1444 Anno Domini

Next Turn's Orders Due: Friday, 14 June 1996

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Orders Deadline: Get those orders in by 6:00 pm MST or I will be physically unable to process your orders. This is how I can manage this latest three week turnaround.

Gunpowder/Greek Fire Points: Any batch of Gunpowder points or Greek Fire must be used the turn made or they will go flat at the end of the turn. All existing stores must be used by the end of this coming turn.

Tithes (Religion Primate): Any Religious Primate attempting the EXT action will get nothing for it. There is no automatic 5% tithe either.

Mercantile Combine Actions Table
Action(Code) Minimal Cost
Establish Factor (emf) 3 BAC and 5 GP
Open Branch Office (obo) 6 BAC and 10 GP
Acquire Monopoly (amn) 8 BAC and 30 GP
Found Cartel City (fct) 8 BAC and 15 GP
Establish Merc. Colony (ecl) 8 BAC plus cost of colony
Gain Preferential Treatment (gpt) 3 BAC and 20 GP
Discredit Competitor (dcm) 3 BAC or Intel Action

The Cultivation Process: When a city is built in a wilderness, the region will become cultivated in 100 years. If a city is built in a steppe, the region will become cultivated in 50 years. If a city in a steppe or wilderness is expanded, cultivation will occur sooner (by 1 turn, about 5 years).

Jungles Can Become Cultivated: If you build a Level-2 Megalith in a jungle region which has to be supported each turn, the region will become cultivated in 50 years. If the project support is not supported or if the region is looted, scorched earth or depopulated in any way, the region will revert to jungle, and the process will have to done from scratch all over again.

Blackmailing Converts: I give up. You can use intel SD to assist your DC actions, starting this next turn.

SAH Trade Route: You can trade across the Sahara without any of the conduits so long as you control an oasis route and the potential trade partner controls an oasis route on the other side. Such trade is considered SAH (Saharan) and will get 0.5 of your trade potential. Note that is you DO control the oases and make it to the other side, your trade route will be LTD (Land Terrain Dangerous) with a 0.6 trade potential. This solution was offered by Thomas Harlan on the Internet after a weird debate about camel shipping points.

Bombard Action (BM), Renaissance Only: For those of you with siege artillery, you can bombard those city walls from a safe distance. For each 6 months spent on bombard each siege artilliery unit can knock down some walls based on its artillery QR value and the siege QR value of the city walls being blasted. Use enough siege artillery and those walls truly will be dusted. This action can be done concurrent with a passive siege (PS). Bombarding will cause much collateral damage inside the city. You can Bombard an army performing a Passive Siege from inside a city but the damage won't be as great against them.
Movement cost: 6+
This rule was suggested by Jonathan White. Bombard will eventually have expanded uses in the Industrial Era.

LORDS 10 UNIT CONVERSION
Each point of cavalry and infantry (light or heavy) represents 500 fighting men. A transport or warship point = 1 vessel with 500 men aboard. A siege point = 5 siege towers or catapults or 500 sappers. A war elephant point = 50 elephants ridden by mahouts. A field fort point = 1 tower manned by 500 men each. THE KINGDOM OF BORNU
Bolokar
DIPLOMACY: none
The Obete tribes, some 24,000 warriors overran Kanem and attacked Bornu itself. King Onumbap was a skilled combat leader and killed off all invaders with his 9000 riders and 15,500 spearthorwers. There was little time to savor the victory. Onumbap died of dementia and left no family. His lieutenant Bolokar reluctantly became the new chieftain.

THE KINGDOM OF GALAM
Jittu Monkey-Eater
DIPLOMACY: none
The Galamese are still here. They are making twig sculptures. The latest composition, 'Five Warriors and a Skunk' has won first prize at the Lomé Art Festival.

THE SUPREMACY OF TOGO
Juguntala, Supreme Oba of Togo
DIPLOMACY: none
The great monolith, Amaka, was completed in 1442. Upon its finish, cloudy mists came down from the sky giving everyone a peppy feeling. Even with all the euphoria, some Iesti missionaries converted one-fourth of the Mossi populace to Sunni Muslim.

