, Jae Xan would be maneuvered into the worst of position.  Attempting to drive, and crush, what seemed a small force of light infantry, Xan’s forces would be caught in the open as 2,900 mixed cavalry, which had lain hidden amongst a grove a tress upon their flank, would charge forth, caching Xan’s forces unprepared.  In the end, Jae Xan forces where completely overwhelmed.  Xan’s head, along with the other nobles that had accompanied his forces against the rightful Emperor would be presented to Shen Tuan.

Shen Tuan would spend the rest of 66 solidify his control on, what was left, of the Empire.  Tuan’s brother Tzu, would return to the capital, after assuring the region of Jinagxi remained loyal.    Hunan, and their warlords,  would also remain loyal throughout.

In 69 fate would strike once more, as Shen Tuan, lounging before the evening’s entertainment (a juggling troop form Szechwan) would choke to death upon a small, salted, cooked doughy treat!  Jae Fong, hearing of the Emperor’s death, would shake his head saying “AGAIN?  You’ve got to be kidding me!”  Even, with no heir having been selected, the transition of power would be one of ease, compared to the trials and tribulations in 66.  Jae Fong, again, would play a pivotal role in securing the Jade throne.  After discussions with those in the know, it was decided that Prince Shen Tzu would ascend and secure the Jade throne for the Shen, thereby securing the continuation of the dynasty.  Jae Fong, with the Royal Guard, would secure the Empire and maintain the present disposition of regions and their loyalty.  It would be with a gasp of surprise that no additional regions would revolt.

THE JINN DYNASTY  (Asiatic Pagan)

Emperor Wang Xu-Jinn, Fourth Emperor of the Jinn Dynasty, Guardian of the

Forbidden City and Keeper of the Coral Throne

Diplomacy: Wu Hai (fa), Yanzhi (fa), Yun (fa), Bao Ding (ea)

The great Wang Xu-Jinn, as before, would not sit idle during 66 to 70.  Though he would remain in the palace, ruling as a wise Emperor was wont to do these days, especially due to the fact that his scribes could not keep up with the demands of the Empire.

Szu Shen-Do was dispatched on a whirl-wind-tour of Ordos, Wu Hai, and Yanzhi.  Conversations would go well in Ordos, and the “family’s” of the region where want to commit to the empire, the distance from the capital was too great.  Wu Hai and Yanzhi did not have that problem, for dispatches arrived, though intermittently, and the regions became allied to the Empire.

Shen Yuan was sent to Yan and then Bao’Ding to cement these regions into the every expanding Empire.  He to would experience success with Bao’Ding tying their economy fully into the Empire and Yun becoming an allied region as well.

THE SUBLIME KINGDOM OF WU  (Oceanic Pagan)

King Sui-Juen, the Beloved

Diplomacy: Fujin (f), Lingnan (f), Dai Viet (c ), Mison (c )

Continuing in the tradition of years past, the Sublime Kingdom was a bustle with the nobles conducting negotiations far and wide.  In 66 Lord Wai was involved in a freak Water Buffalo cart incident that would the man dead in the street.  In 67 Lord Man would join Wai in the here after, passing in his sleep.  Lord Chen Yuen would find success in his conversation with the influential families within Fujian, bringing the region fully into the Kingdom.  Lord Fu would, as well, find success with the region of Lingnan, as that region joined the Kingdom fully.

Early in 66, Sui-Juan made it official and took his eldest son Ming as Heir.  The pronouncement was expected, fore had not the dutiful son not prepared for the task before him?

In late 70 the Kingdom was shocked to see the regions of Dai Viet, and Mison revolt.  The distance from the capital would, in the following investigations, be found to have caused their departure.  The revolt of Taiwon was also a shock but for obvious other reasons.   “DAMN those Nipponese” was often heard about the palace after Sui-Juan was to become aware of the situation regarding the small island.

THE LAND OF THE GOLDEN LOTUS   (Oceanic Pagan)

King Siduna, God-King of Chola, Lord of the Golden Mask and the Emerald Throne

Diplomacy:  Madurai (f), Sri Lanka (a), Malabar (ea)

As was happening throughout Asia, the Golden Lotus threw off the sloth of years gone by and became a beehive of activity!  The Lord of the Golden Mask sent merchants forth and trade was established with nations far and wide (Java, Punt, Guar, and Indus).  Not only was the God-King busy, bringing the region of Malabar into the realm, but Lord Sahib Saj was able to accomplish the same with the region of Manduri.  Lord Sirdar Shotaya was dutifully meet by dignitaries for the nation of Punt and the transfer of the region of Sri Lanka occurred without mishap.  In fact, the Sri Lankan head family was overly please with their new allegiance and became a full ally of the Golden Lotus.

Sewers and fountains where built within the city’s of Vishnayagara and Travindaram.  Additionally, cultivation projects where continued within the regions of Chola and Pandya.

THE KINGDOM OF KHEMER  (Oceanic Pagan)

King Marfuss Alhamehli

Diplomacy:  None

The Kingdom of Khemer threw off the sloth it had suffered under for many years and the Kingdom was abuzz with activity.  A tremendous effort was initiated to cultivate all lands available within region of Phan Rang.  Effort was also initiated, in the same vain, but within the region of Siam.  Additionally, trade was initiated with the Sublime Kingdom of Wu out of Pacham.  All seemed to be going perfectly, when Marfuss received word that General Pang, in route to initiate negotiations with the region of Nakhon, fell off an elephant and broke his neck.  Marfuss was, as would be expected, not pleased.

