Khan Bleda
Diplomacy: none
Khan Batu Gan, leader of the Mongol tribes, was sitting in his tent, planning his next move on how to continue his father’s dream of conquering and ruling all of China. He called on all his advisors, and they suggested that he prepare a defense perimeter of field forts, as the Hu Empire would move to try and remove the Mongols from Hupei. The Khan liked the idea, and ordered 4000 horse archers to dismount and help all his spare and hired men to build 40 of such structures (albeit poorly constructed compared to their Chinese counterparts). As the construction began, Batu Gan stepped out of his tent to inspect the progress, when all of a sudden, an arrow struck him in the back. His bodyguards, shocked at the precision of the arrow, quickly secured the area and returned the Khan to his tent. Batu was seriously injured, and would need the help of the best doctors to survive. In a nearby town, a man by the name of Zhuge Shao was renown for his medical expertise. He was rushed to the Khan’s tent to save Batu from certain death. After inspecting his wound, Zhuge Shao gave Batu a special ointment that would heal the wound. The ointment immediately alleviated much of Batu’s pain, and it seemed to have slowed the bleeding a great deal. Zhuge Shao was thanked profusely and paid handsomely for his efforts, and quickly made his way back home. However, unbeknownst to the observers, the ointment was laced with a poison, and Batu Gan died that night in his tent. Enraged, Batu’s bodyguards rushed to the home of Zhuge Shao with vengeance, but the doctor was nowhere to be found.
Now, the Mongol Khanate was in disorder, with no viable Mongol Heir. Bleda, Khan of the Bulgar knew the Mongol warriors rejected the idea of being led by a woman, but knew that they would not follow him without some sort of legitimacy. As a result, Bleda quickly took Mongke Erdene, daughter of the late Mongol Khan, Margun, as a bride, and proclaimed himself the new Khan. Mongke decided not to object to this idea as she had a knife to her throat during the proposal. However, Qara Enq, a general of the Mongols, did object to Bleda’s leadership, but lacked the ability to convince the warriors to follow him. As a result, he was killed for his ambition. Bleda had a formidable reputation as a warrior and a leader, and the Mongols eagerly accepted his leadership.
The new Khan had little time to rest and enjoy his new post. He had to quickly organize his now massive horde to defend against invasion. The Hu Empire was determined to drive the Mongols from their territory, and had enlisted the help of mercenaries and the Shaolin Monks. Khan Bleda had a difficult time organizing such a vast cavalry force of almost 90,000 troops, but managed to get them to surround the many field fortifications and await the Chinese onslaught.
The Hu and the Shaolin had between them well over 50,000 troops, including the mercenaries, almost all of which were on horseback, and many of which were hardened veterans. With the advice and ability of 5 General and Military Advisors between them, the Chinese Alliance launched a concerted and well-planned assault on the Mongols in the spring of 637. They managed to do a great deal of damage to the disorganized Mongol defenders, charging the battlefield with desperation, but the sheer size of the Mongol horde, and the constant barrage of the fortifications took their toll on the Chinese. Both sides sustained heavy losses, and the Mongols withdrew behind more field forts to recover from their wounds. The Chinese Alliance decided to regroup and rest their wounded and exhausted soldiers before launching another offensive in the summer. This time, the Mongols were a bit better organized, with Khan Bleda now having a more manageable force to command, was able to hold his ground against the Chinese offensive. Once again, both sides sustained heavy casualties, but neither side was about to give up on the battle. The Alliance would now wait until the fall to launch their third attack to liberate Hupei. However, Chinese troops were starting to show the signs of battle fatigue, and the generals knew that if they couldn’t secure victory before the winter, they would likely have to retreat and rebuild their army, as this war of attrition was starting to favour the Mongols. Indeed, the Alliance sent their troops in with their best tactics, but was matched in their skill and ferocity by the Mongol troops, and once again, the Mongols held their ground. In the end, the death toll was staggering. Approximately half of the Mongol horde was killed, and nearly two thirds of the Shaolin and Hu troops would not return to Hubei to fight another day, including the Shaolin Monk Hoi-Sung. Although the Alliance can hold their heads up high since more Mongols were killed than Chinese, Hupei remains in the hands of the Mongol Khanate.

Many cities were expanded and several royal roads were constructed, as well as public works built.
Lord Eshasulu took up the task of diplomacy in Burma, securing a feudal ally relationship with the region. Lord Narumi stayed in Melindara and was able to secure tribute from the city. Priest Khuderbha was sent along to Gujerat, where he could only secure free passage in that region.

