Not much new really, things
are running pretty smoothly and with the new players in Leon and
Lombardy there are now no openings in Western Europe.

Hidden NPN
Openings
Hidden NPN positions are an
addition to normal Lords play. They cost nothing but can be taken
away at anytime. A Player can run one, or more, Hidden NPNs as
long as there is no conflict of interest. For more information

The History
of the World
Eastern Europe
Estonia continued to integrate the northern Baltic States when
the chief Est debated the benefits of a united north in
Veposkaya against the Viking invaders. His nation has joined the
growing ranks of civilised kingdoms. Old Vladimir passed
away in spring 1036 AD, leaving Kiev to his son and heir Aleksandr.
The new Rus prince continued his efforts to convert the Pagan
north by persuading the Estonian chief to listen to the
scriptures of Christ and the Orthodox way. With the current
situation in Constantinople, where Michael has openly
revealed his intention to reunite the Christian churches, Kiev
now sees itself as the paramount leader of the Orthodox Christian
world. Ageing Jagiello decided it was time to leave a
lasting legacy of his long and prosperous rule. Gathering his
personal guard and feudal lords the king of Lithuania marched
west to integrate Poland into his growing nation. The Lithuanian
army mainly foot but with some lightly armed horsemen to act as
skirmishers and scouts, crossed the border into Kauvayia in early
1035. This force of over 5000 men easily overcame the small local
garrison. Jagiello then pushed on to Warsaw itself. Stiff
resistance from Boleslav’s Poles forced the Letts to
pause outside the fortress of Lublin before finally
overwhelming the outnumbered defenders. The losses were
staggering, the entire Polish army of over three thousand men
were either killed or scattered, many going west to live as
mercenaries. The Lithuanians themselves fared better but still
their losses were over a thousand men. The lord of Masuria dying
from his wounds and his men deserting back to their homeland. The
Polish province of Pomerania has severed its ties with Poland
following their defeat. In Armenia another ageing ruler dies. Gagik
has left his troubled kingdom to his son and heir Valurian.
The conversion of Edessa has continued and it was this that was
rumoured to have reduced their status. Gagik was lucky
when he made the decision to marry one of his daughters to the
Isaurian Shah. The old ruler of this province died suddenly and
the new Shah quickly declared his support for his brother-in-law.
Nikos of Thessaly married Helena, the daughter of Samuel,
and took his place at his Emperor’s right hand. Meanwhile
the Bulgarian ruler readied his battle-hardened cavalry against
the threat of the Bulgar horde. Luckily, no invaders were seen
crossing the Bulgarian frontier. Siavan of Abasigia’s
last wish was to see his over-burdened nation debt free and
prosperous. With the marriage of his son to the daughter of the
Galatian ruler he might be about to see his dying wish. Abasigian
dignitaries attempted to convert the prosperous pagan region of
Taman to Orthodoxy but their words fell upon barren ground. While
in Byzantium, Michael married his Theodora in a
Catholic marriage ceremony presided over by the Pope. The
Patriarch of Constantinople was furious. Everywhere amid the
giant sprawling city black robed priests preached against the
teachings of Rome while gentle tongued palace clerics praised the
bravery and insight of their mighty Emperor in attempting to seal
the breach driven between the great Christian doctrines. The will
of the people swayed from Rome to Constaninople and back again
and already mobs had appeared in some of the poorer quarters. It
seems as if a gigantic boulder has been pushed to the top of a
high and treacherous ridge. On one side stands the Vatican and
the other the Orthodox Patriarchy. Whichever way the
deadly stone is pushed it seems sure it will take many innocents
on its way back to stable ground.

Who will spare me from these bloody ruinous raids? How will
England ever be great when Viking and Celt ravage our lands? Ralf,
King of England and Wales, successful conqueror of the upstart
Scots, screamed aloud as he could do little to stop the
persistent and deadly Orkneyjar looting and Welsh pillage. The
English king’s mighty army of nearly 12000 men-at-arms were
busy attending to the Scots when a small army strangely calling
themselves ‘The Free Welsh’ or even more obscure ‘
The Sons of Gwydion’ evaded the north travelling English and
set about looting the rich midlands of England. If this was not
enough the Okneyjarans Bathal and Kirual set about
the coasts of England, Wales and the Low Countries, taking Saxon
wealth back to Kirkval. The other Norse nations were ominously
quiet. Ulf, King of Denmark, was finally persuaded by an
overwhelming diplomatic entourage from Hanover to align his
kingdom firmly with the Holy Roman Empire. Meanwhile, Olaf of
Uppsala found he had to deal with several pressing issues
concerning the smoking of Mackerel.

