Piracy/Banditry rules are now in effect. Refer to the trade supplement. An Asterisk by the trade code means that route has been hit.

Sale of Surplus Agro:

Countries with an ESI of 50 or less and Countries with an Agrarian economic base may convert agro into gold or nfp: 1 agro = 1 gold or 2 agro = 1 nfp.

Countries with an ESI greater than 50 and up to 100: 2 agro = 1 gold or 4 agro = 1 nfp.

Countries with an ESI greater than 100 may convert 2 agro into 1gp towards an investment (AQR, Intel, etc.) or 5 agro into 1 nfp toward a megalithic construct. Slave economic bas may instead convert 4 agro into 1 snfp (which must be used that turn).

To change the equipment class of troops, the cost is full for gold and nothing for nfp. For example, if a renaissance country wishes to convert 40 medium cav into 40 heavy cav, the cost is 40x5=200 gp. This also takes a leader.

When Kings are in their capital, their command radius (1-6, with 3 the mode) adds to their CCR. When ruling, they add 150% of command to CCR and 1 to Infra. When administering, they add 1 to CCR and Command to Infra.

Regents and Heirs are less effective. For primacies, secret empires and combines, ruling helps establish locations. It is possible to be beyond the CCR for these countries, but each link counts as one for control.

Color maps now cost $1.00, as my color cartridges don’t last nearly as long as I thought they did.

A drastic reversal of fortunes in the Dutch-Umman conflict was suffered by the European powers from 1595 to 1597. The Danes, Culdis and VOC™ abandoned the war effort while Himrad joined the Africans. The third Umman Armada swept the hopelessly outnumbered Dutch and Russians from the sea and reestablished Umman naval supremacy.

Unit conversion: 1cav or inf = 500 men ;1 warship or transport = 1 ship with a crew of 500; 1 artillery = 20 field guns with crews of 25; 1 sa = 1 cannon; 1 s = 50 catapults; wallpoints are 7'+3' per point high; a field fort is a castle with 500 men.

Europe

Western Europe 50mc 24mi 5mw 2ma 2msa 1mt 2mec 2mea

Denmark

Christian, King of Denmark

Diplomacy: Micmac(aw)

Christian had betrayed his Black Muslim friends to join the Europeans; now he betrayed his European allies just when they needed his assistance most – although he continues to supply the starving Russians with food. At least his fleet is safe. Cornwall and Holstein expanded to 2 gpv and the regions were filled with new farm projects (so the Danes will be able to send even more food to their ancestral enemies.) The Danes had to take out a small loan, as the Russians aren’t passing along any more Chinese money.

There was much confusion amongst the Danish leadership. Sven Egar waited patiently in Frisk for mercenaries (who were never hired) to show up. Olaf spent 3 years exploring the Gulf of St. Lawrence (instead of the 4 months he needed). He has compiled some pretty detailed maps of the area. Other leaders followed generals around giving unwanted advice (BA is not available as a leader intel action).

Lodin Svealaanson journeyed to Vinland with 8 elite and 7 regular warships. It took him two years to get there. He joined up with Vater Jon, recently from Sjaelland, and his 25 transports, 10,000 knights and 200 guns. Together with Jan Joohson they set sail for Micmac and attacked the primitive tribesmen. It was a glorious day for Danish Empire as 7000 spear wielding savages were cut to pieces by Danish guns and run into the ground by the cavalry. 500 men were lost – had they lost any more, they would not have been able to garrison Micmac. They had no time to return.

Umman and Danish missionaries were active in the Balearics. The Ummans were slightly more successful, but between them, they eliminated the last of the Eastern Orthodox adherents. 2/3 of the island is Black Muslim. The Danes were unable to restore economic ties with Italy (they’re still sulking about Sardinia).

Culdi Council

Flewellen, Scion of St. Camber

Consecration: none

The Culdis and the Imamate finally came into direct conflict. The Imam attempted to destroy the Culdis’ influence in Holland, but the Culdis were prepared. Influence remained the same in spite of the attacks. The Culdi government was damaged by Imamate attacks but the faith of the people remains unshaken.

