Industrial Stage Zero: The Medieval Era
Turn #37
1085 Anno Domini

Next Turn's Orders is Due: Monday, 18 November 1996

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Hunting Action: Code (H) Base Action Cost: 8 months (at least). Hunting requires a leader and a land army to perform. The army is going into a region and hunting wild game for their product: food, fur, ivory, oil, etc. Each region type produces a different yield:

Maximum Yields
Terrain Type Agro Res. Points Gold Points
Cultivated 1 0
Intense Cultivated 1 0
Wilderness 3 1
Steppe 2 2
Tundra 1 1
Mountain 1 1
Desert 0 1
Jungle 1 3
Island 1 0
Oasis 1 1
Sea Zone 1* 0*
*Some Sea Zones may produce an addition 2 Agro Reserve or 2 Gold as well. There are certain fishery and whaling zones but these do move.

In all hunting actions, each region's yield will be multiplied by the following factor: 10% x d6-5+modifiers.
The modifiers are: +Leadership of Hunting Leader.
+1 for each 10 units, max 10.
-Gpv.
-RRV (or 5 if none).
+1 for each additional 4 months.
-1 for each 5 PWB in the region, drop fractions.
-5 if the region has been hunted in the past 10 years.
-30 if the region has been depleted in game.

There are ecological costs to Hunting. If a region get hunted in twice in 10 years, the game will be depleted for 50 eyars and all further attempts to hunt will yield nothing. Sea Zones won't suffer from Hunting until the industrial era.

Oceanic Movement: All ocean going leaders and navies travel on coastal sea zones that border your own nation and those of all trade partners at the rate of 1 month per zone. Movement on all coastal sea zones not bordering your nation and your trade partners is 2 months per zone. Monsoon arrows will speed up travel by a factor of a half. Sailing against a strong current counts an additional month. Sailing into hostile waters (H code in the sea zone on your maps) costs an additional month. Travel on all mapped open ocean arrows and inter-island arrows is 1 month per arrow. Travel on non-mapped or partly-mapped open ocean arrows and inter island arrows is 4 months per arrow (as you are mapping them). These movement rules nullify the rules introduces around Turn 59 of Lords 10.

Nautical Stats Investments: All non-Renaissance (Tech 8) nations may not invest in Nautical Stats: Conduit Limit, Trade Range & Navigation. Any gold or NFP will be saved if attempted.

Maximum Nautical Stats: Here are the maximum levels for each of the nautical stats:

Tech Level Navigation Trade Range Conduit Limit
8 4 6 4
9 5 8 5
10 6 10 5
11 7 12 5

Undefined MSP (To Reiterate): You can convert 2m to 1t (and then demobizie it for NFP) if you FIRST pay 1 GP per MSP. These are privately owned ships and cannot be seized without consequence.

AGRO Harvests: I have adjusted the randomizer to fluctuate harvests about 33% either way. This should reduce the incidents of really bad harvests.

THE SAMANID EMIRAT OF BUKHARA
Ahmad III, Emir of Bukhara
DIPLOMACY: none
Ahmad made no apologies for his son's escapades. Sinjar had snuck out of the palace after curfew and rode over to Kumis where he abducted two Turkish princesses from Samolah. These, he took to the 'love citadel' at Tukharistan. Kalar seemed not to care about this for he was too busy fighting Hash Men. The Samanids kept themselves aloof while the Persian War continued.

ARRAN EMIRAT
Garif bin Katl, Governor of the Roughlands
DIPLOMACY: Dasht Kavir(ne)
"The treachery and deceit employed by the Blue Horde and Samoleh is an insult to civilized man. They have demonstrated that they are no more than murderous savages and must be stopped. This day - Allah leads us to protect our lands. By decree, I Katl ar Razar conquer and claim the territorires of Kumis and Jibal to rid the land of thieves."
-Ar Razar 1081.
With that and some Baghdad bullion, an army of 32,500 swordsmen rumbled down from the El Burz mountains to attack the 54,500 Turkish horsemen in Kumis. 6000 Dasht Kaviri joined them for the fight. The kleptomaniac king, the Kökohul Khan Kalar (alliteration on purpose), was bruised and beaten bloody before the battle by blackhooded, brutal Buyid bashers from Basra (another deliberate alliteration). He couldn't effectively use his numberic advange to confront Arran while bandaged up from head to toe. Defeated in battle, the Turks fled to Jibal. General Meserah who led the force, pacified the land and captured the treasure room in Samalah.
With 19,000 men left, Meserah pursued the 35,000 horsemen even though they were outnumbered. The battle was a draw and Meserah saw fit to withdraw, having lost so many men. In 1085, Katl died. He was 55. The new Garif took home a letter from the Dasht Kavir Khan asking the state to build a city by the Silk Road in his land.

THE KÖKOKUL EMIRAT OF SAMOLAH
Kalar, Emir es Samolah, Khan of the Kökohul
DIPLOMACY: Samolah Emirat(f)
In 1081, Blue Horde Khan Kalar prevailed upon what was left of the Samoleh PTB (powers that be) to unify his horde and theirs. It didn't take much persuasion after Kalar's conversion to Sunni Islam. Soon after, he was wounded by the bludgeons of a bawdry band of bastard Buyid ball bangers. But, the Khan had called on a mass conscription to bolster the new combined Kökohul and Samolah armies. Dissent in the ranks led to some mutinies that nullified the new blood.
Left with 54,500 cavalry, they posed a powerful forge against the sword of Arran. Fortune was not in favor of the Blue Turks. Kalar and his court fled Kumis having lost a battle near Samoleh. Later in 1083, Kalar made up for his loss by decimating the pursuing force at the Bekr Pass in Jibal. There was be a celebration because the Arrani had lost all their troops yet 27,500 horsemen still stand in Jibal.

