Rumor had it that the Holy Roman Emperor had warned the Caliph that the Christians in Spain were his vassals. Well, that did not impress the Caliph at all.
'01: The Caliph marched north into Portugal and then began to cross the border into Leon at years end. In Andalusia Lord Qutluq enslaved the city of Seville.
A french army moved along the Spanish border and took up watch while Lord Matthias of the Holy Roman Empire arrived to take up defense in Catalonia.
'02: In the spring the pacification of Leon was completed. The Caliph left a garrison then pressed on into Old castille and brought it under submission as well. Lord Qutluq sacked and burnt Seville then marched the slaves to Cordoba and then his army headed south to Granada.
The French army crossed into Spain and joined the defenders at Catalonia.
A swedish navy arrived off Andalusia's coast and pagan viking warriors came ashore and began to pacify the region.
'03: The Caliph looted Leon, then began to enslave the populace. To the east, Lord Qutluq moved up the coast to Catalonia and a battle took place in June. The Muslim army was taken by suprise by the numbers of defenders, the Christians had twice the numbers as the Muslims. The Muslim host tried to fall back but the Christians brought them to battle. In a lop sided affair the Muslim army was thrashed, Lord Qutluq died along with 6,400 of his men, the Christians lost only a 1,000 men. The surviving Muslim army retreated to Valencia.
The Viking's looted Andalusia then boarded their ships and departed, this left Andalusia independant as no Cordoban forces remained. The Vikings once more at sea set their eye on Morocco at years end.
'04: The Caliph marched his slaves from Old Castille west into Leon, he then proceeded to loot that region brutally.
The Vikings fell upon Morocco as they had Andalusia, and once more looted the region then departed leaving it independant.
'05: The Vikings headed back north, and home. All other forces
remained in place and planned.

Vladimir,

(revolt)
Times of trouble in Kiev as Vladimir converted to the Christian Faith of the east. Most
of the realm stayed loyal and converted (out of fear) but a few regions revolted, as well
as Prince Svatopolk, the heir. The Prince tried to over throw his father in a palace coup,
but his brother Yaroslav and loyal guards put down the insurrection and slew Svatopolk in
the process. With order restored Vladimir took the army southwest and laid waste to Goryn
and Galich before marching back the inhabitants of those regions into slavery in Kiev.
Chernigov was one of the regions that revolted and refused to adopt Christianity but
Vladimir and his followers offered a marriage to them and a economic alliance was won in
the end. But the revolts weren't the only trouble, the Khazars and the Volga bolgars both
raided across the borders in the south east. Burning villages and taking slaves at will.

Mera,
Diplomacy: Suakin (t)
It is a tradition in this country for the leader of the country to exchange meals with
a local family. It is an ancient tradition
dating back to the founding of the country. It
is perhaps as much shrouded in myth as it is mired in bureaucracy. The selection of which family is an arduous process
involving submissions by various local leaders followed by investigations and eventually a
selection from eligible candidates. The
families themselves were not informed about where the king would be until the actual day
of the event. King Mera insisted upon the
process; in fact, he enjoyed meeting citizens outside of court and meeting their families. He had always enjoyed such encounters when he was
growing up and It helped to remind him what his work was for. The discussions could often put the far off
business of Court into an easy to understand perspective.
The tradition called for the King to dine at the home of the selected family
just before the beginning of the planting season and for that family to join him in at his
home at the end of the growing season of that same year.
At the gathering on the 971st year after the death of our savior,
the complexity of this process told the king two simple things that he thought he must
certainly change. First, no one seemed to know
how many people lived within his domain. Without
such knowledge how could he be expected to keep them safe?
Second, that the education he had received from his royal tutors was both
limited to their experiences and completely unavailable to the general public. Truth should not be the private domain of the
elite. He decided that day to provide
education wherever possible by founding a school system that would be open to the public
and available to as many as possible. The
center of that school system would be a college of scholars gathered in the

