TURN 17 is due Friday, 1 February 2002.

ANNOUNCEMENTS AND GM COMMENTS

Welcome to Lords of the Earth, Campaign 31! This is a game of empire building set in an historical setting. You will have the chance to control the rise and fall of empires through political, economic, military, espionage, and religious activities. Since this is an open-ended game, covering a span of centuries, you will have the opportunity to do pretty much anything you can imagine.

If you want to submit material for the Newsfax, either as "Mouthings of the Emperor" or as background material to help me write things up, by all means do so. However, I reserve the right to make necessary changes.

That brings us to the status and execution of NPN's and positions that fail to turn in orders. I will use my "best" judgment in these circumstances; if the players near this position are actively participating, then the NPN will be very passive, concentrating on PWB and investments. If the nearby players are not very active then the NPN will move out and try to DP the adjacent regions.

Some notes and observations from turn-8-15:

Good Luck to all!

- Dave Salter

RULES ERRATA AND REMINDERS

There have been significant rule modifications over the last two months to the basic rules, the renaissance rules and the GM rules. I believe they are stabilizing and by turn 10 I will be looking to incorporate most, if not all of these rules. If you want to get copies, contact Thomas Harlan as noted below. This is not an attempt to generate revenue for Thomas but an offer for you to get the new rules before they come into play and comment on them. Religious Orders and Merchant Combines will probably be affected the most.

For those Slave Raiders out there: two things will change for turn 12 -

1. The amount of slave nfp taken in a raid will be significantly lower than the past;

2. There is a chance, based on the leaders combat stat and number of troops conducting the slave raid, that the raid will fail, causing raider casualties.

Colonization: Any region that is cultivated or has been cultivated and is less than 2 GPV can be increased in value up to 2 GPV for the cost of 15 GP and 15 NFP per GPV of increase. Any named island can be colonized to 1 GPV.

Homeland colonization: any tech 6 nation can colonize their homeland to level 3 GPV, assuming its cultivated (and already 2 GPV) for a cost of 20 NFP and 20 GP. Any tech 9 nation can colonize their homeland to level 4 GPV, assuming its cultivated (and already 3 GPV) for a cost of 25 NFP and 25 GP.

A new type of ship can be constructed by tech-8 nations called a merchantman (code = m). It has the cargo capacity of a heavy transport and the combat power of a heavy warship. It costs 2 nfp and 6 gp.

You are allowed to build chains across narrow bodies of water like rivers and harbors (like the lords-0 Byz Empire). You can build a chain represented by a fortress (costing 10nfp 10gp) [stops all shipping but lw or lt] or a more serious version that cost 25nfp and 50 gp [stops all shipping] depends on size and magnitude. You can also combine a fortress and chain by adding the above costs to a standing fortress. This rule is a work in progress, subject to change as it is play tested by gamers.

Mercs: Countries can hire out their troops as mercenaries as long as they provide a leader to go along with them.

Holy Roman Empire: National regions inside the Holy Roman Empire need not be contiguous in order to maintain control over them, though distance requirements are still in effect - no further than 1/2 their tech level in action points away from their border.

Mercantile Combines: A Mercantile Combine can trade with interior countries provided they have at least a BO in a city of the interior country and can reach a port city with at least a BO in it. The BO in the interior country can be no further than 1/2 their tech level in action points away from that port. In addition, that combine can conduct trade for the interior country by allocating MSP to that route, indicating a level of transportation assets committed to servicing that route. This conduit will count as one conduit for overseas trade.

Effective turn-6: the cost for combines to establish their organizational structure is as follows:

A clarification to the rulebook: a combine can only handle one side of the trade between two nations. It is the responsibility of the combine to redistribute income from the routes handled for his clients. The combine will redistribute trade income received in turn 2 during turn 3.

Religious Orders: New status codes will be applied to religious orders. They are similar to Primate control statuses except they will allow for a slight increase in the amount of NFP generated. Also, the Religious Primate and a Religious Order (of the same religion) can maintain a status level in the same region or city.