Emperor Sabatai
Diplomacy: Frunze(nt), Kuldja(ea), Kashmir(f)
Emperor Sabatai, frustrated with the recent inactivity of the Kara-Khitai Empire, decided it was time to shake things up. Massive resources went to changing the organization of society from Caste to Clan, and the project was nearing completion as citizens of the Empire were starting to get accustomed to the new way of life. In addition to the societal upheaval, economic change was in the midst as well. The agrarian nature of the empire lent itself to readily to being open, and with the guidance of the Emperor and massive subsidies, the change was fully enacted. In addition to the various subsidies needed for the economic change, Sabatai also ordered the completion of the Kashmir cultivation project to ensure happiness among the many farmers in the Empire. The Emperor sent Prince Orku, Prince Baku and Lieutenant Jabq on diplomatic missions, all of which were successful, especially Orku’s in Kashmir. It was certainly an exciting time in the empire, and there was also much rejoicing as Sabatai and his wife gave birth to three healthy children, two boys and a girl. The only bad news in the empire was that several deaths shook the royal family, including Prince Orku and Sabatai’s mentor Lieutenant Hagatia.

Diplomacy: Kophat Dagh[Merv(t)], Bauluch(n/e)

The same cannot be said for Prince Vahman who was sent to Bauluch to improve relations there. It is said that Vahman’s lack of tact would have got him killed if the region’s governor wasn’t a kind man who overlooked Vahman’s shortcomings and ignored his pleas.
With Emperor Zarmihr enjoying the countryside, and playing the diplomat, Prince Mihr had to forgo his studies to rule the empire. He oversaw the construction of two new cities, Vashir in Kash and Heraat in Firoz Kohi, half of a Royal Road to improve trade with the Gupta, irrigation in Afghanistan and wall defenses in Kabul and Gwatar. In addition, the Empire became essentially religionless except by name.

Grandmaster Alverius
Diplomacy: Agoruvix(op), Tuscany(oh)
Grandmaster Sotutor received a letter from the Kingdom of Kanem requesting their help in bringing Akan, the Lords of the Gold Coast, to justice. The letter said something about spies and infiltration, it had obviously been written with fury and haste. Sotutor, disgusted with the idea that another Coptic nation would spy on another decided to send in a massive force to punish Akan for their alleged crime, without even verifying these claims. Brother Magius was sent far south to fulfill this task. He took a mixed infantry army of 18,000 men, composed of one-third elite, one-third light elite and one-third light. Magius was ordered to take control of Yoruba to prepare the way for the invasion from the Kingdom of Kanem. Magius had no trouble taking control of the region, and had accomplished his goal. Brother Maurelius was also sent south to defend Kanem-Bornu in case anything went wrong.
Meanwhile, everything else with the Order was going smoothly. Brother Alverius founded an Order Preceptory in Agoruvix, and Brother Sebastianus founded an Order House in Tuscany. That is until the year 640, when Sotutor passed away. The Order itself was not shaken by his death, and Alverius became the new Master of the Theban Legion. However, Brother Magius always had doubts and regrets about joining the Order of the Theban Legion, and now, being so far away from the Order, and commanding a large and powerful army, he decided he’d had enough of the Order and decided he would make the newly conquered region of Yaruba his home. Thus the Kingdom of Yaruba was born.

The Christian Church of God – Arian Christian – Civilized – Tech 4
Patriarch Marsden
Diplomacy:
Patriarch Marsden told Osander, who was already in the city of Palermo, to raise an army locally, and to draft and deliver a letter to the new King of Sicily.
The Christian Church of God cannot condone the breakaway of factions calling themselves the Italian Kingdom of Sicily. We however are not without compassion for their feelings on independent rule and local autonomy.
Since such a small island kingdom would be unable to defend itself against Coptic, European and Islamic threats and since it finds the yoke of Vandal rule to be oppressive, the Church is willing to step in and allow Sicily the best of both worlds.
It will become a region and city under direct church rule. The current authorities will continue to run the daily workings of the region and city including its governing laws. The Vandal Empire has already agreed to allow the church unrestricted reign in regards to the solution of these regions and cities. It further agrees to continue to provide the protection of its national armies to any threat to the region and other the harboring for their fleets will avoid stationing any national troops except in time of war leaving security to the church.
In short the Italian kingdom is not seen by the church as viable or legitimate, it does not even tithe the church and wishes to take the regions government overthrow peaceful assumption of power and a signed abdication of the rebellion leaders in exchange for a dropping of all charges and positions of responsibility in the community.
Needless to say, the King scoffed at the idea, and was offended by the audacity of the letter and the unusually high degree of diplomatic incompetence. In fact, even the newly conscripted soldiers were befuddled by this move.
The Sicilian King feared the worst and began preparations for war. However, he soon learned that Osander fell ill and perished. As a result, the Sicilian King took a chance to try and convince the soldiers to join his cause and help defend his island kingdom, once word arrived from Vandal sailors that the Church was being less than sincere, and had fully intended to return Sicily back to the Vandals. As luck would have it (either that or a silver tongue), about two third of the leaderless troops decided to defect to the Sicilian Kingdom, on the condition that the King promises not to initiate hostilities against the Arian Church or its followers.

