Turn #87 Industrial Stage One
1505-1508 Anno Domini Renaissance Era
Gamemaster: Thad Plate
Next Turn's Orders are due Monday, August  31st, 1998

ANNOUNCEMENTS

I'M BACK:  Yeah, I'm back.  I took the game over from Scott last April and have been updating the rules, cleaning out the system, since then.  It took awhile but for the first time in eight months, a turn of Lords 10 has become available.  This is the first turn I've done for this campaign in a year.   I plan to get turns out every 6-8 weeks until better automation is developed.

JIHAD!:  Some of you (Sunni Muslim nations) have Jihad forces ('r' units).  Their purpose is to attack, conquer and destroy Christandom, specifically the Roman Catholics.  If they are not used in that manner this turn, they will rebel from your control and move to join a Jihadist state.

RULES CHANGES:  There are many myriads of rules changes that have been implemented with the coming out of the Revised (5.5) Rulebook.  Too many to list.  You may read them  in the new Rulebook and the new Plate Games Supplement available on the Web.  You may scan these  rule changes  as I introduced them in past turns of Lords 11 and Lords 12.  There are two major rule changes that are being introduced here in Lords 10 first.  I have modified Mercantile Combines and have introduced roving Mercenary Bands.  Also, a rule about City Imperial Size will be implemented in a few turns.

MERCANTILE COMBINES: Having considered the runaway problem of  Mercantile Combines, I have introduced new rules governing these entities to bring them back to Earth.  1)  Home Nation Rule: Most Mercantile Combines are given a Charter from one nation and one nation alone, their Home Nation, the nation from which they originated.  This rule has profound effects on the Mercantile Combine.  The Home Nation is entitled to roughly 20% of the Mercom's income as taxes.  Without it or an agreed to arrangement, the Charter is revoked.  Without a Charter, the Mercantile Combine's operations are hamstrung and will suffer rebellions from all offices in areas not speaking the Mercome language, not adhering to the Mercom's religion.  This rule is in effect now.  2) Mercom Location Leech Rule: All Mercom Locations produce more income for the host city or region in total.  However, half of money the Mercom exacts from an office is lost to the Host Nation.  Example: The Hanseatic League placed a branch office in Copenhagen, the Hansa will get 50% of the city taxes, but the Danes will lose 25%.  The economy has been improved by 25% for a total of 125% collected in taxes.  This rule will be in effect Turn 90.   These rules plus others are detailed in the Plate Games Supplement.

MERCENARIES: All Geographic Regions will have 10mi in their Merc Pool.  Additional Mercenaries are available as Merc Bands which will be listed in the body of this newsfax.  The full rules governing Merc Bands are found in the Plate Games Supplement.

CEDING TERRITORY:   These are the rules concerning the transfering of regions from one nation to another.   You may transfer the alliegance of P, PT, C, NT & T without penalty.  FA regions become NT.  EA become T.  A regions must pass a leader revolt check and then become EA.  F regions must two revolt checks and then will be pacified (you must get a garrison there on the turn of transfer).  If the controlling nation is of a  different religion than the transferred region, an additional revolt check must be made.
These rules were spelled out by Thomas Harlan last month.

CITY IMPERIAL SIZE:   Every controlled city also counts against your Imperial Size.  I will be using two formulae to determine this: It's either every 3 cities times your Size Divisor counts as 1 Imperial Size (if friendly, pacified or full allied, see below for the
variation) -or- every 10 city GPv times your Size Divisor counts as 1 Imperial Size, whatever is lower.  (Special Announcement)  Cities
counting against your imperial size will be enforced as of Turn 55 of Lords 11, Turn 15 of Lords 12 and Turn 90 of Lords 10.  You all will be given time to boost your Infrastructure or shore off unneeded regions to prevent Thin Government.