THE CONCLAVE OF THE GANGES  (Oceanic Pagan)

King Saj, Rightful King of the Conclave of the Ganges

Diplomacy: Nasik (f), Kalinga (a)

The Conclave continued to experience prosperity as peace reigned for five more years.  The Kingdom continued to experience the spasmodic growth, as seen in years past, as Bombay, Patna, Calcutta, Dehli, Mathura, and even Kaunaj, the capital, all grew.  The King was pleased to see further lands put under the plow within Uttar Pradesh.  It was his hope to see all of Uttar Pradesh under the plow within his lifetime, but that was not to happen.  Late in 69, he would succumb to a summer cough.  The ascension of his son Saj would occur without due incident.  Once Saj had solidified his hold, in that same month, his son Saj the second, would be declared Prince Regent and Heir to the throne.  This was as expected, as the young Prince was greatly loved by the populace.  Once the announcements had gone forth, it was with no surprise that celebrations where seen to occur throughout the Kingdom.  It was often said, as cups where raised in the Princes honor, that the God’s looked well upon the young Prince and that he was destined for great things.

It would be with regret that old man Tinuri would pass on in 62.  Though the scribes about the palace would often wish him ill, due to his constant supervision, they would all morn his passing.

It was a pleasant surprise as merchants began to arrive from far and wide, frequenting the ports about the Kingdom (North African weavings where all the rage about the capital throughout 66).  Due to the region of Nasik fully joining the Kingdom, Merchants that had been risking their necks on the open sea’s, began frequenting the patrolled, and easier on the back side, road south to the Golden Lotus.  Both nations would see an increase in tax revenues from said trade.

THE GAUR NATION  (Oceanic Pagan)

King Sajvala II

Diplomacy: Samatata (f), Pegu (t)

King Sajvala II was busy as a bee, what with repositioning the Gaur military forces and convincing the region of Samatata to join fully with the Gaur Nation.  Advaita, Koonchai, and Rajit where dispatched to the region of Pagu for negotiations as they passed through Ava, they where surprised to hear that ruins of a buried city had been uncovered as farmers had been clearing jungle for farming.  As the three lieutenants of Guar took a break in their journey to explore the city, disaster struck when Advaita and Rajit where investigating a series of interesting carvings when the roof to a basement storage room they where standing upon, unbeknownst to them, gave way.   Thought the height of the fall was short, both Advaita and Rajit were getting along in age and would die due to complications.  After having the body’s encased in clay and shipped back to Merdic for a proper ceremony, Koonchai continued on to Pegu where conversations, though rough going, would end with an initial agreement of yearly tribute to be paid to Merdic.

Even with the unfortunate incident occurring to Adavaita and Rajit, people began to flock to the ruins interested in exploring.  The local constable was quick to establish robed off areas and secure the site.  The merchants where, as well, quick to set up stands to display their wares hoping to take advantage of the festival like atmosphere.  Dog “Tidbits on a Stick”®, sold by wandering merchants hawking their fare, became a hot commodity as the flow of tourist to the region only increased.

In 70, it was with great displeasure that King Sajvala II was to learn that the regions of Burma and Manipur revolted due to, a supposed, “distance from the capital”!  What where these peasants thinking!?

THE ISLAND KINGDOM OF JAVA  (Oceanic Pagan)

King Luito II

Diplomacy: Timor (f)

The Kingdom was inwardly focused as a great celebration was announced as the Royal family and the headman of Timor where to be married.  The grand celebration would occur in 66, with much fan fair and hoopla.  In the end, the two would enjoy a years peace before King Luito II would announce that his new son in-law would be the Prince Regent and Heir.  As the new prince was much loved by the populace of the Kingdom, this announcement caused another round of celebrations.  Needles to say, the punch vendors where doing a breakneck business!  With the 67 a baby boom occurred, due to the “celebration’s” in the previous years and the city’s of Kediri, Siriwuaya, and the capital all increased in size.

MIDDLE EAST

Mercenaries available for next turn:

Condotierri: 3xc, 2w, 1hw

QRs: c4, w4

Mercenaries hired for this turn:

THE KINGDOM OF INDUS  (Oceanic Pagan)

King Nahen, King of the Scythians

Diplomacy:  read the following

King Nahen had a number of goals this year and was not afraid to use his military might to achieve them.  While he would remain in the capital, attempting to understand what all this paperwork was really for, Prince Hasan and Farinallen where dispatched on a whirlwind diplomatic tour of Punjab, Und, and Afghanistan with some measurable response.  Lord Farinallen, having become a grandfather many times over, would catch a winter cold and die of fever while wintering in Afghanistan.

Near the end of 69, Prince Hasan would be entering Punjab, with his loyal retainer, when the winds of revolt would sweep throughout the Kingdom.  The recently won concessions from Und and Afghanistan would burn away as each region declared themselves independent and broke from the Kingdom due to their “distance” form the capital.

