Instead of keeping everyone home, the new king uses the restless nature of his siblings to his advantage.  He gives his brother what he wants.  "Garulf, if you really want to join the Black Rose, I think it can be arranged."

"Father kept putting it off.   I thought it would never be."

"I do not see a problem like father did.  Of course, he also had to decide who could go.  I will not get to go now and Grahere is off to other things.  If anyone can go, it is you.  And I think I would like to send some troops too.  Father's support for the order was well known, but Europe might wonder if we still retain the passion we had before.  This will make a statement for us."

As soon as the snow cleared, Prince Garulf gathered his men and set off for Ulan Bator to fulfill his dream.

Soon afterwards a ship arrived carrying Olivia, Princess of the Eastern Roman Empire.  She came to be the bride of Prince Hamis.  The couple's marriage is the climax of a boisterous festival.

Workers cut forest down, dug up stumps, and tilled the land of Latvia, in this way much needed farmland was put to use  in this way. In Polotsk a fortress was built next to Minsk.

Prince Farahulf gathered 6,000 Teutonic warriors and went to war. Far to the south and east they marched, through Goth lands (with permission) and made war on the steppes, OB was enslaved and some surrounding peoples raided. The slaves were then marched the long miles back to Teuton lands.

Thinking this he set about trying to rescue as many Arians refugees as he could. He said prayers for the misguided Catholics. Evidently peace can not be taught to the heathens.

Father Mentros took charge of the Churches fleet, and mercenary ships, and sailed for Iberia. He was planning to pick up those fleeing. He found the people had already been driven out and would be moved into Morroco. He closed the churches of God in Iberia, shook the dust from his sandles, and departed Iberia.

King Nguabornu made sure his realm continued to prosper. First he married his daughter Nuna to his loyal lord Kamaal. He then sent Kamaal off to Nupe and Kafin in order to bring those realms closer to the throne. Lord Junta was sent off to Soro for the same purpose. The heir, Prince Jackal, remained in the capital to see to the paper work and daily duties of the kingdom. Lord Mumbasa spent his time with the King. Mumbasa and the king were both old men and spent their time with the troops. They would sit in the shade and drink the realms pale beer and talk of old times. In 593 AD Mumbasa died at the age of 66. The King, at age 78, followed his old friend to the other side in early 595AD. The quiet life in Kanem ended with the old kings death.

The Jackal was proclaimed king, however he wasn't a popular choice and soon revolts and rebellions began. In the streets of Ngazargumu Prince Mawuli moved about in the shadows. The kingdoms agents were hunting any signs of rebellion so the prince moved in secret. He met with the captains of the army, before the Jackal realized what was happening Mawuli was able to secure the loyalty of nearly 2/3 of the army. Mawuli then proclaimed himself king and attacked the loyalist forces. The Jackal rushed his 5,000 men into defensive positions, only 6 of the regions 20 forts remained in loyalist hands, by midmorning of the first day of the revolt 4 of the loyalist forts had been overrun. The loyalist had suffered heavy casualties and the Jackal and his men were in retreat. Mawuli marched his 10,000 strong force through the villages around the capital. The smoke from the burning villages darkened the sky. Both the rebels and the loyalist tried to make their way into the capital. As evening came a battle broke out on the road into the city. The loyalist were heavily outnumbered and Mawuli was a superior commander. In a short and bloody melee the loyalist were decimated. The Jackal died before the city gates. Mawuli struck off the head from the Jackal's corpse and carried it aloft into the city.

The following regions refused to acknowledge the new king: Bilma Oasis, Kafin, Kano, Nupe, Sokoro, and Soro.

Only the fact that the Croat infantry are of superior quality enabled them to extract themselves from the ambush and retreat. With no safe way to fall back the Omani prepared for battle. Terik talked with his generals, as he did so he sipped wine, he soon began to choke and gasp...within minutes he was dead. THE GREAT NORTHERN WAR

All hopes for peace were wishful thinking. The new round of bloodshed began when the Hsuing'nu came flooding over the border into Hopei, Prince Liao T'ai came first. He brought a lightening quick cavalry force. His orders were to clear the way for the slower moving troops the Ilkhan was bringing. Liao T'ai ran into a heavily fortified region. The King of Houma decided to fortify Hopei and the city of Kaifeng. The Hsuing'nu were able to clear the land but he took heavy casualties. The King of Houma and the entire Houma field army retreated behind Kaifeng's strong walls. Soon the Ilkhan Liao Ang arrived with the heavy cavalry and slower foot troops. They immediately set out for Houma.

Meanwhile The Toba Wei were also on the move. The had allied with the Northern Dragon and were marching into Houma. The Toba Wei/Dragon army arrived in Houma at the same time the Hsuing'nu did. They were all obviously working together as evidenced by the Hsuing'nu and Toba Wei cavalry moving together and pacifying the region. They then made way for the Dragon infantry forces which included a large cohort of siege engineers. The Dragon forces stormed into the un walled city and after a brief melee the city fell.

