THE KINGDOM OF REGET- Celtic Christian- Barbarian, Tech Lvl 4

King Rhun

Diplomacy:

DEATH IN THE NORTH

586AD:  Rhun was considering recent events as he waited for his steward to anounce the arrival of the Celtic priests. Things were bad, his Catholic allies had abandoned his cause and made peace with Britannia. He was still thinking when the priests came in. Rhun said to them"I am suprised your Holy Father has not recalled you. In any case, I thank you for your long service to Reget, but, not only can I not pay you, but Reget cannot accept your services after your Holy Father has embraced our enemies. Return to him now." The priests bowed politely and left. They thougt better of it and so didn't mention to King Rhun that the Holy Father had indeed just recalled his support of Reget and had ordered them anyway.

Rhun sends Heralds throughout the land declaring his proclamation:

"Fellow Cymri, Look at what our enemies have done to our kinsmen of Cumbria-ENSLAVED THEM! I say the people of Reget would rather die than be slaves of our enemies. They want us to migrate or be their slaves; well, we will migrate all right, we will migrate to Salisbury! Death before slavery!"

The proclamation is met with support, the hardships the Regetians have had to endure in this long struggle has given them a fatalistic outlook, revenge or death appeals to them in this present mood. As the people of Northumbria and Lothian begin to gather in, Rhun prepares to defend against any enemy preemptive strike. As part of this plan he sends scouts south to bring word of any approaching Britannian forces.

The scouts soon return and report to Rhun that a Britannian force is indeed on the move. It seems King Liggit of Britannia left Eire with all haste, having left the troops there in the hands of a subordnate. The Britannian King arrived shortly in Salisbury and mobalized the nations troops (and large number of new recruits) and is even now moving to engage us. After a council of war, Rhun decides its best to defend here, on home ground, before taking the war south.

The men of the North drew up their ranks, grim determination in their eyes, and watched the forces of Britannia form up across the vale. For the last 25 years these two realms had been at war, most of the warriors werent even born then. The bitterness runs deep. King Rhun prepared for battle, he watched the Britannians We are outnumbered, and they are all Cavalry, damn them he thought. "Prepare to defend the tribal groups (4 of them) with the heavy infantry, and keep our limited number of cavalry in reserve" he barked to his sub commanders.

The battle began shortly after mid day. The Bretonnian attack began  when over  20,000 cavalry charged as one. Reget only had 15,000 warriors, and over 2/3 rds were infantry.  Into the ranks of Reget the Britannians charged. Swords rising and falling, men screaming in death. Within a half hour the left flank of Reget caves in under the intense pressure. The Britannian's mercenaries swarm into the rear and begin to attack the Tribal camps. Screams of women and children are heared as the massacre begins. The Regetian ranks begin to dissolve as fathers and brothers run to the rear to defend their families. The Britannians take advantage of the disorder and reap a deadly harvest amongst the Regetians. All around death and chaos reign. Only Rhun and his honorguard of heavy elite cavalry hold firm, but soon they are surrounded and begin to fall.

In the tribal camps the Queen tried to rally what few men and women she could, but the mercenary cavalry overwhlemed the pitiful defensive effort, the Queen died impaled on a spear in the effort. As the sun began to go down almost all organized resistance ended. King Rhun and a handful of men were able to fight their way to the tribal camps. They broke into tears at the sight of the massacre of their kinsmen. His pain was ended in the early hours of night as he and his remaining men fell.

587AD: King Liggit takes his army north into Lothian just to make sure no outposts of Reget remain. He finds none and so returns home to Salisbury.

Holland had been given its independance, and with the Royal dynasty of Reget annihilated, the nations time on earth ends.

Diplomacy:  Powys (ab) Salisbury (ab) Glevum (ab) Kent (ab) London (ab) Ipswhich (ch) Hebrides (ch)

The Celtic Church focused on internal matters. Atleast in that they spent much time reflecting on human bitterness and seeking God's mercy less it turn to sin. Many holy sites were added. In Ipswhich the sacked city still had not been rebuilt, and to the Churches suprise was still in Merovingian hands, King Harald was there waiting for transport back to the mainland, but it never came. Never the less a church was established.

Patriarch Aeden died early in 586, his replacement Ninianus served as Patriarch for four years but he too went on to his heavenly reward, in 590. Martin then became Patriarch.

THE WESTERN WAR

586AD: Western Europe continued to be a boiling pot of intrigue and conflict. With a peace treaty barely signed in the north (and not adhered to it seems) the Catholic-Arian conflict heats up in the south. Intense diplomatic talks prove to be fruitless in the end, the frustrated Catholic forces of Lombardy, Ulania, and the Papacy itself, side with Celtic Armorica to settle the "Avar question".

