TURN 17
LORDS OF THE EARTH
INDUSTRIAL STAGE ZERO
ANNO DOMINI 936-940
CAMPAIGN Seven
THE MIDDLE AGES

ANNOUNCEMENTS
TURN 18 ORDERS DUE BACK BY: FRIDAY, 16TH OF January , 1998
Greetings to yet another layout for Lords #7. Yeah, I will have to admit that the layout is very much modeled after Thomas Harlan's Lords #1 newsfax, but I do like his lay out a lot. I will be changing it around some more in the next few turns, but it will all depended on where I work, and what computer I will have. Please try to get your turns in, as of 11/24, which is 3 days late, I had a total of 11 turns, not to well.

Okay, all of you Nomadic people, I just found out that the stat program has not been charging you support on Bow men, well I fixed that, so no more free bow men for you.

I wish you and all of yours all the best in these upcoming holidays. May the next year bring you all the happiness and peace that you deserve. Also sometime soon the Norse player, Craig Smith and his wife will have a new child to raise, I just wanted to congratulate them both and wish all three of them well in the upcoming years.
AWARDS!
As made traditional in Sean Harding's Lords Two or Thomas Harlan's Lords One ... I do not have a clue who started it...

Lord: Autumn Thorsen - Auum & Chris Riga - Yamato, both jumped up 4 in the MSI chart

Vagabond: Rob Nicoles - Umayyads, looks like changing religion hurts, eh?

Lucky SOB: Bob Jacobson, The Rus Intelligence Agency stumbled onto something very interesting
RULES ERRATA AND REMINDERS
Tithe Income: If you are paying a tithe to a Religious Primate and the rate of the tithe is less than 5% then there is no effect to you; you do not lose any money. If the rate of the Tithe is greater than 5%, then you lose 1% of Tax Rate for each percentage point of the tithe over 5.
Bidding on Mercs: When you are making a bid for mercenaries, please make separate bids for mercenary units and mercenary leaders.
New Ruling on the Rule action. After a talk with Thomas, I have found that yet again I was wrong. When your King/Queen/Heir Rules, their 4th stat (The all important hidden stat) is added to your Infra level. The 4th stat is between 1 and 10, so you do not get 100%.
Elite troops: They are available to be built/trained when you achieve tech level 5 or greater, this represents how well your troops are versed in combat
Holy Troop:. Holy troops must be used in combat with the target religion., they can not sit around.

"You are not the first to come here in this way, there are Legends of people who called themselves Celt's to come here in much the same way you did, they left this spot together, oh, it would be more then 1000 years now."

"Well, my wife probably thinks me dead, as my King also. I thank you for your information, I must head home."

With that the misplaced Umayyad leader started his long journey home.

Juchi and his band or hairy men have settled down into comfort, the land is rich, the women pleasing and the areas around them are easily bullied. In 937AD the region of Azerbajian was looted, the army then committed genocide on the region, the city was assaulted, sacked and burned to the ground all within a 3 month span. The only disturbing thing was on their first night heading home lieutenant Ogedai was killed, they found him the next morning with his neck slit from ear to ear, and in his blood a message was written, 'Convert heathens, or next time Allah's revenge will be more then a single death'

Norman Empire -

Diplomacy: Vermandois (F), Nivernais (T), Brabant (T)
Henrick and his band of merry men grow tired of all the problems they inherited from the Western Franks. To try to lessen the problems they moved their capitol from Normandy to London, bringing with them many of their loyal underlings. A town in Wessex called Southampton sprung up, as did the city of Cambridge in Anglia. To show the new direction of his nation, Henrick declared themselves the Normal Empire, instead of the Danes

Norse -
Gunnbjorn Hrolfgarson, Lord of Amlodhi's Quern, Keeper of the Eye of Surtur, Dragon of the North
Diplomacy: Skane (F), Denmark (A)
The Norse finally got off their duffs and built two city; in Skane the City of Lund was built, and in the Orkneys a port city named Kirkwall. To go along with these new cities new trade routes were opened and sea zones were explored.

To lessen the burden on his feeble government the region of Fjordane was degraded to Ally status, and his army was let loose to play in the Eastern Prussian regions.