In 66 Lord Gorgin was sent to the west, with some 4,400 mixed troops, with orders to put the regions of Mand and Abadan under the yoke.  As Lord Gorgin moved into the region of Mand, Lord Farsad would meet up with him and, together, they would overwhelm the region of Mand, suffering light casualties.  With some 2,000 slaves in tow, Lord Gorgin and Lord Farsad would move through the region of Fars and fall upon Abadan.  Abadan would not fall as easily as Mand and Lord Gorgin would be enraged at the some 1,200 casualties he would suffers applying the yoke to the oh so deserving peasants of Abadan.  At the completion of hostilities, Lord Gorgin would move his sizable force into Fars, with Lord Farsad, and await the Prince Regent’s arrival.  Prince Nahenaren would arrive in short time, with a mixed force of 1,800 cavalry and a-foot, to take control of processing of the now 6,000 slaves.  The Prince would then turn about and began his return to the capital.  The march would come to be known as the “march of a thousand tears”, as the whips cracked and the oppressed cried out for salvation.  It would be all for naught, as the Princes forces would keep all moving in good order and arrive with little mishap.

THE KARA-KHATAI KINGDOM  (Asiatic Pagan)

King Orion

Diplomacy: Kush (a)

It was a cloudy day as the multitude gathered for the ceremonies to consecrate the Temple of Avrhaama.  As the final stone was laid, a great wind was felt by all, as a break in the clouds above appeared.  It seemed the very light of heaven shown down upon the temple and all arrayed about it.  It would be declared a miracle, of course, and the multitude would go forth spreading the story far and wide.  A great religious strength, un-before experienced, was felt within the Kingdom.

Though the rest of the Kingdom would remain quite, the negotiations with the region of Kush brought a new Ally into the realm.  Additionally, the royal postal network was extended to the port city of Baudar.

THE KINGDOM OF PERSIA  (Asiatic Pagan)

King Ardavan

Wise Lord of Persia, Creator of Light &

Destroyer of Darkness

Diplomacy: Diyala (t)

The Lord of Persia made great strides towards feeding the masses as all of region of Tabaristan was put under the plow.  To better secure the Tabaristan region a fortress was established, with port facilities,0 upon the Southern Caspian Sea.

Lord Kaspon was dispatched to Abadan for talks with the local chief.  The Lord would be as surprised as the local tribes when the Indus forces marched upon the region.  Lord Kaspon would barely elude capture and make it back into the region of Ahvaz with his skin intact.

Lord Gaspar’s efforts in Diyala would proceed with success as the region committed to paying a yearly tribute.  Lord Thargus’s efforts in Media, as well, would bear success as the region more fully adopted the “one and true” faith.

THE MONARCHY OF PATZINAK  (Asiatic Pagan)

King Alexander II

Diplomacy: Saksiny (a), Murom (pt), Cuman (c), Levedia (pt)

Alexander the second, throwing off years of sloth, harnesses the youth itching for a scrap about the kingdom, equips them, and then sends them forth under Prince Octavian.  The Prince gathers up the forces now arrayed (some 4,800 mixed cavalry) and set forth for the region of Murom arriving in June of 66.  Their orders are to take the region by force and then remove everything of worth.  Prince Octavian, expecting an easy campaign is surprised to find that the Murom chief, having watched the Patzinak’s actions over the last few years, is ready for them.  The battle ensues with the Murom forces outnumbered 2 to 1, but they fight for not only their lives but they believe for their loved ones as well.  The Prince, a man of no small intelligence, in a moment of forgetfulness is shocked to find himself outflanked by his enemies.  Seeming by shear will alone, Prince Octavian is able to realign his forces and counter the new assault, but the damage is done.  The Murom forces would fall, but not before dealing a telling blow to the Prince.  In what was expected to be a “light” engagement, Prince Octavian takes 800 casualties as his men proceed to loot and pillage all they can.  The Prince now turns his forces southwest and heads for the region of Cumon, arriving in August of 67.  Once again the Prince calls the charge and his men leap forth.  The Cumon again, are ready for them.  The Prince now has some 4,000 mixed cavalry arrayed against 2,800 cavalry and infantry.  Once again, though a light engagement is expected, things do not go as planned.  The Prince’s scout, having missed a large number of infantry hidden in blinds, are surprised as the forces meet.  In the end, the Prince would lose another 800 men in what should have been a simple engagement.  Once the regions where under the Princes control, they would take everything they could lay their hands on and enslave the population.  It would not be until March of 68, after wintering in Cuman, that Prince Octavian begins moving his forces.  From Cuman, the Prince heads south into Levedia.  In Levedia Prince Octavian meets up with Lord Julius who has been scouting the region ahead of his advance.  Leveraging his hard won intelligence, the Prince calls forth the charge and his men leap forward.  Prince Octavian is on his game though as his forces encounter the some 2,600 mixed infantry and cavalry facing him.  In a daring move, the Prince is able to flank those arrayed against him and win the field in short order, taking some 200 casualties.  By the end of September, 68, Levedia is stripped bare and Prince Octavian decides to winter within the region.  In March of 69 he rouses his forces and, under orders from the Crown, attacks west, across the Dnieper, into the KULU region of Atelzuko.  (Please see the battle of Verkhn’)

All the while Prince Octavian is frolicking about it, Lord Brutus is dispatched to the region of Saksiny to negotiate extending relations.  By the end of 70, the Lord would gladly dispatch good tidings as the local chiefs would ally with the Monorchy.

THE KINGDOM OF CARCHEMISH   (African Pagan)

King Asher

Diplomacy: None

No orders received.

THE ISLAND KINGDOM OF RHODES  (Oracle of Delphi)

King Agis

Diplomacy: Crete (f), Trieste (f)

The Kingdom of Rhodes took advantage of Europe’s focus elsewhere as King Agis dispatched colonist to Trieste.  The Island Kingdom had taken the prize and would now hold it.  As fortifications where quickly raised, and a sizable Rhodeian fleet remained to defend the harbor, a fleet of Troy was sighted in July of 66.  They would disgorge over 8,000 men into the city, dedicated to the Oracle, and prepared to defend Trieste with their lives.