THE BINI KINGS OF KONGO
Ipachou, King of Ben-Congo
DIPLOMACY: none
Early in 1441, Poaruta was strangled and his seven year old son Golla was decapitated. The three year old Ipachou was declared king. Then about 10,000 of the 34,000 soldiers deserted. At least the southerners didn't attack.

THE BANTU KINGS OF KONGO

THE GREAT ZIMBABWE
Ueli Yaka Dan, Chief of Zimbabwe, Holder of the Five Twin Jackal Chair
DIPLOMACY: none

THE MOZAMBI KINGDOM OF ZIMBABWE
Ober Chumb, True Chief of Zimbabwe, Big Banana of Sakalava
DIPLOMACY: none
Ober wouldn't believe his insane luck. If the Rozwi faciton wouldn't attack then maybe he's the true chief after all.

OBETE MIGRATION
Ngudamo and his migratory fighters went on a round about route towards the north. Motaba, Mankim, Mbang, Garoua, Koumogo and Kreda didn't especially appeal themselves to these Bantu tribesmen. But Kanem did. Unfortunately the residents had horses and an awesome leader. So much for the Obete.

THE KRAKAS KINGDOM OF AETHIOPIA
Daroumde, Ben Burado, King of Aethiopia
DIPLOMACY: none
The Lion and all his cubs guarded the country in case trolls (and their funny hair and navels) decided to ruin the landscape. And speaking of landscape - Darfur became a (2/8)CP region. Kerma, Hafun, Dunqunab, Amada and Djibouti bloated bigger. Quada had a new city for them called Abeche. Aden's fancy new port if called Turbah. Cats and dogs are getting along in Berbera.

William (IV) the Wise, King of the Saxons and of the Normans, Count of Blois
DIPLOMACY: none
King William and his fleet of 45 elite frigates and 110 galleys patrolled the English Channel while an army of exactly 2000 cavalry (the seldom seen Order of St. Gregory's shield) gathered at Rouen to demonstrated its power. THE NORDIK KINGDOM OF THAERY
Reginal Robberweasel, King of the Danes
DIPLOMACY: none
Vanger loaded 15,000 infantrymen on board 15 grucogs and 10 frigates and set sail for the North Atlantic. By 1412, he met with Prince Kvark in Iceland who got the purse and set sail to Gronland. Vanger then attacked the Euro-Pagans of Iceland. The Icelanders were not well led and were easily subdued. Leaving a heavy garrison behind, Vanger took his troops to Gronland. While on the way, he spotted hundreds of Venetian galleons rowing through the icy waters. The fools wouldn't answer his hails. There were a few Inuit to slap around. These eskimoes fought fiercely. Until they were wiped out. Having secured these islands, Vanger returned to Iceland where Kvark awaited him. Kvark related his voyage to 'Vinland' and the many Christian nations there.
Closer to home, Liege, The Hague, Kiel and Avente attracted new population. Groningen was built as Freisland's North Sea port. Government customs agents kept an eye on the Hanseatic League. Native wasn't popular in Hordalands. Someone needs to convert these heathens.

THE HANSEATIC LEAGUE (Rheinisch Zirkel)
Karl Siethan
DIPLOMACY: none
The Hanseatic League opened up warehouses in Wiczin and Paris. The Lyon town council was even persuaded to pay for the cost of building a factor for them. Talks with the various mercenaries pools were fruitless. They refused to go through a middle-man without a guaranteed contract.

THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF POLSKA
Ashka Umashaski, Cizar Reborn, First Citizen of the New World Order
DIPLOMACY: Bochnia(a)
The People's Republic called up a general conscription and signed up some 105,000 men to fight and die for the country. Jarva gained recognition from the Papacy by simply reaffirming his Roman Catholicism. Jarva, however, gave up trying to militarily convert Galich (which costed him money). He made his way to Kuyavia to collect the new mass of bodies and then returned to the campaign zone. He left an insufficient garrison in Galich and they rebelled. This force plus 5000 People's Rangers attacked and forced tribute from Psecheleni Özu. Since these ex-farmers moved so slow and complained all the time, Jarva never made it to Kiev. He died in 1444 and there was trouble for it.
Ashka Umashaski resented Jarva's attempt to style himself a king without paying for it. He took over the state apparatus in Warsaw. The People's Republic exerted its authority to Chernigov, Cherven, Kassubia, Kuyavia, Lithuania, Lyubbech, Masuria, Obodria, Pomerania, Sandomir and Sorbia. The regions of Bochnia, Moravia, Silesia and Volhynia broke away to form its own duchy. Moldavia with its new port and Özu rebelled and the inexperienced troops ran for the woods (some became forest bandits, others joined Vitus Fossa, the rest went home).