COLOR CODED NATION HEADERS: The Colors coded on each nation represents your technology level.  GREY is Tech 1 & 2,  BLUE is Tech 3, RED is Tech 4, GOLD is Tech 5, GREEN is Tech 6, AQUAMARINE is Tech 7, PURPLE is Tech 8, BROWN is Tech 9 and OLIVE is Tech 10.

LORDS 10 UNIT CONVERSION
Each point of cavalry and infantry (light or heavy) represents 500 fighting men. A transport or warship point = 1 vessel with 500 men aboard. A siege point = 5 siege towers or catapults or 500 sappers. A war elephant point = 50 elephants ridden by mahouts. A field fort point = 1 tower manned by 500 men each. THE GREAT ZIMBABWE
Malachai, Chief of Zimbabwe, Holder of the Five Twin Jackal Chair
DIPLOMACY:
Folks were getting unruly in this Empire too.  The lack of domestic policy may hurt the Zimbabwe if nothing is done.  Malachai wondered if he should send troops to punish the Christians for their dastardly deeds in Israel.

East Africa

THE KRAKAS KINGDOM OF AETHIOPIA
Gobbu VI, Alem 'Elum, King of Aethiopia
DIPLOMACY:
The Aethiopians expanded their cannon corps and their navy at both key ports.  New buildings had to be seized by the government to hoard all that godl in the treasury.  Gobbu VI was horrified at the events in Palestine and claimed that his subjects would never do something like that.  His military forces girded for war anyway.

North Africa

THE SULTANATE OF IEST
Khalid ibn Abu, Sultan of Mahidia
DIPLOMACY: Yemen(f), Carib(ea)
Muhammad was joined by Abu and Isfahan and some clerics.  They succeeded in writing an alliance with the Carib Indians and converted them to Sunni Islam.  A foothodl for the Africans was finally established in Al Jedadinyi (The New World).  At home, the destruction of Jerusalem's holy mosque was condemned by every ulama of the kingdom.  Some 150,000 holy warriors gathered in Iest's parks to destroy the Catholic scourge.  Perhaps to keep Iest on its good side, Italy sent 400 chests of gold to the Sultan.
Ahmad's long life and reign ended in 1508.  He had been 94.  His grandsom Khalid became the next sultan.
MAP CHANGES: Tunis & Benghazi each grew to become 8 GPv.  Yemen is cultivated.  The Mubashshirin missionaries succeeded in converting Dogamba and Carib to Sunni Muslim (SN).

THE ALMORAVID EMIRATE OF ANDALUSIA
Kadir, Emir as Sevilla
DIPLOMACY:
Al Humbil grew superstitious of the Carib Indians and lfet the island without a word, abandoning any claims left there.  He arrived three months later at Maya where he requested on seeing the Malik al Okaka.  But Al Humbil got sick and died while waiting.  As that was happening, three captains charted the North Muhit (Atlantic) and the Bahr al Karib without running into any super-tempests.
An exerpt from the Journal of Kadir, the new Emir of Seville:
"Several months ago a member of our court returned from a visit to the Dihaj Khanate.  He had been working on trade matters between our two nations.  Upon his return he came before me and any court and presented his observations on the state of our eastern neighbor.  As part of the report he stated that slavery was still an essentual part of the Dihaj economy.  He also stated that the condition of the the slaves that he saw did not come to close to matching the condition of the slaves of many of the other nations that my nation deals with.
"I thought nothing of this until later that night when my daughter, who was very much into the teachings of the Koran, approached me.  She had heard the talk of the court and had grown concerned that the slavery practiced in the Dihaj Khanate violted the teachings of Allah.
"In our nation slavery had been outlawed for over 100 years.  And we as a people believe that no follower of Allah should own another follower of Allah.  But we are also a practical people, because of our trading we are careful not to preach to trading partners.  And not to interfere in their internal affairs.
"But my daughter is young and very idealistic, and I have a hard time telling her no to anything.  The results were that I carried on my talks with the Khan of the Dihaj and we worked out a deal by which he will turn his nation away from slavery in return for economic assistance from Andalusia.
"Needless to say my daughter is quite happy about the agreement."