Conversion of the Dutch continues, although the Culdi majorities are now being used by the Black Muslims as a weapon to attack the Dutch. The Council cannot begin collecting a tithe from the Dutch until the royal family converts.

The VOC™ (Hanseatic League)

Nicholas, Governor General of the VOC™

Capitalization: Riga(ho) Lubeck(cc) Knuteholm(mf) Varna(mf) Khazar(bo) Bogazgol(bo)

When Hugo died in 1597, a power struggle broke out amongst the cartel members. Nicholas of Riga won – the VOC™ is now centered at Riga and its directors are Eastern Orthodox – which will facilitate future attempts to establish themselves in Russia (although it will make Denmark – and, eventually, the Dutch, more difficult.)

Many attempts to establish locations were successful, in spite of the minimal time and money at each spot. Attempts failed in Rosden, Reval, Volknov and Murom. The new director appears to have given up on trade with the New World, since he pulled his representative back home.

Kroninkrijk der Nederlanden

Frederick Henry, King of the Dutch

Diplomacy: none

A wave of unrest, fomented by Black Muslims, swept through the Culdis of Holland. Himrad agents caused problems in Provence and Lyonnais; the Imam and the STIS© stirred up trouble in Saxony, Burgundy, Franconia, Bavaria, Nordgau, Languedoc, Brittany, Hesse, Poitou, and Normandy. The Imam’s Vizier was killed as he tried to sneak across the border into Poitou. Late in 1597, an agitator was spotted in Franconia, but he escaped. Also in 1597, a rebellion failed in Friesland. All these attempts ultimately failed -- some due to incompentent operatives, some due to lack of a sufficient number of Culdis, and some due to the inherent loyalty of the Dutch people to their beloved king and country. Meanwhile, the people continue to abandon the old ways – about 2/3 of the country profess the new faith. Many wonder when the royal family will finally convert.

The Danes deserted early in 1595, leaving the Russians and Dutch to face the Ummans alone. The Dutch had 28 warships and 2 galleons under the joint command of Wim Kessell and Henry Blanchart while the Russians had 41 warships and 16 galleons under Princess Catherine and Admiral Anton. They waited for reinforcements. In May, 504 Umman Galleons arrived. It took less than a month for the Ummans to destroy every ship flying a European flag. Princess Catherine and Henry Blanchart were captured during the debacle, Anton died. The Ummans lost 28 galleons. In August, a fleet of 55 Dutch warships, loaded with cavalry, entered the Gates of Hercules. They faced not only the remaining 476 Umman galleons but also 70 galleons and 16 warships of the Imam’s, led by the legendary Sagremor the Unruly. This time the Ummans lost 9 ships and the Imam lost two galleons. The entire Dutch navy was sunk and Hans de Ruyter barely escaped with his life.

Young Frederick Henry came of age and succeeded to his Grandfather’s throne without further incident. Dutch assassins wounded General Bababalouk in Murcia, preventing his withdrawal from Iberia. The government and treasury were well protected and the economy has nearly recovered.

Christian Kingdom of Talavera (open, but hopeless)

Joost van den Voondel, King of Talavera

Diplomacy: none

The Ummans sent Joost money so he could pay his troops.

Rokkid Spain (open)

Juan Carlos, Malik al Andalus

Diplomacy: none

The Imam freed the people of Algarve from the Russians but the Algarvis prefer self-government to an indifferent despot. They have joined the growing number of independent states in Spain. Spain continues to convert.

People's Democratic Republic of Italy

Shakira, Queen of Sicily and Italy

Diplomacy: none

Shakira continued to stay neutral. The Danes wanted to reestablish trade.

Eastern Europe 11mec 12mei 90mc 10ma 8mi 2msa 1mea

Holy Roman Empire of Russia

Mikhail, Czar of Russia, Empress of the East

Diplomacy: none

The naval war went badly. The Ummans sank the last ships of the second European Armada. The Third Armada, composed of 94 Russian Warships and 20 Russian galleons (both the Danes and Dutch declined to contribute any ships this time) got as far as the Bay of Biscay when they were beset by a host of STIS© and Umman assassins. Ygor, the only leader with the ships, was wounded 5 times by the STIS© and kidnapped 3 times by the Ummans (it’s easy to kidnap someone when they’re dead). The fleet had to take shelter in Utrecht. It’s actually fortunate that they didn’t get any further.