THE DUCHY OF BOCHNIA
Vitus Fossa
DIPLOMACY: none
The Bochnia army was strengthened by Jarva's army to swell to about 55,000 men. Vitus Fossa, unlike his former master, was a true noble and would not let this godless horde crush the good countries of Europe.

THE KINGDOM OF THE BALTS
Ivano II, King of Baltica, Prince of Novgorod
DIPLOMACY: Prussia(f), Seversk(a)
The royal road from Vitebsk to Moskva was completed. Latvia became cultivated. A full alliance was drafted up in Seversk, Prussia was merged into the great Kingdom. At court, Piotr and Ruruk didn't get along. There might be trouble someday.
The Volga Balts army of 16,000 sappers and 6000 cavalry passed through Ryazan and Seversk.

THE UKRAIN EMPIRE (Volga Balts)
Nikolai II, Prince of Kubishev, Emperor of the Ukrain
DIPLOMACY: Psechulen Empire(a)
Nikolai went on a mad dash across Baltic forests and the Catholic steppe to Crimea and made a bold proposal: 'Join us and be safe'. The huge bribe helped out big time. The new basileus, Xenophon, agreed to be subordinate to Nikolai. That bold move led Nikolai to change the name of his holdings to the Empire of the Ukrains.
The Psechelen Empire consisted of only Atelkuzo and Crimea. They lost Pinsk and the garrison in Goryn rebelled after Özu was invaded by the Poles.

THE DIHAJ KHANAT
Ridwan, Mighty Servant of Allah
DIPLOMACY: none

THE DAR AL ISLAM - ARBILIQ CALIPHATE
An Nasir, Kalifat Rasul Allah, Commander of the Faithful
DIPLOMACY: Charsionon(a)
A disturbing event occurred in Crete in 1442. A horde of 50,000 skull faced riders wielding 'fire-swords' suddenly appeared outside Candia and proceeded to sack, burn and slaughter the populace there. An Nasir rushed to Antioch, loaded as much cavalry that could fit in the 325 warships and arrived to Crete to find a devastated landscape, charry and gray. What few inhabitants who survived that were brave enough to talk, recounted terrible demons destroying everything in their path before they vanished into the abyssmal planes.
To the north, Jomal and Abd al Allah of the Yakhibi left Isauria to invaded Paphlagonia with the cavalry forces. The wilderness was pacified and were forced to become Muslim. Tabriz, Nicosea, Sarid, Tirnova, Najaf, Bandar, Samarra, Hamadan, Homs, Hawalli, Siraf, Niksar, Hasakar, Damascus and Siffia popped up 1 level of gold value each. A caliphal road connected Hawalli with Basra.

THE HARAYUK RAJPUT EMPIRE

Rupika Nayakaditya, Khan of Khans, Master of Kaunaj
DIPLOMACY: no effect
The Rajputs did their part to destroy the Kosalans. Khan Nayakaditya with his 12,500 heavy knights, 35,000 diet knights and 190 battering rams occupied Vanga and pacified that place without a fight. Rusichatta was taken too. The Old Master got back to Maghada to take his pain pills. The Jats won't do anything without a city. Goa grew to 5 Gpv.

