THE IBERIAN WAR

561AD: Jimuri, the great khan of the Osman prepared his people to move once more. The Catholics knew that the horde would once again be on the move. So once again a flurry of assassins and others were sent out to disrupt the horde. This time they were not as successful.Amazingly not a single shadowy attempt succeeded. No doubt thanks to the help the horde now had from the Arian Intel services.

The Osmani quickly moved west, through Catalonia, and into Valencia, the area quickly fell. Valencia had a very small wall but the overwhelming power of the Osmani meant they simply rushed it and the city was pacified in short order with minimal casualties. It wasn't long before an Arian Priest arrived. He over saw the Osman conversion to the Arian faith. They spent the rest of the year learning the Gospel from the Arian priests.

In Germania, the Avars were also on the move. Marching through Swabia and crossing the Rhine, the Avars plundered Burgundy. Having been plundered by the Osmani recently the pickings were slim.

To the east of the Avars the Golden Horde was also on the move. Being escorted by Danish guides the Horde moved through Danish lands and ended the year on the western side of the Rhine in Champagne. On the way the daughter of the Danish King, Freida, was given in marriage to the Khan.

In far of Ctesiphon, the Sassanid Emperor ordered his nephew, Cyrus Shapuran, the scourge of Europe, admiral of the Imperial Mediterranean fleet, to set sail again to help the Osmani. Feeling confident he could again win victory over the barbarians in Europe, Cyrus set out. Hearing of the fall of Valencia from their Arian Knight allies the Persian fleet made for Madeira. There they blockaded the harbor with the Arian Knights. As winter came on, the fleet sat in the harbor, the city looked unusually calm, even deserted.

562AD:The Avars moved into Orleans and began looting it, which proved to be very fortunate for them because in their wake came riding the Golden Horde and jsut missed smashing into them by a few weeks in Burgundy.

Spring brought battle as the Osmani plunge into Granada. The lands were quickly over run, Madeira was indeed deserted, and the Lombards had sacked it then abandoned it as they fell back toward Seville. As the Osmani occupied the city they watched as a British fleet flying the banner of Reget entered the harbor. The Persians and Arian Knights had 130 warships all told and the Persians had 5,000 marines. Reget brought only 70 warships to the battle, but all were heavy and half were elite. They also had 7,000 marines. The battle began when the Persian and Arians maneuvered to get into a battle line. The British smashed into the center of this half-formed line. The heavier British galleys, packed with marines rammed and boarded the smaller Persian vessels. The British galleys drove a huge wedge into the allied fleet. Sinking many ships. While the Persian navy was of better quality, as were their marines, the British could concentrate more power because of their larger vessels. By noon the allied fleet was coming apart. The British had split the fleet in two. And were now destroying the separated halves. The Persian transports, which had Heavy cavalry and siege engineers on board, did their best to escape the harbor while the British were still tied up fighting the galleys. Most did escape, 30, out of 75, were sunk with all the cavalry and siege troops lost. In the midst of this break out Cyrus's ship is rammed and begins to go under. With the flagship gone the Persians run for it. The slower moving British galleys try to give chase but are soon outdistanced. 60 Persian vessels are lost, along with 4,000 marines. The Arian Knights lost all but 5 ships, out of 40 they started with. The forces of Reget lose a mere 15 galleys, and 1,000 Marines. An overwhelming victory for Reget. In the aftermath of the battle, the British pull a soaked figure out of the water. Cyrus, prince of the Persians  and Victor on the Rhine is thrown in chains and taken all the way back to Britain as a prisoner.

Frustrated that their allies were defeated, the Osman turned south and over ran Gebal-Al-terik, then marched into Andalusia for the hope for final battle with the Lombards. The Lombards fell back. Although the Lombards had mass conscripted, and massively over taxed their people to field a much larger army, they were still no mach for the Osmani in the open field. It is fall before Andalusia is pacified; the Osmani set up siege lines and begin an active siege of Seville. The mercenary siege engineers lob missiles at the walls hoping to cause a breach.