In August of 1596, an entirely mercenary army of 4500 foot soldiers, 10,000 cavalry, 40 artillery, 1 cannon and 20 elite guns crossed into Algarve from Andalusia led by Agilulfo, a mullah from Parq’rh. The Spanish had been unable (or unwilling) to stop the Imam’s soldiers from traipsing across their country. The mercenaries attacked the 12,500 leaderless Russians. 6500 mercenaries died killing 8500 Russian and then cut down the rest in flight.

Russian leaders canvassed the countryside looking for STIS© men. They didn’t find any – but they’re sure making the secret empires nervous. The Danes continue to send food, allowing the dredging of the Volga to continue. Kildansk, the Russian diplomat captured while stealing Malta away from the Italians 6 years ago, was mysteriously released. His Mbundun captors freed the 79-year old man by leaving him adrift is a small boat off the coast of Greece. Some fishermen found him and brought him to shore where he regaled them with terrifying stories of his imprisonment and repeated escape attempts. He died two years later. Pirates raided some of the ships trading with Afghanistan.

The Kingdom of Armenia

Nicostrato, Shah of Armenia, Tool of the Fatimids

Diplomacy: none

Acasis II died of a hemophilia at the age of 15 (his coronation day). His uncle, Nicostrato, took over. Nicostrato was widely believed to be an agent of the Fatimids, so some dynastic turmoil resulted. Nicostrato kept Abasgia, Arbiliq, Armenia, Arran, Bithnia, Cappadocia, Daylam, Galatia, Kuban, Kurdistan, Optimaton, Pontus, Shirvan and Urmia. He also has the patriarch and spies.

The Lydian League (open)

Dioneo Oligarch of Ephesus

Diplomacy: none

General Dionea and the Psidian Ally, Philostrato, refused to bow to the puppet shah of Armenia. Charsionon, Isauria, Lazica, Lydia, Paphlagonia, Phrygia and Psidia joined them. Azerbaijan, Edessa and Terek revolted due to distance and isolation.

AFRICA

West Africa 7mi 16mc 1ma

Islam (Yoruba/Umma)

Rucat II, Sword of Islam Europe

Diplomacy: Kabilya(ne) Algeria(ne) Oujda(ne)

Despite minimal attempts by the Ummans to suppress the information, word got out that the great Umman coastal fleets would be disbanded and their crews retrained for war. In all, 600 transports were scrapped, greatly reducing the economy. The extra manpower meant that 504 new galleons could be built (financed, in part, by a gift of 2,000,000 gold from the Himrad Sultana.) This third armada left its port in Senegal in March of 1056 A.H. and arrived in the Gates of Hercules in May. They swept away all opposition (see Dutch turn). The Imam arrived in time to help turn away a second attack.

Rucat gave a speech to commemorate the first real Umman victory in 12 years of war:

"Let’s talk peace. I want to be an honorary European so that Europe being for Europeans will include me."

Sword of Europe

General Bababalouk was left stranded in Spain when a Dutch Assassin wounded him. Another Dutch agent attempted to kidnap the wounded warrior.

Desiderius Erasmus was shipped to Himrad. The Ummans opened trade with the Talaverans and sent them some money. The Spanish continue to convert to the Shining Path. In Andalusia, Extramadura, Galacia, Jaen, Leon and Portugal there are fewer Sunnis. Khalem is now cultivated. Diplomacy in the pacified regions continues without success. The Ummans relinquished control of the Canary Islands.

Himrad Sultanette

Landeria III, Sultana of Dara, Heart of Islam

Diplomacy: Malta (ne) Sibut(f) Radom(t) Douala(ne) Yaounde(ne) Makurra(ne)

The Himrad Sultana finally joined the European war. Two thousand chests of gold were sent to the fabulously wealthy Ummans while her own economy declined. Himrad agents, operating from Malta, helped the Imam and the STIS© stir the Culdis of Holland into rebellion.

