Industrial Stage Zero: The Medieval Era
Turn #36
1080 Anno Domini

Next Turn's Orders is Due: Monday, 28 October 1996

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Monday Due Dates: This turn and all future turns of this game will be due now on Monday. Also I will be in Phoenix more of the time.

New eMail: I have a new internet carrier. Please send all electronic messages to plate@inficad.com. Thanks.

Fax Machine: The Fax # at (602) 952-8075 was down on Thursday October 26th and October 27th until noon, because of some phone line repairs.

Undefined MSP (To Reiterate): You can convert 2m to 1t (and then demobizie it for NFP) if you FIRST pay 1 GP per MSP. These are privately owned ships and cannot be seized without consequence.

AGRO Harvests: I have adjusted the randomizer to fluctuate harvests about 33% either way. This should reduce the incidents of really bad harvests.

Capital Command Control Radius: This will radiate from your capital city your nation has an infrastructure of 2 or more. If your king is outside the CCR, the capital will be overthrown. Any Centralist Monarchy may choose to radiate CCR from the king if they so choose.

Chancellors (Clarification): All Imperial governments will have a Chancellor leader automatically rolled up and placed in the #2 slot of your stat sheet if the slot has not already been filled. If you don't like the chancellor that has been rolled up, you may replace the leader with one of your own choice (from your royal family, lieutenants or a re-roll). You may even choose not to have a chancellor at all. However, if an Imperial government is to raidate CCR from your capital, a chancellor must be present there during the turn, otherwise CCR will radiate from the ending location of your king. Chancellor effectively count against allowed princes, not BL leaders. Empires with chancellor s may have heirs activated in a princely slot. Chancellors act as regents in case the king is not of age.

THE RAJPUT KINGDOM OF GWALIOR
Ranga Bhoja III, Rajput Raja
DIPLOMACY: Tirhut(nt, lost), Jaunpur(nt, lost), Chitor(t)
After the attrition caused by a change of nationhood, Bhoja's new army consisted of 25 catapults and 25,000 cavalry. These immigrants accompanied him in his tour of the north bank of the Upper Ganges. Finally in late 1077, they arrived to Chitor. The Chitor waved bright banners and shouted with joy seeing the Rajputs arrive. They promised tribute. At the same time, the Punjab army (2000 cavalry, 850 catapults, 48,000 infantry) came out of the Malwa woods and invaded Vatsa. The fortress at Gwalior was assaulted and destroyed. The treasury room was captured. The government collapsed. Vatsa was occupied. The following year Bhoja and his forces crossed into Sursuti, forced tribute and reduced the walls of Agra by assault. Finally they elicted a reaction from the Punjab army who stomped on Vatsa when Punjab itself was invaded. The armies clashed and Bhoja was beaten. His army was ground down to nothing and Bhoja escaped to Chitor. Tirhut, Jaunpur and Kuru declared their neutrality, lacking faith in Vatsa's abiltity to fight.

THE HIDDEN KINGDOM OF PUNJAB
Jangikarna, Hidden King of Lahore
DIPLOMACY: Sursuti(t)
Expecting a war, The Punjab King called on teenagers to be armed. New troops were gathered and placed under the command of the new general Ranjaja. Ranjaja evacuated the garrison from Chitor making them pacified-tributary and then hid in the forests of Malwa. He awaited word of any attack against the Velhakeratic frontier. When word came that the Rajputs crossed into Chitor, he crossed into Vatsa to make mass mayhem. Gwalior was destroyed but Kanpur was all ready grown over ruins. Vatsa was left pacified as it was looted (sigh). By then, Ranga troops were threatening Lahore (Not a worry really, a force of 10,000 Turkic cavalry, 10,000 Persian infantry and 800 catapults from Bactria were present in Lahore, defending the capital only.). Their army was destroyed in Sursuti but that did not end the Rajputs. Bhoja II had escaped and they still had three regions.