The time it took to run through Gebal-al-tarik, and then subjugate Andalusia had given the Golden Horde the time it needed to catch up. As the Osmani pounded Seville's walls the Golden Horde road into view.

The Lombards who were on the walls cheered themselves hoarse as they saw the first riders of the Golden Horde come into view. They slowly stopped cheering and just watched in disbelief as more and more kept riding into view. It seemed as if an endless flood of riders on steppe ponies were poring out into the plains before Seville.

The Osman quickly moved out of their siege lines and into a battle arrangement. Nearly 600,000 steppe warriors (with a small number of mercenaries and the Golden Hordes Polish allies) faced off.

The battle began with the Golden Horde sending its light cavalry on a wide sweep to the flanks. The Golden Horde had more light cavalry than the Osmans had in total warriors. It wasn't long before the Osman were cut off and surrounded, and being forced back toward the walls of Seville. Arrows darkened the sky as both hordes released floods of arrows into the other. The Osmani and their allies were getting the worse of it. The Cuman chieftain fell with 3 arrows in his chest.

As the volleys of arrows opened up huge swaths in the Osmani the Khan of the Golden Horde sent forth his Heavy cavalry. The earth shuddered violently and people in villages’ scores of miles away felt the ground tremble as 83,000 heavy cavalry charged home. The Osmani couldn't stand up to this charge and they shattered. Carnage truly began now. Some riders fell back to the wagons, which had been formed into a square for defense of the tribes. Others tried to flee only to be swallowed in a mass of Golden Horde riders. And still others tried to fight on. The Bulgar Khan was one of those who fought on. He hacked and slew in a desperate fury, in the end he was gutted and fell amongst his brave clansmen.

As the Mounted riders swarmed around the mobile Osmani forces, the Great khan of the Golden Horde ordered his Polish allies to charge the wagon square, figuring the infantry of the poles was better suited for attacking this fortified position. The barbaric poles charged home and swarmed over the defenses of the nomadic tribes. It was a bloody affair, and several times the poles were thrown back. Jimuri, the Great Khan of the Osman, seeing his people being butchered, charged with what few men he had left into the rear of the poles. The charge smashed the rear ranks of the poles at first, but soon the greater numbers of the poles simply overwhelmed the remnants of the khan’s forces. The khan and a small band fought their way into the Wagon Square. The Khan wanted desperately to rescue his family and try and flee to safety. As he fought his way deeper into the square he was suddenly thrown from his mount as it collapsed from the axe blow of a pole. Quickly drawing his saber, he dispatched the foul smelling pole. Screaming in fury the Khan charged towards his people’s yurts. A swarm of polish heavy infantry fell upon him. Saber frantically slashing two poles fell one with a cut throat, the other with a wicked slash across the abdomen of another barbarian. The Khans last clansmen rode their steppe ponies into the fray trying to save him. They scattered the poles in the area. The khan was on his hands and knees. Bloody running from his mouth. He fell onto his side and then rolled onto his back revealing a wicked axe wound to the chest. He stared into a crystal blue autumn sky, and began to wonder if the Christian God's heaven was as beautiful as the steppes back home, as all around him begin to fade into black.....

The Osman horde ceases to exist. All 168,000 fall. The Golden Horde suffered 38,000 casualties, most coming from the polish infantry.

THE KINGDOM OF AQUILONIA (was Dumnonia)-Roman Catholic-Civilized, Tech Lvl 4

King Tristan

Diplomacy: none

It was a restless night for King Tristan. For tonight, he had a dream that would change forever the face of the Britain.

In his dreams, he saw three mighty flags standing together flowing in the wind. The sun in the background melted into the moon, the peaceful white transformed into blood red. Raging fires, unseen by any mortal man, surrounded the countryside. Everything burning! People screeching in terror! The wails of the dying and the cries of the wounded filled the air. The rotten stench of death washed over everything. The images of the three flags burned to ashes for what seemed like eternality. All was dark. Then, thunder and clouds gathered and hard rain poured down upon the ashes. There was silence. The ashes and blood disappeared and soaked into the ground. Then, up arose an unknown herald. The rain stopped. A bolt of lighting hit this flag and formed a glow around this emblem. The clouds parted and a single beam of pure white light from the heavens fell upon this flag. The likes that was not seen since long ago…yes….it was from long ago….thought Tristan.