3000 Coptic slaves were freed and allowed to leave the country as Landeria took the first step towards giving up slavery. Tall walls were built around Valetta in Malta. Warra, Sitona and Mzunga Arudi all expanded, while in Chiroptera and Miayar, new sewers were built.

Missionary work continued in Alwa, Aswan, Amhara, Baraka and Tondou. Diplomatic efforts in already friendly Malta and Makurra had no effect. Other missions failed due to lack of bribes. A Dutch general was sent to Mandara for safekeeping – he was put to work in the Logone-Ouham National Park.

The Imamate

Ayatollah Khomeni XVI, Guardian of the Shining Path Voice of Islam

Consecration: none

Since Rucat is too proud to beg for money, he sent the Imam to do it for him. The Ayatollah convinced the Himrad Sultana to send a huge shipment of treasure (about 2 million more gold than Himrad received from Umma during the last great war). The Imam sent 1000 gold.

The Imam’s agents ran amuck in Holland, to little effect. In Spain, Agilulfo was more successful, driving the Russians from Algarve with his mercenary army. He then abandoned the troops and went into hiding. With so much espionage going on, there wasn’t much time for religious affairs. Dostoyevsky was spotted in Catalonia, but he eluded capture by the local authorities.

Mbundu, Land of Pagans

Okonkwo III, Last true afro-pagan on earth

Diplomacy: Cape(c ) Swakop(t) Kabwe(t)

Okonkwo III was eager to prove his manhood by crushing the traitor, Nybeki. Assassins wounded both the Rebel General and his minion. Large armies were built and were sent forth to reclaim the lost jungles.

Osbek sailed up the Congo River with 12,500 zebra riders, 140 guns and 350 catapults. He landed in Nia Nia in July of 1595, then continued by road to Buganda. There were 16 castles and 6000 men defending the area. The Mbunduns had the advantage in numbers and scouting, so the rebel Bugandans were cut to pieces and then forced to believe in the Monkey God. Trade with the Fatimids has been reestablished.

Basano was supposed to have a large merecenary army to accompany his 2500 zebra riders and 20 elite guns, but the Imam had outbid him for most of the troops. He got 1000 mercenary footmen. They set out for Mitumba, arriving in June of 1596. The Mitumbans had 3000 infantry to oppose them. By September, the rebel leader had been captured and the army put to flight. Basano lost 500 cavalry.

General Tancredo led the main force with his host of 25,000 zebra cavalry. He headed straight for the heart of the rebel territory. In May of 1596, he attacked the luanguans, losing 500 men over the course of a month-long campaign before slaughtering the 3000 infantry who opposed him. He continued into Nyasa, crossing mountains to reach the rebel general. Nybeki had 6000 zebra riders and 3000 infantry under his command. Great scouting, nearly 3 to 1 odds and excellent leadership allowed the Mbunduns to crush the opposition with few losses. 5000 cavalry were left to garrison the Nyasans. Now with 17,500 zebramen left, they moved on to Kilwa, arriving in May of 1597. 7000 infantry attempted to halt Tancredo, but were swept away. The Mbunduns lost 500 men in two months of fighting.

Trade with the New World continues; 1 transport was lost on the trip. 3000 Coptic refugees, released by Landeria, have fled to Mbundu. 4,000 chests of gold were sent to the STIS© traders to help them out of their hard times. The Mbunduns continue to modernize their country; soon they’ll be Renaissance. Bandits hit the lucrative overland Umma-Mbundun trade route as the caravans passed through the jungles of Himrad.

Nybeki was in no condition to hold off the Mbundun horde. He was killed and his kingdom conquered.

STIS©

Kalif-Sied, CEO of the STIS©, Arrow of Islam

Capitalization: Zeila(mf) Berbera(mf) Cape(mf) Parqrh(cc) Sri Lanka(cc) Haiti(mf-revolts)

The combine was short of money, so they had to ask for charity. The Mbunduns, although wracked with internal turmoil, agreed to help out and shipped 4 million gold coins; each stamped with the image of the Monkey God. He invested this windfall in his university.