THE CHALUKYA KINGDOM OF BANAVASI
Chipchigupta, 'Monkey-Boy', Maharaja in Banavasi
DIPLOMACY: Andhra(a), Vengi(t)
A royal marriage for Chipchigupta cemented an alliance with the Andhra where the legendary monkey was said to come from. The royal couple weren't ready for kids. The Maharaja had more fun chasing his wife around the bed than actually being in bed with her. The Vengi chief (while he was still alive) and 9000 cavalry and 2000 infantry attacked the Kosalans and plundered their homeland. They didn't have much of a treasury but at least the Kosalan cause was lost. The port of Kollam Bow was built upon the ruins of the old town. Banavasi grew to 2 Gpv.

THE FITTERADA DYANSTY OF KOSALA
The Fitterada died very bloodily in their homeland, while Vanga was taken by the Harayuk. Assam, Bhutan, Chela, Kosala, Pundra and Sikkim are neutral.

The Burmese saw some opportunity to expand to the west.

THE VIET VICEROYALTY OF MAKASSAR
Zhen Wu, Viceroy of Makassar
DIPLOMACY: Andamans(f), Perak(fa), Timor(c), Sri Lanka(nt), Medan(f)
The Medan explorers took a chance at another open sea route. It seemed that prevailing winds can take them from the Nicobar Sea to the Coromandel Coast in less time that coast hugging would take. Unfortunately, they could not go back the way they came so they settled at Sri Lanka to keep Padjang company. Despite his presence and army, Hanso Lo suffered a set back in Perak. Apparantly, the former rogue owed some favors that he has failed to make good.
Zheng Shing was bitten by the fly of the Vootoowak. He died. The unwise Zhen Wu was the new Viceroy.

THE DAI VIET GUO
Yan Tao, Wang Dai Viet
DIPLOMACY: Kedah Free State(ea)
Scandal in the court occurred early in 1411 when someone murdered crown prince Vung Tau. The King, Yan Tao, was found to be responsible when the South Court Duke Lao Cai looked into the matter. Lao Cai declared Yan Tao to be a criminal and called for his removal. For his remonstration, Lao Cai was liquidated within a week. The rest of the palace lost their confidence in their king and the Princes feared for their lives.
Eventually Phan Thiet became the new crown prince but he was too reckless, engaging in numerous dangerous hobbies - such as rice wine drinking contests followed by midnight body surfing, cobra dodging, short bow boar hunting, flaming sword dances followed by excessive feasting on delicate fish filled with small bones. Somehow, he survived all this but was not in the best of heath. He died in 1444 when an anteater bit him.
Nha Trang, the disgrunted brother, enjoyed his visit in Kedah. The Free City gladly joined the Thai. Two new cities were built: Loangphrabang in Laos. Yuanjiang in Yunnan. Thanglong grew to 15 Gpv, perhaps the largest in the world.

THE MAHIYANA BUDDHIST MISSION
Karmasungi, Abbot of the Relics

THE HIDDEN DRAGON OF CHEKIANG
Quan Xian, Celestial Emperor of Chekiang
DIPLOMACY: Omchu(c), Lichou(f)
Xian gave up on Kedah. He had his men work on the mountain districts to the west. A little bit of blackmail went a long way. Zhuzhou, Kwangchou, Zhaoti, Chiangling and Souchou grew to be larger cities. Amoi, Fuchien's new port made all the fishermen happy. The Emperor's Road extended from Kweidu in Szechwan to Chengdu.

THE CIAO CHINESE KINGDOM
Wolai, King of the Northern Prefectures
DIPLOMACY: Bandao(f), Mudan(a), Parhae(f)
Wolai made his next son Ze Zoi his heir. The Hoi Ling line went extinct with the death of the child Zhong-Wu. There were some mysterious circumstances and the rumor said that he was pushed into the quicksand. Yencheng was given a major facelift.

THE ADENA CONFEDERACY
Snow Fox, Great Chief of Adena

Because Matthew Stonespirit and his followers had abandoned their lands and moved to Michigamea as beggars, the Adenans were moved to convert to Catholism and accept the primacy of the Atakapan Church. They were the only Catholics to do so. Cagone and Big Elk did not accept the conversion. They left the Confederacy as did Osage and Quapaw. The Sciotos who were under the martial law of medicine men were happy to hear of the conversion and became friendly as Christians. In exchange for their loyalty, Stonespirit gave Atakapa to the Confederacy.