The great Hero Philipedees, armor a’ kilter, would limp into Trieste in April of 66.  Wounds still knitting, and fever upon his brow, it would be a number of months before he was ready to answer his Kings call.  Once up and about though, the men under his command would exert every effort to fulfill his every command, fore was not this man blessed.  Had he not carried the will of the Oracle against the Bavarians and walked out, out of that meat grinder alive?  This was a man to follow, a hero!

While the defenses of Trieste where seen to, King Agis declared that the tribute from Carintia would no longer be required.  Additionally, the negotiations upon the island of Crete would end with that Islands full entry into the Kingdom.

THE KINGDOM OF TROY  (Oracle of Delphi)

King Theseus

Diplomacy: ouch!

Troy would do all she could to aid the Oracle, and her brothers, in the years ahead.  Lord Paris would take control of the fleet in Delphi, and with proper rudders, reach Trieste with a great mass of infantry enlisted by the Oracle herself!  Once Trieste was secured, Lord Paris would take his sizable fleet and head west into the Mediterranean waters.

Lord Agemenon, not a young man, would die in his sleep far from home in 67.  His negotiation, until that moment having progressed well, would be fore naught.

Lord Pericles would head to Bakony to see if trading rights might be attained and land set aside for said facilities.  His negotiations would go well, until the local chief looked at a map.  The distance was just too great from the capital and the headway was lost.  The local chief suggested, “bring your people, set up your new fangled “city”, and then lets talk!”  At the same time, all was not well in the eastern borders of the Kingdom.  Both Pontus and Abasigia would throw off the Kingdom’s hold and declare them selves free.

THE KINGDOM OF GREECE  (Oracle of Delphi)

Queen Delphinia Zecharias

Diplomacy: none

Open Position

THE ORACLES OF DELPHI  (Oracle of Delphi)

Oracle Jessica Fadon of Delphi

Diplomacy: Epirus (ch), Mansura (ch)

The great Oracle of Delphi, now with her vision cleared and blessed by the Gods, would spend this cycle upon the wheel in Delphi dispensing wisdom to the masses.  The former Prince of Rhodes, Justine, would go forth to Mansura to teach the true faith.  Not only would he further help those who would listen to find the true path but a Church was raised due to his efforts and ministry.  Helena Jafor, who most felt lacked the required discipline, went forth to Epirus to spread the faith.  Where most thought she would find deaf ears, it was with some considerable surprise, when dispatches arrived detailing that a church had been raised and that Helena had massed no small flock.

The Battle of Verkhn’

March of 69

In the March of 69 Prince Octavian, with Lord Julius as his second, attack into the region of Atelzuko with some 3,000 cavalry (2,200 light, 400 regular, and an additional 400 heavy).  As if expecting such to occur, Nicholas’s agents pick up the Patzniak forces as they crossed the river Dnieper.  Nicholas, now residing in Minsk with the full forces of the Kingdom at his disposal, upon receiving word of the incursion, recalls his son Ivanov from the negotiations just begun in the region of Kur.  After sealing a packet of orders for his Son, to be opened upon his arrival in the capital, Nicholas set’s forth towards Atelzuko in April of 69

May of 69

Prince Octavius, after crossing the Dnieper begins the laborious process of pacifying the region of Atelzuko.  Expecting no action by the Kingdom of United Lithuania-Ukraine, it is with great surprise that Prince Octavius’s scouts report a huge force of mixed infantry moving southward from their north.  The Prince, realizing his fathers blunder, orders the abandoning of the 2,100 slaves now under his control and begins a desperate retreat towards the Dnieper.  It would be too late as Nicholas II having already ordered his some 16,000 men of the KULU to shift southeast to block the Princes retreat.  The battle would take place near the settlement of Verkhn’ and be truly one sided.  Though the Prince was a better commander than his opponent, being out numbered almost 8 to 1 would be too great a disadvantage.  In the end he would be dragged from his mount, fighting to the end, and beheaded before Nicholas’s eye’s.  His head would be mounted upon a battle standard and paraded for all to see.  Lord Brutus, on the other hand, would receive a blow to his head early in the battle and would now take residence in a KULU prison cell.

THE KINGDOM OF UNITED LITHUANIA-UKRAINE (KULU)  (Druids of the Olde Gods)

King Nicholas II

Diplomacy: Novogorod (f), Veposkava (fa), Smolensk (f), Kirivitch (ne), Atelzuko (f)

While Nicholas II was off dealing with the foolishness on his southern border, the Prince Regent Ivanov returned to the capital to Rule in his fathers stead.  Queen Helga, would take a more active role in ruling the nation, with her son’s return to the Capital.  Upon opening the packet awaiting his arrival, the Prince Regent set about initiating a great many efforts.  No small amount of investments where made throughout the Kingdom, as well as, the city of Varena was established it the region of Lithuania.  Lord Boris’s achievements where overshadowed by his lack of diplomatic skill in Veposkava.  That being said, surprisingly the region remained loyal to the Kingdom.