A fleet of 17 warships was sent to the New World with Admiral Mohomad and Princess Camile. Together they successfully established a presence in Ligha, Haiti. Then they quarreled. Mohomad thought they should set up their own corporation to exploit the locals (since the leadership back home is more interested in closing potential trade routes than opening them). The young princess thought loyalty was more important. The crews of 9 of the warships sided with Mohomad, 8 with Camile. After a short battle, Camile retreated with 5 ships; Mohomad had lost but one.

As usual, many STIS© efforts failed due to lack of money. The STIS© missed out on a golden opportunity to establish themselves in Hindustan by being too lazy to figure out the appropriate route to take (it turns out Kanem isn’t adjacent Surashtra).

Fatimid Caliphate

Al Haidi, Lady Caliph, Nation Killer, Shield of Islam

Diplomacy: Madina(a) Jazirah(f)

The Fatimid navy continues to grow – although the Ummans now have a vastly superior navy. While other European and African countries wasted their resources fighting one another, the Fatimids continue to concern themselves solely with internal matters. Tihamat was slave raided after a brief battle between Princess Mahsa’s 39,500 fanatics and 18,500 light cavalry of the Tihamat emir’s. Superior quality and numbers gave the victory to the Fatimids after 5500 losses. The slaves were used to finish building the Royal Road from Madina to Asir. Much conversion was done; in Aden, Dulaym, Rhodes, and Ras Hafun the numbers of Black Muslims are increasing. Trade was begun again with the Mbunduns. A death in the Armenian royal family has revealed the Fatimid’s designs on Armenia before they had intended.

Turghil IV, Boy King of Afhganistan

Diplomacy: Ushrusana(t) Makran(ne) Mand(a) Luristan(f) Hormuz(nt) Khuttal(ea)

Chancellor Jafar died in 1057 A.H.; fortunately, his successor is a loyal man – Turghil III died the following year, leaving behind a son who would not come a age for another year. There were no problems and, at the age of 15, Turghil IV ascended the throne.

The Afghans continue to keep to themselves and continue to transform their society and economy. Some spies and assassins were fired.

Empire of Hindustan (Alimid)

Medak, Emperor of Hindustan, Maharaja of India, Sultan of Dehli, Caliph of the East

Diplomacy: Gangas(f) Bihar(f) Maldives(f) Chitor(f)

Malabar(f) Satava(ea) Arik-Ta(ce)

No one took Medak seriously, just because of his humble beginnings. To make himself feel more important he added several honorary titles to his name. He continued the process of dismantling the great war-fleet, settling the sailors in towns and villages across India. Because the treacherous passes into Tibet do not allow efficient trade, ships replaced the caravans. Pirates took advantage of the lack of escort ships and raided the rich merchant vessels. Cities grew in Dravisdia, Bihar, Chela, Dahala, Kakatiya, the Maldives, and Socotra. New cities were founded in Malabar (Goa), Satava (Satavabad), Gujarat (Ujjain) and Gangas (Mysore). Admiral Murad took a small expedition to search for the fabled land of Zanzibar. He found the island of Arik-Ta, where he was told by the simple tribesmen that Zanzibar had been destroyed long ago by their ancestors, the Kasshaki. On the shore, Murad watched a battle between the zebra-riding Mbunduns and some native people.

In religious matters, that low devotion continues to plague the priesthood. Medak ordered the construction of the Great Mosque of Islamabad in his capital city. It has inspired the people to become more devout. The Alimids granted the STIS© permision to open offices in Socotrabad and Somantha, but the traders were too lazy to do anything about it. They did send a single transport to begin trade, however.

Wen Fu’s Kul’sary Rebellion (open, but hopeless)

Wen Fu, Lord of Kul’sary

Diplomacy: none

Due to famine, Wen Fu was unable to pay for his troops. This has led to mass desertions. The government was dismissed, and all the roads were allowed to fall into ruins. Without a garrison, Cim revolted. Bekdas lost two levels due to starvation while Amakit vanished entirely.

Indravarman III, god Emperor of Siam

Diplomacy: none

The Siamese continued to build their economy. The cities of Phayao, Vungta, Baharu, Kotabaru, Macao, Louanghrabang, Bumaipo, Konorak, Prasat, Colombo, Monywa and Narvati all expanded. A new city was built in Kanchow. City projects accompanied each expansion and further projects were added in many other cities and regions. Ships were rearranged to make trade more efficient – although none could be sent to Japan; they’re currently beyond the trade range of the Siamese.