The Duke waits for Ottoman, Scot or Danish attacks from Holstein in Westphalia, while he planned for contingencies in other areas.  (See Saxony) A deal with Aragon gave him control of Lyonnais.  Prince Paulo brought massive resources with him to woe the locals and to improve their living conditions - all this had an effect bought the results had not, as of yet, bore fruit.
Renaissance tech 9.

THE REPUBLIC OF VENICE

Renaissance tech 9.

THE KINGDOM OF NAPLES
Leonardo, Prince of Salerno

DIPLOMACY: None
Leonardo withdrew his forces to Liguria while sending Archero forward with a contingent to support his Iberian allies. The king was wounded by Florentine agents upon his return - clearly his efforts to stay out of the Florentine firestorm was unsuccessful.

In other news, Naples received a significant facelift with with multiple parks and water works being built.
Renaissance tech 8.

THE REPUBLIC OF FLORENCE  NNN
Alessandro de' Medici, Protector of the Florentine Republic
DIPLOMACY: None
Alessandro prepares a reception party for the Catholics, having some 25,000 dug-in troops.  In June of 1461, The Catholics launched their invasion, coming from Latium vice Romagna with 45,000 Venetians, Knights (St. Johns), Mercenaries and Papal troops.  Several assassin teams penetrated the Catholic camp, wounding the Pope - the lone event took 15,000 troops off the field.  Other attacks on the Venetian general were turned back by the generals personal guards.

The two armies met south of Florence on the coastal plains with the Hussites holding the advantage in leadership, cavalry and were fighting on terrain of their own choice.  The Catholics had a slight numerical advantage, but with the wounding of the Pope the overall quality of the Catholic forces were better than the Hussites, especial in artillery and the Knights elite heavy infantry.  The Florentines stopped two major attacks before being forced to withdraw back to the city.  Here the Hussites could hold them off for a long time since the city remained open to the sea.

On the night of 14 August, the Genoese garrison opened the gates of the city and within hours the city had fallen - so ends the Hussite fortress in the center of the Catholic beast.  Naples tried to occupy Tuscany and Florence but the victorious Venetians would have none of it.

Dobry, Duke of Lithuania and King of Poland
DIPLOMACY: None
Dobry reorganizes his defenses and prepares for a possible Catholic counter-offensive, apparently the Catholics were waiting on a renewed Hussite invasion.  Raids along the Dnepr occurred again, apparently from Iberian warships.  The Polish offer of peace with the Knights of Saint John went unanswered.  EO priests are moving throughout the country, raising the dedication to the Church.
Renaissance tech 9.

THE EASTERN ORTHODOX PATRIARCHY
Gregory, Patriarch of Kiev
DIPLOMACY: Bakony (ab), Atelzuko (ab)
Gregory strengthened his position in Bakony and Atelzuko but his efforts in Pest and Buda were stopped by local Hussite resistance.  Photius was sent into harms way on a futile mission and he failed to return.  Other missions were more successful.  The Patriarch made the following statement:

"We regret the action that was forced upon us. We were quite happy to live with our neighbors in peace but now that is no longer possible. Syria's action of attempting to enslave those of the Eastern Orthodox faith was a grave insult to our religion. We cannot stand by and allow any members of our faith to be oppressed. With that in mind and with the help of others who follow our faith we have set out to protect those of the eastern orthodoxy that are subject to Syrian oppression. Again, we regret these actions but all we seek is to keep our people safe."

With that statement he sends Ireneus south to assist in the reoccupation of historic Orthodox territory..

THE REPUBLIC OF NOVGOROD
Pyotr
DIPLOMACY: Kymia (drops to nt)
Pytor again increased the cultivated lands near the capitol. He invested heavily at improving the vitality of this new land. He made a deal with the Hansa for Vaasa.  The Patriarch has lost all influence in Novgorod.
Renaissance tech 9.