DEADLY HORDE ATTACKS INTO PERSIA II
Samanid, Kökohul, Samoleh vs. Buyids
1076
The Kökohul Khan Kalar declared that he was no longer at war with the Buyids and agreed to help them out. This decision was puzzling because the Buyids did not give the Blue Horde any money to help them pay off their troop support. In the course of the year, 8000 troops deserted and the Kökohul 'un-horde' dropped to 31,500 ready riders. As part of the accord between Kalar and Nasr, the Buyid Emir, the Samanid Prince Sinjar was arrested. However, Sinjar escaped. His whereabouts were unknown after that.
In April, the 20,000 cavalry and 7500 sapper Buyid army and the Kökohul joined forces. They used the road to Borazjan to liberate Khuzestan from the evil Samoleh. There 29,000 Sarkh cavalry waited. As the attack began, the Kökohul turned on the Buyids. But Jurji, the Samoleh Emir, was assassinated. The battle was a rout for the Samoleh and Kökohul anyway. The Buyids lost their army and Emir Nasr died in battle. It looked grim for the Buydis.
1077-1080
Due to the death of Jurji, there were rebellions all over the place. The Samoleh had lost Khuzestan, Laristan and Yezd. Galdekat and the Sarkh army made ran home to make sure things were OK there. The Kökohul tagged along.
The Buyids were in a state of shock, but remained as always in one piece.

THE KÖKOKUL HORDE
Kalar
DIPLOMACY: possibly
The Blue Horde were down to 24,500 men as they arrived to Samoleh in 1077. Kalar involved himself in the court politics there. He even chose the regent for Galdekat's son and successor Murad.

THE SAMANID EMIRAT OF BUKHARA
Ahmad III, Emir of Bukhara
DIPLOMACY: none
Ahmed and Shazam left the country to defend a bunch of decadent infidels from other infidels. They took the entire army with them and entered India by way of Pamir, Kashmir and Himachal. The going would have been deadly without guides. In 1079, they returned home, no better.

ARRAN EMIRAT
Katl, Governor of the Roughlands
DIPLOMACY: Dasht Kavir(fa), Cim(hs)
The Arran exused themselves in the ugly war in the south to work on self improvement. The Dasht Kavir heeled up to Garif's alliance request. Baku grew to 3 Gpv. Sabim ventured into the nomadic steppe and almost got himself flayed out there dealing with rough sorts.

THE EMIRAT OF SAMOLAH
Murad, Emir es Samolah
DIPLOMACY: none
The Samoleh Emirat was down to Jibal and Kumis. The extra gold and money sent to them by the Samanids was saved. Galdekat died in 1080 and his infant son Murad became the new Emir.

DIPLOMACY: none
The Ghuzz departed Aleppo to graze in Palmyra.

THE KARIMID SULTANATE OF ALEPPO
Uthman ibn Sirdar, Sultan of Aleppo
DIPLOMACY: none
The Black Horde preoccupied the Karimids' attention as well they should. But the devils left without even burning a single farm on the way out. They left by way of Cilicia, Psidia, Phrygia, Paphlagonia to Pontus and the Caucausian steppes beyond. Lord Bisn went south with some ships and troops and protected Misr. He stopped the maurading Yemeni from stealing stuff. The Zaidi did succeed in bagging goodies in Sinai and Petra. Some gold delivered by the Caliph went on to Greece.

THE BLACK HORDE (Karakhanids)
Qarbu, Khan of Kara-Khan, Yabghu of the Western Horde
DIPLOMACY: Ilhand(neutral)
Qarbu evaded several assassination efforts and there were some attempts to cause dissention in both the main horde and the Ilhand allies. Qarbu wanted out; he got what he wanted anyway. The Black Horde left thorugh central Asia Minor and got into the Osland. There, the Levedian army of 17,000 cavalry, 10,000 infantry appeared and dogged the 110,000 cavalry hosts - but kept their distance until the Black Horde crossed the Volga. After that, the Karakhanids zig-zagged through the Ural regions ending up in Khirgiz. There, the Ilhand detached themselves (their chieftain had died) and occupied Siber, Irgiz and Khirgiz as their grazing grounds.