At last Marcus was successful in his attempts to push
the rebellious Duke out of Sicily. Hiring every available sword,
spear and shovel, no matter how base or treacherous, the Prince
of Salerno swept up every able man willing to take his gold and
set sail for the island. His ally Geovanni had slipped
onto the islands months before and was busy trying to persuade
the Duke’s men to forsake their treacherous lord. Many were
tempted by the chance to return home to Naples, Calabria and
Apulia but their captains held fast and the brave Geovanni was
lucky to escape execution. The forces of Salerno overwhelmed the
Calabrian defenders even though they were well prepared and
better led. Their captains showed more metal than the rebellious
Duke who reportedly fled at the first sign that his army might
lose. Palermo opened its gates without a fight when the local
garrison declared their support for Marcus. Corsica and
Moslem Sardinia also decided to rejoin the Principality. The
imprisoned Peter was still alive, although badly injured
from torture and malnutrition. Poor Marcus however did not
see the liberation of his nation’s goal. Calabrian
supporters cruelly ambushed him shortly after the first battle
and he quickly dies from his wounds. The newly released Peter became
the next in a long line of Regents to protect an infant Prince. Henri
has increased the walls of La Rochelle in anticipation, no
expectation, of a Norman attack. However, it was into Anjou that
the Norman army of six thousand regular infantry, supported by an
equal number of quickly pressed peasants and townsfolk,
triumphantly marched. The Bishop Gregory led the invasion
rapidly overcoming the defending Angevin forces of two thousand
men-at-arms. The Normans lost over a thousand men taking Tours
but the walls were not high enough to keep the northerners out.
Anjou fell and with the death of Foulques from old age and
imprisonment the nation fell apart into anarchy. Auvergne,
Gascony, Limousin and Orleans all reverted to local rule. The
Burgundians set about improving their presence on the
Mediterranean by building the city of Cannes in Provence.
Nivernais and Nerdone were finally fully incorporated into the
Kingdom. Alfonso of Leon has renamed the city of Leon. It
will now be called Ciudad Leon. What would have been a successful
mission to Anjou was destroyed by the Norman invasion. Lombardy
has built Leghorn in Tuscany and increased the size of Cavalleri
and Vincencia. Their efforts in Tuscany were rewarded by the
integration of the province into Lombard lands. Cordoba continued
to consolidate by building the port of Algiers and by gaining the
ear of the Zirid Emir in Mahidia. The new Pope, Bishop Wilfred
of London, has taken the name Pius II. The Vatican
continued its efforts to convert the Byzantine and presided over
the marriage of the Emperor to his Catholic bride, Theodora.
The Holy Roman Empire spent more time attempting to persuade its
subjects to closer ties with Hanover. Oda was pleased when
Ulf of Denmark promised to aid the Emperor in his
endeavours. The German ruler was after all half Danish.

The once expansionist Buwayid Emirates have recently been
concerned with matters internal and spiritual. Feeling that the
Moslem world has been disadvantaged by an active Catholic church Al
Qa’im has restored the Abasi Caliph to full religious
status and Baghdad has once again achieved Holy City status in
the eyes of Sunni Moslems. The Emperor in Zandj peacefully passed
away after a period of gradual integration and consolidation. A
new and dynamic wave of activity has swept over the Hatamid. The
Levant has promised aid in gold and Said as Dawla hopes to
eventually integrate the valuable region fully into his nation.
Flexing his military strength the Hatamid Emir sent a sizeable
force south into Petra to swell the Damascus coffers. The
disbelieving Petrans have sworn eternal revenge on their powerful
neighbour. The regent of Ibo, Mpwanzi, set about
strengthening his young ward’s realm by building a new city
in Oyo, named Akwanga. Ibo itself was not ignored and is now the
largest city in west and southern Africa. The Rassid Imanat of
Yemen continued to gain a foothold in East Africa by a series of
dynastic marriages to the rulers of Adal. Barmki and his
sister have both married into the Emirate. The aggressive
policies of Yemen have caused a series of diplomatic seesaws to
occur in the regions of Danakil and Djibuti. Old Hakim died
suddenly in 1037 but his son and heir Ali bin-Hakim, a
strong but unpopular choice, quickly secured power in the
Caliphat. The loyal Fatimid supporters, Gehkhan and Rhavas,
have now converted one in four Cypriots to Islam. Memphis
continues to grow and could soon be a contender to Constantinople
itself as the greatest city in the western world. The Nubians
have forsaken their recent aggressive expansion and concentrated
on consolidating their gains. Ilig is currently in mourning after
the loss of its great leader Ahmad Arslan. It was in his honour
that his son changed his name from Mahmud to Ahmad. The new
Khan’s counsellors have been active in persuading him to
regain the regions lost in the wake of the Kasmiri raids a decade
ago and to even pursue the looters back to Pavapavura itself. Angered at the refusal of Leon y
Navarre to return the Moslem provinces in Spain to Ummayad rule
the Caliph sent a strongly worded letter to Alfonso outlining his
terms for a peaceful settlement. Meanwhile, his aides continued
the integration of northern Africa into the Caliphate.