THE PRINCIPALITY OF MOSCOW
Ivan IV
DIPLOMACY: None
Ivan and Countess Rebecca Adellovna enjoyed the Russian heartland, ignoring much of the world around them. Ivan is still considering the Mongol offer to reduce the annual tribute - while he considers, none is sent.  The region of Tver saw an increase in population due to a burgeoning fur market.
Civilized tech 7.

THE KHANATE OF THE OF THE JUDEAN EMPIRE OF THE GOLDEN HORDE
David, Khakhan of the Judean Empire of the Golden Horde, Darighachi of Crimea, Gurkhan of the Kipchak, Beloved of Yahweh
DIPLOMACY: None
The Khakhan woke in slow motion.  The tent was alive with activity, lamps lit, the sound of women yelling and a peculiar high squeal that seemed barely human.  He scrabbled at the scabbard hanging from the gilded yurt post, eyes partly open, vision blurred.  The sound of his grandfather's ancient blade against metal coincided with clear sight, and his rising head swung around looking for assassins and scenes of battle.

Svetlana and her chambermaids were huddled together at the foot of the bed, arms waving, cloth flying, struggling with someone – or something.

David, Emperor of the New Judah, shoved himself in their direction with a shout, his long straight Persian cavalry sword waving overhead.  He caught sight of bare flesh.  Too late to duck, he took the full stream of urine in his face.  The long  blade had caught the canopy rope, parting it as a spoon parts yogurt, and the heavy fabric collapsed on top of the Emperor, Queen, maids, and a very loud, very messy, and very delighted baby.

Thus was begun the campaign against the Demonic Austrian Khanate.  Whether the omens were favorable was a topic for active discussion among the Imperial chaplains.

War is officially declared on the Austrians.  To an assembly of the nobility, the Emperor declares that perhaps there is little to be done against such a powerful and evil betrayer lodged in a distant land.  Nevertheless, the honor of the royal family and of all loyal Judeans requires a price be exacted, and the cost must not be counted.  The Horde began to move west and then northwest into the Polish western marches with over 15,000 men.  From there they set out to exact retribution upon the Austrians.  The Khakhan, himself, led raids into Silesia and Meissen, while his noted general, Menachem of Saksiny, raided Moravia.  These raids were essentially unopposed because fearful of a stronger offensive by the Hussites, the Austrians had pulled their main army back to Bohemia to protect the Austrian heartland.  A good thing for them for Prince Igor of Suvar debauched with 3,000 cavalry into Carinthia, ravaging that province before moving north into Austria, itself.  The Austrians were concerned enough that they asked the Venetians, reinforced with mercenary troops, to react to the raid on Austria.  After causing some damage, the raiders were chased away and were last seen heading to Carinthia and points east.

Some Jewish refugees have gathered with the Khakhan in Bochnia, trying to escape the Christian mess in Central Europe.

Renaissance tech 9.

SERB-HUNGARIAN EMPIRE
Phillip I, Emperor of Serbia and Hungary
DIPLOMACY: None
The Serbs boldly moved into Anatolia to support their Orthodox allies under the command of Prince Aleksandar, who had recently been elevated to Prince of the realm. (See Syria) The Serbs got a lot of military training support from the Greeks and Athens received extensive wall fortifications.  A cultivation project was started in Croatia
Renaissance tech 9.

THE THRACIAN REPUBLIC
Constantios, First of Thrace, Savior of the East
DIPLOMACY: Trbizond (drops to un)
Constantios orders two major raids against the Syrians as well as a coordinated attack with his Serbian allies.  He led the coastal raid with a mixture of 80 various warships.   He sent Theodore on a wide sweep through northern Anatolia into the northern provinces of the Emirate.  The surprise came upon his return when he reported the Christians of Cappadocia and Vaspurakan had been enslaved and apparently taken south to Syria.  He also reported that the Rum army had occupied Paphlagonia and then the bulk had pulled back to Pontus.