This flag had a white lion upon a blue background. Upon the head of the lion was a crown. Then, letters formed in the foreground. First blurry, and hardly legible, they became increasing clear. The word would later be interpreted to be Aquilonia.

King Tristan, awoke from this vision and called forth his leaders. Prince Magunnus, Prince Owen and Lord Mark of Cornwall arrived immediately. After briefing these leaders with the Kings orders, they went forth and gathered a mighty army. The King renamed Dumnonia to Aquilonia.

561AD: In march Prince Magunnus marched north into Powys, the garrison was quickly crushed. A garrison was left and the army prepared to move into the Powysian homeland, Gwynned.

In April the Catholic Church's representatives read aloud in Glevum square the Papal Bull excommunicating King Tristan. Perhaps it was the recent schism in the church, perhaps it was the fact that the church in this part of Europe had become Isolated from Rome, or perhaps it was jsut that Tristan was a Charismatic leader who the people and nobility loved, whatever the reason the Popes excommunication failed. This only served to lessen the nations opinion and support for the Catholic church.

Mark of Cornwall was bringing the Aquilonian navy west to blockade Caer Swys. In May he encountered a very large fleet flying under the banner of the Celtic Church. The Church ofcourse moved to intercept and fight on behalf of their co-religionist in Powys. The Church's navy was larger, but Aquilonia's was of better quality of was made up of heavier warships. Mark of Cornwall was also a superb general. In a battle that lasted all morning the Celtic Navy was anihilated, Aquilonia suffered moderate losses.

A mere week later, the Powysian navy met up with the Aquilonian fleet. The Powsian fleet had jsut landed some troops in Ieland, word had not reached them yet of the hostilities in Britain. The two forces met and a terrible battle erupted. Powys's navy was smaller, but it was of better quality. In the end only the superb abilities of Mark of Cornwall saved the day for Aquilonia. The Powysian navy is sunk though with heavy losses on Aquilonia's side. The Aquilonian navy then sails into Caer Syws's harbor and sets up a blockade.

Summer saw the conquest of Gwynned and the Start of the Siege of Caer Swys. Caer Swys was fortunate that their King had wisely stored up grain for just such a rainy day.

562-563AD: For nearly 2 years the grain lasts and the long siege continues. by the end of 563AD the food begins to run short.

564AD: The last of the food runs out over the winter and starvation begins to set in. Undaunted though the city holds out over the long months of spring and early summer. By June though the city surrenders, unable to endure any longer. The City is visciously sacked, then burnt to the ground. The few surviving citizens weep as they watch their home get utterly destroyed.

While this fighting was happening in the westen seas, Prince Owen lead a force of Aquilonian heavy galleys out into the North sea. They soon took to Piracy, many merchant ships fell victim to the bloody corsairs. Hidden amongst the merchants were assassins waiting for such piracy, they failed to find Owen's life blood however. His fleet fat with booty, and towing many merchant ships they had captured, the Aquilonian corsairs return home. The trade fleets from many  nations were severely hurt.

THE CELTIC CHURCH-Celtic Christian-Civilized, Tech Lvl 4

Patriarch Aeden II

Diplomacy: . none

The Celtic church called for a Crusade. Patriarch Aeden II preached holy war from the pulpit.

He eulogizes the Latin Chrisitan martyrs who were cut down in their own churches. He decries the Osmani refusal to consider any offer of peace. Finally, he reads aloud the translation of a letter from the Osmani chief to the King of Denmark, a letter that bodes ill for Celtic Christians everywhere:

"Old Woman

What now? What of your unanswered squeals for help?
Pity... no one cares about the RCA. Everyone is content to watch Europe
die.

How's your little lap dog Reget? How unfortunate to be an Island Celt and
have no navy.
Such a poor peasant of minor nobility, I'm afraid he too shall perish.
Such is fate when one casts their lot with the thrice damned.