THE ZAMBEZI CONFEDERATION
Rilambo, King of Zimbabwe
Aiulse, Protector the Confederation
DIPLOMACY: none
Akrango became abusive with his pwoer but allowed Rilambo some semblance of authority by giving him a job in the government. Rilambo bided his time, gathered allies and eventually poisoned Akrango in 1080. After that, there were some bloody battles at the capital, but the Chieftains defeated the Akrangid tyrants. Rilambo had to make concessions in order to win.
In 1080, he made a speech to his subjects:
"Look at the blood that has been shed to seize control of this throne. Is it not a terrible waste? Has not the Zambezi Confederation been a peaceful land for nearly 200 years? To see that peace broken by ourselves against ourselves.... You should all be ashamed. Why was this done? Because you would not follow my father. Was he so poorly suited to lead? Surely the fighting was not over so small a thing as your own lust for power. I would expect that each and every one of you is willing to forego personal gain for
the benefit of all. I am.
"Today I announce to you a change. No more will the kings of Zambezi cloister themselves in hidden rooms and deliberate your fate with a select few advisors. No more will my word be law. From this day forward all of you will do your part to insure that we are governed wisely. I am ordering the wise men in the university to draw up plans for a great Hall of Debate to be built here in Zim. It will be a lasting reminder that differences are better resolved with words than bloodshed. Within that great Hall I will take my place. You will all return to your homes. There you will deliberate with your advisors and form your opinion on all those matters that are concerned with the fate of Zambezi. Then you will return and join me in the great Hall. There we will deliberate on these matters and together arrive at a
decision. Our word will be law.
"This marks the commencement of a new age of reason. We will resolve our differences with words. The might of our arms will not be turned against each other - only against those who would seek to destroy our way of life. Our forebears built a shining civilization from nothing. They did it with words of peace exchanged in friendship. I expect you and your children's children to be no less noble in maintaining and protecting their achievement."
Rilambo was gracious in his loss of effective power, but he insisted for the sake of peace that the Hall of Debate be built. He couldn't do it himself now for the power of taxation, even the power to levy manpower was now yielded by the Protector, elected the Assembly of Chieftains every five years. The Matubelan Aiulse replaced Akrango as Protector. Zed city was built in Chobe.

THE KRITIC EXARCHATE OF GREECE
Nicephorus, Exarch of Crete, Basileus of the Greeks
DIPLOMACY: Peloponesse(f)
Niko and his Peloponesse pals resolved to pick on the Nubians using their warships. In order not to rile up the priesthood, they dressed up in Arabian duds and flew Syrian colors on all their boats. No one was fooled because the Greeks forgot to ditch their traditional folk music instruments which they played while they threw 'Alexander Brand' plates at the Nubian cargo ships. All of Nubia's trade in the Mediterranean was shut off or interfered with. This only cut off Nubia's contacts with Greece (of course) and potential trade with Morocco.

THE CIPSAC HORDE FEDERATION
Suchow, Khan of Cipsac
DIPLOMACY: Wigai Horde(absorbed)
The Federeration blew the joint, but didn't want their hard earned slaves to go. So burdened, the hordes moved slowly across Hun territory then to Austria, Slovenia, Carpathia, Galich, Goryn and then to Levedian land. The Levedians had recently had their Black Horde headache but their troops kept an eye on the Cipsacs anyway. The 66,000 cavalry, 15,000 slaves and 1 tribe trudged themselves through the often trespassed Pechneg land. Finally in 1080, they reached the high (mostly uninhabited) prairie and rested in Urkel.

THE PECHNEG KHAGANATE OF LEVEDIA
Yikma, Khagan of Levedia
DIPLOMACY: Moldavia(f), Donets(f)
All the exercising across the country, keeping track of the Karakhanids in 1078 and the Cipsac in 1079 tired Ighao out. He died in 1080 of exhaustion. His son Yikma was able to sort things out. Taganov grew to 2 Gpv.

CARNIOLA
Even with the hammer of doom so close, the Magyars crushed the Carniolans so completly that their whole existence rated but a half a sentence in the Annals of Mankind.

Kristen and his lieutenant Bones traded places: Svealand and Agder. Kristen's wife died in 1080 as she gave birth to their last and fourth child.

THE MAGYARORSZAGH KINGDOM OF HUNGARY
Jasper IV, King of Hungary
DIPLOMACY: Swabia(a), Thuringia(fa)
King Jasper (III) hated rebellion, especially in times of need. He and his army of 46,500 cavalry forced tribute on Austria and regained Bakony, Alfold, Carpathia, Banat, Temevar and Podravina by parading through them. The Carniolan creep (Sebastian) and his 1000 horse abusers were trampled over. After all that jogging, Jasper went back to Prague (still a sacked city) and died. His son, wedded in Leipzig, became the fourth Jasper to warm the throne chair.

THE KINGDOM OF DENMARK
Ian Fourrod
DIPLOMACY: none
Ian made Holstein and Saxony protectorates in order to pick up the garrisons. Saxony tried to rebel but were chastized. Ian's army returned to Jutland and guarded. Trading with Wessex happened (socks for rocks).