Nicholas would remain in Atelzuko, to assure there would be no further incursions from the west.  Once a month had passed and it looked as though no further action would be seen within the region, Nicholas sent for his scribe,

“We have seen enough take these words scribe and let the world know how we shall respond”

The scribe scratched furiously at the parchment, catching his Kings every word, as Nicholas began to speak;

“The people of United Lithuania and Ukraine care not for the wars of some far off land. We stick by our allies, and will help protect the Forest Kingdom if they call upon us to aid them, for we value our honor above all else. Too, we are, one and all, loyal to the Great Druids, and will always be heartened by Druidic victories and the spread of our faith. But, we shall not fight when honor is absent, we shall not die for hubris alone, and we shall never break our word. We understand not the ways of the Southern Oracle-worshippers, and we pray to the Great Druids that they may see the error of their false ways, but we have given our word to them that war is not the manner in which we shall converse. Now, word comes from afar that Druidic and Southerners fight. But word also comes that this fight is over land, not the Gods, and is ill-wrought. And, thus, we will have no part of it. BUT, know ye this: we have pledged not only peace to the southerners, but also our honor to the well-being of the Druids and the peoples of the Forest Kingdom. We will not sit idly by if they are threatened with great doom. Thus, to both sides, we say: fight if you must, but sheath your sword before it gets beyond your control”

The message would be recopied and dispatched to those nations near far across the know land.  “By the Gods, let them read and take heed”, Nicholas was heard to say as the many packets where sent upon their way.

By the end of 70 the region of Atelzuko was singing the Kingdoms praises, what with Nicholas still within the region, and would fully commit their resources to his support.

THE UNITED TRIBES OF THE FOREST KINGDOM (UTFK)  (Druids of the Olde Gods)

King Duran, Ruler of the Forest Kingdom

Diplomacy: Latvia (f), Gorynth (ne)

The great King Duran’s first act, in 60, was to call forth his own scribes.  As did the great Bearsticker before him, Duran sent forth a message to world;

“Let it be known that Lorraine has been tested by the Earth Mother and found to be strong.  It is the test of strength that makes us all strong.  Whether it be by the harsh cold of winter, the ravaging beast that is time, or our own neighbors Lorraine has proven herself to be a force in the world and the Forest Kingdom respects that.  Let it be known that Westphalia is to be returned and all arms laid aside.

Hail brave Lorraine, favored child of the Earth Mother.”

All claims to Westphalia was rescinded and troops where removed as Prince Fagin, whom most thought had retired, was called back into service.  He would move his some 1,300 Light Infantry into Holstein where, with aid from the local peasantry, would begin to establish a strong defense.  Whilst the Prince Regent would rule form Lorian, the King would journey to Latvia and commence a dialogue with the region attempting to improve relations.  By the close of 70, his efforts would bear fruit, as Latvia would join fully with the Forest Kingdom.

In early 66 Lady Jodis, a member of the Druids of the Olde Gods, and tasked with aiding the Forest Kingdoms government, would fall ill and die.  It would not be till the end of 70 that a replacement could be found and reach the Kingdom.

DRUIDS OF THE OLDE GODS   (Druids of the Olde Gods)

Lilith, Gothrithar of the Druids, beloved of the Gods

Diplomacy: Poland (ch), Northumbria (mn), Sussex (ab)

Little did Lilith, Reverend Mother and beloved of the Gods, know that she would undertake the most harrowing journey of her life in 66.  She would leave Bavaria, heading west towards IL De France for a stop over to touch base with what she thought where follower of the one true faith, on her way to the region of Brittany.  She would narrowly miss a great army, some 23,800 men a foot, in the region of Burgundy.

The Reverend Mother traveling in disguise, and leveraging those still faithful here and there, she would reach Paris and experience the horror first hand of life under the yoke of the Cuman.  The pyramids of skulls of those vanquished upon the, now, fertile fields about Paris would stand tall before her.  Within the city, all signs of the druidic faith had been removed.  Where once stood the main house of the order within Paris, now stood an alter, with the open sky as her roof, dedicated to Averhaama.  She was appalled to see the roughly quarried stone was already stained crimson with the blood of those sacrificed to this unholy god!

Lilith, face as white as the bleached skulls about the alter would remark; “How could the Cuman, once such strong followers of the faith, have lost their way?  What had the order done, by the GOD’s have we done by sponsoring, and supporting this… this… this evil!”

Lilith would reach the region of Brittany by September of 66.  Seeing how the faithful had lost their way and renewed in her conviction, she would do all she could to stop what must not occur.  She would CRUSH the heresy before it could become a flame and sweep throughout the rest of Europe.  Empowered with her story of her experiences in Paris, Lilith would bring the region around, seeming by sheer will alone.

Holy Mothers Hvati and Aelfgigu would find their going far easier upon Avalon soil.  It would seem the story of Holy Mother Aelfgigu’s adventures would precede her wherever she would go.  The crowds would gather to hear her tell her tail of attain her quest and finding The Staff.  Though some would scoff at her tail, most would walk away with a new found fortitude in their belief.  With this in mind, it would be of no surprise to find a new Abby in the region of Sussex and an extended Monastery in Northumbria.

THE KINGDOM OF THE SVEAR (Oracle of Delphi)

King Ymir of Giantstock

Diplomacy: Uppsala (ea), Saarema (ne)

The great King Haakan, renowned for his military prowess recently demonstrated, would patrol the seas off the Svear coast looking for any trouble that fall upon his Kingdom.  His son, Ymir, would go forth to Uppsala and open a dialogue with the region.  By mid 69, he had hammered out an agreement for the region to ally itself with the Kingdom with, what was hoped, stronger relations to come.  Torkell Dark Eye would have his go at diplomacy upon the island of Saarema.  Though a crafty negotiator and know for this clarity with the spoken word, would not fair well upon the Island.  Those in the know, would say any lesser man would have not survived the negotiations at all!