The EO remembers you well. Woe unto you, traitorious dog, for you will reap
what you have sewn.
The Svear are waiting for you, they call out your name from the beyond. I
shall send you to Charon, give my regards.

Europe looks so much better now, only a few more strokes of the white paint
brush and all will be complete.
Perhaps you should have bet more on that Horde Lottery?

Wear your sunday best, for you'll be on display, piked with your little lap
dog.

Cheers,
-Jimuri "

This letter was also read out at the same time in all other Celtic Christian monasteries.

Aedan emphasized the fact that the Osmani now threaten the people of Reget and all others in northern Europe, both Celtic and Roman, with destruction and death. He also emphasized the Osmani's pagan heart by harping upon his reference to Charon and the pagan underworld. Truly this man is a wicked, unchristian devil!

With that the great call went out, and the Celts responded with flocking to join the call. a few years later (as the Crusade was still mustering) word came that the Osmani had been anihilated. With this glad news the crusaders returned home with much rejoicing and thanksgiving.

THE KINGDOM OF THE LOMBARDS-Roman Catholic-Barbarian, Tech Lvl 3

King Hermann

Diplomacy: none

The Lombards see the hand writing on the wall and leave a few small garrisons behind, brave souls all, to try and atleast make the Osmani slow down to reduce their positions, it works.

While those brave Lombards make their sacrifice, the region of Granada is evacuated, the Lombard tribes there are marched west into Seville. The Lombard warriors left behind sack the port city of Madiera. The army is then gathered into Seville. Every available food stuff is hoarded into the city to prepare for the siege to come. SEE:The Iberian war

In the after math of the huge battles, not to emntion over half a million mounted warriors riding all over the nations farm land, and the incredibly massive level of taxation imposed, the nation slips into economic depression and has large portion of its cropland destroyed.

But surviving is its own reward I suppose.

THE KINGDOM OF THE MEROVINGIANS-Roman Catholic-Barbarian, Tech Lvl 4

King Sigibert

Diplomacy: none

Harald’s wise sire, Sigibert, had always suspected Croat collusion with the Osmani: "HOW could the Osmani have come so far, so fast? Petreskov pleaded they were "forced…" the only thing things "forced" about the sniveling, craven Croats are their gratuitous lies! It smacks of foreknowledge… foreknowledge that would have spared your grandfather." "Perhaps," had replied young Harald, "but for now, we should learn what the Croat barbarians plan. We and the other powers of Europe and Rome may feel more sure if we can divine the coward’s hand. And surely, the Croat people themselves are now deep in the bosom of Christ." Lord Dorf was thus chosen, after attending other duties, to infiltrate into Croatian lands. Early in 561, Harald, now king, awaited word from the new fortifications of Gildengard. When it did, it was as bad as he had feared: the new king Vladimir was awaiting a strike at the heart of the Church by the accursed Osmani… at which time, Croat assassins plotted to strike down the Pontif, himself! "There is little we can do to change the course of the Osmani horde… but we can use Our royal power to send word of this direst perfidy to his Holiness, and all right-thinking Christians! The Croat people are being led to Hell’s gates by Satan’s minion in Ravenna—pray God the Church can save them!" Word was quickly dispatched to the Vatican along with documentation exposing the Croatian plot.

The Golden Horde was given guides so they could pass through Merovingian lands SEE: The Iberian War

Harald watched from the battlements in shocked silence, as wave after wave of asian horsemen passed to the South. "They’re like locusts!" he murmured. Yet they passed. How God could send a horde to defeat a horde almost surpassed imagining… but they were good to their word, and he prayed for their souls… and his people’s.

Harald marries, and his Freia, his Queen, gives him a son in 564AD.