THE CIPSAC HORDE FEDERATION
Dökjoin the Ghirmak, Khan of Cipsac
DIPLOMACY: none
After killing all their slaves, the 67,000 cavalry Cipsac Federation went on a rampage of looting through the steppe. However, they used inaccurate maps and got lost. So they looted Suvar and stumbled into Kama Bolgar. This was a rich land so it was looted before the 100,000 infantry reaction force had time to catch them. Rezh, Nogai, Uze and Cim were all attacked and looted. That elicited a response from the local tribes and their new Cuman protectors (27,000 cavalry). The battle dented the Cipsac and killed the main host leader. Thus the Ghirmak tribe was able to unite the whole federation under their banner.

THE CHERKASSY HORDE (Xi Xia, Tavoc, Tangut, Jark,)
Layaidu, Khagan of the Steppe Peoples
DIPLOMACY: none
Layaidu's demand for tribute from Europe was only partly successful. About 14,000 pounds of silver was delivered to his feet, not enough to feed, clothe and equip all his fighting men. The slaves had to go. The allies were then stiffed. Both the Cuman the Cugin tribes left under disagreeable circumstances. With only 282,500 riders left (listen to me, 'only'?), the Cherkassy set off to ruin the same nations as before. Franconia was uninhabited now - a legacy of the Cipsac - and the going was slow there. They then entered Swabia with (??) free passage. Swabia was rewarded with a raid. The going was fast after that. Burgundy's capital was sacked. Burgundy itself was riaded. The great horde moved east through Swabia, Bavaria (raided), Austria, Bakony, Alfold (raided), Banat, Bosnia and Ludgorie (raided). Riverhome was sacked. The Cherkassy moved on to Wallachia, Moldavia and Özu. The usual Pechneg escort arrived at the Moldavian border and followed the Horde thereafter. In 1085, the Cherkassy were inactive.

THE MAGYARORSZAGH KINGDOM OF HUNGARY
Emeric, King of Hungary
DIPLOMACY: Swabia(f), Thuringia(f)
The great Cherkassy really had it in for the Magyars. Yet young Jasper gave the demon boys free passage - just to get them the hell out of Europe sooner. A fortress was built in the center of sacked Prague. Swabia, Bavaria and Alfold were raided. The King died from too much boning. Since Jasper never had a son (just girls), his brother, Emeric, became the king. Austria rebelled, splitting the kingdom into two.

THE HOLY KINGDOM OF BHEATHAAMROIS
Magna Mater Meardioch Rapturous, Sister of Mary, Protector of the Innocent, Blessed of the Divine Light of Christ, Beloved of God in All His Glory
DIPLOMACY: none
And so it came to pass that the false pope, named in his vulgar pride, 'Purity', was brought to the Holy Mother at the city of Cianodh. Here he was stirppled of his gaudy peacock vestment, and made to stand before the eyes of God and the savior Jesus clad in the loathsome, verminous hides of rats. A grave judgement was passed upon him for his heinous crimes against the children of God, that he perpetuated in his vainglory and avarice. And he was brought to a field, and great horses were hitched to his trembling, lowly limbs. At the command of Morrigan, the Raven of Meardioch, he was ripped assunder and died a miserable and well-deserved death. And while most of the foul bits of his personage were burned in a cleansing flame, his hideous head was set upon a staff of scorn and raised pointing in the direction of distant and heretical Rome, to serve as a condemnation and warning to the enemies of God and Christ. And the ravens and gore crows pecked out his eyes...
Morrigan soon passed away in 1082 at her convent. Evaine followed her path to heaven in 1083. An abbey was built in Agder. Lothian was passed on to Wessex.

THE SAXON KINGDOM OF WESSEX
Caedred II, Anglo-Saxon King
DIPLOMACY: Ponthieu(t)

THE ROMAN EMPIRE
Caesar Vigilius, Rex Latinorum, Dominum Lagobardium, Imperator Romanorum Occidentalis
DIPLOMACY: Calabria(ea)
The Romans kept watch on all their mountain passes entering Italy. There were some sighs of relief when news of Cherk's passing out of Europe (like a ten ton kidney stone) was related. Road work began between Pavia and Aquileia.

THE KINGDOM OF BURGUNDY
Heinric Clense, Rex Burgundus
DIPLOMACY: none
King Erich expected much support from the Papacy but none came. He could only raise 11,500 units which wasn't enough to stop the Cherkassy. They were destroyed in Burgundy by an overwhelming horde (say, 282,500 give or take 500 cavalry). Basel was sacked. The government suffered. The common people are beginning to believe in the Matriarchy of Cianodh. Erich died in the chaos. Another new dyansty, the Clense, took over. The Castillians conquered Lyonnais.

THE VISIGOTHIC KINGDOM OF CASTILLE
Isidore II, King of the Western Goths, Sovreign of Español
DIPLOMACY: none
