Jarldom of Denmark (Viborg in Denmark)

(Roman Catholic Seafaring Open Empire)
Cnute,
Diplomacy:  Musa (nt), Trondheim (p), city of Trondheim (p)

Svien's daughter Gwen had been promised in marriage to William Rufus of Normandy, but no arrangements were made to send her south and no Norman delegation came north...so the marriage never took place.

Svien took his men north to fight the norse (see Norway)

Svien would not long enjoy his success, a year and 3 months after Trondheims fall Svien would die. His sone Cnute became Jarl and no one dared challenge him for Cnute was feared by many as a tough and brutal warrior.

Jarldom of Norway (Trondheim in Trondheim)

(European Pagan Seafaring Open Empire)
Olaf Tryggvason,
Diplomacy:

The Pope had been trying to get the Norse to convert to Christianity for some time now. The Pagan Norse had refused all attempts. This did not mean they were particularly hostile to the Pope. I mean they did help some in the war in Spain. But the Pope was not a man who could tolerate pagans so he sent word to the northern nations "The pagan King must fall." This was not a crusade, just a bit of urging on the Pope's part. England, Scotland, and the Danes accepted that urging. The Scots did not travel to Norway, instead they focused on gobbling up some of the Norse Islands.

The Danes arrived off Trondheim first. They had 200 warships and 10,000 men. The Norse had only half as many ships and somewhat fewer men. Jarl Svien Forkbeard ravaged the fleet of Jarl Olaf one eye off the coast. The Danes lost 18 ships and 1,000 men, but the Norse retreated short 38 ships and 4,400 men. The Danes then moved inland to secure control over the region. A few months after the battle a Albion fleet arrived off the coast and was looking to land. While both sides may have been answering the Pope's call, neither was actually friendly with the other. The Danish men wanted to slaughter the Albionese like in the days of old but Svien growled at them and kept them in check and reminded his men that plunder awaited them in the city of Trondheim. The men of Albion seeing they were outnumbered and not wanted sailed along the coast for a bit looking for opportunitites to hurt the Norse but then returned home empty handed.

With the region pacified, Svien turned his eye on the city of Trondheim. Jarl Olaf had grown to confident in his position and as a result he had never properly fortified the city. The Danes stormed into it. The Norse tried to put up a fight but badly outnumbered now, after their defeat at sea, they were simply crushed. Olaf one eye died fighting. The Danes looted the norse treasury.

The Norse realm was centralized at Trondheim. Most of their outlying realms only gave tribute out of fear. As a result with the death of the Jarl and the taking of the city the realm collapsed. The last pagan Kingdom of the north had fallen.

Kingdom of Albion (London in Sussex)

(Roman Catholic Civilized Open Empire)
Edmund, King of Albion
Diplomacy: none

Edmund gathered up his army and loaded the part of it he could on his ships (he did not have the capacity to carry it all) and set sail for Norway. (see Norway)

He returned home angry that the Danes had prevented his army from getting any of the spoils.

The Kingdom of Scotland (Edinburgh in Lothian)

(Roman Catholic Civilized Open Empire)
William II, King of the Scots
Diplomacy: Orkney (pt), Hebrides (pt).

The Scots heard the Pope's call and set out to take some of the Norse Islands. The 2,000 strong army landed first on Orkney and the Hebrides. In neither case was any resistence met. The poor island folk had been paying tribute to the Norse Kings and now they'd pay it to the King of the Scots.

Norman.gif (5192 bytes)

(Roman Catholic Civilized Open Empire)
William Rufus, King of Normans and Romans
Diplomacy: Sicily (p)

With the help of the Holy Father in Rome the city of Venice was rebuilt.

Duke Robert gathered his army and was on his way to Rome when he grew ill and died. His son William was proclaimed Duke and carried on for his father. William was crowned King of Italy by the Pope in Rome. Rome was a city in a bit of turmoil. The walls had been torn down and the city was clearly being enlarged and renovated. It was also clear the Pope's men were searching for something or someone and that they had not yet found what they were after. But William did not dally long in Rome, he headed the army south. Crossing at Calabria the Normans fell upon the saracen held island. In short order Sicily had been liberated from the infidel. Mosques were burnt and the worship of Islam was outlawed. Conversion to Catholocism was compulsory, those who resisted were put to the sword.