THE KINGDOM OF THE CROATS-Roman Catholic-Barbarian, Tech Lvl 4

King Vladimar

Diplomacy: none

In the spring of 561AD the Pope made public documents uncovered by Merovingian agents. The documents detailed a plan by Vladimar, the Croat king, to assassinate Pope Agapetus. With this evidence in hand Agapetus issued his second Papal bull, excommunicating a monarch, of the year. Initial reaction to the excommunication was shock, at the plan to assassinate the pope, not so much that there was conflict between the Vatican and the King. The nobility was sympathetic to the Papacy in general. Days passed into weeks as everyone waited for the first shoe to drop. King Vladimar was holed up in the capital, his son Tomsilav was acting as his personal bodyguard, les any Catholic assassins come calling.

Vladimar was worried, the excommunication had shaken his kingdom deeply. there were constant rumors of unrest and murmurs of plots to overthrow him. As Vladimar read these dispatches he caught the flicker of a knife out of the corner of his eye, he quickly turned aside. Just in time as the blade sliced throught the air in the place his throat had been only a moment ago. He spun, kicking his chair toward his attacker. As he whirled about he saw who the assassin was. Tomislav....his own son and bodyguard. Tomslav was decades younger than Vladimar, who was in his 5th decade. The two grappled, Tomislav had the strength of youth. But his strength was that of a young man who was still growing, Vladimars was the strength of years of muscle hardened on campaign. Vladimar threw Tomislav across the table, scattering the dispatches. Vladimar, with breathing room now, drew his broadsword. Tomslav was on his feet just as quick and the rasp of his sword being drawn greeted the royal guards who burst into the room at the sound of the struggle. Vladimar held a hand up checking the guards "I'll settle this" Puzzled the guards just looked at eachother as father and son slowly circled one another. Tomsilav charged, blades rang and Vladimar side stepped. He counter swung but Tomislav's sword was there to parry. Now Vladimar charged, a whirl of stroke and counter stroke, parry, thrust, dodge filled the next few moments. Then a kick to the knee brought Tomislav down. Vladimar quickly moved over him and held the blade to his throught. "father, ple....[gurgle]" Tomsilav didn't get to finish his plea for mercy as Vladimars blade tore through his throat. Dragging his blade free, Vladimar turns toward the guards "Dispose of that traitor." They are startled at first but move quickly to obey. Tomislav's quarters were searched, in it were letters from the Vatican. It seems the Vatican had promised Tomislav they would lift the excommunication if he would spy for them. He seems to have taken matters into his own hand. Back in Rome Agapetus merely shook his head "impulsive barbarians"

As if Tomislav's coup attempt opened a flood gate, all hell broke loose in Croatia. It was now mid summer, and for months now the political and religious situation had been discussed by high and low born alike. The regions of Istrain and Karlovac revolt. Lord Treskov and 7,500 Hundred Croat warriors led the revolt in Karlovac proclaiming their independance. In Senjska prince Petreskov revolts, it was reported that in the streets of Zagreb he was seen arm in arm with the Catholic Bishop Mathew. The flag of the Vatican was raised over the city and region. The lands swear feality directly to the Pope.

In Ravenna itself, King Vladimar was able to maintain the loyalty of the army, with their support no serious revolts took place. Some minor rioting, but that was quickly put down. When the dust settled however the bureacracy of the Croat govnt had been wiped out. The assassins escaping during the confusion of the riots. In a fury, Valdimar orders the Monastary, and the Cathedral in Ravenna, torched. He watched the buildings burn, his face a mask of hate.

Khosru II, King of Kings, King of Persia and Babylonia, the Overlord of Arachosia, the Holy Arm of Ahura Mazda, the Sassanid, Heir to the Achaemenids.

Diplomacy: Georgia (nt)

Khosru II once again sent his fleet off to war. This time it went to Iberia to help the Osmani SEE: The Iberian War Just in case one of the Hordes would come his way he ordered massive, and I do mean massive, fortifications built along his northwestern border.

