Industrial Stage Zero: The Medieval Era
Turn #30
1050 Anno Domini

Next Turn's Orders is Due: Friday, 31 May 1996

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Orders Deadline: Get those orders in by 6:00 pm MST or I will be physically unable to process your orders. This is how I can manage this latest three week turnaround. Those of you who transmitted orders to me last Friday and I was unable to get a hold you will be given free turns.

The Cultivation Process: When a city is built in a wilderness, the region will become cultivated in 100 years. If a city is built in a steppe, the region will become cultivated in 50 years. If a city in a steppe or wilderness is expanded, cultivation will occur sooner (by 1 turn, about 5 years).

Jungles Can Become Cultivated: If you build a Level-2 Megalith in a jungle region which has to be supported each turn, the region will become cultivated in 50 years. If the project support is not supported or if the region is looted, scorched earth or depopulated in any way, the region will revert to jungle, and the process will have to done from scratch all over again.

Blackmailing Converts: I give up. You can use intel SD to assist your DC actions, starting this next turn.

SAH Trade Route: You can trade across the Sahara without any of the conduits so long as you control an oasis route and the potential trade partner controls an oasis route on the other side. Such trade is considered SAH (Saharan) and will get 0.5 of your trade potential. Note that is you DO control the oases and make it to the other side, your trade route will be LTD (Land Terrain Dangerous) with a 0.6 trade potential. This solution was offered by Thomas Harlan on the Internet after a weird debate about camel shipping points.

Bombard Action (BM), Renaissance Only: For those of you with siege artillery, you can bombard those city walls from a safe distance. For each 6 months spent on bombard each siege artilliery unit can knock down some walls based on its artillery QR value and the siege QR value of the city walls being blasted. Use enough siege artillery and those walls truly will be dusted. This action can be done concurrent with a passive siege (PS). Bombarding will cause much collateral damage inside the city. You can Bombard an army performing a Passive Siege from inside a city but the damage won't be as great against them.
Movement cost: 6+
This rule was suggested by Jonathan White. Bombard will eventually have expanded uses in the Industrial Era.

THE MINOMOTO SHOGUNATE
Tenno Shilohata, Emperor of Jihpen
Minomoto no Chingata, Shogun
DIPLOMACY: Hokkaido(nt)
The navy landed forces on Taiwan and conquered the island and put an uprising because the natives weren't happy to see Shinto settlers living in their land. The Malaysian fortress Sihong Tak was reduced.

THE MAGADANNAM
Muakhuat, Overlord of Hai Ochostk, Protector of the Iceman, Harvester of Cute, Furry Animals
DIPLOMACY: none
The refugees got used to the long winters, but they didn't like it. The Annamese learned that chewing pine needles can make them warm.

THE UIGUR KHANATE OF AMUR
The 7000 Amur defenders were crushed by Muasing and his 28,000 singing Parhae troops. The Zorastrainist lands didn't seem to mind of the change of leaders because Parhae had adopted their religion.

THE TUNGUS KINGDOM OF PO-HAI
Mau Sing, King of Parhae
DIPLOMACY: none
Muasing found no fault in his car insurance so he did not switch. Zarathrustianism seemed cool so he converted to the faith in 1146. To seal the pact he made with the fire priests, the golden, jewel encrusted 'Ax of Rulership' was forged and was said to be blessed by Omazda himself. The regions of Anshan, Khungari, Mantap, Mudan, Parhae, Sikhote, Suifenhe and Wusuli reverted back to ZO, but with significant Chan Buddhist (MB) minorities. There was still a trace of those weirdoes who worship the Dog God (O Rover, Woof Woof!)
The King marched his army around the north and took over Zvoron and pacified Amur. The Amur portion of the old Uigur government was transferred to Natanz. The lack of reserve food worsened a famine that struck in the late 1040's.

THE HOU LIANG ZHONGDI
Lei Qui, Yen Di, Emperor of the Middle Kingdom
DIPLOMACY: none
Shie Di died in 1047. The Empire mourned for three years.