In the spring of 586 the Armoricans begin moving south, they march through Poitou and enter Limousin in the summer, the Lord of Limousin isnt happy with the intrusion, but wisely lets the Armorican army pass since they let him know they are not here to harm him or his lands but simply to pass through, not to metion they severely outnumber him. The slow marching Armoricans only reach the Limousin-Aquitane border as fall comes on, King Basil orders his men to go into winter camp there.

In the south the Avars are also on the move, they march into Aquitane, lands of the Arian Knights. They meet Hermeric, grandmaster of the order. Hermeric then travels with the Avars, to offer his military expertise, as they Invade Gascony. Gascony falls in the summer. The Avars are not soft, like the Civilized Armoricans, and so press their campaign as fall comes on. They march across the border into Limousin in mid september. They are suprised by the pressence of Armoricans, but they had beaten this old enemy before so press on. The Armoricans fall back and convince the Lord of Limousin to side with them to resist the wild Avars. The two sides meet in battle in early November.

As snow begins to fall, the Avar cavalry, 28,000 strong, charges into the ranks of the Armoricans, 29,000 strong but only 11,000 of it is cavalry. The armoricans put up a stubborn fight, and although the wilderness terrain somewhat offsets the cavalry advantage, it isnt long before the Armorican ranks are in full retreat. The retreat soon becomes a rout as the cavalry rides down the disordered infantry. King Basil is only able to save 5,000 Armorican cavalry, they retreat into Poitou. The battlefield is littered with 24,000 Armorican corpses, only 4,500 Avars had fallen.

In the east, in Italy, the Catholics were gathering their host. The Western Empire sent a contingent of 7,500 engineers to meet up with the Ulani. The Papcy mobalized as well, nearly 35,000 Papal troops were raised. Those forces along side the Ulani meant that as the year ended 128,000 Catholic warriors were in Savoy ready to march west in the spring.

587AD: Spring saw the Catholics overrun Provence. The Avar army had finished its planned campaign in Gascony and Limousin so it  moved back into Aquitane. In Iberia the Lombards invaded Aragon, they attempted to persuade them to join them peacefully, but when they hesitated they were attacked. The region was easily pacified.

In June the Catholic forces marched into Languedoc. The Avars reacted into the region. The Avars, on their home turf, and do to superior generalship, outmanuevered the Catholic forces and caught them crossing a river in July. The Avars fell upon the vanguard as it emerged from the river. Outnumbered 5 to 1 in total forces the Avars only hope was to destroy the Catholic army before it could deploy. The hard charging Avars smashed the vanguard, thousands died as they were caught unprepared. The Ulani Khan, Kublai, watched from the far bank, he quickly gave orders for his large cavalry forces to divide in two. One group went upstream, the other downdstream, both with orders to find fords to cross and move to engage the flanks of the Avars. To hold the Avars in place to prevent them from reacting, he sent all 43,000 of his foot (Mostly Papcy troops, with a minority of Roman and Ulani) straight across the river into the Avar. The Avar butchered the poor infantry. Over and over the sword arms of the Avar rose and fell, the river water turning red in the slow current. The infantry were broken repatedly, but kept rallying and then would come on again. The Priest Pelauus was wounded early in the fight but was taken to safety.

Still the Ulani cavalry hadnt come, so the slaughter continued. The Romans made a valiant charge into the ranks of the Avar and for a time were able to drive a wedge into the center of the Avar ranks. Before long though they were cut off. Prince Romulus, the Western Emperors own brother, rallied his surrounded men with Roman stoicism for a final defense. Out side of the cut off Romans, the Priest Damasus desperately tried to come to the Romans aid. He failed.

Romulus thrust over and over with his gladius, fewer and fewer of his men were left. The wild feral war cries of the Avars were deafening. Dodging an Avar he made his way to his standard for a last defense. Unseen, an Avar swooped in to decapitate him from behind. Soon all the Roman contingent were dead.

Shortly before Dusk the Ulani cavalry arrived, both flanks of it hitting the Avar hard, only a few Infantry remained alive by then. The exhausted Avar could barely lift their sword arms after slaughtering so many Catholics. They were now being beaten back by the fresh Ulani cavalry. The Avar, now heavily outnumbered themselves, began to come apart. Hermeric, the Suevian Grandmaster of the Arian order, falls in this cavalry melee. As darkness came they routed, only the cover of night allowed any (4,500 heavy cavalry) to escape. Found on the field, after the pursuit was recalled, is Kublai, the Ulani Khan, a Avar sword still in his chest.   His son Michael, who was also in the battle, was proclaimed Khan by the army.