Much religious activity took place as the government tries to bring together the disparate sects of Buddhism, Islam and the Daoist cults. Missionaries visited Turhut, Laos, Burma, Annam, Chienan, Johor, Kalinga and Kanchow.

The Chinese made no effort to punish Wen-Fu. Their most learned scholars report that technological breakthroughs are imminent. Pirates raided ships trading with Mataram.

Nagatobi Shounate

Ari, 94th Emperor of Nihon

Diplomacy: no effect

Taishou Sanyo was given a large bribe and sent on a diplomatic mission in the New World. When the savages refused to join the empire, he decided to take matters into his own hands and teach the primitives what a Renaissance nation can do. He picked the wrong nation to attack – the Bengkhal lead the New World in technology. His 2500 men died, but he escaped to his fleet. Of course, he can’t return to Japan – so he’s taken up the life of a pirate.

In Kodiak, a large force of Japanese ships and troops are assembling. A quaint savage visited them and brought a gift of a copper engraving for the emperor. His talk of treaties and trade agreements (as if the Japanese we his equals!) brought much amusement to the men. They played along for a few months, then sent him home.

More ships were put on the Siam and China routes. The cities of Matsuyama and Totori expanded. Missionary efforts directed against Kwakiutl and Bengkhal failed, mainly due to extreme distance. China continues to convert, however. The numbers of Shintos in Chehsi, Fuchien, Hupei, Kiangsu, Kiangtung, Liaotung, Lichou and Turfan increased.

Twilight Kwakiutl

Gui-Madilbe, Twilight King of Kwakiutl

Diplomacy: Timishian(ne) Tlingit (ne)

Gui-Madilbe sat on his island home and ruled. He’s a pretty good administrator. Gui-Madilbe is a big fan of marriage (having 13 wives of his own). He married off two of his sisters to local chiefs in Nootka and sent his son, Coxcox, to Tliglit and his daughter to Timishian to get married. Coxcox attempted to convince the recently beaten people to join the union more fully, but they still remember the war of southern aggression. Ugug was elevated to a position of responsibility in the government.

Izawo was sent to the icy waters off the coast of Alaska. He visited the Japanese delegation in Kodiak. After some difficulties with the different languages, Izawo managed to ingratiate himself with the strangers by giving them an expensive copper engraving worth more than 2,000 gold. Izawo returned to Nootka with reports that soon trade between the Japanese Empire and the Twilight Kingdom would soon be a reality.

Bengkh Kingdom of San Fonkiso

Okwang II, Warrior King of Bengkalis, Guardian of the Strait

Diplomacy: Klamath (fa) Yoruk(ne)

Diplomacy continues to be the main emphasis in the Bengkhal kingdom. This time, negotiations with the forest dwelling tribes of Klamath and Yoruk was cut short when the envoys both died of old age. In spite of this diplomatic faux pas, the Klamathi chief is now a loyal vassal of Okwang’s.

Religious reformation is taking longer than expected. Some public works were built and San Fonkiso expanded. 2500 foreign soldiers arrived in friendly Tolowa aboard 14 warships, apparently on a mission of goodwill. They distributed 200,000 gold to the local chieftains and helped build some farm projects. They also gave a 27-year old woman in marriage to one of the administrators; supposedly, she a princess from the country of "Nippon." Since they didn’t seem to be making any trouble, the mighty Bengkhal army refrained from slaughtering them and driving them back to their ships. Things turned ugly, late in ZR 213, when the foreigners revealed their true intentions and attempted to seize the province by force of arms. The invaders were slain by Okwang II and his army of 20,000 horsemen, 19,000 infantry (including 1500 allies from Yoruk) and a few catapults. The enemy leader escaped with his fleet.

Acimaco IV died. Fortunately, his son, Acimaco V, was on hand to take over. The Maori trade monopoly with the Peruvians ended when the Solar Kingdom reestablished trade with Parana. The Maori would make more money from trade if they would send some of their own ships.