Prince Friedrich, who was supposed to be on a diplomatic tour of Italy for the King left Norman service and headed north to Germany to seek his inheritence (see The Holy Roman Empire)

The Principality of Catalonia ( Barcelona in Catalonia )

(Roman Catholic Seafaring Open Empire)
Domenico I Orseolo, Duke of Venice, Prince of Catalonia, Count of Barcelona
Diplomacy: Barcelona (+2yfc), Baelerics (t)

With a bit of a painful hearth Domenico hears of the news that the Normans have rebuilt Venice. But he does not linger to long on the past and sets about to see that his realm has a solid foundation for the future.

Henri,

The French continued to try and consolidate their holdings in Spain. At home King Robert was preparing to move off for more talks in Rouen when he took ill and died. His som Henri became King.

The Holy Roman Empire

(Roman Catholic Civilized Open Empire)
Otto IV, Holy Roman Emperor, King of Germany, Italy and Burgundy, Duke of Saxony, Servant of the Apostles.
Diplomacy: Trier (ne), Munich (f)

Emperor Henry declared that the regions and cities of Austria, Liguria, Tuscany, Savoy and Romagna would hence forward be independant. In addition the papal legate and scribes that had been assisting the govn't were sent back to Rome. The Emperor's plans to reduce the govnt's burden went out the window when he died unexpectedly at the age of only 31. The court was in shock. With the Emperor so young there had been no hurry to appoint an heir, as such the succession was not settled. Leaders began to manuever almost immediately. Prince Hans was found dead with in the week. As word spread south to Norman lands Prince Friedrich, a man loyal to no one but himself, left Norman lands and headed into the Empire determined to stake his claim. Friedrich arrived to find Otto had killed all his rivals and was in firm control in Alsace. But Friedrich was a crafty one and he tried to sweet talk the army and courtiers to side with him against his elder brother. But the army remained loyal and Friedrich was caught and executed by Otto. Several regions had revolted in the turmoil and Otto had to shed a fair bit of blood, including that of two of his own brothers, but at last the Empire (or what was left of it) was firmly under his control.

The Roman Catholic Papacy

(Roman Catholic Civilized Religious Primacy)
Gabriel I,
Diplomacy: Slovakia (ch), Skane (ch), Lund (ch)

The Holy Father stayed in the Vatican where he over saw the work and renovations being done in Rome. He dispatched his Bishops far and wide (one even ending up in Africa to preach the Gospel) with gifts for various Catholic nations. In addition to crowning the new Norman Duke in Rome, the Pope ordered a school of learning built in Lyon. Reading and writing are gifts of God the Pope is often heard to say and he encourages all who can to teach the young these gifts.

Phocas I,
Diplomacy:

The Fatamid were a lost cause, their dynasty was in decay and decedant. Emperor Phocas was done trying to prop up Arab dynasties, it was time to recoup a little of the cost Rome had spent doing so.

When the Roman navy arrived in Alexandria it fell upon the much smaller (outnumbered 5-1) Fatamid navy in the harbor. At the same time the Emperor, who had been garrisoning the city for the Fatamids,  took control of Alexandria from within. They easily killed the 1,000 Fatamid defenders. The royal family was executed and the city sacked. The navy began took several trips but all the Roman army was evacuated to Antioch. As the last defenders departed the sacked city was set on fire. With the Fatamid royal family completely wiped out  (as well as all national leaders) and their capital destroyed the Fatamid empire fell into chaos.

When the Emperor arrived in Antioch he learned of the death of his wife in far off Constantinople. She had died young, but life even for nobility could be brutal and short.

The Khazar Khanate

(Asiatic Pagan  Nomadic Open Empire)
Quterkin, Khan of the Khazar
Diplomacy:

1031: "It is not fitting to send spies and assassins to do a man's dirty work. We, the Khazars, do not tolerate this sort of behaviour. It is weak and cowardly. One must face ones enemies on the field of battle as the gods demand. If the sniveling Ghaznavid leader is not prepared to meet the Khan of the Khazars face to face then the Khan shall arrange the meeting instead." growled Bulchan Khan.