The river itself was clogged with dead, and the banks red and littered with corpses. The Avars left 22,000 dead, the Catholics left 54,000 dead, most of it Infantry.

The Catholics winter in Languedoc, the Avars retreat into Catalonia.

588AD: In Iberia the Lombards get another easy victory as Navarre is defeated.

The Catholic host makes its way into Catalonia, the demoralized Avar forces, now a fraction of their former  strength are easily  defeated. The Avar fight with honor but die just the same. The Capital of Barcelona also falls before the year is out.

589AD: The Conquest of the Avars is completed as the Lombards and Catholic forces meet in the conquest of Valencia. The city falls too. The small Papacy force left remain in Valencia with the Lombards while the Ulania return to Italy.

Diplomacy: none

The realm of Armenia was quiet, King Flavius focused on defense and very little else.

THE KINGDOM OF THE TEUTONS-Roman Catholic-Barbarian, Tech Lvl 3

King Gunther

Diplomacy: none

Frothgar looks around the fortress and notices how crowded it is getting. It is getting difficult to find suitable activities to channel the energies of all the adventurers. So he orders the scribes, "Write to all the nations of Europe and beyond. It is time we expanded our relations with other nations - in particular, marital relations."

Some months later, an emissary from the Empire of Persia calls at the court. "The heir to the throne needs a suitable bride - a child of the king or heir."

Frothgar, who was ready for the usual long speech saying nothing, perks up. "We have several unmarried daughters, starting with Gruna and Greta here."

The emissary looks at the two ladies, obviously in their twenties, and looks dismayed. "She should be close to the age of the Prince. He is eleven."

Frothgar frowns for moment then smiles. "We will miss her sorely, but she will make an excellent queen. We have an eleven year old." He introduces an obviously excited young princess, lists her skills and extols her virtues. "This is Ginna."

The emissary looks shaken. "Djinna you say? Is she of the Djinn then?" Seeing the mystified looks, he explains by describing the magical beings.

Frothgar laughs and looks at her with a smirk. "No, she's completely human. Her only magic is that normal to human females."

There ensues some discussion about how to get the couple together. It is decided that a Teuton expedition would be better received by the intervening nations than a large Persian one. "We will build a ship for the occasion. Farahulf, as the only one of you with any maritime experience, will command the expedition. Hamis will go with him to learn the ways of the water, and since he can write, to record the voyage."

The ship is completed and laden with furs and amber. The new flagship is also filled with a small honor guard and the wedding party. The royal family gathers at the dock to see them off.

"She is so young", moans Queen Leda to Frothgar as the ship moves out of sight.

"The voyage is long", he replies. "She and her groom will be of age by the time she gets there." He knows this is poor consolation to a distressed mother.

They travel down the Dneiper, visiting growing Minsk and old Boguslav. Eventually they reach the Black Sea and Constantinople. Ginna gazes with wide-eyed wonder at the sites of the bustling metropolis.

But her visit also reminds her of the journey ahead. The leisurely pace of the trip should have let them arrive in time to see the signing of the Treaty of Constantinople. But the negotiations have broken down, and word of the outbreak of war has reached the Imperial city.. Ginna sees lessons to be learned. "Father has been badgering the envoys for years about the Iberian situation. Hamis, you must take home full news of this. I also will take details to Ctesiphon. The reaction they get in the Persian court will tell me a bit about the politics of my new home."

Traveling on, they sail through the Bosphorus, and down the coast to Tyre. There she meets the entourage from Ctesiphon and starts her new life.

Meanwhile Lord Stilger went slaving, as is Teutonic custom. No out right enslavement of whole regions this time, simply raids.

In 590AD King Frothgar died. Prince Gunther became King.

Diplomacy: none

The Croats set out to finish Akwar and in the process continue its brutal enslavement of the native peoples in the region. This process began with a port fortress beying ordered built on the Senagal coast. Then the large number of Croat slaves began building a postal road through depopulated Khalem into Senagal. The army, lead by the King, Moved into Boure. The last hold of the Akwarese royal family. The small Akwarese army was slaughtered and the remnant of the Royal family executed. Thus Akwar passes into history. The regions people are enslaved and taken back to Ghana. The army then marches to Senagal.  Senagal, already under Croat control was ordered enslaved, a brief revolt was crushed and the people enslaved. The Croats then marched into Gambia, the poor people of that realm suffer defeat and enslavement as well. The King marches back to his Capitol with thousands of slaves. The hatred for the white devils is at an all time high in West Africa.