After experiencing Svear hospitality first hand, King Hamis and Awliff of the Shetlands would be returned to the Kingdom of Alba without incident.

In mid 69, King Haakan would catch his death upon the sea’s and die before reaching shore.  The now King Ymir would race back to the capital to mourn his fathers passing.  The transfer of power, from father to son, would pass without incident.

The Forces Gather in Middle Europe

60, January

As the blanket of winter lay’s upon the fields of Swabia, the Bavarian forces are on the march.  Lord Bismark, with Lord Deitr as his second, lead a force of some 6,800 heavy cavalry into the region to aid in it’s defense against a possible incursion.

60, July

The Lorraine forces begin to move.  The Prince, and Heir, Aethelwulf lead’s a massive force of over 26,000 mixed cavalry into Alsace and begin establishing defensive positions along the border with the Bavarian region of Swabia.  As Aethelwulf continues defensive preparations with the mercenary general Andrew at his side, Prince Briann, in a daring move, takes command of 400 hand picked cavalry and begin working their way across the border, looking to scout out the Bavarian forces and, at the same time, avoid detection at all costs.

60, November

By the close of October Prince Briann is beginning to wonder.  He’s established and mapped the Bavarian forces, as well as the surrounding terrain.  The Lorraine forces are prepared to leverage this unique advantage, but before they can they must answer one question… where are the Cuman forces?

At about the same time, Lord Bismark is beginning to ask himself the very same question… where are the Cuman forces?

61, March

The Cuman arrive in Burgandy at the beginning of March.  With Gan-Chinua, Khan of the Cuman and King of France, at the fore of some 23,800 mixed infantry, the Cuman forces would arrive at the Rhine and… stop.  The Khan would then send forth his scouts into the Bavarian region of Swabia to see what they could see but would not move into the region.

Prince Briann, and a number of his scouts, would witness the exchange of pleasantries, food, and messages as the Cuman and the Bavarian lead scouts would meet and trade packets of messages.  The Lorraine’s Prince Regents concerns had been justified and his mission worthwhile.  Brian would spend April avoiding patrols and farmhouses before able to shepherd his 400 men back over the border into Lorraine.

61, May

Aethelwulf had planed for just such a message as Prince Briann would bring upon his arrival in the Lorraine base camp in Alsace.  Orders would go out immediately and the sturdy defenses abandoned, as the complete army would be withdrawn back into Lorraine where fresh defenses would be prepared.  The only incident of note would be when Athelwulf, while taking to saddle, would fall to his death (by a broken neck).  Briann, now Prince Regent and Heir, would take command of the Lorraine forces in the field and lead the withdraw into the region of Lorraine.

THE WARRIOR CLANS OF CUMAN  (Druids of the Olde Gods)

King Ajold, Kahn  of the Cuman, King of France

Diplomacy: Normandy (f)

Ajold, Khan of the Cuman and now King of France, would spend all of 66 securing his hold on the region of Normandy.  The negotiations would go so well that the region would fully join with the Khan.  In recognition of his skills and as reward for his efforts in the past few years, fore had he not proven himself as a able minded leader, Gan-Chinua would be designated as Ajold successor.

Establishing a line of succession would happen just in time as Ajold would fall ill in the winter of 66 and take to his bed.  By January of 67, Ajold would begin his great journey across the plains, as the circle life turned.  Gan-Chinua, Kahn of the Cuman and King of France would set a new tone during his rule.  Feeling that the past leader were too lenient and lacking in the moral and religious strength necessary in a leader, would take steps to change the very foundation of lands beliefs.  The faith, and priest, of the Druids of the Olde God’s where thrown out.  Dictates were issued stating that any Druid found within Cuman lands would be taken to the great alter in Paris and sacrificed to the one true god, Avrehaama.  Already the altar was stained a deep crimson with the blood of many of the Paris aristocracy who would not bow before the Cuman.  Gan-Chinua would also dictate that two pyramids, twice the height of a man and made from the skulls of those Parisians vanquished in the defense of their city, would be raised outside the main gates of Paris.  This was to be a message to all those that would enter the city of how the Cuman would deal with those who opposed them.

Gan-Chinua, not to remain lax, would dispatch Tverdislav south with a mixed contingent of some 13,500 infantry to deal with the region of Provence.  Gan-Chinua would take the remaining Cuman forces, some 23,800 mixed infantry, under his command and move west.

Tverdislav looks to have the most fun out of all the Great Khans men. He is tasked with taking his sizable contingent of mixed infantry and move to the south. His destination, Provence and its tiny jewel on the sea, Avignon. Tverdislav has only one objective, to ensure Avignon is erased from the world. The city being that it was of the smallest size gave in almost immediately to the host that was on the outskirts, then the Cumanis started having fun. The actual process of taking the city apart wasn’t very time consuming or difficult and the horde completed their mission without even losing one warrior. All the while never realizing that the Sicilians had moved most of the city dwellers out of harms way. When Tverdislav leaves to rejoin the main army that is in the north already the city that once was Avignon is just a smoking ruin. Fortunately for Tverdislav he is able to hold his mens anger in check, the take from Avignon sacking wasn’t even enough to go around. Once he arrives on station in Swabia and tells Gan-Chinua the news from the south, he finds that the Khans army has adopted a policy of watchful waiting.