This would be no small foray. The entire Khazar nation would march. Garrisons were pulled in, mercenaries hired and the locals in Persia, Zagros, Media, and fars were given local autonomy and told to keep obeying the Khan and sending tribute (down graded from P to Pt) if they wished to avoid death. Prince Alp, the Khan's heir died in his sleep while these arrangements were being made. As the army marched forth the Khan commanded the main army while the tribes and slaves marched with the allied Khans. East the army marched and at years end had reached Firoz Kohi.

1032: In the spring the host pusehd through Kash and Hazarajat without opposition from the Ghaznavids. In Hazarajat the old Khan grew ill and passed away at the age of 69. This left the untried Quterkin as the only royal Khazar male in power. Oaths were made to the new Khan and then the host pushed east into Afghanistan. The Ghaznavids had hired mercenary cavalry to join their own cavalry force that was drawn up behind a series of field fortifications. As the Khazar moved to attack the Ghaznavid mercenaries switched sides, the lure of Khazar gold was strong. The resulting battle was hard fought and raged for hours. The Ghaznavid had better training and their forts helped off set their lack of numbers. As evening came the two sides seperated, neither defeated. On the first day the crows were fed 4,800 Khazar and 6,400 Ghaznavid. As the second days battle began things were a bit more desperate for the Ghaznavid. The losses of the first day made the difference in numbers even more of an issue. The mercenary siege engineers and infantry of the Khazar took fort after fort and the Ghaznavid cavalry was called on to do more of the fighting. Prince Majid al Sari fought valiently to hold the line but he was killed and the Ghaznavid line came apart. The Khazar gave a wild cry as they turned the retreat of the Ghaznavids into a route. Men were cut down as all order was lost from the Ghaznavid ranks. The battle field was strewn with the Ghaznavid dead, and for miles to the east as the chasing Khazar speared men all the way to the gates of Kabul. The Ghaznavid lost 9,400 men of the 12,000 men they started the second day with. The Khazar meanwhile lost a mere 1,600 on the second day. The Ghaznavid survivors waited in Kabul as the Khazar finished the conquest of Afghanistan and then went into winter quarters.

1033: In the spring the Khazar began a passive siege of Kabul. The city did not have any stored food but still the Afghanis were a stubborn people and the siege dragged on for months and months. Finally the skeletal looking citizens of Kabul surrendered in late October. The Khazar killed the royal family and surviving troops then sacked the city in november before going into winter quarters.

1034: With Kabul in ruins and the Ghaznavid state collapsing, the Khazar loot Afghanistan and then enslaved the population which takes most of the year. In late fall the host crosses over into Und.

1035: Und is pacified, the city of Peshawar is put under passive siege. Peshawar does not hold out as stubbornly as Kabul did, but still it takes many months for it to surrender. The city is then sacked and the region looted as the year comes to a end.

Back in western Persia the lands of Persia, Zagros, Media, and fars (along with the cities there) revolt from Khazar rule. "The Khan has been gone nearly 5 years and we've no word (outside CCR) so they must not be coming back! We're free!"

Jarl Olaf was a man of adventure, he desired to be where the winds of fortune blew strong. As a result he convinced his loyal clans to follow him south to Spain. There was war in Spain and war meant adventure and the promise of adventure and wealth. But Olaf and his people settled across the straight in Morroco. The landed and subjigated the moors. They then enslaved them and pushed them across the border into Zirid where they'd be free (and not a problem). The Jarl set his people to begin constructing a new capital, to be called New Uppsala, while he took the fleet east. The Fatamids were in trouble as everyone knew, and so the Jarl and his men raided along the coasts of Algeria, Kabilya, and Tunisia before returning to their new home a bit richer.

While the King's diplomats worked at home to shore the internal strength of the realm, Lord Tlal once again set off on a mission of exploration. With 20 ships and 2,000 marines he sailed west across the open sea. The voyage soon found many small island chains and he began hopping from island to island making careful notes of locations. The natives weren't dark men like the voyage to the east had discovered, these men looked more like his own people. His exploration eventually took him to a group of Islands called the Marshalls where he came across a people who called themselves Moluccans and claimed to rule a much wider empire. After gathering supplies he sailed east back across the great ocean, by following the current his expedition came once more to the known world and arrived off the coast of Mexico. He had lost a hand full of ships along the way but the voyage had proven to be successful.