India
A strong delegation from Kashmir continued to press their
claim on the rich nation of Sahis by consulting with their Raja
in Lahore. It was in this great city that the Kasmiris found
themselves when an army of over sixteen thousand led by Parminder
and Krishna attacked from Kaunaj. The Sahis defenders
in Tarian numbered only two thousand and encircled and trapped
were slaughtered by the invaders. The main Sahis army held the
forces of Rajput briefly before fleeing to the safety of Lahore.
The invaders then attempted a costly assault on the high and well
defended walls of this ancient city. Nearly eight thousand
attackers died in the impetuous attack. And Lahore still stood.
The Rajputana Emperor found himself trapped inside the city and
was ritually impaled by the defenders. Vija-jaya now found
himself as the new Emperor and presided over the building of the
new cities of Charkhari in Chitor and Rewa in Jilhoti. Sahis, now
finding itself virtually overrun by the forces of Kaunaj and at
war with the Empire, willingly leapt at the chance to ally with
Kashmir. The Pala of Bengal has continued his consolidation in
the south by gaining a diplomatic foothold in Kalinga.

East
There has been a quiet period of growth and prosperity in the
region of East Asia. Japan, Khitan, Goryeo and the Da Song have
all been busily consolidating their positions and improving the
wealth of their nations. Song Hsui-Chi ceremoniously
married the daughter of Xi Qlin, warlord of Chang’An.
This momentous occasion sealed a strong alliance between the two
Han nations. It was the efforts of ageing Cho Zen that
brought close ties between the Da Liao and Goryeo. Unfortunately
the success of the mission was marred when Cho Zen died on
the voyage home. The happiness of the Japanese court was
disrupted by the death of the Regent Fujiwara and his
chosen successor Onoshi in a freak boating accident. Both
men were attempting to pull light punts by means of giant kites
when the lines became entangled. Fujiwara refused to let
go and was violently wrenched from his boat. Brave Onoshi dived
in to save him but both were drowned in the rescue attempt. The
new regent, Fujiwara’s son, was heralded as his
successor. The warlord Shu-yin, King of Nan Chao, decided
to improve the wealth of his kingdom at the expense of Annam. Two
thousand loyal troops augmented by double that number of rapidly
conscripted auxiliaries, feudal levies and a small Corp of siege
engineers, moved into Annam in order to quell any resistance to Shu-yin’s
aims. The forces of Nan Chao easily swept aside the defenders and
crowded around the walls of Tonkin. Unfortunately for Shu-yin
Tonkin’s walls were too large for a rapid assault and so the
invaders settled down to enjoy the fruits of their conquest in
the province. Shu-yin was pleased to see that his only
losses were the irelevant peasants who made up a large part of
his army and some feudal levy from Guizhou, although he did miss
the conversation of their warlord. Dying as he did in the first
attack on Annam. intent on improving the prosperity of the house
of T’ang the warlord arranged the marriage of his spinster
daughter Lan-zhu to the lord of Gouangxi. Although a
honour, the very age of Lan-zhu prevented Shu-yin
from the coup he desired. His son and heir Lu-shan married
into the Korat dynasty along with his other daughter Lu-shan.
The emperor in Khemer continued with his expansion of the cities
of Feranga and Chi. The forces of Thaton pushed into Pegu and
Manipur, reliving the former from the invading Burmese. The large
Burmese force prevented the Thatonese from taking Manipur. In a
short and bloody battle both sides lost nearly four thousand men.

Diplomacy of cities
and regions is now separate. You will receive separate allied
leaders for both regions and cities and I am currently updating
the database. If I’ve missed any please let me know. I will
not now be implementing the extra action cost chart for the
foreseeable future. This is due to its extra complexity and I
just don’t have the time! Once the stats support program has
finally been written (almost there) then I will include it and,
hopefully <g>, we will start to see the end of the niggling
little errors. These are mainly due to having time constraints on
the time I can spend on the game.