THE KINGDOM OF LORRAINE  (Oracle of Delphi)

King Harold

Diplomacy: None

Harold, King of Lorraine, would return to his capital a tired man.  Once returned, he would grasp the mantel of Kingdom and begin to dispense justice.  As well, he would overlook the “books” as it where, keeping the Kingdom’s scribes honest.

At the same time, and after a private audience with the King, Lord William would depart the capital heading south and west into Alsace.  There he would exchange his horse and clothing for a garb more comely and, again, take saddle.  Those in the know would loose his trail as he crossed the border into the Bavarian region of Franconia.  Though he would not return to the capital by the close of 70, reports from the wayward Lord would continue to filter back to the capital.

It would be a bitter sweat moment as King Harold would bequeath the title of Prince of the Realm upon his son Dracus, as all would learn of Aethelwulfs death.  Dracus, recognizing the heritage of his family name, and all that it required, would stand proudly at his father side as the forces of Lorraine, under his brother Briann, now Heir to the throne, would ready their defenses.  “Let them come and test our metal, fore have we not proven ourselves the better already!”

THE KINGDOM OF BAVARIA   (Roman Catholic)

King Christian

Diplomacy: None

Christian, his convalescence over and healthy once more, would leverage the influx in taxes and raise a contingent of Heavy Cavalry to defend the Bavarian homeland as Lord Bismark would take the tested forces off to Swabia.  Lord Bismark, with Lord Dietr’s aid, would prepare fresh defenses leveraging the new fortifications going up.  In the end, the Lord’s confusion would reign, as the Cuman forces would fail to arrive.

In 66 while Eric, Prince Regent and Heir, was “touring” through the Munich market place with his honor guard in tow, would experience first hand the downside of being Royalty.  A bolt fired from a cross bow, seemingly from a nearby rooftop, or perhaps that tavern second floor window, would embed itself in the young Princes shoulder.  It would be with luck that the missile would miss vital organs/arteries and, though in great pain, the Prince Regent would survive the attempt upon his life.

Also of note, both Lord Khemet of the Kingdom of Punt and the Basil, Priest of Delphi, would again enjoy Bavaria’s “hospitality”.

KINGDOM OF ALBA  (Druids of the Olde Gods)

King Hamish

Diplomacy: Isle of Man (f)

With Negotiations having proceeded apace, King Hamish and Awliff of the Shetlands are released in 66.  Their homecoming is a tearful, joyous event.  Hamish, though internally disgusted at his recent experiences and damning the muse of war, is proud of his Son and how he has become a true leader for his people.  When Hamish’s time comes to take that final journey, he knows that his son shall carry on, not only his clans name with Honor, but shall lead the Kingdom of Alba with strength and fortitude.

With Hamish’s return, the Kingdom was abuzz as a great influx of merchant hulls where put to sea in the Scone.  Prince Kyle would journey to the Isle of Man, with a retainer, opening a dialogue.  The negotiations would go so well that the Isle would fully join the Kingdom right out!  What with the Green Tribe relinquishing all claim to the Isle, this was a good thing.

THE UNITED KINGDOM OF AVALON  (Druids of the Olde Gods)

King Oak, Ruler of the United Kingdom of Avalon, Protector of Portugal

Diplomacy: Dyffed (fa), Galacia (a)

Avalon would throw off it’s sloth and become a right whirling dervish, what with a massive influx of fortifications throughout the realm.  Almost every region would see some level of fortified way stop and guard post.  King Oak would spend five years in London, attempting to get the Kingdoms “paper work” under control, and do a fairly poor job at it I might add.  Though a personable fellow and well liked by all, he just wasn’t great with his “letters” as it were.

Lord William would go forth to the region of Dyffed and, though taking five years, earn strong commitment of support.  Lord Shakespeare, would venture forth to the region of Galacia, where, with the help of the local Baron, would bring the region fully into the Kingdom.  Lord Shakespeare would then venture onward to the region of Portugal where things would not go so well.  During a rather heated conversation, the Avalon Lord would “mistakenly” make reference to his counterpart’s mother.  Well, things just got right out of hand after that and by the time 70 would come to a close the region of Portugal would have revolted and then be re-pacified by Lord Shakespeare, who started the whole mess in the first place.

THE GREEN TRIBE  (Druids of the Olde Gods)

King Arthur

Diplomacy: none

King Author, after deliberation with the Kingdom of Alba, withdraws his forces from the Isle of Man and gives up all rights to said Island. In the summer of 66 a great revival would begin to occur as the populace of the nation banded together and, with great fervor, would put the plow to the region of Connaught.  Some would consider it a miracle that such a feat could be accomplished, but in the end, who’s to say.

By the end of 70, rumors begin to reach the Kings ear of a great rock deep within the forest of the Kingdom, much is speculated about the sighting.

THE KINGDOM OF LOMBARDY  (Roman Catholic)

King Odotheus

Diplomacy: Verona (a)

The Kingdom of Lombardy see a series of fortifications and revetments completed by the close of 70.  Additionally, negotiations with Verona had finally paid off as the region became a staunch ally of the Kingdom.  Verona would see an influx of troops as the Odotheus watched over the machinations afoot in Trieste.

Lord Teodorico, dispatched on a “errand” for the King would not surface again by the end of 70.  Many about the palace began to wonder if the charismatic noble man would be seen again.

Odotheus would stand proudly, during the summer of 68, as his son Octavio, now three, would be baptized.  Many would wonder how a priest was found, but he was and such an event would be marked on many a social calendar.  What with the events in Europe, let alone the former France, any moment of joy was looked upon as sacred.