THE HOLY KINGDOM OF BHEATHAAMROIS
Magna Mater Meardioch Rapturous, Sister of Mary, Protector of the Innocent, Blessed of the Divine Light of Christ, Beloved of God in All His Glory
DIPLOMACY: none
Morrigan the Fighting Black Nun came out of the convent to assist Yvigriane and the seige troops. They were gathered up with the English to bring doom to the corrupt and worldly Papacy at Lorraine. The ungodly swarm decided not to help the righteous and so the siege went ugly. The siege of Aachen resulted in a victory. The cathedral and library there were seized by sister Morrigan along with a glaring Purity III. His fate would be decided later. Cathedrals were also captured in Lorraine and Ile de France. It seemed that the best way to deal with the wickedness of the Church was to handle it within the faith and not rely on those who spit on the Cross.
Evaine blockaded Lorraine's fortress-port Wolfenstien along the Rhine. On the other bank she witnessed the turmoil of the heathens. Clerics were sent to Portsmouth to assist King Arric.

THE SAXON KINGDOM OF WESSEX
Caedred II, Anglo-Saxon King
DIPLOMACY: Connaught(f)
Walter returned to Portsmouth to get reinforcements (16,000 infantry) returned to Ponthieu to continue the campaign in the Continent. With the Connaught fighters (8000 infantry, 5000 cavalry) and the Scottish (100 siege engines), they marched to Lorraine (called Hainaut by the English) and laid siege to Aachen. Epop Purity was there with 14,500 off-key choir boys behind 20 foot ramparts. It would not be an easy siege - the Charks were absent (But that would be a huge, I mean it, blessing in disguise, just don't tell Walter that). Thank to that Raven Nun's ruthless battle tactics, the disadvantage the supply problems caused were overcome. The siege grounded down from the autumn of 1077, through all of 1078, and 1079. In August 1078, an arrow hit Purity in the cheek. He could no longer talk - making his commands fuddled. The Mother forces rallied with the news but the siege still wore everyone down. Another excruciating six months passed in 1079 with no surrender. Finally 1080 in June, the walls of Aix-la-Chapelle were finally demolished. After all the boiling tar, fire, disease, smoke, debris and exhaustion, the ordeal survivors (6000 infantry, 2000 cavalry and 15 siege engines) entered the holy city. Months later, Wolfenstien surrendered. Lorraine became another Saxon province.
Arric died satisfied in 1080. His son Caedred II was just capable enough to take over. The Mother sent monks to work the numbers. The government became Imperial as a consequence. A cardinal always stood by Caedred to advise the king on statecraft.

THE CHERKASSY HORDE (Xi Xia, Tavoc, Tangut, Jark,)
Layaidu, Khagan of the Steppe Peoples
DIPLOMACY: none
Khorchin was all set to assail Aachen when a vision beset him. A glowing, pure Virgin showed the Khagan the world if he did what he had planned. Aachen would be destroyed and its population would be led out in chains. That would only enflame emotions. Great Legions of war-frenzied Christians from Italy, Hungary and Burgundy would rise forth and confront the Cherkassy, defeat them and slay their tribes and herds. These victorious soldiers would then turn their vengeance on their enemies. Cities everywhere would fall was war esculated, women and children would be raped and slain, entire nation would be made extinct by war upon war upon war. Finally with all Europe consumed the hatred driven swarm of killers would rumble into the steppe itself and burn it and poison its charred soil, leaving nothing alive. It was more than the Khagan could take. 'Cry mercy upon these lands if you only stay your hand', the vision sang as she dimmed. Khorchin vacillated after that. He had lost his balls. His hesitation may have saved Europe but it spelled hard times for his mighty horde. Hesse had become a wilderness and troop support sky-rocketed. Khorchin fell ill and his underlings killed him in his convalesence. The Cherkassy and its new Khan may yet have to resort to drastic measures to save themselves if the nations of Europe don't pay their proper tribute. Perhaps the vision can become real.

THE GERMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH
Purity III, Bishop of Aachen, Holy Father of Christendom
Archbishop Nestor moved the treasury to Rome where an abbey was built. Purity III safeguarded Aix-la-Chapelle and prayed. A miracle kept the Cherkassy away but not the Wessex nor the Kyanutowners. These schismatics laid a bloody siege on the holy city that lasted three years. At the end of all this, Aix-la-Chapelle fell - Purity was imprisoned - and the Papal govdrnment suffered. Nester set up a temporary headquarters at Rome until things could be sorted out. Influence was lost everywhere.