THE NORMAN KINGDOM OF SAXONIA
Henry IV, King of the Saxons and of the Normans, Count of Blois

MAP CHANGES: Cherbourg & La Rochelle each grew to 9 GPv.

THE ARLES KINGDOM OF ITALIA
Rolfo II, Rex Lagobardum
DIPLOMACY: Corsica(f)
The efforts of the Italian crown was to ensure Italy and  her allies would be safe from the opportunisitic tiger-sharks who prey upon the righteous.  Don Guarnual continue on his mission in the New World.  With 10 elite galleons, 34 line galleons, 30 caravels with 2500 marines, 30,000 mercenaries and 50 condottieri cannons, the worthy made his way from recently reconquered Ciboney into the Caribbean Sea.  In 1505, he landed his forces in Guayami and confirmed the report that it was a narrow isthmus to the Pacifico Ocean.  The natives there were pacified and on its Pacific side the city of Porto Leon was built.  To keep the region safe, fortifications were constructed there.  Guarnual had hoped that Porto Leon would be able to trade pox goods to the legendary Inca but the outpost needed a port facility on the Atlantic side or a canal dug up to be activated.  Guarnual was not in the mood to sent missives to a demanding king, he would continue on with his mission.  In 1506, Guarnual would now complete the job he has started before and he will beat the nasty Korndanes again.  So in the early spring of 1508 in the Ohio River, the 44 warships pounded fury on the 40 surprised galeasses.  13 were captured.  9 sank.  The Italians lost 8 of their ships.  The 18 surviving Danish ships rowed upriver and his themselves in the Cherokee forest.  The Italian navy had made its point.  The bealleagered and grateful Adenans were able to trade freely with the Italian colonies.
In 1507, King Rolpho died.  Just before Rolfo II's ascension, Pope Sixtus VI announced that the Papacy would no longer be subserviant to the Italian Kingdom.  The main ministers of the Kingdom, the Cardinials, all back Sixtus VI and joined the pontiff.  Because of the split, Peto Zanbuila tried to rub out Rolfo II.  Peto was an idiot and didn't last long in Rome.  The new king maintained control of his kingdom, including the colonies under Governor-General Guarnual at Arawak.
MAP CHANGES: Calabria was colonized to become (2/3)RC.  Spoloto has been settled to (2/4)RC.  Arawak gained a city, Citmo, which harbors the Cayman Sea.  Porto Leon is Guayami's new port city  to the Sea of Panama.

THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH
Sixtus VI, Bishop of Rome, Vicar of Christ, Servant of the Servants of God, Supreme Pontiff on the Universal Church
CONSECRATION: Bavaria(ab), Lerida(ab), Murke(ab), Champagne(ab)
Just days after Pope Sixtus broke with the Italian Kingdom, he had Paul II beautified and set up a tribunal to investigate the sanctity of Innocent III.  He announced that his predecessor Sixtus IV was wrong to bend the Rock of St. Peter o the whimsy of some Caesar.  That the execution of Paul II was evil.  He pointed out that the destruction of Jerusalem was evidence of God's Judgement.  He knew Catholics weren't to blame but war with the Saracen, Blackmoor and Jew was unavoidable anyway.  The Pope was not alone in these stated beliefs.  The clergy rank and file from parish deacon to arch-cardinal had long suffered from their Babylonian Captivity.  Somehow with the will of Christ, things will be set right.  There will be no running away;  The Church will stand for what is right.

THE MERCANTILE AND BANKING SYNDICATE OF LIVORNO (Medici)
Natani d'Medici
CAPITALIZATION: Genoa(ct), Wyst(ct), Latium(mf), Marseilles(ct), Tuscany(mf)
With lots of investment and time, the otherwise inflexible Medici managed to elevate Genoa, Wyst and Marseilles to exclusive cartel cities.  Efforts to open offices in Germany, Greece and England didn't work too well.  The star of the Syndicate was Don Pulci Alefilip who with a limited budget set up rural agents in Tuscany and Latium.