Auxitius was sent to Bithnia to join the rest of the Orthodox forces to launch their counter offensive against Syria with 14,000 men. (See Syria)

THE SYRIAN EMIRATE
Abdul-Salaam
DIPLOMACY: Betisimarsaka (c), Q'arum (some effect), Hova Merina (nt), Merintha (c), Mahabo (nt), Edessa (drops to un), Arbiliq (drops to un)
The Emir orders the renewal of attacks of the Greeks in Bithnia and Lydia and the enslavement of the Greeks in Cappadocia, Vaspurakan and the city of Amasya.  These latter operations were carried out by the Emir, himself with some 5,000 cavalry, leaving the regions depopulated and refugees streaming westward.

The great general, Aabul Khayr was given the task of capturing Smyrna and then moving on to Bithnia.  He started out with 10,000 troops, the majority heavy cavalry backup by heavy artillery.  The siege of Smyrna was concluded by the end of 1461 and Aabul waited for reinforcements from Tunisia before continuing on to Bithnia.  He timed his advance to coincide with the movement of Baha Fateen through Bithnia.

As he crossed into Bithnia, his scouts returned with word that the Greeks and their allies lay ahead and numbered over 30,000 men.  He never even considered a withdrawal, such was his distain for Greek arms.  However, he did send for Baha Fateen to join up with his 5,000 elite Guard.  With the 11,000 Tunisians, he would have just about 25,000 troops, which should be enough to handle the shaky Christians.

The Greeks were led by Prince Aleksandar, who had just moved into Bithnia with Orthodox reinforcements from Serbia and the Patriarch himself.  The Greeks were strong in artillery and had picked the terrain for the battle.  The Syrians had the advantage in cavalry and had a good sense of the Greek disposition.  Aabul recognize the Serbian wing and decided to crush these fools first.  He gave the honor to the Tunisians who were decimated by the Serbian artillery.  After several futile charges, Aabul sent in the Guard who did hit the line with devastating force, but they too were forced to withdraw after suffering sever casualties.

The Syrians were spent but the Greeks were unable to launch a pursuit do to their own heavy losses.  The Greeks did manage to follow several days later and moved into Lydia and Smyrna.  The campaign ended near the mountain passes leading to Isauria.

In other news, the Emir learned of Greek raiders ravaging his coastline (though forts in Aleppo kept the damage to a minimum) and northern outposts (in a separate raid) and attacks against his intelligence organization and his administrative facilities.

Hassan Bey
DIPLOMACY: None
Hassan slowly expanded his holdings in the Middle East..
Renaissance tech 8.

EMIRATE OF RUM
Jehangar
DIPLOMACY: Trebizond (t)
Jehangar continued his efforts to eject the Greeks from Trebizond - this time Aragon ceded their control of the port. The Emir offered his brother, Ahmad, mantle as heir. Not only that but he gave him the bulk of his army and sent him west to wrest Paphlagonia from the Greeks.  The move westward was punctuated by frequent pauses to try to determine Greek reaction - fortunately, the Greeks were tied up trying to deal with the Syrians. By the fall of 1462, they had taken control of Paphlagonia and initiated a forced conversion of the Eastern Orthodox population.  A more subtle approach was used in Pontus and Trebizond.
Renaissance tech 8.

Central Asia

THE SAFAVID SULTANATE
Ismail
DIPLOMACY: None
Ismail ordered the cities of  Khiva and Samarkand enlarged, while continuing the cultivation project in Tabaristan.   A postal road was built from the capitol, through Bactria, on to Transoxania.  Some small amount of gold was received from the Khalifate and minor improvements made in the capitol city.

The city of Parapavura finally fell to a passive siege. Imran, leading the 10,000 troops that were sent to India to fight the Hindus, caught the ambition bug and staked out a piece of the pie for himself. (See Safavid India) Although he still claims allegiance to Ismail, he is for all practical purposes, independent.

DIPLOMACY: none
The Sultan ensured he had enough forces to retake Kalyani while he deployed the remainder of his army to forestall a Hindu counter-stroke.  Allah blessed him with a son in 1463.
Civilized tech 7.