Mahmud and the Seljuks made a deal. While he marched off to war Mahmud left his lords behind to try and administer his sprawling empire. They were given order to grant more local autonomy to certain wilderness and mountain regions. Mahmud and his army meanwhile joined up with the Seljuks in Media in July of year '02.
The combined forces crossed the mountains and entered Ahvaz as year '02 ends. In the spring a Buhwayid army under prince Al'Basasiri showed up to try and repel the invaders. The young prince had over 47,000 men, but any confidence he had fled when his scouts began to report that over 170,000 of the enemy faced him. The young prince did his best but numbers, quality, and more experienced leadership doomed his efforts. The Buhwayids were crushed and fled in panic, all told the Buhwayids would lose 10 dead for every 1 of the enemy they killed. The young prince fled into Hahmar as the victors finished pacifying their conquest. The invaders by passed the walled city of Susa and crossed into Hahmar next. The Buhwayids retreated before them and yielded the land without a fight as year '03 ended. In the spring of '04 the invaders finished pacifying Hahmar and marched north into Mesopotamia. The young prince had just over 4,000 cavalry left and knew he could not stop the invaders, nor would his cavalry help in a siege of Baghdad so he fell back with his men into Mosul. His father would have to hold Baghdad with Allah's help. The invaders finished securing the pacification of Mesopotamia and began to set up siege lines as year '04 ended. With little (or no) help forth coming to the defenders of Baghdad it was only a matter of time. They did kill some of the besieging force but it was no where near enough to alter the outcome and the Caliph of the Buhwayids dies defending the inevitable breach that came and the city falls to the invaders.

The nations of northern India called together and decided and alliance was needed to fight against the threat of the Seljuks. Yet the nations soon would show that they had more to fear from each other than from nomads from the steppes.
'01: An army from Palas marched east into Maghada, there they were given guides and they then marched on to Benares lands with expectations that the army of Maghada would soon follow to join the grand coalition to defend Uttar Pradesh. But the Rajah of Benares had no intention of honoring the alliance "To hell with Hindu unity! March!" The army of Palas was set upon when it entered Rajput. Far from home and with no supply line behind them (as the Maghadans had betrayed them as well) the army of Palas was in trouble. The 21,000+ strong Rajput force hit the 15,000+ Palas force hard. Both sides had good leadership and though the Rajput force was larger more of its force was light units. Never the less the Rajput force prevailed and forced a orderly retreat by the army of Palas, both sides lost around 4-5,000 men. With barely 10,000 men left the Palans fell back and started marching east toward home. In September they would be hit by the Maghadans along the Palans tried to march through Maghada, the men of Palas still assumed the Maghadans were honoring the alliance. A bloody struggle turned into a rout when General Bankura of Palas was killed, panic spread amongst his leaderless army and they broke only to be cut down in great numbers, less than 3,000 of them would live to arrive in the safety of Gaur at years end.
'02: The army of Benares marched into Vatsa. The army of Uttar Pradesh stayed put at home and did not react, they had built massive numbers of field forts and were not about to be lured out from the safety those fortifications offered. Vatsa was pacified and the region looted, as year end came a passive siege of Kalanjara was began.
In the east the army of Maghada crossed into Nadavaria then forced a crossing across the lower Ganges and pacified Palas. The few remaining defenders of Palas retreated into Tamaralipti.
'03: The passive siege of Kalanjara was unremarkable and the city surrendered out of hunger in late summer. The Benares army brutally sacked the city, then set it on fire totally destroying the Uttar Pradesh city in a orgy of destruction.
In the east the Maghadan army lacked a navy so the port capital was put to a active siege. For weeks the attackers dug trenches and siege engines and both sides lost men to disease and fighting. Finally a breach was made in the western wall. The defenders put up a valiant defense but they were cut down, King Krishnagar fell in the fighting. The city falls and with it the nation of Palas crumbles into chaos.

Jayavarman,

The King was not a patient man, but he wanted the Baron of Lampung's men so he waited for the slow, prodding Baron to arrive with his 1,400 men. The King resisted the urge to call the Baron a lazy bastard. The King's assembled army finally marched and by year 1 they had arrived at the border of Cochin and Champa. The Champanese knew that the forces of Khemer would be coming since the Khemer navy had arrived a few months earlier and began a blockade of the city of Vijaya. In the spring of year two the Khemer army crossed the border and advanced deep into Champa. The King of Champa and his men moved to meet the invaders. With only 7,200 men the Champan army prepared to do battle with the nearly 14,000 invaders. The Khemer battle plan went poorly and the King blamed that bastard from Lampung again as the men of Lampung failed to follow his plans and this caused disorder on the right flank which the Champans took advantage of to end the first days battle in a draw that left 2,400 Khemer and 1,800 Champan dead on the field. The King was furious but he was not without a plan. A early morning march allowed the Khemer to steal the initiative the Champans were forced to react. The second days battle proved a disaster for the defenders as over half their remaining army (3,200 men) was killed and their King wounded, the invaders of Khemer lost a mere 800 men. The Champans fall back into Vijaya with their wounded King. But all is lost for them, with a besieging force outside and the harbor bottled up it was only a matter of time before starvation took its toll. Finally the city is forced into surrender. The Khemer plunder the meager Champan treasury and with all central authority gone the Kingdom of Champa collapses.
Back in Khemer the King's son was busy conducting a census and dealing with courtly
matters. In the west a city was built on the coast of Mon called Dakvytthdi.