THE UNITED CANTONS OF HELVETICA
Wilhelm  Kemmelstim, Grand Doge of the UCH
DIPLOMACY: Banat(nt), Croatia(ea, maxed), Podraviana(aw)
The Helveticans were interested in peaceful takeover and urban development.  The Ritterrat with no power had no reason to convene so they didn't.  This suited the Kimmelstims just fine.  However their power could easily crumble without the institution that could back them up.  Orgul the Navigator obtained the maps from the Faroes to Iceland at a bar in Reykyavik.  He then sailed to Gronland, and from there, Vinland.  He lost some ships heading back from ice drifts.  Back in Reykyavik, he shared his maps with Helic de la Fleche, Saxonia's explorer.
Disaster struck the ruling family when Wilhelm's brother Mikel visited Podravina.  He angered the resident Slavonians to the point of war and was killed by an angry mob.  Banat, on the other hand, defected to the Helveticans (from the Romans) after being persuaded to do so by Alfoldian nomads.
MAP CHANGES: Dalmatia became Roman Catholic.  City growth- Colmar(4 GPv), Lelander(8), Frankfurt(3), Neuhamelin(5), Far Yell(2) and Sancelade(5).

Merc Bands: The Epriotes. L747 (Piras) 18i (QR: i12) in Epirus.  10 GP min.

THE GRAND DUCHY OF KRAKOW
Roman Staszavic, Blackjack Duke of Krakow, the King of Polka
DIPLOMACY: Özu(f), Turov(ne), Slovakia(ne), Bialoweza(fa),  Galich(f)
The Poles (actually Little Poles who have ruled Poland for about 60 years now) worked to solidify their corridor to the Black Sea.  Galicia was absorbed and a city was built for them.  South Podolia (Ozu) became part and parcel of the Grand Duchy by marriage.  Borslav of Krasnik became an important markgraf of the realm.
MAP CHANGES: L'viv was built along the road in Galich.  The postal road between Cracow and L'viv became Ducal.  Danzig and Wiczin grew each to 8 GPv.  Volhyna became cultivated.

THE KINGDOM OF THE BALTS
Gleb, King of Baltica, Prince of Novgorod
DIPLOMACY:
There was a vacuum of leadership as Gleb became senile.  Give the old man a break.  He was 96.

KINGDOM OF BOLGARSK (Ukrain Empire)
Pavel, Prince of Kubishev
DIPLOMACY: Kursk(hs), Levedia(t to Romans)
Prynzil's final journey was to land a path to the Black Sea.  He couldn't sway the Kursk heathens.  To his horror, he found that Levedia had already signed an alliance with the Byzantine Empire.  He appealed to 'historic' connection between his nation and that of Scythia.  The Levedians were somewhat stirred and dropped to tributary.  Prynzil then died of some mosquito disease.  Prynzil's younger brother, Pavel, was swift in asserting his authority.  The slave economy of old was transformed into a guild system.

THE DIHAJ KHANAT
Saykhin, Mighty Servant of Allah
DIPLOMACY:
A huge influx of cash from Al Andalus led to great improvements in every Dihaj city.  The Andalusians have told the Dihjan that no Muslim should own another human being.  So reforms began to free all slaves and make them free.  The events in the Levant did even reverberate in the mosques of the Khanat.  Some 39,000 holy fighters came out to smite the evil Franks.

