Industrial Stage Zero: The Medieval Era
Turn #46 1130 Anno Domini
Next Turn's Orders is due Tuesday, November 25th 1997

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Open Nations:  Due to changes in the format and my crazy vacation, there are lots of open nations available this turn.  These are:  Magadan, Wheel, Foy, Aotearoa, Yampi, Punjab, Zolyang, Samanid, Arran, Nubia, Sicily, Bella Coola, Miwok, Mogollon and the Raitoag.

New Stat Sheet Features:  With the coming of the Version 5.5 Revisions, I have been at work updating the stat sheet program:
Homeland Income: The regional Gold Point income of your homeland has been doubled.  This is regional GPv only, not the PWB.
Road and Port Spacer Code:  I have added '*' as the spacer code for those cities which are both road cities and port cities (The 5.5 Rulebook states that the spacer code is a '+').
Road Count:  This is now an automated feature which counts all road cities (r), road and port cities (*) and inland capitals (c).
Road Income Formula: The Road Income formula is now = (Road Count)2/2.

World Maps:  These will be available on demand for anyone this turn for $5.00.  If you just want the Old World, the cost will be $3.50 and the New World is $1.50 by themselves.  They will be updated and corrected to the latest turn published.

Cultivated Regions: All cultivated regions can be colonized to 2 Gpv. If you can somehow get a region intensely cultivated, you can then colonize it to 3 Gpv.

Diplomacy Results: (ne)=no effect.

Religion Action - Convert Pagan Chief (cpc): You can convert a neutral heathen region to your religion instead of having to resort to all those MW's. If your world religion (Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Hindu) can convert a pagan chief, the region will automatically follow.

Church & Mercantile NFP less: I have drastically reduced the amount of NFP a Religious Primate can get from his cathedrals. The same goes for Mercantile Combines.

Mercs: 20mc, 20mi

THE ZOLYANG HORDE
Dolkar
The Zolyang turned south into the land of the civilized freaks.  The unfortunate Samanids may have built great fortresses but without armies these were useless against mobile troops for the farms were left exposed.  The 102,000 cavalry force rolled into Khokhand and looted it.  Then Ferghana was raped.  The city there, Alma-Ata was assaulted and sacked.  The Zolyang then marched into Soghdia and molested the landscape then captured Samarakhand (The city garrison surrendered, much it did to save their worthless lives) which was also gutted.  Fattened with all that loot, the horde stopped and plopped on the burnt cinders of Soghdia.  Perhaps new pasturelands can be opened up here.

THE GREAT TAVOK HORDE (Cherkassy, Xi Xia, Tangut, Jark)
Layaidu, Khagan of the Steppe Peoples
The Tanguts grew weary of Samanid patronage, especially when the dole was cut off.  So the Xi Xia took the gravy train and turned it on its head.  They left Bogazgol going southeast.  The Great Horde raided Jowzjanan and Bactria and then went back to the steppe (They camped at Karluk in 1130).

THE SAMANID EMIRAT OF BUKHARA
Ali ebn-Sinjar, Emir of Bukhara
With two hordes wreaking much havoc in the land, the Samanid economy went to the pot.  Ali and his troops avoided the Tavoks as they raided the Silk Road.  The Zolyang made a path of destruction from Khokhand and Ferghana to Samarkhand.
MAP: Bogazgol became cultivated.  Samarkhand and Alma-Ata are 0 GPv sacked cities.

THE KARIMID SULTANATE OF ALEPPO
Baruod ad Din Faruk, Sultan of Aleppo
DIPLOMACY: Sinai(nt)
Despite all the hardships wrought upon the Sultanate by its enemies and barbarian hosts, the Karimids bounced right back.  General Konal led the charge with 32,500 knights, 12,500 infantry and 5 stone throwing constructs with 40 galleys off the Mediterranean coast.  In Misr, the Yemeni had reinforced Kalisma with new troops.  They had 3000 cavalry, 12,000 infantry and 3 ballistae inside the citadel.  However half the Yemen army defected and let the Syrians in.  This sudden act of deliverance saved Konal's army from a nasty crunch and spared also the population of Kalisma from hardships.  Those Yemeni troops that remained enemies were massacred ruthlessly.  Their leader and navy slipped away through the back door.  Konal, now joined by Ab'ul Ziha moved back east through the Sinai to Petra.  From there in 1128, they invaded Hijaz.  At Madina, the Zaidi made a stand.  The Karimids had 48,000 soldiers then against 10,000 Yemen archers.  Despite the overstretched supply line, the numbers told the story and the Zaidis were wiped out.  The Holy city of Mecca came under Karimid control by early 1130 (Konal had died from a drink of poisoned water).  Rumors spread that Hasan died but no one could find his body.  By the end of the new year, his son Faruk was firmly in control of Antioch.  The Empire had never been more powerful.

THE ZAIDI EMIRAT OF DANAKIL
Suleiman, Guardian of the Mandab Straits
DIPLOMACY: Zeila(ea), Aswan(nt)
Admiral Uraqu and Lahar ferried reinforcements to protect Kalisma but the Syrians had sprung a trap and recaptured their city.  Now the front was left exposed.  The reconstitued Karimid army swept into Hijaz and defeated Uraqu and Lahar near Madina in 1130.  They fled with the navy to Asir.

DIPLOMACY: Arguin(c)
Yehi was still attacking an attack by hordes but the ones he was thinking of were no longer even close to the African continent.  Yehi prepared for mass invasion anyway because Zorak is not Earth's friend.  At least that's what his harim girl favorite who is also a qualified psychoanalyst said.  Ehri in Sevilla found the Sacred Hairpiece of Apollo.  Obviously some kind of Romano-Pagan relic that the Ummayads had kept in a safe place away from their Muslim faithful.  Inspector Gadget reported that Arguin wanted huge bribes to be more friendly sooner.  Prince Marco was not a good husband.
MAP: Royal Roads have been detected going from Algeria's Kasanej to Kabilya's Port Sahib.  And then from Bogarta through Fez to Merrakesh's new port city Expresso (Do I detect a caffeine frenzy here?).  Cheliff had become (2/5) - just in case I forgot to mention that last turn.