The old religion is still strong, and there has been a kind of fusion of Norse Gods and Christianity which many of the peasants are taking to. This religion appears to be growing by itself, and so far there has been no bloodshed or anything more then condemnation from the few ordained Eastern Orthodox ministers.

"Call for my historian, I need to ask him a question."

"You called sire?"

"Yes, is the city of Kreigsburg gone?"

"Ummm, yes Sire, your father died during the looting and torching of the city some years ago, I can find the whole story if you wish…", Gunnbjorn quickly cut off the rambling bookworm. "No, that is not needed, Wormsworth"

Umayyads -
King Abbas, King of Spain, Finder of strange Caves
Diplomacy: Valencia (NE)
Abbas found that he did not know what to do, the Eastern Orthodox Pope, while doing good for his nation, they were doing it without consulting him. Then the majority of his nation converted, see below.

Abbas opened the waters around his nation to the Vikings from the north, an increase of furs and blond women in his ports seemed to make everyone happy, or at least that is what his trade advisors claimed anyway.

Princess Sereem was sent to investigate Madiera and was later found, alive, but in a coma, she now rests comfortably in the castle.

Lt. Nassir, after seeing the 25,000 Cavalry in Tuscany, decided that he would not try it, and instead sailed the sea's fishing, which he didn't do a good job, all he caught was a case of the crabs.

Murabit -
Nassir Al Murabit, Infidel killer, Allah's Arm
Diplomacy: None
When Nassir came back to Granada he was disgusted to see that the Eastern Orthodox primate had turned Andalusia to their heathen ways, and even more disgusted to find out that in order to try to keep some sort of peace King Abbas converted also. Nassir Al Murabit quickly found that he was not alone in these feelings, within a month he and his supports caused a massive civil war to break out, the regions of Portugal, Estremadura, Talavera, Murcia, and Granada joined under his Flag,, while Abbas had Andalusiia, Galacia, Leon, Salamanic, and Valencia. The regions of Aragon, Navarre, Catalonia, Limousin, and Orleans all revolted and stayed out of the war.

Frankish Kingdom of Germany -
Maxmillian, King of the Last Roman Catholic Kingdom, Heir to the Holy Roman Empire, and all around nice guy
Diplomacy: Meissen (F), Lausatia (EA)
Frederick again shook himself into action, overseeing the building of two cities, one in Alace, on the Rhine, named Defiant, and in Westphalia named Frederick's-Fort. After the celebrations, Frederick enlarged his military in case any of the Vikings decided to try anything like their last attempts to destroy his nation.

In an attempt to win an ally, the region of Dalmatia was released for the Byzantine Empire to take if they wish. Dalmatia was under Frankish rule for 58 years before being granted their freedom.

The peasants in Meissen through out all the priest of the Eastern Orthodox church, and a majority of them converted to the new Norse Christianity as they call it. Frederick would have preferred them to convert to Roman Catholic, but one takes friends where one can when in between a rock and a hard place.

In 937AD the Norse came, but not in the way they did last time, this time they came with loaded boats and wagons full of trade, while Frederick was a little suspicious at first, by the end of that year he was convinced that perhaps the Norse were not as evil and misguided as his father believed.

Frederick died in his sleep in July of 938AD, his only nephew stepped up to be the regent for Frederick's eldest son, and no one could think of a better solution.

Byzantine Empire -
Emperor Cartiphilus, Destroyer of the Catholics
Diplomacy: Serbia (EA), Pamphyla(EA)
Cartiphilus grow tired of sitting on his royal butt in his palace and doing royal paperwork, and doing all the royal things that gave him a royal head ache, so in 936AD he lead a small army into Serbia and did the diplomacy himself. As you can imagine the Serbian's were more then just a little impressed that Emperor Cartiphilus himself came to talk to them about joining his nation, and quickly agreed to merge economically with the powerhouse.

The 5 postal roads connecting various cities were once again expanded, and they are all almost halfway built now. As many other nations have done, the Byzantine Empire saw three new cites built, Sinope in Galatia, Trebizond in Pontis, and Heraclea was rebuilt in Thrace. The original Hercalea was burned to the ground by the Eastern Franks almost 50 years ago

Orthodox Church -
Father Andrew I, Head of the Orthodox church, Defender of Constantinople
Diplomacy: Kiev (AB), Chernigov (AB), Pereaslavl (AB)
Father John grew weary in his old age and sent four young Bishops full of zeal to Spain to try to convert them to following Christ. Little did he know his actions would spark a holy war.

