Industrial Stage One: Renaissance
1496 Anno Domini

Next Turn's Orders Due: Monday, June 9th, 1997

ANNOUNCEMENTS

I'm Taking the Month of May Off:
After working long hours everyday (for little pay) for months, I have decided to take May off to take care of some personal affairs. During this summer, I will slow down all my Lords games (except 12) to catch my breath.

Price Changes: For those of you who have been sending and recieving turns by eMail and faxes from the Web, I will now charge 3.50 + 25¢ per BL per turn (That's 50¢ less) effective with the processing of the following turns (Lords 9: turn 124, Lords 10: turn 84, Lords 11, turn 24 and Lords 12, turn 1). Due to increasing paper, copying and mailing costs I must increase 'snail-mail' turns to $4.50 + 25 per BL per turn at the same time. I encourage all of you to join the internet as soon as possible.

Cultivated Regions: All cultivated regions can be colonized to 2 Gpv. If you can somehow get a region intensely cultivated, you can then colonize it to 3 Gpv.

Diplomacy Results: (ne)=no effect.

Player Letters: Because of all the eMail players, I can no longer effectively send inter-player messages.

Religion Action - Convert Pagan Chief (cpc): You can convert a neutral heathen region to your religion instead of having to resort to all those MW's. If your world religion (Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Hindu) can convert a pagan chief, the region will automatically follow.

Church & Mercantile NFP less: I have drastically reduced the amount of NFP a Religious Primate can get from his cathedrals. The same goes for Mercantile Combines.

LORDS 10 UNIT CONVERSION
Each point of cavalry and infantry (light or heavy) represents 500 fighting men. A transport or warship point = 1 vessel with 500 men aboard. A siege point = 5 siege towers or catapults or 500 sappers. A war elephant point = 50 elephants ridden by mahouts. A field fort point = 1 tower manned by 500 men each. A wall point = 10 feet of wall ramparts. An artillery point = 5 guns and assorted men. A siege artillery point = 1 mortar piece and supporing men.

THE GREAT ZIMBABWE
Malachai, Chief of Zimbabwe, Holder of the Five Twin Jackal Chair
DIPLOMACY: Mahabo(nt)
More gentiles were terrorized in order to reduce the imperial size. Vevinoumbi did his dirty work in Malawi well, gathering up all the people there and putting them in concentration camps in Ruvama. Samuel emptied the pacified lands of Brava and Lamu of people creating a no man's land between Zimbabwe and Aethiopia.

THE KRAKAS KINGDOM OF AETHIOPIA
Gobbu VI, Alem 'Elum, King of Aethiopia
DIPLOMACY: none
The Abyssinians stopped their usual expansion for a spell and stopped sea voyages until Googor readjusted his abacus. The saved treasure of the Aethiopians became the envy of thieves everywhere.
"Hey Rip, if I can steal but a hundreth of that fortune, I can live like a king."
"Yeah Cut, I know of a secret passage to get in..."
The city of Bona exists in Chalbi. In Kerkoure, Dango was built.

THE SULTANATE OF IEST
Ahmed al Kaffiyin, Sultan of Mahidia
DIPLOMACY: Azores(f), Asir(fa)

THE ALMORAVID EMIRATE OF ANDALUSIA

THE NORMAN KINGDOM OF ENGLAND
Buford, King of England
DIPLOMACY: none
As if nothing bad had happened, trade resumed with the Almoravids. Buford looked like a two-faced double-dealer but that's his job - he's the king. The vestiges of old Papal power were outlawed. It became convienent to label bad (or unpopular) priest as 'Innocentine' so they could be defrocked. There were tales of brigands dressing up as Popes stealing from traveling merchants.

THE NORMAN KINGDOM OF SAXONIA
Henry IV, King of the Saxons and of the Normans, Count of Blois
DIPLOMACY: Orkney(nt), Aragon(nt)
Some elegantly dressed Blackmoor statesmen arrived in the palace of Henry IV
"Help us, we are a poor Christian kingdom. We live on roots from the parched earth. We are oppressed by infidels. Rain never falls in our kingdom. Dogs live better than us. Can you spare a dime?"
"Who should I write the check to?"
"To Emi- ah - King Mohammad, Beloved of Christ, of the good land of Fulania."
"Okay I'll send you 1000 chests of gold. Are you sure you guys are Catholic?"
"Yep, We go to church five times a day."
So the Saxon king was hogswaggled into sending a huge amount of gold to an unrepetant infidel nation without him knowing it (until later when he was greatly embarassed). Heliz de la Fleche obtained on his own maps of the waters between Shetland and the Faroes.
MAP: Bruges is 9 Gpv. Cherbourg is 4. La Rochelle got to 6 Gpv. The royal road between Sete and Marseilles was completed by the Italians. Soissons no longer exists as a city (They had moved to Cherbourg).

Lords Cotto and Guarnual with a great fleet of warships and some troops made a return trip to the Caribbean to reestablish their presence there. The rebellous land of Ciboney was ignored. The Italians went after Haiti and pacified the New World island. There simply wasn't enough men to genocide the natives. And the manpower went down when the Italians built the city of Rolfo by the Antillan Sea. What was left, a handful of troops, landed and conquered Arawak using cavalry and artillery to blast the savages to submission. Cotto was hurt in the battle. Guarnual trapped some game animals native to Cuba. Pope Sixtus and Valila traveled around southern Europe building new abbeys. Influence was low - not every effort was a success.