THE SULTANATE OF JAUNPUR
Begarha II
DIPLOMACY: Jihjhoti (f)
The Sultan, always the opportunist, reinforced his general, Tetoa, with some 6,000 infantry and seige troops.  He ordered him to take the Hindu city of Tonajara and move on the Orissan homeland.  An easier tasked could not have been found, the city was walless and the Orissan army was in the north facing the Bengali.  With the fall of Vengi, the remaining Hindu provinces became independent.  Progress continued to be made in change the very structure of the Sultanate's society and economy.

THE SULTANATE OF BENGAL
Momathd
DIPLOMACY: Chandela (f)
Momathd, still wary of further Hindu assaults, gathered his forces to defend the homeland, while his agents went in to action.  Mercenaries were hired to shore up the defense of Palas - then just after the Javanese had evacuated the region, they swept into Samatata, crushing all resistance.  Other agents worked on the Orissan garrison of Nadavaria, allowing the locals to regain control when the Hindus moved south.

Mossa was again ordered to carry out raids against the Hindus in Orissa, though there was not much to raid as that country fell apart under repeated blows.  The Chandelan ally was married into the royal house which brought that region fully into the Sultanate.

In the spring of 1462, a large force of Persian knights arrived to help liberate Nadavaria; itching for a fight and seeing they were not needed in Nadavaria, they headed south into the ruins of Orissa.

THE VIJAYANGAR EMPIRE
Vasuman
DIPLOMACY: None
Samarajya caught the Moslems unprepared for his counter-stroke as they were scattered throughout the countryside in an effort to militarily convert the populace to Islam.  He hit them outside of Kollam with over 25,000 troops, mainly cavalry backed up by artillery.  He faced about 12,000 Moslems who were forced to regroup before they turned to block his approach.  The Moslems were better led and had higher quality troops, but the initial poor position and the weight of numbers finally told the tell.  The remnants of the Moslem force were seen fleeing for Chera with the Hindu army in pursuit.

Upon arriving in Chera, Samarajya found the Khalifate's troops in the process of sacking Calicut; again the enemy's initial disposition favored the Hindu army.  In a sharp engagement, the Moslems were sent toward Malabar and the safety of the Syrian shield.

Samarayja returned to Tanjore, victorious only to be shocked by the deaths, apparently from a local outbreak of the plague.  The Emperor went into mourning just to fall prey himself.  Vasuman, who had acquited himself well in the recent battles with the Moslems, took the mantle of Emperor.

Civilized tech 7.

THE MAJAPAHIT KINGDOM OF JAVA
Dapapuru, Nirguna, King of Java
DIPLOMACY: Sabah (f0, Sarawak (a)
The fight had been hard-pressed and valiant. The offensive in the east had relieved pressure on the kingdoms of India and preserved that beacon of Hinduism in Samatata. But the wounds had been many. The tentacles of war had even reached into the domain of Darapuru. Too, the tenor and scale of the conflict had changed.

The king contemplated those things with ill-disguised concern. War and conflict now spanned the Indian sub-continent. Violence had been done upon the people of Java in their home. Clearly, what had began as a religious response to the call to succour fellow Hindus had spiralled into an intense political conflict. Such developments placed a heavy burden on Darapuru. His kinship with his co-religionists was strong, yet the changing military scene required a thorough reassessment of how best Java could stand the course of what would be a drawn-out, protracted conflict. Gone were the hopes that Java could make a speedy return to the peace and prosperity earlier enjoyed. In their stead appeared a grim determination to prepare the nation for the long struggle ahead.

The king acted with his customary decisiveness. Despite the many advocates of continued offensive operations, Darapuru ordered many of his forces to return home for refitting and reinforcement. Too, the scattered garrisons around the domian were summoned to the heartland. While the remaining forces in north-east India dug in to preserve the Hindu foothold there, Javan endeavours focussed on bolstering its forces to the level necessary to act decisively. Too, the destruction wrought by the Muslim raiders was made good and the economic power of the nation further enhanced. Together, these would combine to ensure Javan actions struck not with the bite of the mosquito, but with the venom of the cobra.