THE ISLAND KINGDOM OF SICILY  (Roman Catholic)

King Axeres II

Diplomacy: Provence (t), Sardinia (f)

Axeres, being the cagey sort, knew an opportunity when he saw it.  Lord Palermo, the newly minted Prince Vicivius, and the Kingdom’s Corsican ally would venture to Provence and Avignon.  Conversations had started out with great fervor, seeing interest in extended relations on both sides, when the Cuman forces would come driving down upon the province.  It would be with foresight that the young Prince, a young man gifted with the way of words, would lead the Avignon merchants in loading as many of the populace of the small city as they could and depart safer harbors.  Lord Palermo and his compatriot would lay low in the outlying province, avoiding contact with the Cuman forces.  By such a show of will, or some would say stupidity, the locals would be willing to secure agreements between the Kingdom and them selves.

Rome would see a rebuilding of its defenses, long neglected.  As well, the region of, once the royal marriage was announced, would see a new fervor towards the Kingdom.

THE KINGDOM OF PUNT  (Oracle of Delphi)

King Falilkish

Diplomacy: Sri Lanka (un), Sabae (declared capital), Suakin (tànt), Adulis (ne), Petra (ea)

King Nasjish would spend the first year of the cycle doing and performing many things related to running the state. Nashish would ensure that Sabae would be the center of government for Punt, issue a proclamation handing over the region of Sri Lanka to the Louts nation keeping the new city within. Nashish gave the people of Suakin more autonomy, for which they were grateful. Then he started to ponder how he was going to rescue Khemet from his Bavarian vacation spot. One night while deep in thought he would stay up all night and when his retainers came forth to rouse him from his bed the next morning he would be found toppled over in his chair from a burst blood vessel in his brain.

Once hearing of his fathers demise, Falilkish would abort his attempts of talking to the tribesmen of Adulis. Falil would make for Sabae and take over in his fathers stead and arrange the funeral. Mani would be left behind to conduct the diplomacy in Adulis which would have a nominal effect.

In a more ambitious move Baki was dispatched to the region of Petra to open relations with the locals there. Using all the tricks he knew of and bringing gifts of cash the Petrans decided that they would like to open trade relations with this man from Punt.

THE KINGDOM OF IFE  (African Pagan)

King Bu 'wagu II, Lord of the Niger

Diplomacy: none

Torga while waiting for the young Crown Prince to come of age tried to restructure the religious laity in Ife. Unfortunately his efforts were in vain, the clergy and the people were happy with their present status and resisted Torga efforts to make Ife more secular. Once the Prince came of age there wasn’t really any question if Torga would hand over the reigns of power to the young man, Torga did the new King a favor and passed away.

Grotara took Torga’s orders to load up some ships and sail down the Niger to show the natives of Kafin and Kwarafara who was the true ruler of the Niger. With the intent of taking slaves on his visit, Grotara wasn’t paying attention to the river and one of his light ships ran aground on a sand bar and had to be scuttled due to the damage. When he arrived in Kafin there was no one to be found. In frustration Grotara packed up and went on to Kwarafara, here he had better luck, but due to the rough nature of the region and lack of built up areas slaves were hard to find. Grotara pressed on to Benin to unload his cargo of just 200 slaves.

(GM note: slave raiding a wilderness region with no regional PWB is probably a waste of time, even if it is a 2 GPv region.)

THE MADREGAIST CHURCH  (Madregaist)

Primate Tuhara

Tuhara moves west with the intent of strengthening the church in Takrur. Once in the region of Takrur proper he orders the abbey already there to be expanded, where he meets with success. Once that is completed he moves north to Gambia and Senegal, where oddly enough he tries to convert them to Madregaism, but he preaching to the choir as both regions are already part of the flock.

Bishop Haratu establishes a presence in Gambia then moves to Senegal to do the same thing his Primarch does, sadly they roll their eyes and listen quietly. Once his time in Senegal is through Haratu moves to Khalem, a truly pagan region. Unfortunately due to the small amount of time spent in country the effort has no effect on the natives. Haratu in his whirlwind tour of the West African area then moves all the way to Jos by way of the Niger River. Here again he tries to convert the natives to the flock. Haratu has some marginal success and a small contingent of the population does come around.

THE KINGDOM OF TIMBUKTU  (Madregaist)

King Lasaka Mansa, the Second

Diplomacy: Dogamba (ne), Zerma (ne), Garou (f)

Bishop Tutu is ordered to move south and begin talks with the regions that lie just to the south of the Upper Niger River. Sadly due to the lack of time spent on each of the talks nothing is gained or lost. Tutu returns to Cambuktu empty handed.

Lt. Dan, sensing that he is being sent on a suicide mission due to the fact he is to go into the desert and threaten military force if the Oasis don’t join the realm. There are a couple problems Dan has with this, first he isn’t given any troops to back the threat up and second there isn’t anyone out there to talk to. So Dan strikes out on his own vowing revenge on Mansa.

Meanwhile Lasaka Mansa attempts to fertilize his wife he is successful in the attempt but when he moves south to Garou he hears word that his wife has died during the birth, the child does not survive either. Mansa awaits the arrival of General Ngombo with good news, when Ngombo arrives he named heir to the kingdom. The festive mood sways the Garou leadership and they pledge full support to the crown. Once the ceremonies are over Mansa goes back to the capital and Ngombo moves south to Gorouol.