THE DA TANG EMPIRE
Zhoi "Chang Wang", 28th Tang Ruler, Emperor of the Middle Kingdom
DIPLOMACY: Jehol(c), Qinghai(nt), Ordos(nt)
The Emperor wanted more heads to bonk so he sent his envoys to increasingly less comfortable lands. One Spoke (as he was called because he only had one spoke) found Qinghai to be thoroughly Mahayana Buddhist. Whatever Chang Wang was doing, it's working.

THE SERENE PALACE OF THE GREATER WHEEL
Cho, Bodhisattva of Chan Mahayana
Yan Setui, Grand Abbot of Holy Chiangling
DIPLOMACY: none
Societal and Economic reforms began to be carried out while the Grand Abbot opened abbeys in Chinghu, Yongan, Chengdu, Pei Huang, Anding and Shansi. The new host for Buddha's spirit was found in Wuling.

THE KAMBUJADESA OF LOWAN
Jayavarman VI, Emperor of Khmer
DIPLOMACY: none
Angkor was rebuilt. King Jayavarman is ripe.

THE COMMERCIAL ENTERPRISE OF SRIVIJAYA
Sri Suryanarayana II, CEO of Srivijaya, Inc.
DIPLOMACY: none
Suryanarayana wasn't satisfied. He wanted the Yampi to utterly humiliated and broken. Routa was tapped to hire the mercenaries in Kupang and sail the main army from Timor to Yampi once more. At the target land, there was nothing to resist the 500 cavalry, 4500 infantry, 3500 sappers and 5000 mercenaries as they occupied the homeland. The mercenaries stepped aside while the remainder of the forces fought the citizen in order to force Buddhism upon the inhabitants. 10,000 folks rose in rebellion against that idea and massacred all the infantry and forced the rest to retreat to the boats. The Srivijayans abandoned Yampi. Since Timor had no garrison, it reverted back to Yampi's control. Ratua and his survivors on board the 50 ships withdrew to Kediri.

DIPLOMACY: none
Apathy and fatalism permeated the Yampi realm - again. The Srivijayans even occupied the homeland and were about to seal the Band's doom when they got too greedy and tried to force feed their religion to them. The Srivijayans could not accomplish that evil task and escaped. Now Timor and Yampi are free. Distance led to Molucca's mutiny.

THE KINGDOM OF BURMA
Akalsei, King of Burma
DIPLOMACY: Maghada(nt, until nullified by Vatsa)
Aksalsai and his 34,000 men went to Maghada to gain their submission. The Vatsans were there too and frustrated the Burmese greatly. That Cholan army which accompanied ol' Ranga Adhira got trigger happy. This force of 10,000 Vatsan cavalry, 12,500 southern knights, 12,500 men at arms and 12,500 low life scum attacked Akalsei's force. Akalsei defended from a makeshift circle against the greater army and wrought much damage as they could. In the end, Akalsei had to give up Maghada and left with 1500 infantry and a captured Chola general. The Hindus had some 28,000 fighting fellows left which did not attack Nadavaria.

THE CHOLA MANDALAM
His Magnificence, Chola Rajadhira, Maharaja of Bharat
DIPLOMACY: Pawar(f)
The Maharaja was unhappy when he heard of the attack in Maghada. He had ordered his soldiers to escort the Vatsa king and protect him. Nevertheless, a loan was sent off to his brother Ranga Adhira even though they are troublemakers.

THE RAJPUT KINGDOM OF GWALIOR
Ranga Adhira, Rajput Raja
DIPLOMACY: Kingdom of Bihar(t), Tirhut(nt)
Five years of cowering in Dahala was not going to get the old Rajput Empire back. Adhira and his court left this refuge and returned to the Kanpur palace to raise a new army. They were joined by Chola General Ahjasama to train and perform military exercises (decapitating straw dummies, tiger chases and simulated thumb-wars). Two pieces of the old empire were picked up: Tirhut and the Kingdom of Bihar. The strategic land of Maghada had 34,000 Burmese vagrants who beguiled the Maghadans. It took a little brawl to show these squatters out. Maghada agreed to be neutral afterwards. 11,000 Kashmir war-men trespassed Kuru, stole some women and returned to Sursuti.

