WESTERN EUROPE

Mercenaries:
16i, 11c, 5s, 6w, 5t

THE KINGDOM OF REGET

King Lyr Marini

Diplomacy: none

Cynfarch returned to Caer-Ebrauc to take care of the affairs of state. He promptly fell ill. The sickness lingered on for months and by the spring of 542AD the King was dead. The Queen gave birth to Cynfarch’s child just 2 months after he passed. She too died, from childbirth. The son lived. The King’s younger brother Lyr Marini was in Scone. There he had successfully overseen the final conversion of the city to Celtic Christianity. He was shocked to learn he was now King.

Young Prince Urien supported his uncle becoming King. He then gathered the Reget navy and patrols the North Sea and British Channel.

The Hebrides and Shetland Isles were given more autonomy, but retained a military alliance with Reget.

THE KINGDOM OF NORWAY

King Knut

Diplomacy: Uppsala (nt) oopland (nt)

Things were quiet in Norway. Talks with the Danes resulted in large sums of gold traveling from Norway’s coffers into the Danish treasury. In return the Danes agreed to share tributary status in Uppsala. Unfortunately the Norwegians sent a sorry diplomat.

Lord Jens passed away in 545AD

THE KINGDOM OF DENMARK

King Magnulf

Diplomacy: Holstein (fa) Uppsala (fa) Saxony (c) lausatia (c ) Pomerania ( c ) Kauyavia (t ) Meissen (c) smaland (ea) Danzig (c )

The Danes were extremely busy. The chaos resulting from their conversion to Catholicism meant many, many diplomatic efforts were needed. Sadly they had to few diplomats. The end result was that most of the rebel regions acknowledged Denmark had some vague claim but that’s about it.

Missionary activities in Danzig, Kuyavia, and Smaland saw some converts won.

THE KINGDOM OF THE LOMBARDS

King Hermann

Diplomacy: Estremaduria (nt) Talavera (nt) Aragon (fa) Astruria (fa) Leon (nt) Salamonica (nt)

The Lombards sent colonist into New Castille; they also increased settlers in Andalusia. They sent diplomats throughout Iberia. They weren’t very well received by the Arian Christian population however.

On an interesting note the Roman Catholic Bishop Desiderus was ordered to transfer over 5,000 Visgoth slaves to the Eastern Roman Empire, they sailed under guard to Hereclea.

With all the confusion in Rome over the Pope controversy no news was heard about the clergy taking part in the slave trade.

THE KINGDOM OF ARMORICA

King Cadfael

Diplomacy: none

King Geriant ordered the port city of Cherbourg built in Normandy. He then promptly died. Cadfael became king without challenge.

Lord Jean Claude again traveled into the Bay of Biscay to conduct piracy. No trade routes travel through those waters however so the Lord didn’t bring home any loot.

THE KINGDOM OF THE MEROVINGIANS

Bishop Alwhin preached the Gospel to the Saxon tribes in Thuringia.

Missionaries sent into Westphalia complete the conversion of the people there to Catholicism.

THE KINGDOM OF BURGUNDY

King Donatein

It paid off; the Queen gave birth to a son in 543AD and another boy in 545AD

Missionaries were also sent into Catalonia.

THE KINGDOM OF BAVARIA

King Horsa

Diplomacy:

No turn sent in

THE KINGDOM OF THE CROATS

King Ptreskov

Diplomacy: none

The Croats muster their forces then march east into their ancestral homelands. Their they quickly subdue the locals and began several years of enslavement of the Slavic folks their. Bakony, Alford, Banat and Croatia are all enslaved. The slaves are marched back to Verona. The Croats suffer some casualties but the haul of slaves more than makes up for it.

With a new batch of slaves on hand the Croats felt magnanimous and gave back the slaves they had taken from the Eastern Orthodox Church.

THE WESTERN ROMAN EMPIRE

Emperor Cronan, Restitutor Orbis, Redditor Lucis Aeternae

Diplomacy: Naples (f) spoleto (f) Corsica (t) Switzerland (f)

The Empire saw a period of great prosperity and growth. Diplomats were able to unify the Empire, and peace had come finally. Things were so good the empire saw the Cities of Rome and Genoa had a population explosion.

A son Romulus was born in 542 AD

The only sad event was the death of Emperor Ulpris in 545AD. Cronan succeeded him without issue.

THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH

Pope Agapetus, Patriarch of the true faith.

Diplomacy: none

THE GREAT SCHISM
Pope Ysgarran grew increasingly Ill. He feared his time on this world was coming to an end. So he set about trying to ensure that the next Pope would continue the work of uniting the Catholic and Celtic Churches. Revonius was his man. Revonius was an old, older than Ysgarran, priest with a kind heart and a love of God. Unfortunately he was no politician. When Ysgarran passed away in the early summer of 541 AD, Revonius was immediately challenged by the cardinals to decide who would be the next Pope. Agapetus was the conservative’s choice. He argued for maintaining the status quo and not compromising with the Celtic Church. Both of the candidates appeared before the council of Cardinals:

“We must not let ourselves be led astray by every wind of doctrine” explained Agapetus “ Revonius makes it sound all good and well. Even Godly. But the Devil often comes as an angel of light!” he cries as he turns and points a finger at Revonius and his supporters.