At the same time the King was on his enslaving campaign, he had sent a second army north into Jenne. The all infantry army suffered under the harsh desert conditions and were able to use numbers to smite the desert nomads, it wasnt an easy task in the harsh terrain though. With the region pacified, the people were enslaved. The confident Croats (and Mercenaries) then marched into Adawara intent on repeating the process. Here the battle went against them, the harsh desert climate and the viscous desert nomads get the better of the Croats, over half of whom fall. Also killed in the battle was the much loved Bishop Peterof. Some folk wonder what a priest of the Coptic Church is doing on a slave raid.

In any event the demoralized Croat army returned back to Ghana with what slaves they did have.

So his realm was unprepared for the onslaught that came off the steppes. Wild horseman came bursting into Ortrar, the region was plundered, farms burnt, and villages destroyed. The small garrison had no chance to fend off the raiders. The horseman loaded down with booty fled when they could carry no more. Singanakh next felt the raiders sting, again suffering the same fate. Bokhara and Khwarzim were the last victims. The small garrisons were no match for the 15,000-20,000 raiders. Three of the Khans wealthiest regions were now desolated, farms annihilated, villages mere ashes, and huge sums of gold carried off. Mongka was not amused. Investigations were conducted, the surving villagers were not sure who had done the raids. They simply knew they didnt look like steppe folk.

THE NORTHERN EMPIRE OF THE GOLDEN DRAGON-Buddhist-Civilized, Tech Lvl 4

Emperor Han Gwang-Ho

Diplomacy: none

THE DEATH OF THE DRAGON

586A.D: In the spring,  the Emperor Si Lei III passed away. The Imperial heir, Jet Lei, was in Shentung when word of his fathers death reached him. At the same time, word was also brought of treason. His younger brother Si Lei IV had declared himself Emperor. Jet Lei shuddred with dread. Si Lei IV had always been unstable, he had been sadistic and cruel since his earliest days. The buddhist monks said he was mad. Jet Lei knew he must act fast, the realm would suffer under the rule of his insane brother. He began gathering the garrisons in the eastern provences and marched east. Unfortuinately he couldnt reach Shensi before winter came on.

In Chang'an, Si Lei IV watched in glee as his royal siblings and relations were draggged before him wailing. An insane fire burned in his eyes as he had them beheaded. One by one the royal family was exterminated, male and female alike, young and old the same.

Si Lei IV gathered the western garrisons, and then waited for his elder brother to arrive.

In Korea, General Lu revolted, he married  the heiress of  the Royal Korean Dynasty and declared himself King.

587AD:  Northern China waited as if holding its breath for what the future would bring. Jet Lei, eager to depose his upstart brother, marched into Shensi in April. He called on the Dragon legions and Garrisons to recognize him as the true Emperor. Some, a few, came over to his cause, most did not. Seeing that no more would desert, he ordered his attack.

Si Lei's forces waited in the strong ring of forts protecting the capital. From the ramparts Si Lei IV looked down on the attacking forces. As the fighting began at the base of the wall he watched with an unholy fascination as blood flowed and carnage spread. All morning long the loyalist stormed the forts. Their casualties were heavy. By mid day the rebel Emperor saw the Loyalist were nearly broken, he ordered his heavy elite cavalry, which had been held in reserve, forward to finish the Loyalist off.

Emperor Jet Lei was half way up the redoubt, that was serving as Si Lei IV's HQ, when he saw the heavy elite cavalry charge around his forces flank and smash his rear. He knew all was lost so he ordered his Dragon banner unfured in all its glory, he then let out a feral warcry and led his honorguard into a suicidal attack up the slopes to die fighting the Usurper.

Si Lei IV let out a insane laugh then drew his sword and jumped up on the rampart. Still laughing insanely, he leads his own men into a counter charge. The final struggle was bloody. Both honorguards gutted themselves in the frenzied fighting. Though the two Brothers never met each other in personal combat, both fell in the last charge.

The Si Dynasty comes to a bloody end.

588-589AD: With the Imperial dynasty extinct, the Empire dissolves into chaos. For two years petty warolords struggle back and forth across the realm struggling for power. Farms were burnt, villages sacked, and anarchy given free reign.

590AD: Order slowly is restored,  In the Dragon homeland of Shesi, a noble claiming descent from the past Han dynasty comes to power.

In Houma a local strongman gains power.

In the east, in Honan, a powerful lord comes to power.