THE HIDDEN KINGDOM OF KASHMIR
Pamtak II, Hidden King of Khiragu
DIPLOMACY: no way
Kashmir armies guarded themselves. One group fo fighters led by Prince Kukarsa made an advance into Kuru but found the locals too boring to rebel against the tyranny of the Rajputs. Agra in Sursuti was rebuilt.

THE GHUZZ TURKS
Koshul, Khan of the Ghuzz
DIPLOMACY: none
Koshul's 27,000 nomads left Dulaym (which rebelled) and headed down into the south Gulf Coast to raid Qatar. Qatar was already Sunni and wouldn't not accept any threats by co-religionists. Frustrated, the Ghuzz raided them. Koshul's foppy son, Sarb, married the Ma'mum Caliph's niece Kafijeh.

THE BLACK HORDE (Karakhanids)
Kasab, Khatun of Kara-Khan, Yabghu of the Western Horde
DIPLOMACY: Os People(a)
The Black Turks, all 91,000 of them, left Arran's land and took the first train back to the steppe. In Terek, the Os Tribes, famous for their goat custard sauce, linked up with Kasab's army. Much of the steppe was depoplated because of recent nomadic migarations. A small horde does live in Ili called the Ilhand.

THE YELLOW HORDE OF ILI (Sarkhagi
Kheres
DIPLOMACY: none
There were some rumors flying in the horde that Kheres was a geek. Kheres ruthlessly crushed these words under his leather boots. The Khan also evaded two Arab killers. In 1047, 44,500 Buyid cavalry attacked the Kumis camp. The 69,500 Sarkhagi pummeled these Persians for their foolishness. Kuhistan was attacked by cowardly Samanids and colonized. Afghanistan, Seistan, Zabulistan gave up and became independent.

THE BLUE HORDE: Kökohul
Jawziki
DIPLOMACY: Taba Tribe(a)
The Great Kökohuls pretty much terrorized fellow nomads in Aralsk, Argu and Kuldja. Since the act of looting required an attack before many were called off. The Kökohul and Taba allies ended up in Uigur just in time to get covered in snow.

THE SAMANID EMIRAT OF BUKHARA
Ibrahim, Emir of Bukhara
DIPLOMACY: Pamir(ea), Khuttal(c, lost), Ushrusana(ea, now independent)
Prince Ibrahim and 5000 cavalry and 10,000 infantry crossed the mountains to attack pro-Yellow Kuhistan. The Kuhistan had to be put down twice. The second time was the uprising that started when colonists arrived to convert the region to friendly. In 1050, Mahmud died. Ushrusana and Uzbek rebelled. Claims to Arlen and Khuttal were lost. Trade with the Caspian nations was blocked.

ARRAN EMIRAT
Ab'ul Sharif
DIPLOMACY: Shirvan(a), El Burz(fa)
Hakim and the main force marched to next-door Georgia and put down the disgrunted Christians while Shi'a Muslims moved in. The Pontus didn't like what happened and revolted. Trade was cut with the Karimids even as trade with Baghdad was started. The Caliph agreed to stop fighting. Arran has become cultivated. May flowers brings June bugs.

BUYID EMIRAT OF SHIRAZ
Sa'id bin Mohammad al Buya
DIPLOMACY: none
Sa'id's best general, Rahman Udalam with 10,000 mercenary cavalry and 34,500 regular cavalry took on 69,500 Sarkhagi nomads. It was suicide but Sa'id had a secret plan which he would not tell anyone. The battle went badly for the Buyids and Rahman's task force took out 15,500 cavalry at the cost of 31,000 fine Buyid knights. Rahman saw the value of fear and ran away with his survivors to Zagros. Sa'ids own efforts converted the Khuzestan to Shi'ism.

THE ABBASID CALIPHAT (Dar al Islam)
Al Mutawakkil II, Kalifat Rasul Allah, Commander of the Faithful
DIPLOMACY: Dulaym(n)
There was hope that the Syrians would send enough money to their Caliph so that Al Mustad could be rebuilt. But that was not in the cards. The Caliph and Jaffar, the eldest Radalid, both died of river illness in 1050. Ma'mum's brother Yusuf seized his opportunity and become Al Mutawakkil the Second. The Radalids wanted to place Amal on the throne but didn't have enough politcal savvy to get their way.