Revonius sputters “How dare you…I serve the same God as you.” Agitated and frustrated Revonius could make no real argument back. As I said he was a kindly man of God, not a politician with the gift of oratory.

In the end the Council of Cardinals was divided. A slight majority being conservative and Agapetus was declared Pope.

“From this day forward to consult with the heretic Celtic Church shall be considered an act worthy of excommunication!” this was Agapetus’s first bull.

Revonius and his supporters were in shock. They were unable to come to terms with the sudden and amazing turn of events and change in Papal policy. Many of the Bishops and Clergy outside of Italy were also taken back. In the end Revonius and his followers fled Italy to Britain. There he was declared Pope in the city of Glevum. The clergy in Britain and Northern Gaul declared for Revonius. Southern Gaul, Germany and Italy for Agapetus. The newly converted Danes, who had no clergy to guide them, wondered what the hell they had gotten themselves into.

The Chaos of the schism drew the Churches entire attention and many of the tasks the Church had wanted to accomplish were quickly forgotten.

THE EASTERN ROMAN EMPIRE

Maurice, Vasilevs, Avghoustos, kai Avtrokrator Romaion

Diplomacy: Ludgorie (fa) Kyklades (f) Morea (f)

Alexandros ruled from Constantinople and sought to set his Empire right. Years of war had seen the Empire shrink in size and power. Diplomats were ordered to shore up the internal alliances. But Bishop Erasmus did the most important diplomatic effort. Traveling north the Bishop took the young daughter of the Emperor, Maria, north. She married King Olaf of the Svear. The svear were reluctant at first but through careful persuasion the Bishop was able to get Olaf to see the wisdom of allying with the Empire and taking his people south. They traveled far and eventually settled in Morea. There they founded the city of Varingiapolos.

Alexandros was shaken when his wife died early in 541AD. The Emperor was thinking of re marrying some time later when he to fell ill and died. With no son of age the successor to the throne became a tense issue. Several factions began maneuvering. Prince Maurice, who had recently been released from captivity in Egypt, was able by will alone to seize the throne and get the other factions to back down. Maurice rules over a fractious empire. One where his political opponents know he has no heirs and that Alexandros’s house has but one male heir who is under age.

THE HORDES OF TEUTONIC TRIBES

Chief Wulfhere

Diplomacy: none

As the Teutonic Tribes wintered in Livonia, the heir, Frothgar married a daughter of the Est

Wulfhere, ClanChief of the tribes addressed the assembled people:
"We have carved out a new land for ourselves, but our task is not finished. We need to provide for the safety of future generations. Let us go south, gathering allies and putting down potential enemies. And while we are away, I have arranged for those who are skilled in such things, to improve our future homeland, making it much more fertile and prolific."
The crowd wondered at this last, but Wulfhere had led them well in the past, and the tasks they had to do had long been known. They enjoyed the wedding feast to the full, and after recovering, prepared for the journey to come.
As the journey started, Frothgar asked Wulfhere about a rumor he had heard. "Is it true that the East Roman Emperor is sending a daughter to marry into the Svear? How can this be? Didn't we destroy them?"
"No, the Danes, in the strange way of these city folk, granted mercy to the last of the Svear. But we have taken everything of value from them. They are no danger to us."
"I despair of ever understanding such strange people, Father. Why would they do such a thing? And why didn't they go on to destroy Norway, of whom I know they have little liking?"
"There is more to statecraft then force of arms, my son. And it is time you learned of these things." They discussed politics and the relations of nations all the way to Polotsk.

THE DNEPR CAMPAIGN
541AD: The Teutons and their Est allies march south into Poltosk. The Danish presence, they’re giving them free passage, not that they could have stopped them anyway. In Polotsk the Teotons met up with the Goths. The Goths were given grain by the Danes. While the Gothic people ate, their King, Dameric, talked with Wulfhere. The two peoples made plans for war and set out for Kiev. The unprepared Boguslav homeland was easily overrun by the combined Teuton/Goth assault. The pitifully small Boguslavic army was annihilated. Tsar Serge died with his men. The combined barbarian armies then pressed on and sacked the Capital, Boguslav. The armies wintered and celebrated their victory as they divided the loot.

In the far north the Teutons had left their Kuran allies with the task of raiding the surrounding regions of daugava and Courland. Being simply raided the lands got off easy compared to some.

542AD: The Est are ordered south, they invade Pechneg and quickly subdue the region. Then loot and enslave the populace.

The Kuran march south and rejoin the Teutons who had invaded Goryn. This region suffered the same fate as the Pechneg. Looted and enslaved.