THE ROMAN EMPIRE -Phormion Dynasty
Ilias Phormio, Imperator Romanus, Basileus of Constantinople
DIPLOMACY: Pereaslavl(fa), Banat(ne), Alfold(n)
Erasamus called for help in Banat because they were a tough egg.  Castor came by and did what he could.  The problem in Banat was interferance by the Helvetican Despotate.  Their envoy, a certain Keinerhof, had spent much time in the area making freinds.  Meanwhile Alfold kidnapped Pyrrus and in their prison pits, the diplomat died.  Alfold then complicated the picture in Banat by launching a raid against them.  The Banat immediately repudiated their relations with the Romans and joined Helvetica.  The 8000 Alfoldians nomads then rode south to Bosnia which was plundered of many of its public works without opposition.  Only the existance of the Belgrad fortress kept Bosnia from outright rebellion.  The Byzantine Emperor condemned the actions of the Muslim Caliphat against the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem.
MAP CHANGES: Bosnia to (2/4)EO.  Belgrad is a 2 GPv city.  City growth: Cherson(5 GPv), Adrianople(8), Ephesus(8), Chalcedon(7), Ariana(7), Bucharest(7).  A royal road connects Comnena in Moldavia to Wallachia's Bucharest.

ASIA

The Middle East

THE DAR AL ISLAM - Arbiliq Caliphat
Al Omarrab, Kalifat Rasul Allah, Commander of the Faithful
DIPLOMACY: Dulaym(t), Arran(t)
An outrage occurred in the Umma so ghastly that only the mind of satan can conceive of it.  It started in 1505, when Roman Catholics from the Frankish quarter of Jerusalem uprose.  They took up swords and guns and began to terrorize the populace.  Their beef was that Jerusalam had been defiled by Muslims and it was time to 'take back Christ's city'.  Suddenly one of their number slew the head Muslim cleric of the Dome of the Rock.  The peaceful Muslims were stirred into action and tried to stop these murderers.  But the Catholics grew in strength joined by every lowgrade, rotten scum in Palestine (and beyond).  In what will be called , 'Night of the Blaze', they stormed the Dome of the Rock, destroyed everything inside, sprinkled gunpowder on the tiled floor and blew the place up.  The devastation was so complete that a gaping crater surrounded by charred rubble was all that was left of the Holy Mosque, the site where Muhammad's spirit ascended to Paradise.   The Jews when they got wind of this, surrounded the Wailing Wal in vigil and protected their Temple legacy from the onslaught of the Catholic trash.  But the mob that so maliciously destroyed  the Holy Mosque filtered away and escaped the wrath of an angry city.  The Orthodox Christians denided responsibility.  They along with the few Italian merchants were all run out of town.  The Church of the Holy Sepulchre was invaded, every item was destroyed.  It became a mosque thereafter.  As was the fate of every chruch in Jerusalem.
The events that happend in April 1505 spread throughout the Muslim Umma like wildfire and grew in its telling.  'Jerusalem has been destroyed', the runners would say, 'we must avenge this!'  And so from every hamlet, every camp and every city, a multitude of fighters came out, armed with sticks, knives, horn and arquebus ready to smite the hated, evil Franks who perpetuated this crime against Allah himself.  Near Baghdad alone more than a million men gathered to awit the Caliph's call to arms.  Half came from the unemployed masses of the Caliph's city.
Al Omarrab desparied the influence of his daughter's husband Lahidda and he paid him off with a Caliph's ransom, if he just leave the palace.  As per the agreement, Lahidda left his eldest son Hasan to be adopted as Al Omarrab's heir.  True, it would end the Arbiliq Dyansty but then the first five Caliphs were their own dynasties.
MAP CHANGES: Abadan, Aleppo, Hormuz, Khuzestan, Kuwait, Lebanon & Mand are all Sunni Muslim (SN).  City growth- Batum(2 GPv), Akrakis(6), Nicosea(9), Attalia(9), Hawalli(9).  The port city of Omarra was built on the Maldives.  Paphlagonia became a (2/4) SN region.  Charsionon, (2/5)SN.

