THE WAR OF CATHOLIC SUCCESSION

546AD: In Britain the forces of Reget and Powys gathered together and prepared to depart for the continent to help their Bretonnian Catholic allies. Pope Revonius traveled across the channel to Merovingian lands. He then traveled south and waited in provence for the Lombards to arrive. As he waited he preached loudly to all that would listen of his vision for a Unified faith that includes Celts as well as Catholics. Revonius grew ill as winter set in, and few weeks before Christ's mass he died. Archbishop John, who had travelled with Revonius from Britain, was made Pope.

In the Western Empire, Emperor Cronan, from Naples, issued orders to the Imperial legions. He Ordered Legate Gedna to take his Legions in Rome and march north and help the Bretonnian forces take control of Catholic Holy sites and turn them over to the Bretonnian Pope. Gedna, however, was a man of deep conviction. Trusting in the ancient traditions of Rome and of the Roman Catholic Church, Legate Gedna knew he couldnt betray the Holy See of St Peter. When Pope Agaapetus returned to Rome the Legate talked to him and explained the Emperors orders. Through firm words and inspirational preaching, Agapetus convinced Gedna of the rightness of his cause. Gedna and His Legions swore for Agapetus. Gedna arrested the Royal family. Galerus, who was just recently named heir was killed when he tried to flee. Theodosius, the next oldest heir after Galerus, also swore for Pope Agapetus. he was still young and wouldnt be of age for a few years. So Gedna was charged by the Pope to be Regent for the young prince until he could take the Imperial crown up himself. The rest of the royal family, the women and Romusus, 4 year old younger brother of Theodosius, were kept "safe" in the imperial palace under guard.

News of the Revolt spread throughout the Empire like wild fire. Emperor Cronan was on his way to Rome when the news reached him. Enraged the Emperor hurried to Rome in the hope of reversing the situation. The Emperor reached Rome in may. Legate Gedna had the Imperial Legions, that had sided with him, lined up awaiting battle. The Emperor was outnumbered almost 3 -1, but the Emperor knew he was a better general than Gedna. The Emperor ordered his legion to charge. 7,000 loyal romans versus Gedna's 21,000 romans. The Emperor fought valiantly, but the odds were to great. His forces were hammered, and when he was killed his legion fell apart. Gedna now was master of the Western Empire.

Most of the Empire accepted the new Emperor, Apulia, Campania (and Naples), Savoy, and Switzerland did not. Every other region swore feality to the Child Emperor Theodosius. Gedna gathered up the remaining loyal garrisons.

547AD:The Lombards march out of Spain into southern Gaul. In Provence they meet up with their Burgundian allies. a few months later Celtic forces from Powys and Reget arrive. The abbey in provence was taken control of and turned over to priests loyal to Pope John. The Lombards then waited out the rest of the year, expecting a possible attack I guess.

In the North the Danes and Merovingians joined forces and marched south. They took control of the Cathedral in Nivernais, the Monestary in Burgundy, and the Abbey in Dijon and turned them over to priests of the Bretonnian Church. The Burgundian people were confused and unsure of who this Pope John fellow was...but since the King had given the Danes and Franks permission he must be the real Pope....isn't he?

With their task in Burgundy done, the merovingians and Danes marched north, and then back to their own lands.

548AD: In the spring, King Hermann led his Lombards, and allies, east over the alps into Liguria. The region was quickly over run and pacified. The Bretonnian forces werent happy. They had hoped the Western Empire would side with them and the land would be open for their troops to march through. Genoa also was defiant and Hermann ordered the Bretonnian forces to set up siege lines. Meanwhile a Merovingian force of mercenary ships blockaded the harbor.

Legate Gedna hadn't been idle. When he learned of the Bretonnian forces invading Liguria he hurried north with his legions.

A small force tried to slip into Rome from the sea. But this force was annihilated. Bishop Boniface was killed in this attempt.

In June of 548AD the Empires troops attack the Bretonnians besieging Genoa.