THE KARIMID SULTANATE OF ALEPPO
Sirdar, Sultan of Aleppo
DIPLOMACY: none
Palmyra was blessed with the city called Dayr az Zaur. No diplomat showed up to brag about Sirdar's benevolence. Affan (the Duk) rustled up 21,000 men on horseback and attacked Sinai. Tensions between Sunni and Shi'a mounted when Affan's men imposed the Shi'a way on the Sunni population there. Now there can be inter-city trade from Kalisma. Misr need not have to be on the verge of unrest all the time.

THE ZAIDI EMIRAT of DANAKIL

THE CHERKASSY HORDE (Xi Xia, Tavoc, Tangut, Jarken, Jerques, Charks)
Jehum, Khagan of the Steppe Peoples
DIPLOMACY: none
The Cherkassy drove wild into the heart of Europe. The Magyars let them pass knowing perhaps that defiance would lead to terrible consequences. There was no trouble going through Thuringian (soon to be Maygar) land either. In 1048, the 204,500 light cavalry descended upon Lyon from Switzerland and looted the region. The city of Lyon itself was unwalled so it was sacked. Much loot was obtained from the place, it used to be the Burgundian capital. In Burgundy a pre-emptory army of only 25,000 stood up to them. They were swept aside. This region too was looted and the metropolis of Basel was plundered. In 1049-50, neutral Champagne was deafeated and looted as was Papal Hesse (Jehum spaced Lorraine). The 202,000 horsemen of doom encamped in Bavaria by the end of the year. The riches in Europe weren't as fabulous as India and the weather was bad.

THE MAGYARORSZAGH KINGDOM OF HUNGARY
Gaspar II, King of Hungary
DIPLOMACY: Dobruja(hs)
The Magyars remembered the tough time they had as a horde and were sympathetic to the Cherkassy plight. So the poor souls were allowed free passage. The compassion did little to reduce the sheer fear, but an opportunity opened up. 28,000 cavalry and 10,000 bad quality infantry fell in behind King Gaspar and marched against their old enemy the Teutons. The force first dealt with the awesome fury of Wermer of Austria (the first 'BBB' leader, I've ever rolled). The sly SOB had 2000 men and killed their number in Hungarian slobantry. But the wonder-man was overwhelmed by the Magyar cavalry and had to flee to Bohemia where the Austrian graf served as an advisor to King Johanes. The remainder of the 1047 campaign was used to break Moravia to force them into vassalage.
In the spring of 1048, Gaspar and his forces attacked the 15,000 Teutonic knights to liberate Bohemia. All the krauts were slain in a furious battle. Gaspar's aide Hamel and Wermer died in the charge. Johanes ran away ultimately to Westphalia. For the remainder of 1048 and the 1049 season, Magyar forces easily occupied Bavaria, Nordgau and Franconia. Thanks to this conquest the mighty Cherkassy (heathen devils) horde got to Bavaria. Young Gaspar got in trouble in Dobruja and escaped retaliation.

DIPLOMACY: none
The Swedes became the Madery's most vociferous supporter. The Teutons apparently sent peace offerings but what ever deals were made weren't following up. Truan rode his cavalcade from tho' north to Thuringia. Sadly being in Thuringia was not good for the northlands. Trolle Isaksen proclaimed himself King of Sweden in Stockholm and took over all the native Scandanavian lands. Truan and his loyal lieutenant Birki held on to Jutland, Saxony, Zealand, Orkney and pacified Thuringia and Holstein. Much of the Infrastucture except that lent by Cianodh and the local marquis joined the Svierge rebellion. Truan set up his new capital in Alborg. His nation was now seafaring. Obodria, Trondelag and Hergelad have become independent.

Edward, the 'Duke of the Pale' saile doff into the cold waters north of the Minch. He lost both his transports to icebergs near the Faeroes. He died coming back to Iceland.