DIPLOMACY: Tabaristan(f), Khurasan(a), Karatou(f), Daylam(ne)

IL SINDACATO GRANDE ORIENTALE COMMÉRCIO (Republic of Portale D'Oro)
Don Santino Carpachi, Il Doge della Portale D'Oro
CAPITALIZATION:  Rusichatta(mf), Chekiang(mf), Chantibun(mf)
The Syndicate's influence over the Indonesians became more pronounced.  In time, Italian culture would win out enriching the Portali Colonial merchants and those at home.  Huge advances of cash could help to establish agencies, warhouses and outposts in areas inheritantly hostile to non-native commerce.  Most of the trade representatives were frustrated by the lack of co-operation when they chose to spend little money.  The two semi-silvertounged leaders, Antonio Geraldi and Nicolo Bertolli, got lucky were were able to open shops in Rusichatta at Vanga and Chantibun of  Siam.
The Civil War in Indo-China presented a great opportunity to the Syndicate.  Politcal operators seized control of the city of the Golden Portals and by extension the region of Kwa.  Don Santino declared the Republic of Portale D'Oro to be a real entity with real power.

THE DAI VIET EXILE KINGDOM OF MONPHU
Phan Jainan, Wang Dai Viet
DIPLOMACY:
Phan Monphu's death in 1508 was a traumatic affair of Dai Viet.  At the height of power, petty jealousies flared in the palace.  Because Prince Jainan was seen by many as a weakling and a ditherer, the North Court Duke, Vhoi Tien, with Du Vinh of the Palace Seal seized power in the capital.  Their coup was not clean.  Jainan had support in the guise of Guan Xunxi, the war hero.  After a week of intrueges, assassination plots and sabotage, it was clear that neither side would have an advantage.  Both sides appealed to the army.  The troops were split right down the middle.  Half joined the loyalists.  Half joined the coup.  Guan Xunxi gained initial advantage but squandered it in an attack against the rebel stronghold.  Du Vinh and Vhoi Tien, both great tacticians, chased the loyalists inside Thanglong.  In the city, troops causing great destruction and mayhem, the forces clashed.  The coup defeated loyal forces, wounded Guan Xunxi and seized control of the Royal Palace.  Phan Jainan and Guan Xunxi escaped their defeat, fleeing up the road to the stronghold of the other loyal lieutenant, South Court Duke Trieu Tran, at Monphu City.
The Dai Viet once a great kingdom was only able to obtain for themselves Korat, Kayah, Sagaing, Padishan, Manipur, Kachin, Assam and isolated Kedah.  Wedged in the mountains, they were the weakest of the three successor states of the old empire.
MAP CHANGES: City growth- Gauhati(7 GPv).  Kachin, Kayah, Korat, Manipur, Padishan, Sagaing are all Mahayana Buddhist (MB).

The Korniks did not like Italia's return to Vaviana (America).  The loss of Ciboney and a navy was painful.  Augustin knew that to strengthen his position required the destruction of the Adenites.  To that end, he gathered a force of 18,000 knights, 16,000 infantry at the border of Cherokee.  On the way the Choctaw and Brent's infantry had exacted tribute from Yuchi and Shawnee.  Meanwhile, Krolan's fleet of 40 galeasses linked with land forces to provide logistical support.  The attack on Cherokee triggered the Adenite main army of 34,500 warriors and 6000 mounteds.  The first engagement was a bloody draw.  The Kornik lost 16,000, the Adenites, 13,500.  Finally Augustin's cavalry forces gained a victory.  Losing only 5500, the equestrians slew 20,000.  The Adenites conceded Cherokee.  Disaster struck at Wenro.  The navy of 40 ships was attacked by the hated Italians.  Reduced to 18 ships, Krolon was forced to flee upriver.  The Italians didn't pursue they merely left.  On land, Augustin's 12,500 cavalry lost 7500 defeating the Adenites (7000 men) and the Wenro militia (10,000 men).  The Adenites gave ground.  Down to 5000, Augustin didn't pursue, wisely.