The smoke cleared from the city, the Ilkhan of the Hsuing'nu leaned forward in his saddle. The assault had carried the day, and now the Northern Dragon troops were mopping up the few remaining defenders. A great cheer rose up from the chinese troops. Liao Ang then chuckled, looking left and right at his companions, who nodded their heads approvingly. Orders were quietly issued throughout the camp, and men everywhere climbed into waiting saddles. The Ilkhan felt his blood warm, and not for the first time he realized that this was what was best in life. His eyes narrowed over small cheeks and a thick mustache, and he began barking orders to his couriers.

In the smoking city, King Han Gwan-Ho watched his beloved Dragon banner being raised over the city. He then heard thunder, or was it the rumble of a distant earthquake. Puzzled he noticed his men were looking confused as well, then he heard screams and soon the streets were filled with the horsemen of the Hsuing'nu. They began to butcher his warriors. TREACHERY! He ordered his men to resist and then turned to a courier "get word to the Toba Wei, tell them we are betrayed!" THWACK. King Han stared, an arrow coming from his rear had hit his courier squarly in the heart. Turning as if in slow motion he saw the horse archers of the Toba Wei rain arrows into the backs of his men. Cold sweat beaded up on his brow, he was trapped between these lying serpants. All around him was chaos, he noticed his men were disordered and were begining to come apart completely. Before he could bark orders for them to reform he felt a sharp piercing pain in his knee, he looked down to see a arrow. Before he could pull it out a blood thirsty war cry came from behind him. He turned just in time to feel the sledge hammer punch in his chest as a Hsing'nu lance pierced his armor and punched through his heart and out his back. The Dragon banner fell across the dead kings body.

The Dragon forces were quickly smashed, none survived. The Hsuing'nu were somewhat confused, they thought the deal was for them to take the Houma land. The Toba Wei seemed equally convinced it was theirs. Before the confusion could become more than a misunderstanding the Ilkhan wisely withdrew his outnumbered forces.

In the west a second Toba Wei army had crossed into Kansu and had smashed the fort defenses of the Northern Dragon their too. The two armies then combined to hit Shensi. This region was heavily fortified. In a bloody and difficult fight the Toba Wei prevailed and pacified the region. After the loss of most of their siege engineers and infantry they didnt think it wise for a cavalry forceto try and assault Chang'an. The Northern Dragon capital was both walled, and also had a fierce looking citadel within.

THE DRAGON STRIKES

591AD: King Xu Ho-Wen had confidence that peace would be the order of the day. He focused on economic development instead of readying his realm for war. Perhaps it was because his capital was the holy city of Pienching, who knows why, in any case he was unprepared.

Emperor Hu Yao ordered his Southern Dragon forces to assenble and head north. They reached the border between Anhui and Honan where they wintered.

592AD: In the spring scouts came to King Xu Ho-Wen revealing that a large, almost 45,000 men, Southern Dragon army had crossed the border. They were being escorted Buddhist priests! Quickly the King readied his defenses. Alarms rang out near the gate of the Citadel, Pienching itself wasn't a walled city but it had a citadel at the heart of town.. The King personally led his honorguard to the scene. A battle was raging at the gate. The gates were open and warriors of the Buddhist Church were pouring in. King Xu launched a counter attack, viscious fighting broke out. The King knew he had to get the gates closed before the Southern Dragon armies could arrive. Fortunately the King's forces were superior and the Buddhist Church forces were thrown back, and the Citadel's gates closed.

A few days later the Southern Dragon forces arrived. Immediately they began preparing for an assault. Up on the walls King Xu ordered his catapults to begin to fire on the massed troops below. Crashes of stone shot shattered houses and men, fires soon broke out. This did not stop the determined attackers. Up agaisnt the walls the ladders came. Thousands of men charged up the ladders screaming as they came. The determined defenders fought desperately. Hundreds of attackers were slain and fell from the wall. King Xu fought with his men, sweating and battered he stayed at the front of the assault, ever encouraging his men to fight on. The Dragon warriors were every bit as able as his own Honan troops, the Buddhist Churches troops were not trained to fight in siege combat and so suffered for it.

In the late Afternoon a breach was achieved by the attackers. King Xu was killed, and before long the attackers were pouring into the citadel. Within an hour the citadel was taken, the last of the defenders slain.

It was a terribly bloody affair. The attackers lost 26,000 men, all 7,000 defenders perished.

High above the citadel the Dragon banner was raised and Prince Hu Syang read a proclemation from the Emperor that stated from this day forward there shall no longer be a Northern and Southern Dragon Empire. Forever more there shall only be The Empire of the Golden Dragon.

The body of Wia Cao, killed storming the walls, was transported back to Honan for burial.

Amazingly the Honan Kingdom held together and didnt implode. Chu Won Su became King.

The Shaolin watched the wars in the north ravage the buddhist realm. The human failure to follow the ways of the Buddha were manifest.

The Buddha's work must continue even so. Therefore the monks of the order set about establishing order sites where they could. On the Island of Cheju'do a city, Chungmum, was built.