Master General
Diplomacy: none
King Mawuli spent many resources to conscript many new troops for his army. King Muwali was absolutely enraged, some say to the point of madness, that King Can Frou of Akan, would send spies into his Kingdom of Kanem. He was heard saying, “Can Frou was supposed to be a friend and an ally, how could he betray me like this? He will pay for his treachery!” So he took an army of over 21,000 mixed infantry troops, and marched them straight into Akan. There he surprised Can Frou and his small regiment off troops.
Can Frou was absolutely surprised by this incursion, and could not figure out why King Muwali would betray their friendship and attack. Can Frou quickly realized that he was out numbered on the battle field and tried to withdraw into Akan city. But alas, it was too late, Muwali’s army stormed the region, and with no fortifications of any kind, the two forces engaged in battle. To their credit, the vastly outnumbered Akan troops fought valiantly and managed to do some damage to the Kanem troops, but it was a hopeless battle, and Can Frou’s Army was annihilated. Can Frou himself was captured and brought to Muwali’s tent.
Muwali sceamed at Can Frou, “You filthy dog, how dare you infiltrate my nation with your spies!”
A genuinely perplexed Can Frou replies, “What are you talking about? We have sent no spies to Kanem. Is that why…”
“Liar!” Muwali thundered, cutting him off. “I will cut off your head myself!” He says as he draws his sword.
“But wait! Please listen, you are making a mist…”
But before Can Frou can finish his plea, Muwali beheads Can Frou’s with one fell swoop. Then he turns to his generals, who are a bit shaken by the vengeful madness that has consumed him, “Loot the entire countryside, and kill anyone who resists, Akan must pay for this!”
The generals took their troops and brought back untold sums of riches to Muwali. Muwali told his generals to put all the treasure into his chests, and then do the same to the city of Akan, burning it to the ground when finished looting.
However, the generals protested, “But King, won’t you allow the troops to keep at least some of the spoils? After all, looting is hard and difficult on the moral of the troops.”
Muwali didn’t even reply, just gave an angry stare at his generals. The generals quickly realized that Muwali was not to be reasoned with. No, they would have to act to betray their King before he brings about the ruin of the entire Kingdom. Upon hearing about the madness and selfishness of the King, the troops and generals mutinied and stormed Muwali’s tent at night, killing him and all his leaders and government officials.
One of the generals proclaimed, “Men, we must now return to Capital. The King and Prince Zambuku are dead, we have taken this road, and now we must continue.”
And continue they would. The army returned to Ngazargumu, and captured Jimi, and the remaining royal family and imprisoned them. The lead general proclaimed himself the new Ruler of Kanem, and surprisingly enough, the Kingdom accepted this new dictatorship.

Emperor Heraklios continued putting all his energy to getting the empire back on its feet. Well, alright, not all of it, after all, he did venture off to visit the Comes of Dacia Mediterranea, marrying a lady of the House. Upon his return to Constantinople, he and his new wife would often retire early in the evenings, which happily yielded two healthy sons. However, Heraklios did pay off the other half of the defaulted loan, expanded the city of Thessaloniki, built the city of Athenos in Attica, and the port city of Pherae in Thessaly. Further, seeing as how the Empire cannot stand unless it is united and wealthier, he sends forth his princes and lieutenants to bring the allies of the region closer with success in Dardnia and Heraclea. Unfortunately, he also sent his diplomatically challenged generals on several diplomatic missions. Leviticus was ineffective in Epirus and Kluj, while Theodorus managed to insult both the Comes of Dacia Med. and Meosia to the point of them deciding to withdraw their military support of the empire before he died.

Isbert’s younger brother Ivanhord was also never heard from again after taking a light cavalry army into the steps to gather more slaves. Rumors have it that Ivanhord’s army enslaved the population of Tabolsk, and then continued on with several slave raids, and it was on one of those raids that Ivanhord’s army took heavy losses, such that the slaves revolted and slaughtered Ivanhord and his remaining troops.
On a positive note, the Teutons were finally able to succeed in yet another attempt to lower the religious strength of the nation, and a port fortress in Sviria was erected.