Rus Vikings -
Viga Brand, The River Raider
Diplomacy: None
Viga looked over the war torn nation of his and knew he needed to do something to improve the slumping economy, so like the Norse and the Eastern Franks, he built a city in the region of Latvia, named Vikenberg. In an attempt to boost the food supply he also started cultivating the regions of Novgorod, Latvia and Estonia, and to lessen the strain on his government the region of Kostroma was granted its freedom.

Lieutenant Hafnor was commanded by his King to search around and see if the traitor Olaf acted alone, or if he had help from other people. Hafnor found far more then anyone expected, but soon after he sent his second report to his king, an angry mob formed around him and accused him be being in league with Satan, and he was burned at the stake, after he was disemboweled and drowned in holy water.

In his last report he claimed he had found proof of a war between two cults going on at this very moment, and while neither have armies, they have managed to manipulate the normal countries into doing their dirty deeds for them, but while one of the cults is Christian based, the other is Muslim based.

After hearing the news, Viga tiredly sank into his thrown and bleakly starred off into the night sky.
Kyraghz Khanate n
Chief Arslan, Big chief
Diplomacy: Ghuzz (NT), Uze (NT), Kazan (NT), Ob (NT), Tabolska (NT), Tarhain (NT), Betpak (NT)
King Sid II, now with the Rome firmly under his control moved his military around to protect himself from anyone who might have gotten any idea to attack his nation. Sid III lead a small army of siege troops from city to city to see what could be done to strengthen the walls, and he left a few troops in each city so they could start enhancing all aspects of defense.

While taking stock of what the Ligurians had conquered in Rome, King Sid II found a small shrine, and within this shrine were the remains of Saint Peter, or so the writing on the walls claimed. So overcome with religious fervor, King Sid II built a great Basilica in the name of Saint Peter around his shrine

Oghuzvid Empire -
Dassan, Thunder maker, Big man on the Nile
Diplomacy: None
Dassan continued silently building up his nation, the cities of Erivan, Ermenic, and Ezurum all expanded to level 5 cities. Dassan also continued showering the Sunni Primate with gifts and asking for advice on small issues, probably just to get on his good side, or so the rumors go.

Axum -
Phil, Truth Seeker, Second biggest man on the Nile
Diplomacy: Kavalava (F), Rowsi (T), Maldives (EA)
Emperor Phil was very untrusting of the sudden peace that befell his empire last turn, caution was still called for, yet luck favors the bold, as his father once told him. The first order of business was to pay back the Oghuzvid's for the loan they gave him 10 years ago. While he was devising a new goal for his nation, now that Aden had fallen. He noticed something for the first time, he noticed the looks his Ally from Kavalava and his Daughter Kizmat were giving each other. Silently he laughed at himself, for while he was busy worrying about gold and government policy, his little girl and ally were struck by Eros.

Phil took them both, and sailed to his country and he oversaw their wedding, the exiles from India were so impressed with Kizmat and Phil that they pledged themselves to Axum.

While he was relaxing his nation sent men under the Tesse fly line looking for materials for trades and found a large supply.

Mustafas declared "Our mutual friendship, Ghana, has made our combined armies the strongest military force in the world. But, we will only use it to defend our homeland."

After the celebration Mustafas was found dead one morning at the ripe old age of 55, the newly crowned heir Mandela stepped up and took over the nation

Diplomacy: None
Celeste finally got around to housing the Zapotec refugees that migrated down to Auum from their failed nation. Many were farmers and were offered land if they promised to give the extra food back to Auum for the next 20 years.

Leaders were dying left and right, Hot-Damn just vanished without a trace, Lolitia was last seen when a slimy tentacle reached out from a cave she was walking by and yanked her in, the guards who were with her, heard her shrieks, and within thirty seconds they were in there looking for her, they never found her body. Daymeon was researching some undisclosed topics when he went insane, screaming "The time is near, they are awakened! They are coming into our world! All is lost!", he is currently changed to a wall in the prison. Sue was exploring Atuari, the locals thought she was a witch and burned her at the stake.

All in all not many people want to become a leader in this nation now.