In the meantime the Emperor moved to put his Empire back together after the revolts. Yazdegard is appointed Imperial heir, he is given most of the Imperial army. His task is to crush the greek upstarts in Edessa. He marches north first however. Arriving in rebellious Georgia he explains through strong talk and show of force that Georgia should see the error of their ways and return to the Imperial fold, which they wisely do. Turning southwest, he arrives in Edessa. This greek Orthodox region isnt given any such chance to repent. The region is brutally pacified. Then all of its holy sites are looted and burnt to the ground. "let these greek pigs learn a important lesson" he says. The worship of Orthodox Christianity is outlawed. All the local nobility, and civilian leadership are executed. The monks, priests, and other religious folk are expelled from the land. Lord Valaksh is given the newly pacified lands as a fief for his years of service to the Imperial throne.

In the east things would be somewhat harder to put back together. After some thought however, Khosru decides it may not be so bad that some of the desert regions were gone. Coming to terms with the Parthians. the Empire would get back Kophat Dagh, Merv, and Gurgan. In exchange some gold was transfered to the Parthians. When Imperial representatives arrived in the returned lands they were unhappy to discover that the citizens in Merv had fled for their lives in fear of Imperial retribution for their rebellion. The city is unoccupied. Now the Emperor had another headache, rounding up some people to colonize the city.

Diplomacy: Khurasan (f) Carmania (t) Afghanistan (fa)

Artabanus had a vision, he saw himself restoring his empire to the glory that it had under his ancestors. However, before he could travel that path he ahd to deal with the Sassanids. After some talks a deal was struct, thankfully the Sassanids had their attentions focused in the west. Part of the deal was to transfer Gurgan, Kophat Dagh, and the city of Merv back to Persian control. So Artabanus himself travelled to Merv, there he removed the Garrison and offered that any who wished to flee to safety out of fear of Persian retribution were free to do so. The citizens of Merv knew the Persians dealt harshly with rebels, and now that their protection from Parthia was being withdrawn the citizens quickly gathered what posessiosn they could and fled, escorted by the Parthian army.

other areas of parthia were granted more autonamy (NT status) Aria, Khvor, Registan, and Siahan. Still others were visited by Parthian diplomats and encouraged to have stronger ties with the throne.

THE GUPTA EMPIRE-Hindu-Civilized, Tech Lvl 4

Kalrini, Empress of the Gupta

Diplomacy: none

In 561 the Empire set out to increase its trade to the far east. The past few decades had saw impressive expansion into south east asia, cities built, lands cultivated and prosperity increase. Mashatra had created an impressive legacy. It wouldnt survive his death, which came in june of the same year.

When the Emperor died without a formal heir many moved to take the throne. In Maghada Prince Enhata moved to secure the loyalty of the army. The Empress feared this so she began talking with the Captain of the guard, and by using her "charms" on him he sided with her. The Military followed. Prince Enharta simply was arrested and "dissapeared"

In the east Bherampti was busy trying to increase the Empires ties in the area when word of the Emperor's death came. In short order he dispatched his comrades who might want to remain loyal. He then won over the loyalty of the Avan garrisons. Within a few months he had his own little kingdom set up based in Pegu.

As news of the Civil war spread many regions opted for independance and revolted. The most costly one was the loss of Edrosia and Masura, with it went a huge section of the Empires trade. The Local merchants largly took to sea and their own interests. The loss of many cities in the east also meant the new trade routes to the east collapsed before they really got under way.Tough times ahead to rebuild the Gupta trade economy.

King Keppa looked out of his island hut to see his kingdom for the first time without the use of the pretty red and green plants that helped him relax."Good Shiva, what have we done?"

The morning reports could tell no lies. The bureaucreats that have been waiting for a long time to see a ruler actually come out of the smoking hut voluntarally and under his own powers, piled long over-due problems in front of the King at an alarming rate.

"No Trade.......blah, blah, blah.....","Lack of city trade........blah......","The land that we do own is just beach......"

That hurt because he liked that beach.

"No running water....","No spiritual guidance....","Lack of education...."  Blah, Blah, Blah......Keppa looked at the smoking hut.....thought about it and said nope not this time.

That is when the Javan rebirth began.........

Several useless jungle regions were cut loose and diplomacy undertaken in more productive lands. Lord Jak'lam died after completing his talks in 565AD. Prince Toopa tried to find a passage to India, but caught in a monsoon his fleet was lost with all hands.