As the two sides line up and prepare for combat, the two respective Popes emerge from the ranks and move toward the area between the armies. Each began to exort and encourage the armies that they represent the true church. Gedna's forces had already decided this and had fought a brief civil war to purge the unfaithful, so Johns words didnt effect them really. Agapetus's words did find the hearts of some of the Lombards and Burgundians. The Celtic allies from Powys and Reget watched in horror as the Germanic tribes began to argue amongst themselves. In the end about 20% of the Germanic warriors cross the field and side with the Empire. The Lombard general Grunwald amongst them. The Duke of Asturia, Iberian feudal ally of the Lobards, also marched off the field and marched home.

Finally the two sides met in a thunderous clash that echoed out across the harbor to the ears of the blackading mercenaries. The battle was very intense form the start. Imperial legions hacking at their one time allies. Germanic warriors swing Axes against their cousins and brothers. The Celts from Britain fighting for a faith they dont even adhere to. In short, it was a very Chaotic affair. The casualties on both sides mounted. All afternoon the two sides bloodied one another. General Grunwald was killed fighting against King Hermanns bodyguard.

Over on the left flank, Prince Urien, of Reget, was downed by a sword thrust from a Legionnaires gladius. His Honorguard of Hevay Elite Infantry was able to pull the wounded prince back to the safety behind the lines.

As evening came the field was littered with the dead. Both sides had taken heavy casualties. Gedna Rallied what forces he could and made one last charge. The Bretonnian's rallied what they could to meet the Empires attack. King Hermann and King Donatein, of Burgundy, fought side by side against the Imperial cavalry charge. In the hazy twilight the two sides slaughtered eachother.  King Hermann fell, wounded, from a Cavalryman's sword stroke. The Bretonnian forces began to give ground and fall back. King Donatein took a lance in the hip while trying to fight a rear guard, his warriors carried him to safety. The Bretonnians retreated from the field. The Imperial troops were to shattered and tired to pursue.

Pope Agapetus looked over the field of broken bodies, shattered lances, and spears. Over 52,000 men had fallen. An amazing number when you consider only a little over 70,000, total,  fought. Both sides had been guttted. The flower of the Catholic armies in Southern Europe had been slain.

Chief Wulfhere

Diplomacy: none

In March 546, Wulfhere stands before the council for the Teutonic Tribes, but it is Lord Est who speaks first.  "Why do you stand before us, dripping water and smeared with mud?"   Wulfhere spoke:

Something very important has happened.  It occurred just minutes ago.  Frothgar and I were walking near the river, discussing the issues before the tribe.  The biggest problem as you know is the bafflement about religion.  We decided that if we wanted guidance about the Christian churches, we should pray in the Christian manner.  Who would know better than the God himself?  And if he didn't exist, no harm would be done.

No sooner were we done when up from the river rose a column of water.  It moved straight towards us, stopping a few feet away.  It talked to us in a loud rumbling voice like thunder.  "You should kneel to show your respect.  Kneel!" boomed the voice from the column.
"I do not kneel to any man or beast.  Other gods have other ways," I yelled back defiantly.  I was immediately struck down.  I found myself lying in the mud, soaked to the skin, and my head ringing from the blow.

There is only one God.  Now you show proper respect."  I think that sound was chuckling.
I lifted my face out of the mud to ask, "The God of the Christians?"
"Yea, verily."

Frothgar learns from his father's mistakes.  He threw himself into the mud before he asked from his stomach, "We are confused by the many kinds, which church is the true one?"  I'm glad he did that.  I was too dazed to think of it.

"They are all my people, but some stray farther than others.  You will join with the followers of Revonius."  Then the column melted away into the ground.  It left a big hole and the water in it steams.

"Well that's plain enough," said Lord Est.  "How do we perform the conversion?'
"We dip ourselves into the river with the proper ceremony."
"That will be very cold!  The ice just broke!  Is this supposed to be a test of faith?"
"No, that's not the purpose.  It symbolizes the washing away of sin, I believe.  Warm water would work better.  I know!  The pool left by the column of water!  It would be ideal."
And so the multitudes of Teutons, Est and Kurans all gather at the pool, and amidst the wafting of the warm vapors lifting from the surface, they all are baptized into the Christian faith.

THE TEUTON CAMPAIGNS
